Report: Bucs Coveted Williams
May 7th, 2019There are few people plugged into NFL circles quite like Albert Breer of theMMQB.com.
And with Joe’s ears still ringing from the Bucs crowing about how rookie linebacker Devin White is already a combination of Deacon Jones, Jack Lambert and Ronnie Lott rolled into one, Breer notes one player would have pushed White down the draft food chain away from Tampa Bay.
And that would have been defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, so Breer wrote yesterday.
The one caveat you’d hear to the fast-moving Devin White-to-Tampa train before the draft was this: If Quinnen Williams were to drop into the Bucs’ laps, that would enable them to move on from Gerald McCoy. Other teams have been waiting for an outcome in the McCoy saga. He’s due a non-guaranteed $13 million this year (with $12.5 million due next year, and $12.9 million the year after), which has made him, basically, untradeable. And that’s not to say he can’t play anymore. He can, just not at the level that would justify that kind of pay. On top of that, the Bucs need cap relief; they have less than $2 million in cap room, and a rookie class that includes the fifth overall pick to sign. Bottom line: Chances are, McCoy isn’t a Buc this year.
Basically it has come down to this: While Breer notes teams are hovering like vultures ready to pick at GMC’s Bucs carcass, no team will likely trade for him because they know he will be on the street in the near future.
It’s why the Browns, while they reportedly sniffed at GMC’s zipper (you know, Browns, Dawg Pound, hee-hee, hee-hee), didn’t seal the deal on a trade.
Joe is still puzzled as to why GMC went off on his Instagram Stories video the way he did. Was it Bucco Bruce Arians that set him off? Someone on a local radio station? Or was it one of the 3,847 anti-GMC diatribes of regular reader of Joe, “tmaxcon?”

