Is Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians up for a challenge?
Field Yates of BSPN isn’t sure. And what would that challenge be? Making America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, a more consistent quarterback.
Last week on “NFL Live,” seen on BSPN, a segment was dedicated to Arians and how can he fix the Bucs. For Yates, fixing the Bucs means getting Jameis back on track as one of the NFL’s better quarterbacks. Yates didn’t seem overly confident Arians can solve that puzzle.
If Arians can’t work his magic on Jameis, Yates foresees the Bucs with another high draft pick next spring.
“I think it is going to be a challenge,” Yates said. “I think [the Bucs] want to replicate the model they had in Arizona, which was to resurrect Carson Palmer’s career.
“For Jameis Winston, he has the ability, he has the natural ability. Obviously, he was the first overall pick for a reason some years ago. There have been moments of brilliance sandwiched by moments of mistakes and far too many decision errors and some accuracy errors we well.
“You have got to find a way to channel the best of Jameis Winston each Sunday because inconsistent Jameis gets you back to 6-10 and probably picking among the top-ten picks in 2020.”
So many people believe, and not without merit, that the best way to help Jameis become more consistent would be to develop a running game. Joe agrees. Here, however, is the problem: You can talk until you are blue in the face about running the ball but if you don’t have the horses to do so, you may as well urinate in the wind.
Do you see a running back on the Bucs roster that can put the offense on his back and carry the team? Joe sure doesn’t.

Agreed. But it’s not just running game or better O line that Winston needs. You can give him more weapons, more this and that, but the problem is his head. It’s what has been a problem for him on and off the field since at least college: His poor decisoin making. He’s talks a good game back to what those with authority tell him. But he too often just does what he wants…on and off the field. Winston needs to do what he is told (by his coaches, by common standards of decency, etc), not just what he wants to do. He is a BS artist. He is not a leader.
So his decisionmaking is his biggest fault. He lacks true self-discipline in that regard. Until he remedies that, he will not change. Folks like to bring up his last six games were very good…but were they just another peak to be followed by a valley? There is no excuse for guy with what was entrusted to him to have so many problems with basic decisoinmaking at his age and at his four years of experience (people Winston’s age lead fighter formations into combat–he’s being asked to play a kids game).
I’ve seen enough. Time to move on.

Agreed Joe. It would make fans feel a lot better if they had put more effort in addressing the run-game. We’ll have to trust that they knew what they were doing.

Despite what the Pollyanna’s say Winston has not been good enough, consistent enough, nor clever enough since his freshman season at FSU. Certainly not worthy on the #1 overall pick and maybe not even a first round pick at this point.
Meaningless stats, big numbers, few wins and few example of him rising above what he is and has been since some night at Pitt so long ago.
That said it’s either BA or Bust for Jameis “meaningless stats” Winston. Will it be another wasted year? Then another?

Well put Magadude. Leaders are developed prior to their teenage years. Which is developed by good parenting and a strong support system. He obviously had neither. It does not help that he is ignorant and arrogant. He would have been flushed a long time ago if he were playing in a larger city with a much more aggressive media. Better yet if he would have played college ball at WSU instead of FSU….fan base game.

Joe has addressed this several times but slow starts are mostly to blame for the running game. You can’t have a balanced attack down by 14 in the first quarter. Through several coaching regimes this team sleep walks through the first half of the game. Of course this also goes back to being mentally weak and unprepared for your opponent. Both SIDES the O and the D are to blame! The offense gets the ball first and its three and out the defense gets on the field they can’t stop ANYONE.

