Jameis Winston: “This Game, It’s 99.9 Percent Mental””
June 23rd, 2019America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, has been a bit of a mental failure during his NFL career.
And based on new words from Jameis himself, he’d say the exact same thing.
Bucs fans don’t need the background. Jameis has been a wildly inconsistent quarterback, highs and lows. Throw in getting the NFL’s version of a sex offender slapped on him, and it’s easy to say Jameis can’t get a good grade when it comes to mentality in the world of franchise quarterbacks.
Jameis gave a week of his time to his hometown Alabama communities last week with a heavy focus on helping kids.
He also gave an interview to the good folks at The Birmingham News. Jameis told them one thing he taught at a high school football camp led by him and his foundation on Thursday.
“We also had a mental performance coach (speak). This game, it’s 99.9 percent mental, so we had a guy come in and teach them breathing exercises, to teach them the ‘next-play mentality,’ because a lot of us get in trouble, I’ve gotten in trouble that way. Something bad may happen, and I harp on that play too long instead of moving on to the next play.
“So those were the most important parts of that session. We started off with doing things the right way, life skills and mental performance. Now football, that comes easy. We were blessed to play that game. We were privileged to play that game.
“And the main message I had for them was not to cheat yourself. You only have one life. I don’t want you to cheat yourself. If you cheat yourself, who else is going to be there for you?”
Powerful stuff from Jameis, and it fascinates Joe to hear Jameis call football 99.9 percent mental and talk about his shortcomings.
Yes, it’s the mental side that has made Jameis an average NFL starter after four seasons. If he’s still average six months from now, Team Glazer and friends will have a big decision to make on a guy with a very big body of work.

Brett Favre had “mental” issues as well.
Winston was drafted as a gunslinger – not to be a Mike Glennon clone who throws the ball out of bounds to end a game rather than risk an INT. If you still want Mike Glennon as your QB, he’s pretty cheap to sign right now.
June 23rd, 2019 at 3:02 pm
90 percent of the game is half mental.
June 23rd, 2019 at 3:02 pm
Good you recognize the game is 99% mental Jameis. So how do we get you out of the 65% category?
June 23rd, 2019 at 3:09 pm
breathing excercises ?….
June 23rd, 2019 at 3:20 pm
60% of the time, it works every time
June 23rd, 2019 at 3:26 pm
Jameis is trolling the Winston Bashers! Lol
June 23rd, 2019 at 3:28 pm
This reminds me of Joe Maddon’s ol’ saying to: “ Try Easier”
June 23rd, 2019 at 3:53 pm
Powerful stuff from Winston? No, i’s BS. Fool me once…shame on you…
Winston’s best hope to stay in the NFL is to get on the field, fix his pick problem, and off the field stay out the limelight until he builds up a long time with a record as a respectable person. A week in Alabama isn’t going to fool anyone. Anyone who believes this stuff he says now is acting a fool.
Nope…turn the page.
June 23rd, 2019 at 4:00 pm
Thats a problem since Jameis is a headcase!
June 23rd, 2019 at 4:03 pm
C’mon, while I agree he’s not our Franchise QB… yet? His off the field transgressions were in his rookie year. So I’ve got faith he stays outta trouble OFF the field. ON the field, sweet damn Winston! get it together.
Go BUCS

I think jameis squeezes every ounce out of his ability
Which puts him at 22nd
Not a bust
Not elite
June 23rd, 2019 at 4:48 pm
Ever notice Jameis’s best season is the off season?
June 23rd, 2019 at 5:27 pm
@WhatdaBUCisthis, his worst off-field issue was after his rookie season, during the very first offseason of his NFL career when he was not under team supervision. First time no one was looking, bang. Then two years ago he denied, lied, and deceived, well into last year. Nope. Not done. I do agree with you on: Not our franchise QB…not anyone’s. So will he get through ONE season without something in the news for the wrong reasons? Doubt it. Turn the page.
June 23rd, 2019 at 5:35 pm
Ever notice that Jameis’s best season is the off season?
June 23rd, 2019 at 5:40 pm
Bucs win the 4 games we had leads in, in the final minutes of the fourth quarter (only to lose with the offense never seeing the ball again). How bad is he then, after several 9 win seasons? For you “keeping it real, no excuses, holier than thou, player X,Y or Z is the reason we don’t win consistently, I deserve a winner cause I bought a ticket, never played but think I’m good at Madden, got a right to say whatever I want regardless of if it’s true or not, and cast shade on & against the team I proclaim to be a fan of” fans: It is a team game. THAT IS NOT AN EXCUSE, ITS A FACT. If you don’t get that, you have no clue of the game of which you spout. Go Bucs!
June 23rd, 2019 at 5:56 pm
Man, if the game is truly “99.9 percent mental,” we are in deep doo doo with Jay Miss.
June 23rd, 2019 at 6:11 pm
And the excuses start in

And go…
June 23rd, 2019 at 6:13 pm
Your #1 overall pick shouldn’t be an average starter after 50 plus starts
Time for Jameis to be consistent and give the team a chance to win every week like other good qbs
June 23rd, 2019 at 6:30 pm
…and yes Jameis, if the game was 99% mental, my plaque would be in Cooperstown.
June 23rd, 2019 at 6:32 pm
I put my money on Geno to be first to the comments. And any fool knows the game is 99.9 percent mental.
The other half is physical.

