Peyton Barber By Default

May 1st, 2019

Bellcow.

When the Bucs picked in the early stages of the third round, Joe held out hope.

No, the Bucs didn’t get a pass rusher in the first two rounds because, well, #ItsABucsLife.

So Joe hoped beyond hope that in the third round, with many talented running backs on board, the Bucs would solve its biggest hole on that side of the roster.

Nope. They traded back and in the very spot they vacated, the Rams drafted Memphis stud Darrell Henderson. How have the Rams been doing lately? Think this selection may have been just a coincidence? (Hearing Rams GM Les Snead on SiriusXM NFL Radio so pumped about the trade up for Henderson made Joe queasy.)

It was at that point Joe just threw his arms in the air and surrendered. Joe quit trying to figure out exactly what the Bucs were doing last weekend.

It seems Joe wasn’t the only one flabbergasted the Bucs would pass on both a pass rusher and a running back. Jamey Eisenberg scolded the Bucs for not addressing the running back position.

And even with Bruce Arians at the wheel, Eisenberg and his cohorts at CBS Sports do not see the Bucs sailing out of Buccaneers Cove (last place in the NFC South) this season. And Peyton Barber, Eisenberg believes, is the Bucs bellcow back by default.

“There’s no running back on this list,” Eisenberg said on CBS Sports HQ as a graphic flashed the 2019 Bucs draft class. “That’s a problem. You look at what Ronald Jones failed to do last year and Peyton Barber is just a guy, BUT that’s what we’re left with.”

Joe’s not sure what the Bucs can do to “address” the running back “situation” unless they trip over a running back in the undrafted free agent class, or go slumming for a running back on cutdown day in September like a hammered college kid staring at the exit of a popular college bar at last call.

When is the last time a team has actually gotten worse because of the draft?

You can watch prickly Pete Prisco and Eisenberg sound off in the video below.

We just need Jameis to play better

  2. tmaxcon Says:

Until they replace the entire right side of the worst offensive line in leage neither America’s Quarterback or Barber stand a chance…. Dotson must go or all hope is out the window

  3. Chris Simms 2020 GM Says:

    Flabbergasted!

    Fire Licht tonight!

  4. Ptwalk Says:

Joe you’re sleeping on Barber. He’s not ” JAG”. With proper coaching this will be a different team. It was never about talent. I’ll take Arians word over anybody’s right now and he said we have a running back.

  5. ruggyup Says:

Same old Bucs! Ignore opportunities for quality and improvement by being consistent in managing by chance.

  6. wausa Says:

It is hard to understand why they did not get at least one running back and one offensive linemen in this draft.

  7. SCBucsFan Says:

Realistically is a 5th round OL and RB better than an UDFA? FOr those lamenting we didn’t take one earlier, does anyone thing our backfield, as constructed, can stop any QB? This team has many holes, no GM can plug them all at once with this much damage.

  8. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Past 3 drafts they have crapped the bed on RBs and then they could have signed TJ Yeldon last week, but the Bills who have 4 RBs that are better than our #1 RB, signed him….i think BA is full of spit when he talks to the press regarding “win now”, could he legit be tanking for tua or even lawrence in 2021, by blowing the team up now and then rebuilding it into a winner for bowels or leftwich to take over?

  9. Doctor_berto Says:

Well we knew Licht and Arians did not have good draft records in the past so this comes as no surprise. This team is a mess and will continue to be a mess until we get the hell rid of Licht.

  10. Bruce Blahak Says:

Lindstrom & McGary to Atlanta, McCoy to New Oleans and Little to Carolina…our rivals get better in the trenches to run over whoever in the hell is playing on this front 7!!!

  11. TBUC North Carolina Says:

Joe… when they traded back w Rams and Rams selected my favorite back Henderson that’s when I said to Hell w this too!! Tuned back in at end of round 4 quickly and saw the kicker pick in 5 and just shook my head and left this years Licht draft!! Other GM’s laugh at Licht.. I guarantee ya

  12. Magadude Says:

A lot of people out there fail to understand that Barber has not been great because the OL last year was the pits. But with a re-tooled OL with all the new draft picks and FA signings in the past few months, Barber is ready to roll.