The Bucs will open 6-0 for several reasons:
1) The Todd Bowles effect — the Bucs will be viewed like all of you view them…as a sh!tty team. Underestimated, Bowles unleashed blitz schemes will overwhelm even the good teams who are also working out their kinks.
2) Do you really think all the injured SF players are going to come in hitting on all cylinders? He’ll no. Garoppolo and Newton, in particular, will be playing tentative. Bowles will own that fact.
3) Our offense doesn’t suck. Not a single person in here knows squat about BA’s scheme and how they will exploit mismatches.
4) Matt Gay is a unit. We have a special teams coach now. Focus, focus, focus. We’ll finally be we’ll-rounded.
5) Young, exuberant confidence. Momentum breeds momentum. We’ll open 1-0, then 2-0, … 6-0.
Y’all heard it here first.
Until we lose a single game, I’m right. I own it.

We get there by really good team/QB play. We go as far as Jameis takes us. If Devin White is a “savior”- as a rookie #5 overall pick, than what is Jameis- 5th year/former #1 overall pick?
Jameis also plays QB. I’m excited for him this year. I hope he can improve the TD:Turnover Ration. If he does, watch out for the Bucs.

Does the Simeon Rice Curse (12+ years of no player w 10+ sacks) come back because JPP got hurt off the field and may never play another down for us? So sad For JPP and the fans. May he make a speedy recovery and come back to form. I just don’t know how you pay all that money for a half season and a giant question mark?

@Pittshore…agreed. I think he is a good backup QB, and that’s about it. Too many make excuses for him. He is looking over his shoulder at Fitz. He has bad coaches. He has no run game. He has no O line. And Winston’s best is he is glad he now had an OC he can relate to. He’d get eaten alive by the media anywhere else, true, and what many Winston lovers here don’t admit to is he doesn’t move the needle with a very sizable portion of the fan base anymore. We don’t have to mention few to no one wants him endorsing their projects. To be fair, Big Ben should have been banned from football years ago. But the metropolitan size of the area and Steeler nation saved him…along with his play.

Dotson has said that previous OLine coach was good coach
Marpet has said that preparation was good but he didn’t know why OLine struggles in run game
OLinemen have been re-signed to big contracts, indicating talent is there.
All this points to bad scheme, bad play calling.
Previous Coaching staff has been cleaned out.
Arians has successful track record
Expect big improvement.

This team torpedoed Jameis development. When Jameis has a running game with DM#22 and Chuck Sims, you could see his potential (V-Jax and ME). Bucs have not had a running game since that time and they been going backwards ever since. If BA can get the most out of the RBs and Oline, you will se Jameis success. Let me make sure that I understand the argument here Joe. Jameis probably has the best overall group of WRs & TEs in the league. His OLine is ‘decent’ at pass blocking. He has a renowned “QB Whisperer’ HC with some very experienced assistants to guide him. He now has FOUR years of starting experience under his belt (54 games) to build on. He’s got all the attributes & makings of a star NFL QB.
But wait, there’s more. Jameis didn’t have a credible running game, so Poor Jameis was forced to pass too often, which led to accumulating LOTS of passing yards … and oh ya, turnovers. And Jameis didn’t have a strong defense, so Poor Jameis was often playing from behind, forcing him to pass more often, which led to … yada, yada. Poor Jameis.
So if I understand right Joe, all it’ll take for Jameis to become ‘America’s QB’ is for this top receiving group to continue receiving, for our OLine to continue to pass block well, for the Bucs’ running game to come alive so that Jameis doesn’t have to pass as often, and oh ya for our defense to keep the other teams from scoring. Got it.
Sounds to me like what all these ‘experts’ are calling for is for the Bucs to become the Patriots South. What I just described is pretty much what Tom Brady has had going for him for quite awhile now. Well, maybe except for the top receiving group in the NFL.

We’re not going to have a good running game. Year after year, coach after coach, we hear the same thing…but when push comes to shove, they’d rather throw the ball.
Arians is a vertical passing kind of guy, not a running the ball guy.
That probably means more picks, since there will be more opportunities for picks.