If Tampa Bay had better fans, we’d win more games.
Yeah- I’m talking about you.

Show us the Buccaneers fan faithful, don’t tell us again, what you are going to do. SHOW US!
Wins matter!
Go Bucs!
Thanks Joe for the breakdown of the schedule Jamise had. Good messages for young minds.

Well rather Jamies plays well are not yall are going to get your wish . Then when the bucs pick another quarterback in the first round and pass up on defense again and we still lose 10 or 11 games a year yall will be running him out of town as well blaming everything on that quarterback. No one has ever said Jamies is perfect. But I’ve seen to many games where we couldn’t stop anybody. I’ve seen games where we couldn’t close games out because we have no running game. A quarterback needs all of those things to win . That’s why football is a team game not a quarterback game. The Patriots know how to stop teams from scoring when they really need to. Look at the super bowl. How come we can’t play defense like that are run the ball like that. Sonny Mitchell carried the Patriots threw the playoffs and at the end of the season. I don’t care if they give Brady all the credit. I have never let the national media brainwash me like the rest of yall fantasy football people. I call it like I see it. A team should not have to score 35 or 40 points a game . A team suppose to be able to win with 20 points a game if they are playing good or at least decent defense Just like the rest of the wining team do . They don’t give up 30 or 28 points a game.
June 23rd, 2019 at 7:04 pm
When was the last time we had a 1,000 yards rusher???
2015–Joe
June 23rd, 2019 at 7:12 pm
@reach87: 99.9% of your posts are mental errors. The End of game issues with the D is due to JW’s turnovers all game long that leaves the defense on the field. They are worn out dummy. JameisNOT
June 23rd, 2019 at 8:14 pm
Well, duh! He’s got the physical ability, it’s never been about that.
5th year, it’s do or die….PERIOD! It’s in our best interest for him to succeed. If he cannot then he should be gone just like any other player.
Football is not played in a vacuum. And, for however many excuses you make for him about defense and special teams and a rushing attack, it doesn’t change the FACT that you can’t turn the ball over as frequently as he does. TEAM game means just that, not JUST defense, or run, or special teams. The turnovers MATTER!
June 23rd, 2019 at 8:50 pm
The reflection part may be true. But every year is a new year.
If we’re 5-11 again you can say I told you so. But we’re 0-0 right now. Don’t forget that.
June 23rd, 2019 at 8:53 pm
I agree with Jameis. And it affects you game to game. If your head is not totally in it you’re surely to make mistakes. Let’s say mentally he’s had a quite to deal with since he started his NFL journey. But like the old saying goes What tears you down only makes you stronger. Let’s hope he’s 99.9 % ready every game this time. This season rides on Jameis playing precision smart football and protecting his young defense and keeping them off the field. Especially short fields.

@Joe:
Thank you so much for posting the picture from my all-time favorite play from America’s QB, ProBowler, most NFL-ready QB, highest football IQ, #1 overall NFL draft pick, Jameis Winston!
The only thing missing from that picture is the football which he was carrying in his outstretched left hand before it was stripped. Luckily, the underrated Mike Evans recovered it in the end zone.

@tickrdr
If it weren’t for Evans, Hump and Brate and their disregard for getting killed after the catch due to errant/behind throws……JW would be seen as a bust by now.
My fingers are crossed but I’m not convinced JW will pull his head out his ass this year.
It’s ok though., even if he stinks it up again…..we’ll probably give him another chance!
June 23rd, 2019 at 10:11 pm
Oneilbucs, don’t waste your time on these articles. You notice it’s all the mouth breathers that comment. It’s just a big circle jerk for these rubes. Magawhatever takes first shot as the pivot man. Steer clear. Just amuse yourself reading the drivel.
June 23rd, 2019 at 10:52 pm
Everybody, please try to find more than a couple of possessions the Bucs were up? Review his third down completion percentage and the amount of 3rd down
Conversions were because of him. He had to consistently be on fire just to be two scores down. With no D or running game, in addition to ask your QB to throw it 45 times again. Tom can’t snd was had to fun it out. The only exception is Aaron, and what does the rest of the nation think of him? Besides he can’t chug a beer
June 23rd, 2019 at 10:58 pm
Jameis is a weird story. Wins don’t show is talent, desire to win and most important the reason the Bucs still keeping losing
June 23rd, 2019 at 11:02 pm
Watching the Bucs play the last few years has made me go mental, as in insane!
June 24th, 2019 at 8:35 am
Why hasn’t one of the many Jameis’ sycophants posted why a 4th year veteran in his FIRST game back after being benched for his play, would make such a MENTAL mistake as the picture shows???

I am so surprised he didn’t end up at Stanford. Dude is a genius.
June 24th, 2019 at 11:04 am
@T REX:
I heard that if you were on the crew team, that you could get preferential treatment for admission, even if your academic credentials were less than stellar, but they would probably not do that if you were just a QB.