Oh, what? Oh. Wait a second….

  13. Alanbucsfan Says:

The new coaches can teach the OLine how to run block

  14. miken Says:

So dumb not to draft a RB but Barber can have 2 Ernie Graham years.

  15. DBS Says:

And what makes people think getting rid of the GM will solve any problem if the HC is calling the shots? Guess you missed Arians on the phone telling White he TOLD him he was going to make him the pick. Or even White telling you that is what he said. What is going on is these are the Bucs. No matter who is in charge.

  16. Jim Says:

Good luck, Peyton; got you’re work cut out for you…

  17. Not there yet Says:

To answer the question a team has never gotten worse because of the draft that’s just dumb lol. Man people just don’t learn with all the people here eating crow and apologizing to licht last off-season when he pulled off the trade for JPP then signed Curry and here are the fanatics back at it once again thanks to the Joes. Helping Weak minded fans freak out in May is kinda what you guys do best. He’s default as of today but a back could be added easily and I can understand wanting a veteran pass catcher out of the backfield instead of a rookie especially knowing no new offensive lineman were added. All this freak out over this roster is crazy. I could see it if you actually knew what this team would do under BA but the freak out it based purely on what this team did under mike smith and Dirk Koetter and people can’t seem to realize how silly that is.

  18. TBUC North Carolina Says:

    SCBucsFan
It’s not about just drafting any ole RB… Henderson is a 3 down back that will turn heads when given the chance!! We may not see him get the touches w the Rams having Gurley but the Rams traded up w Us for a reason!! And we traded back for who know what!!

  19. Jim Says:

    “your”

  20. SCBucsFan Says:

TBUC I don’t know anything about him; I know that RBs in the draft are a crapshoot. We thought he had a good one with RoJo and that appears a wasted pick. Before we say we missed on this guys lets see what he can do.

  21. TOM Says:

I’m totally done with this stinking team. It’s just a cash cow for the Glazer’s. I hope fans are smart enough not to throw away there hard earned bucks on this trash.

  22. TBUC North Carolina Says:

I Pray that my thoughts are proven on Rojo before last years draft!! Sam Darnild flew back to California to hand off and throw to Rojo for Rojas delayed pro day cause of hamstring issue!! He dropped every pass thrown his way from Darnild on that wet rainy day. But you could only think after his pro day that he was related to Roberto Duran!!! (Hands of STONE).. let’s he bought a jugs machine in the off season! And our OLine gives him a crack to get thru!! But I am truly hoping that Rojo turns into something special!

  23. AwShbucs Says:

Do yall slackjawed idiots really think that after all the great RB’s BA has been around in his career that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about when he tells you Peyton Barber is a lot better than people think he is?

Literally all Klueless Dork Koetter would have need to do last year to make Barber an 1100+ rushing yards back was two things.

    1. Do not use Peyton on zone blocking schemes specifically outside zones. Barber averaged 3.7 ypc on zone runs vs. 4.4 ypc on power.

    2. Stop handing the damn ball to Jacquiz Rodgers. Yes Rodgers has his share of decent performances in 2016/17. But he was washed up last year. Every single touch he got last season should have gone to Barber. Every one.

Peyton made any person smart enough to bet the over on his projected rushing totals a decent chunk of change last year. He’ll be doing the very same thing this year just you watch.

  24. NOSBOS Says:

Bruce Anderson looks the part. Young man has wideout hands. If Rojo can’t get it together Peyton and Bruce will do just fine.

  25. 813bucboi Says:

    bruce

    i agree….

they beefed up the trenches and drafted good pass pro RB’s to counter bowles blitz heavy scheme….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  26. Carrollwood Bucs fan Says:

People were labeling Ronde Barber a bust after his first season. So much so that the Bucs drafted Brian Kelly in the second round either the next year or the year after. Let’s see what the young kids do (RoJo, C. Davis, VHIII). Let’s not judge a rookie after one year with a now fired coaching staff.

  27. Steven007 Says:

TOM, every team is a cash cow for every owner, trust me on this. Bob Kraft made a good hire in Belichick and had good fortune drafting a QB that every team in the league (including the Pats) passed on 5 times previously. That’s what separates the Pats from the Bucs. An elite HC and a great deal of luck.