Actually, improve the kicking game and the defense, and things will turn out fine.
The issue, as I saw it, was that Jameis took big risks when playing from behind, which was mostly caused by poor defense. He played well enough to overcome his own mistakes in most of the games (such as picks).
If the defense can get the ball back more often, the opponents will score less and Jameis can mellow out and take his time, letting us run more.
And if our kicker can actually make field goals, that would be pretty huge as well.
To me, Jameis makes a few mistakes here and there, but he plays well enough to win (outside of 1-2 games last year). It is, however, a team sport, and Jameis does not kick the ball or play on defense.

I was watching one of these stupid ESPN talking shows last year with Mike Greenberg, Jalen Rose, Dan Orlovsky and Rex Ryan. Greenberg’s question to ‘the panel’ was will Jameis Winston be the starting QB at the beginning of 2019? This was when Jameis was benched. Only the real football guy Rex Ryan was correct in stating Winston will be starting in 2019. The other 3 of course were wrong. You can see most of these talking heads just following the crowd. They do lazy analysis and really all they have are talking points like politicians use. You can bank on most will be wrong commenting on anything Bucs like quite a few on this sight who said Winston wouldn’t be here in 2019.

2017
• Missed Field Goals cost us at least 2 games before Folk was benched.
• Defense let opponents take the lead often, but in 4 games, Winston led the team back to take the lead, only to have the defense blow that lead in the final seconds.
• Jameis injured his throwing should in the 2nd or 3rd game and it bothered him all year.
• Bucs went 5-11. Add the two games kicking cost us, and the 4 games defense cost us, and the Bucs would have been 11-5.
2018
• Jameis suspended first 3 games. Fitz won two of them.
• Jameis spent the entire off season preparing to come back in game four (Bears?), but Koetter made him wait anyway. Fitz lost two in a row.
• Speaking of the suspension…nothing was ever proven aside from Winston being drunk and riding in the Uber car…which is normally a good thing (better than driving drunk). Yet Jameis was crucified by media and fans alike. If he was not guilty, that most have destroyed his confidence, and it showed all year.
• Jameis ends up getting benched for Fitz by a coach who was thinking more of saving his job than doing the right thing.
• Realizing Fitz is the same old Fitz, Jameis is put back in.
• From that point on, Jameis played well.
• Kicking directly cost the Bucs three games.
• Although the fluctuating offense had issues, the defense was one of the worst in the league, and they blew plenty of games (more than I can count right now).
• Desean Jackson was working behind the scenes to undermines all things Jameis.
• Bucs went 5-11 in a season that was filled with instability…and not all of it was the fault of Jameis (although he had his share of fault).
So, here is what I think, for what it is worth:
Jameis has the ability to take us all the way, but just like every other QB who makes it to the Superbowl, he needs reliable kicking and a good defense to do it. The Pats do it with both. The Jags did it with both. Heck, even Peyton Manning failed to win a superbowl until his defense was fixed in Denver!

You’re right Bonzai, football is a TEAM SPORT. Thus holding Jameis singularly responsible for every loss is just as ridiculous as giving him singular credit for every win. Raheem had it right however … “We’ll tolerate you until we can replace you”. And if a player is the highest paid member of a TEAM, his individual PERFORMANCE better warrant that pay or ownership/management will be looking for a replacement.
Jameis wasn’t paid that much (comparatively) in his first 4 years. But now he’s on the cusp of BIG paydays, and his performance better warrant a BIG-TIME investment by ownership/management. IOW, he NEEDS to play better than he has been playing IF he expects a big-time contract. Folks can use lack of a running game, poor S/Ts play & shoddy defense as excuses for not winning all they want, BUT … Glazers won’t invest big-time in Jameis unless his PERFORMANCE shows that he’s worthy.
Jameis’ performance on the field has been reasonably good these first 4 years … for a Bucs’ QB (our TEAM isn’t exactly the strongest in the NFL). But he’s had some glaring issues … decision-making faux pas (at times), inconsistency (at times), trying to do too much (at times) … all that leading to too many turnovers IMO. Those a fixable. His LEADERSHIP (yes, QBs are supposed to be LEADERS) has taken some hits (largely because of his off-field antics in the past IMO) and that’s going to be the hardest to gain back far as I’m concerned. And before the Glazers throw tons of cash his way, Jameis will need to satisfactorily demonstrate to them that he’s now THE LEADER of this TEAM (or at a minimum leader of this offense).
Personally I’ll put my money on Jameis, that his PERFORMANCE on the field will improve, and that he can regain his LEADERSHIP position. Partially because of Jameis, but even more-so because of BA & company. They’re just what the doctor ordered IMO.