Gmc has no value!!!!! Shocking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just watch GMC will end up winning a super bowl, it’s what happens #itsabucslife
May 7th, 2019 at 7:51 am
Tampax Con call your mom. You made it.
May 7th, 2019 at 7:54 am
Wish GMC could channel his “twitter” anger into an actual NFL game…. His tantrum just proved “he looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane!” (no disrespect to women out there)
He is a faker and the chickens have finally come home to roost for this chump!!
May 7th, 2019 at 7:55 am
@Realist,
It’s not about value. It’s the fact that the Bucs have bungled this entire situation. Everyone knows we aren’t keeping him. Why would anyone give up an assett as a result? He’s 31, not 21. When we cut him, teams will line up to sign him.
And it’s laughable that you think you are a real fan because you have this imaginary belief that McCoy isn’t any good. You’d get laughed right out of a conversation with ANYONE in the NFL – player, coach, or front office person.
May 7th, 2019 at 7:57 am
I’ve got to admit, the first thing I’ll do when McCoy gets cut is come here to see what tmaxcon has to say.
May 7th, 2019 at 8:04 am
So my Question is
IF GMC is Sooo awesome as Fans like Bonzai scream WHY DONT TEAMS TRADE FOR HIM
ANSWER because he is Good not Awesome AND the BUCS overpaid for him
Time to move on from the SCREAMING MIMI
May 7th, 2019 at 8:08 am
NFL team covets best defensive player draft. Shocking.
May 7th, 2019 at 8:09 am
If they can’t trade him out of the division, they’ll have to think real hard before they cut him…
His play may only be worth 7-8 million a year, but it may be worth another 5-6 million a year to keep him off the Saints/Falcons/Panthers roster.
I can can just see him going to New Orleans and helping them get over the hump, they’ve been knocking on the door the last couple years. Or maybe he reunited with Clayborn in Atlanta and we get to live the previous Bucs players killing us life.
May 7th, 2019 at 8:12 am
The last of the gmc-melted ice cream fans are only fans because of the media attention she gets!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is no way they actually watch the dancing clown get manhandled game after game!!!!!!!!! If they had their choice of guaranteed that gmc could be in the stupid “ring of honor” instead of playing this year, they would jump at the ring!!!!!!!!!!! Media pub is what the sheep are judging she-mc by!!!!!!!! not actual play!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And you want to know why this regime want to ship no-value she out of town?????? because she cries and complained in “EVERY” defensive scheme that was not some form of the obsolete tampa2 that featured and starred she-mc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 7th, 2019 at 8:14 am
This is why we don’t get comp picks……we cut or trade players before the end of their contracts…….
I guess it’s a double-edged sword because we are able to cut them with no guarantees…..and that’s a good thing.
This is what happened with Vinny Curry…..and several others in year’s past.
May 7th, 2019 at 8:16 am
The bucs have the NFL’s worst front office, the bucs should have traded GMC when he had legit value and they would have gotten a 1st round draft pick or a 1 and a 2, but no licht holds on to a guy that leads you to 5 wins seasons, until the glazers blow up the entire thing and start over the bucs will be the worst franchise in the NFL
May 7th, 2019 at 8:18 am
Yeah sure. Like trading back a few spots from #5 and taking Christian Wilkins to replace GMC wouldn’t have had the same potential effect…..which would have meant adding additional higher picks than what they got later on from the Rams anyways? Whatever! Sounds good! Something to write for a story.
May 7th, 2019 at 8:21 am
Disagree Realist … GMC has LOTS of value. Just not TRADE VALUE because the Bucs are terrible at playing poker (we showed everyone else our hand BEFORE the game was over?). Personally I see one of 3 scenarios unfolding BEFORE training camp starts:
1 – Bucs release GMC, save $13 mil and backfill his position with the best ‘equivalent talent’ they can find in FA.
2 – Bucs keep GMC at his current contract ($13 mil) for this year and make sufficient cuts elsewhere to pay for our rookie class (then trade him or release him next year more than likely).
3 – Bucs & GMC negotiate a new contract that would pay him less money (say around $8 mil give-or-take) but with more ‘guarantees’ built in (possibly even a no-trade-clause in addition to ‘incentives’ and more guaranteed money).
At this point it’s a stand-off. But if I had to pick a scenario, I’d pick #3 as being the best Bucs can NOW hope for since the Trade Pirate Ship sailed 1-2 years ago (that scenario depends more on GMC than on the Bucs IMO), with #2 coming in second (Bucs unilateral option). Going into the season with Vea backed up by Allen & whoever after that isn’t in BA’s best interest if he expects to ‘win now’.
May 7th, 2019 at 8:22 am
I’m still baffled at teams tripping over Williams, a one year starter
Arians himself said he wasn’t a fan of players who had one good year coming out
May 7th, 2019 at 8:28 am
Is this news? Another local site has been acknowledging this openly since March
May 7th, 2019 at 8:47 am
BTW Joe, Spotrac says we have $1.7 mil in salary Cap remaining (Top-51 rule in effect I guess), and that we’ll need $10.3 mil to sign our rookie class. Right now we have 89 on-board if you include our 8 rookies. The Bottom-8 of the current Top-51 are all at $645,000 so that’s almost $5.2 mil, BUT only 5 of the draftees will be making more than $645,000. So the Top-5 draftees ($8.7 mil) should displace the Bottom-5 of the Top-51 ($3.2 mil ‘saved’). That’d mean we’ll need to come up with $5.5 mil minus the $1.7 mil we currently have … about $3.8 mil.
IOW, all we REALLY NEED to do (I think?) is release someone in the Top-51 who’s making $3.8 mil to keep from going negative in salary Cap IF we DON’T release GMC. Hmmm, I wonder who that could be?
May 7th, 2019 at 8:50 am
The Guy has about 2 , fifteen million per season type plays per game the number could be much much much higher but that mental game he can’t control takes over !!!
May 7th, 2019 at 9:02 am
Funny, I haven’t seen any comparisons anywhere comparing Devin White to Deacon Jones, Jack Lambert and Ronnie Lott. Food for thought. I guess I’m not looking in the right places. :->)
I have seen comparisons to more recent players like Patrick Willis and Luke Kuechly.
I realize pre career comparisons are just opinions, maybe worth a little more than post draft grades are, but comparisons are fun to see.
It certainly appears that the sky is the limit for this guy.