  28. Steven007 Says:

NOS, I agree, Anderson has promise. We seem to do better with free agent backs rather than drafting them anyways.

  29. Jean Lafitte Says:

    SCBucsFan asked,

“Realistically is a 5th round OL and RB better than an UDFA?”

Yes ..when considering that most UDFA’s have the ability to sign with any team they choose. So, unless the top talented UFDA’s choose the Bucs, it only seems reasonable that any drafted player should be better than the pool of UFDA’s standing in the Buc’s sign-up line.

  30. AwShbucs Says:

Nos.. said it the other day. Bruce Anderson is going to be turning heads in training camp. Based on his tape from 2017 alone I’d say he’s a lock to make the roster over Shaun Wilson. Bruce can do everything Shaun can do as far as elusiveness/ receiving ability goes in addition to possessing superior vision and open field instincts plus is able to truck fools

He’s a much different player than him but Bruce Anderson may well end up being this years Phillip Lindsay in terms of impact from an undrafted Rb. I could see him easily having close to a Charles Sims in 2015 type of season.

  31. ManzielMadness Says:

We’re going into next year with our O not changing too much (besides the loss of DJax)…Oline the same.. don’t see how this year will different from last year… at least Barber is used to getting hit behind the LOS often. Hopefully RoJo shows something but I’m not expecting much from him.

Well said my friend. And they will be eating crow yet again this year. This fan base is honestly one of the worst in the NFL and I grew up in NY watching theirs so that’s sure saying a lot. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (players and staff), the real fans have your back and we will ride with you all the way because that’s what real “family” does, they encourage and build up and give you that Pat on the back and boost you need to encourage you to go out and be the best you can be or maybe even give you that extra little bit of confidence you need to Excell to the next level. Family (which is was a fan base should be) doesn’t constantly point out your flaws and tear you down and critique ever thing you do. And please spare me the whole “the Bucs have been trash so long the fans are tired of it” because thats just an excuse ignorant ppl use to say ignorant things.

So on behalf of all the “true diehards” welcome Devin White and other draft picks and just so yall know, we got your back and support you 100 percent. And to BA and Licht “we got your back and this will be our year because the “true diehards” do exactly what the name implies. We die hard and we ain’t dead yet. GO BUCS and bring on the crow for all the non believers.

And Joe I had a couple Devin White pasaphires made up for my kid. Would happily send you one if that will make you stop crying.

  33. SCBucsFan Says:

Steven007 Belichick got fired from Cleveland… you need the right coach for the right players. All coaches are interim coaches.

  34. SCBucsFan Says:

Well said BBW… (that sounds awkward lol)… this board, since you can’t block losers (oops, users) can get a heavy negative slant. You can tell when Mom is out of the house and the kids can post on the internet and its cool to be depressing. Any real fans sees this team has issues; real fans stay the course. I’d rather be optimistic and happy then pessimistic and miserable as so many on here are.

  35. Bigbadwolf Says:

And Peyton is a BEAST!!! You’ll see that this year.

  36. Steven007 Says:

SC, exactly. And he happened to be the right hire for the Pats. That was more in response to Tom’s implication that it was only the glazers that made money from their team.

  37. SCBucsFan Says:

Steven only the Glazers make money lol that’s why so many owners are selling because they are going broke. It is comments like that that make me shake my head.

  38. Buc4evr Says:

Fixing the right side of the O-Line is the first step. Until this is done it doesn’t matter who you draft at RB.

  39. joestang Says:

This is what i’ve been saying all along. Licht is a terrible GM. He is a one man wrecking crew. For a 5-11 team to be in cap hell and have a terrible draft has left us wondering what kind of season we will have. All 3 teams in NFC south got better with draft, we got worse. The patriots had a better draft and they didn’t pick until last in 1st round. Maybe we have to hit rock bottom before Licht hits the door.

  40. Brandon Says:

It doesn’t matter what you or what anybody else thinks about the Bucs RB situation. The people inside the walls of One Buc apparently like what they have at that position. Obviously, they are comfortable with the RBs already on the roster and don’t feel the need to bring in more. We had minicamps just the other week, Arians and his staff were able to evaluate on the field as well as go back and watch all game and practice tape from last season. Why is this so hard to understand?