However, I stand by what I said..inconsistent equals what they said….6-10 (or MUCH worse if you ask the oft-referred to on JBF Ian Beckles). Consistent equals 8-8 (maybe). And despite what you say about his teammates and vertical passing, of COURSE his teammates will say he’s great at it….lol. But I’ll defer to experts that can say what they know, not teammates that necessarily have to endorse him.

Stop saying it is the run game. Eagles had the 28th ranked run game and they made the playoffs. Steelers had the 30th ranked and they just barely missed the playoffs. Stop saying it is the run game, yes it helps, but it doesn’t prevent us from getting into the playoffs.
We had the #1 passing offense and we still didn’t get in, because we lost close games. If the defense gets better we will more games. Of course, our kicker lost a few games as well. Hell, 3 more wins and we would have been 8-8, good enough for 2nd in the South.

ATL by 5
CIN by 3
NYG by 3
ATL by 2
Those are all game we should have won, but lost in the last few mins. That’s 5 more wins. We’d be 10-6, but still 2nd in the South. Eagles made playoffs with 9-7 record and Seahawks got in with 10-6. We would have been a wildcard.
That isn’t all because of a run game. We failed because of Special teams and defense. This is why Joe keeps saying, he isn’t as concerned about the OLine as some, but more about Dline.

Jameis went 9-7 with crap at WR but a decent Oline and a strong running game (the Defense also started to play decent halfway throughout the season). You can’t build a team with skill positions, you have to invest in the trenches.

Like many long time Bucs fans I’ve watched us lose games and have awful season records because of bad quarterbacks and bad Qb play. That is not what has happened here lately. We Finally have the QB. Now we just need to surround him with consistent components around him.
Let’s start with a run game, we knew from when Jameis first got here that-that got us 9 wins. Add in a decent defense and kicking game and the sky’s the limit. It Doesn’t surprise me in the least that the national media has it wrong but what does is that so many local fans seem to agree..

I love how we point out that any Qb would be inconsistent and have a bad win/loss record if their team didn’t have a run game and had a awful defense. You don’t have to look far. Back to see examples of both. Aaron Rogers 2018. Jameis Winston 2015 9-7 record.
NO ONE is saying that we need a great defense, kicking and running game just that it can’t totally suck like it has recently.

Our running backs are the absolute worst group in the league unless Ronald Jones becomes who we thought he was when drafted. In the immortal words of longtime Tampa Bay radio man Tedd Webb, “you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken s! @t”.
With the sixth pick in the 2020 NFL draft , the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Tua Tagovailoa seems like something we are likely to hear next year based on the current roster, but I will keep the faith until November at least…

Bucs scoring defense rankings by season:
2015 – 26th, 26.1 PPG – losing season
2016 – 15th, 23.1 PPG – winning season
2017 – 24th, 23.9 PPG – losing season
2018 – 31st, 29 PPG – losing season
Meanwhile – Offense in PPG in this time frame:
2015 – 20th, 21.4 PPG, losing seaosn
2016 – 18th, 22.1 PPG, winning season (BALANCE)
2017 – 18th, 20.9 PPG, losing season
2018 – 12th, 24.8 PPG, losing season
If you look at yardage rankings, the Bucs are basically top 5 every year.
If you look at every year Dirk has been in the NFL, there is like 1 season in 10 where his scoring actually matched the yardage. Typically he has top 10 yardage offenses that are just top 16-20 in points. This is a huge sample size at this point to show this.
2019 playoff formula for Bucs = better red zone execution + just average defense

