Doug Martin Gets Another Shot
May 1st, 2019After 723 rushing yards for the Raiders last season, his best since 2015, former stud Bucs running back Doug Martin hit the free agent market and found no takers.
But it appears an injury has saved the day.
The Raiders signed Jets castoff running back Isaiah Crowell a month ago, seemingly to replace Martin. And then they drafted Alabama RB Josh Jacobs in Round 1 of the NFL Draft on Thursday night. So it certainly appeared that Martin was permanently off Chucky’s I-love-that-guy list.
Well, Crowell blew out an Achilles in spring practice recently and Martin was re-signed today, returning to Chucky’s comforting bosom.
Now 30 years old, Martin was once honored by the Bucs with a massive likeness of himself covering a corner of the Den of Depression. He kept in great shape this offseason, per social media video, and he’ll get another shot to keep his career alive. Joe’s happy for him.
Martin also represents one less veteran running back on the street if something happens to Peyton Barber (heaven forbid), who the Bucs will rely on extremely heavily this season.

Drug Martin is BACK!
But in all seriousness, I loved Doug as a Buc, and I hope hes successful and can recapture the once-every-three-years magic he has.

Martin had a fall off after his early years and has stabilized ever since…a very good dependable back up….

He did leave us a great memory though. His game vs the Raiders where he posted over 200 yards was so much fun to watch.. especially since we can’t even rush for 100 now lol.

He has not made a team… its doubtful he makes it out of training camp…. just another loser low standard bucfan fell in love with after 1 good game…. the rest of his bucs career was filled with GARBAGE yards and not a single meaningful win

Drug Shamster would not or should not ever come back to One Buc.

Martin was quite good last year. The Raiders had no passing game, everything was a 3 yard pass, the defenses played up on the LOS, and Martin was still getting basically 4.5ypc and looked quick. The reason Gruden wasn’t a fan is because he still can’t catch, and Gruden wants his RB’s to catch the ball. Still, as a runner and pass blocker, Martin looked good last year.
The downside is I thought the Bucs should have brought him back in if they were actually worried about RB depth. He literally could start for you tomorrow and do a good job. That’s why you don’t spend high picks on RBs, unless they’re truly special.

Martin was a constant roller coaster.

Raiders brought Doug along slowly in the beginning of season, they increased his workload as the season wore on. But his injury plagued seasons seemed to follow 300 + carry seasons. Its just not worth giving a back the ball too much , Too many carries can shorten careers . Its one of the reasons Laveon Bell sat out
for a year. Just an example, Todd Gurley may not ever play up to previous seasons and he never reached the 300 carry mark, even though he was used
heavily in the passing game especially in 2018.

I hope he does well. He could use a confidence boost.

Great for him! One of the more likable former Bucs even though it didn’t end pretty…..unlike Brent Grimes.

Yep, good ‘ol Doug! The SOLE reason for our inability to run the football during his tenure!
Best wishes! Unless, of course, you’re playing the Bucs!