  41. JustaBucfan Says:

    Bigbadwolf

C’mon superfan, what’s you’re prediction for this season. Of course you’ll disappear if the Bucs suck. Especially if it’s because they didn’t fix the oline, RB and pass rush depth. Sick of you morons trying to shame fans for dissing the sorry product this team pumps out annually. I’ve been a fan since their inception and I’m sick of losing, and I’ve earned the right to be skeptical turkey. You’re from NY (figures) and probably been a fan (if you really are) for a short time. We don’t need you’re moral outrage to put us long timers in line. Go suck on your own pacifier muchacho.

  42. CChead Says:

Go get D’Ernest Johnson. All around good back. Better than anybody on this current roster.

  43. Steven007 Says:

SC, I’m sure I’m in the minority but I actually think the Glazer’s are invested and want a winner. Why wouldn’t they? Now being invested and making good decisions are completely different things. clearly the Glazer’s haven’t made good decisions when it’s come to coaching and perhaps GM (I’m not a Licht hater though he certainly makes some head scratching decisions at times). Also what Brandon said ^ …

  44. CChead Says:

    https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/2019/04/06/free-agent-rb-dernest-johnson-is-a-guy-the-steelers-need-to-consider/

  45. NOSBOS Says:

    007 and Awshucks agreed.

  46. Eric Says:

    Ronald Jones to the rescue.

Before we bury Bruce can his team play a game please?

  47. NOSBOS Says:

Tell you what baffles me. Not too long ago I was here screaming Dalvin Cook everyday and most told me it was “idiotic” to draft a RB that high to quote a famous jbf line “you can get one in the later rounds”. Now a staff that comes inn and shares that logic and people are in they’re feeling over not drafting one??? Y’all some fickle mofos man. Holyfield a week or so ago was slow for us but now that he’s a kitty cat we are in trouble??? Right.

  48. NOSBOS Says:

Also,I viewed our division rivals draft on the Bucs site. What would lead anyone to the conclusion that anyone in our division had a better draft than the Bucs??? You cray cray if you honestly feel that way. H3ll the birds and aints didn’t even have picks in a few rounds. The kitty cats biggest headliner is Burns ima Nole but I won’t be losing any sleep over facing him my G kinda slight of frame.

  49. NOSBOS Says:

And just cause the birds drafted a few Olinemen don’t mean they’ll become all pros. Just means they drafted a few olinemen. No one got as or as fast as the Bucs this past draft. No one.

  50. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

I understand the yards were not there, but Barber is a stud and the lifeblood of the offense. He is good enough that coaching should fix production. Gurley wouldn’t have done much better behind our O-line and playing from behind all last season.

    R E L A X.

  51. Eric Says:

    Excellent point NOSBOS

Lots of people said you can pick up a good running back on the streets, don’t draft one.

Now we don’t draft one and they are crying a river.

  52. Bigbadwolf Says:

    Justabucfan

I’m from NY but I’ve been in Florida and been a fan for 12 yrs. And I didn’t point out anyone directly (no names) so as the saying goes, if the shoe fits. And my prediction for this season is simple………..
The Bucs will get better. If I have to guess and that’s exactly what it will be, a guess (because myself just like everyone else on this page can’t see into the future) I would say around 8-8. I can totally understand fans being upset with the product they’ve seen but I don’t agree you should be dissing your team before the year even begins. You “hypocritical fans” want these players to go out and give everything they got and to play to their fullest potential even after all you do is talk about how horrid they are or how dumb the decision s are that they are making. Classic case of do what I say not what I do. Respect is a two way street my friend. If you want the players to win for the fans then those same fans should be encouraging those players and supporting them. I don’t claim to be a bigger or better fan than anyone else but me personally, I support what I love. I don’t constantly degrade it and tear it down. Just saying.

  53. JimmyJack Says:

We drafted all defense. The goal was to fix that side of the ball. Bruce knows he can win with the offense we have………..All year I hear you fans say that if our defense could just be average we can be a playoff team and when they draft to do just that you whine about not drafting offense……….not to mention that RB & RG positions are the easiest to fill outside the draft.