But riddle me this: What QBs have posted winning seasons when they have both a bottom 3 defense AND a bottom 3 rushing attack?
Besides maybe 1 season for Aaron Rodgera (who will go down as one of the most gifted QBs to ever play the game), I can’t think of any others…

I guess the NFL has turned into the National QB league the way some of you talk. Winston is not the problem with this TEAM. Look the word (team) up. Count the players and coaches on the field during all the phases. Its more than the QB. Now count up how many games we lost after having a lead in the final minutes of the 4th quarter (never to see the ball again, or to see it with seconds left and the only option being a hail mary). Count up how many penalties led to field goals (then add on the field goals that were missed). Then, after doing that, start your argument again. You want to be real, that’s real. That’s not excuses, that’s fact. Some of the worst, most biased fans ever. No clue about the game or team they claim to be fans of. Real is when your team has a lead, needs to hold, and doesn’t. Work that into your “unbiased” equation. Yes we need better QB play. Yes we need better OLine Play; Yes we need better special teams; yes we need more turnovers from the defense; yes we need better schemes in the defensive backfield; yes we need more pressure on the QB. BL: In this Team game, we need the team to perform better in every phase. That’s how you win consistently. Lets hope our players across the board are improved enough and that our coaches prep them better and make better adjustments through the week and game. Lets not single out a QB who, while not perfect…is not the problem. Alternative: pick out the one guy you don’t like and cry about him endlessly. Go Bucs!.

Jameis has good talent and could have so much more.
On Sundays: Defenses win games. Period. Obviously responsible for opponents from scoring points, but when a opposing team pushes the team down field and scores in 5 minutes, you give the QB and the rest of the offense no time to rest and go over plays and schemes with coaches.
Bring us back a beautiful Tampa Bay defense Todd. GO BUCS!!!

I love how so many of them talk so highly of TODD BOWLES. As if he’s some Defensive Mastermind. If Bowles was so great other teams would have paid him big money to stay. He came to the Bucs because he was easily available.

ENOUGH CRYING about the running game as an excuse for Jameis Winston.
In 2015, Doug Martin rushed for over *1,400 YARDS* and Jameis put up a mighty SIX wins on the entire season.

@LordC – the Defense has nothing to do with how a QB leads the team to consistent scoring (or in this case lack thereof) on the first few drives of a game. The Defense also has ZERO to do with our production in the RED ZONE.
Oh right, though… Winston’s lack of success in the Red Zone is due to our O-Line… or Running Game… or insert-whatever-excuse.
Our Defense has nothing to do with Winston GIVING THE BALL AWAY to other teams, often deep in our own territory and giving opponents a short field.
And one can play the “BECAUSE” game in both directions…
Our Defense suffered due to EXHAUSTION in many games because Winston couldn’t sustain drives and let the D rest.
Stop making excuses for Winston. He’s NOT a great NFL QB and nothing has shown that he will be.

Comparing his 2015 ROOKIE YEAR and trying to badmouth him even though DM22 had a good rushing year?? They had a POS defense and a rookie QB. What the heck do you expect.
Let’s put it simple:
Give me an “AVERAGE” defense – not this piss-poor bottom of the league garbage we’ve been seeing.
Give me an “AVERAGE” running game – stop with zone scheme and let the big uglies play man on man here. Be more physical!!
Give me Arians current offensive scheme with players we have.
FOLKS, WE WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS!!! Simple as that 🙂
Jameis will have a decent year because we will be balanced, and not playing from behind 14 points in the 1st quarter.

I think the problem was, the defense was never good enough to overcome his mistakes and he never realized that. He just kept making too many mistakes.