All I can say is that my eyes are appreciative that @lauden was either banned or extremely restricted. The commentary the past couple of days has been way more interesting, thought-provoking and productive.
Thanks @joes.

What a team player GMC has become. I’m not worried about what he does after he leaves the Bucs because his play has been slipping. If all of a sudden he has a whole new revelation then It will confirm to me that he was never giving us his best anyways, though I really believe he is washed up.
May 7th, 2019 at 9:31 am
What ElBajito43 said! =D
X-D
May 7th, 2019 at 9:34 am
If GMC wants to stay in Tampa….(not move his family)…….he could probably restructure his contract with some guarantees…..around $9mil for 2 or 3 years……I think he’s worth $9…..wasn’t Vinny Curry at $8……..?
May 7th, 2019 at 9:39 am
@Tampabaybucfan
Wrong on both counts!!!!!!!! Wake up and smell the coffee son!!!!!!!!!!!!! No comp picks because licht weight is over paying backups and avg players!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A worst decision would be to renegotiate she-mc to have her in a defense that clearly she will not want to be in, rolling eyes and say backhanded insults to all the players with her passive-aggressive attitude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
she-mc has complained in every defense that was not some form of the obsolete tampa2 that featured her as the under tackle!!!!!!!!!!! WHY would any DC want that??????????
Time to let Her go so she-mc can b!tch some place else!!!!!!!!!!!
2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hawaiian Buc — I don’t agree at all tbo. 13 Million for a 31-year-old declining in play DT is exactly why he hasn’t been moved. Team inner circles talk about moving players all the time, there are countless examples of this so acting like we are the first team to shop someone is silly. It is no secret that we have no cap space & that McCoys play is declining. Any team front office worth half a grain of salt could have figured that out on their own. People aren’t as stupid as we would like to believe on these message baords…
May 7th, 2019 at 9:54 am
A FREAKING KICKER ……………..AGAIN. FIRE LICHT BRAIN.
May 7th, 2019 at 10:40 am
In the end, GMC just might be a Buc. But the salary negoiations will be hard. WHY? Because Bucs got a lineman making 10 mil this yr. If he can get 10, GMC ought to be able to get that or somethin real close. I do think there is a team out there who will pay GMC 8 to 10 mil though.
May 7th, 2019 at 11:16 am
i’ve defended licht for a long time but he screwed this entire situation up big time…..
release GMC and then sign the draft picks, ziggy and mo wilkerson…..
GO BUCS!!!!
May 7th, 2019 at 11:23 am
@ Realist
Now I’m beginning to believe you just like to disagree….
Of course we don’t get comp picks because they are cut or traded before the end of their contracts……therefore, they are not FAs…..and you need to lose a FA in order to get a comp pick.
It is also true that being able to cut unproductive players who have no guarantees is a good thing.
I’m not arguing that our players are productive or that the picks or FAs have been good…..
I’ll grant you that most of our FAs we do lose have little value……
Grimes, too old…….etc.
BAAAHHH!!! if you like.
May 7th, 2019 at 11:59 am
If the Bucs plan was to trade him all along, they went about it in the absolute worst way possible. They drove down his value as much as you can from the front office to the head coach.
Of course it’s the Bucs, so that really wouldn’t surprise me.
If their plan was to actually keep him and just wanted to restructure, well then I could understand their actions. But let’s be real, this organization is not that smart. They bungled this, just like the Bucs always do.

JPP SEASON-ENDING NECK INJURY!!!?!!
May 7th, 2019 at 12:26 pm
We have to sign Ziggy Ansah now!!! Release whoever and make it happen Bucs!

Senile,
Jones, lott, and lambert. Only one of the 3 played linebacker…
which means that you can’t find the right place because…there isn’t one. Apples to pineapples and pears.