If you wanna whine cause they picked a guy you never heard of like Bunting OK. But to whine cause they used all their resources to fix the defense is narrow-minded.

Another thing that isn’t mentioned about picking 2 CBs is they surely did that because they don’t see Hargreaves as a long term option nor should they. They will work on replacing him now so they don’t have to squirm next year. It’s a move with a eye towards the future which I appreciate as a fan. Most GMs on the hotseat would not draft for the future. They would sellout to try to save their job leaving us dry for the future.

  54. JimmyJack Says:

And another thing…….let’s stop pretending like GeraldcCoy is a irreplaceable player for this defense. Get this Tampa 2 nonsense out of your head cause it’s done.

This defense will not center around that position like Tampa 2 does. In this defense you need physical spaceeaters who can stuff the run and get a push on passing downs. McCpy checks none of them boxes. He is a finesse player.

And don’t even try me with how we can possibly replace his sacks. He freaking had six. Nothing special…….How many sacks did our LBs get last year? I guarantee and will legitimately bet any fan $150 that White and David will combine the to replace McCoys sack totals. And probably more.

After sacks McCoy does little that is special in terms of QB hits, tackles and TFL.

Time to move on from this Tampa 2 mindset. Or biatch about it til the season starts when you will see a 3 tech DT is not a focal point of this team no more.

  55. Bigbadwolf Says:

And for the record, I really like joe. He’s knowledgeable and very good at what he does. I even think he has a right to be upset. Heck everyone has a right to feel however they want to feel. I do however, for the first time ever, believe he threw a bit of a temper tantrum this year. But hey no one’s perfect and everyone does it now and then, even myself.

I also believe that while joe might state his opinions and be vocal when there’s a desicion made he doesn’t agree with he still very much acts like a fan. That was just me having some fun with him because I am and was predraft a huuuuuuggggggggggeeeeeeeeee Devin White supporter. So my apologies Joe if you felt at all disrespected. That last line in the original post was all in good fun. I love your page and the work you do(even if we don’t always agree).

My post were directed to the ALWAYS negative ppl not the ones who just feel the need to complain or vent every now and then.

  56. T REX Says:

11 years of no playoffs. Lots of money invested in season tix. I can say whatever the hell I please. No cyber jack off hiding behind a keyboard is going to tell me how to be a fan. I call it like I see. I’m not gonna sit here and pretend like some pollyanna. The suck is the suck and I see 27-53 as Licht’s record. That is THE SUCK. If people want to sit around singing kumbaya and chases rainbows and unicorns…so be it. But I’ll be damned if they are going to tell me how to be a fan. Shut your pieholes!

  57. Ddbucboy Says:

    Bigbadwolf

Awsome points man. And to your credit you arent singling anyone out which is a nice change. Ive never posted before but ive read this site for a very long time. Youre a refreshing change my friend. And to anyone who is attacking bigbadwolf, youre just proving his point. And im pretty sure I figured out who you are bigbadwolf. I met a season ticket holder last year at the training camp takeover who you remind me ALOT of. The person i met had on a very special watch he wears to every game. Im thinking youre one in the same.

  58. NOSBOS Says:

So you don’t want me posting we had the best draft in our division??? You don’t want pointing out the birds and aunts didn’t even pick in two out of the seven rounds. I wonder why??? You don’t want me posting no team in our division got bigger or faster or more athletic than the Bucs.

  59. NOSBOS Says:

I guess I can’t point out how dumb it sounds for one poster to be mentioning teams in our division made they’re picks to counter our picks. As if to say they planned they’re draft boards months out in an attempt to guess what the Bucs would do draft. I guess I can’t post that huh.

  60. joshbucsfan Says:

would have preferred getting josh allen, but looking at reality now, devin white and lavonte david are gonna be one of the best linebacker duos in NFL, and in a 3-4 our line isn’t bad, its average, maybe even good depending on how vea progresses, combine that with at least a COUPLE of our dart throws at corners turning out to be decent along with twice the coaching we had last year, this defense may reasonably be able to be top 20

  61. Bigbadwolf Says:

    Nosbos and scbucsfan

I’m curious as to what your opinions would be, you seem intelligent and I need some insight on a conversation I’m currently having. Who do you believe would be the best fit to fill humps role out of the players currently on the roster not counting any recent picks. For arguments sake we will say none of the recent additions work out for whatever reason so a player who was on the roster prior to those picks must fill his role.

