A former NFL general manager is of the mind the Stinking Panthers made a big mistake.
Of course, we all know last week Carolina signed former Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. This sparked jubilation among the loud crowd of Bucs fans who have hollered for a decade to get rid of GMC. They finally got their wish.
Well, it’s hard to categorize Michael Lombardi as a GMC hater. But he believes GMC is all but toast as an NFL player. And all he needed to come to this conclusion was to hear were words from Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians.
The former NFL executive and coffee-fetcher for Bill Walsh, Al Davis and Bill Belicheat, who also ran the Cleveland Browns, thinks Carolina may just wave goodbye to GMC after the 2019 season.
“I don’t think he has much gas left,” said Lombardi in his latest edition of his podcast “GM Shuffle,” published just before GMC signed with Carolina. “I think whoever signs this guy will be looking for a tackle.
“He could be a progress stopper. He hasn’t been in camp. If you are not in camp, your legs have no juice. Our man the boxer the other day [Anthony Joshua], he lost his legs, he couldn’t really function, right? Once you lose your legs you can’t get it back and at his age?
“I think people see the name and don’t realize he didn’t play well.”
Lombardi added Arians is too good of a coach to just toss aside good defensive players (unlike someone Bucs fans know too well). That was Lombardi’s tipoff that GMC is done.
“Bruce Arians said he doesn’t fit. What does that tell you?” Lombardi said. “Seriously, how does he not fit? Right? All good defensive players can fit somewhere. He rushes the passer. He doesn’t fit? That’s one of the great lines of all time.”
Of course, time will tell if GMC is out of gas or not. Lombardi hinted that behind the scenes teams were not that active in bidding for GMC and that GMC’s agent was doing a superb job of dropping hints with the right people in the Fourth Estate to spread word that teams were fighting for his services.
Lombardi wasn’t buying it.

Some sense being doled out by the media here…and Lombardi is well connected. He called the Josh Freeman demise before most and typically knows what he’s talking about. McCoy…and his new vegan ways…will be less strong than usual. He wasn’t strong to begin with only doing 12 reps of 225 at the combine. I’m glad Bucs got rid of him a year too early ( or not even a minute too soon ) than a year too late.

glad we got rid of him and michael is right….he’ll play 1 year for CAR and they’ll let him walk…..CAR will see he’s not a true leader….
i wouldnt be surprised if k.short, mario addison and luke call his ass out during TC for not having that “edge” to him….
CAR will take a step back this year which could lead to riverboat ron and cam’s head rolling….thomas davis gone, peppers gone….and they replaced that leadership and production with GMC….lol…..

I think he’ll do better there than he would have done here. In Carolina he just has to worry about his game (not “leading”) and he is part of a strong d line rotation. It won’t be good enough to make Bucs fans regret the swap.

Just about says all you need to know about McCoy. BA spotted the loafer early. And any Bucs fan that has watched any significant tape of McCoy knows he loafs. A lot.
Good riddance. I’m glad he’s someone else’s problem now.

I think part of the reason he went to CAR is cause they got a good defense. He will not have to be a superstar to come off looking good over there. It probably don’t hurt that he knows the Bucs have always always struggled with that defense and have been outright manhandled by them for most of McCoys career.
Only shocked he didn’t choose the Browns cause they are getting mega hype and have several primtime games this year. We all know how Gerald loves the camera.
But I’m glad he went to Carolina. He will wanna proove something when we play but so will Kong Suh. Given the history of what Gerald and Suh have done in big moments in their career my money is on Suh to outperform Gerald in both them games. So thank you Gerald for proving our new DT with some extra motivation twice this year.

I think he went to Carolina because he’s familiar with every team in the division. Bucs fans know he’s not as good as advertised and lets be honest he knows it too. So why go to a division where you’re facing someone new every week when you can stay in the division you’ve played your entire career in and maybe hide the fact that you’re not as advertised. Can’t wait to get this season going.

GMC has been whining about his knees hurting since training camp 2017. He likely only has a couple years left in the NFL. And was set to make $13M having posted 6 sacks and 28 Tackles last year….
6 sacks is fine for a DT if he’s being disruptive and eating up blockers – but 28 tackles in 14 games????
Vea had 28 tackles (and 3 sacks) as a rookie playing half a season… Suh had 59 tackles last year… Donald – 59 tackles and 20 sacks…. 30 year old Atkins – 45 tackles and 10 sacks…
I wish Gerald well – but the truth is we should have traded him for something of value last year while he still had some trade value.

All we know is Lovie hired Licht and Lovie had all the power initially.
We have no freaking idea what the organizational power structure was when Koetter became head coach.
We’re now back to knowing for a fact pretty much Bruce Arians and his staff are running the draft / FA/ etc.
SO where is all this power that Licht supposedly had when he ran the team into the ground trying to build it around Gerald McCoy (lol at that idea in general)?
For being such a conspiracy theorist you really seem to miss the picture of what has been going on here..
You saying they gave Licht all the power for 2016-2018 and gave him absolutely no power in 2014-2015 and 2019?
How in the hell does that make sense?

I’d say the owners – for not properly constructing a legit front office with legit autonomy to build a team.

A 3-tech known for his first step (speed) well that is the first to go as you age is SPEED. A DT known for his power and not his quickness will still be effective as he ages. So again I say go with the Patriot’s model of letting or trading players a year too early than keeping them past their prime and get nothing in return.

I watched some McCoy new panther interviews. And he was asked what type of player they are getting. He said the defensive version of Cam Newton. A guy who likes to joke and have fun. And he looks forward getting to know his teammates inside jokes and just bringing a lot of fun to this team. I love football and just having fun. This guy just doesn’t get it. No one wants a defensive tackle gladiator to just say he is about fun. We all knew sapp was having fun as he was sacking the league mvp Favre and sticking his tongue out talking junk back and forth. That’s what fun is to a defensive tackle. Not dressing up with your future boyfriend cam. It’s a game but there’s a lot more to it than just having fun. That’s what I tell my 8 youth basketball team to do when there getting there butts kicked. Just go out there and have fun. No athlete that I have seen can be great from a have fun attitude. Name one fun guy who is great. They have fun playing. When the game starts that warrior mentality has to come out. You can’t still be the class clown on the field. It’s a shame he has gotten by on his natural abilities. If he was a dominate dude mentality he could have been a hall of famer. Like Ian loves to say he just doesn’t have any dog in him

Actually, very incorrect here. Going solely by memory here, but McCoy had 21 reps of 225 at 295 lbs. Being a vegan WILL hurt his strength and energy levels and he will stay hurt as well. For comparison sales, I eat meat like it’s my job and at 45 years old and only 188 lbs I hit 225 for 25 reps last Thursday… not a PB but good considering I suffered a debilitating shoulder injury in November.