Everyone or anyone else feel free to answer as well. It’s an open question to anyone. I only specifically asked those two because I’m very intrigued by most of their opinions.

Heck, would love to know what Joe thinks as well on this particular subject if you got time Joe.

  62. Lord Cornelius Says:

Even if Peyton Barber was viewed as a stud you need depth at RB…

I hope this is more about Ronald Jones & Shaun Wilson catching the eyes of the staff than Peyton Barber. Barber is solid / useful IMO but you need depth and you need speed / pass catching from that position

  63. NOSBOS Says:

Bigbadwolf my battery dying on this raggedy @$$ Iphone my wife convince me to buy mainly to spy on my @$$ with this FaceTime function. I’ll remember your question and give you my opinion later tonight. Duty calling me.

  64. Defense Rules Says:

NOSBOS … LMAO. You’ve been watching too many crime dramas on TV. FaceTime won’t let your wife spy on your @$$ unless YOU accept the video call. And if you do accept it, it’s no longer spying. It’s usually followed by “Yes dear. Whatever you say dear.” Or possibly “No, I don’t know who that woman was who answered my iPhone”.

Lord C … You’re spot on; even with Peyton Barber, the Bucs need DEPTH. And even more than that, they NEED one of the other RBs to step up to the plate to COMPLEMENT Barber. For those who think of Peyton as pretty much a power back, surprise, he’s also very good catching out of the backfield & has become quite good at pass protection IMO. Still, we’d run Barber into the ground without a viable 2nd RB to complement him. Not to mention that we’d be 1 injury away from having Ronald Jones or Shaun Wilson as our bellcow RB. Good news though: the first game isn’t until Sept 8th … FOUR months away. A LOT can and will happen before we play San Fran then.

  65. NOSBOS Says:

Big bad wolf I don’t think he really needs replacing. At least not by a slot type of WR. BA said Chris will get his fair share there and I believe him. Add in the vikes were h3lla potent years ago with Chris Carter Ed Reed and this phoenom named Randy Moss years ago. None of which fit the slot type mold.

  66. NOSBOS Says:

😁I got another phone Defense I can’t stand it man.

  67. Jeffbuc Says:

Boo boo we didn’t draft a runningback. And we passed on one of the best 3rd down runningbacks in the class. Wasn’t Rojo the third rated runningback last year. And everyone praised that pick. He is going to be the homer in hitter this team needs. He is electric in the open field. 1.9 ypc later here we are calling Licht dumb for not drafting a runningback. That you guys are sure would be better than anyone we have. Rojo could very well be a different guy this year. You forget he was only 20 years old just turned when we drafted him. That’s a lot for a 20 year old to take in. From everything big bank account new city to call home just doing grown up stuff he has never had to do. It takes some guys a while. Now I’m sure he knows what to expect this year and he can focus on everything in his best way now. And he knows what type of shape he needs to be in. He could take a huge leap this year. Just cause other backs have had instant success doesn’t mean others will. You can’t give up on a guy with that much talent because he wasn’t good his rookie year. Melvin Gordon would have been run off by Bucs fans because he was bad his rookie year also.

  68. Rod Munch Says:

    Bucs are fine at RB.

Also you can get a RB anywhere. For example, let’s say Barber got high and accidentally tossed a baby in a microwave and the NFL suspended him for 8 weeks – well you could just go look at FA and sign Doug Martin and he could step right in and do the job as well, if not better.

    RB’s a dime a dozen unless you’re spending a 1st rounder on a special back.

Also I wouldn’t throw away Ronnie yet, the kid had no chance last year to do anything. For all you dopes calling him an awful bust already, go back and watch every single carry he had last year and tell me what exactly he should have done differently. There was maybe 2 plays all year where you could say he took the wrong cut (2, including preseason) but otherwise he was constantly getting hit in the backfield. No one short of Barry Sanders was going to have any success in that scenario.
