“No. It’s Not Speculative”

April 30th, 2019

The Cleveland Browns beat writer who yesterday wrote that Browns GM John Dorsey wants to trade for Gerald McCoy put his foot down on the claim this afternoon.

Steve Doerschuk of the Canton Repository, the sister (brother?) newspaper of the Akron Beacon Journal, is not wavering from his report.

He joined WDAE-AM 620 this afternoon for an interview and was asked whether he was reaching a bit when it came to the McCoy report or whether it was grounded in a hard and credible source.

“No. It’s not speculative,” Doerschuk replied saying it’s based on “conversations” and McCoy has been being “shopped for quite a while.”

Interesting.

Joe said about 37 times on the Ira Kaufman Podcast over the last several months that the Bucs could hold McCoy all the way through training camp if they want to without freaking out regarding the salary cap. Injuries pop up all the time all across the league and in Tampa, as Bucs fans know too well.

Joe suspects if Jason Licht had zero interest in Gerald McCoy across the NFL, then he would have been released already.

Good news get this bum out of town for good

  2. LakeLand Says:

Actually the Bucs don’t have a legitimate replacement for Gerald McCoy. It don’t matter if they run a 3-4 or 4-3. I don’t see McCoy replacement on the roster. They could go small upfront. That would be a huge disaster.

  3. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

“Holding on to him all the way” is about the only card Jason holds…there will be certainly TC injuries to teams starting DTs and #93 will have stronger value…

  4. pelbuc Says:

Don’t understand why any team would want to trade for a declining player with a bloated contract when you can just wait until he gets cut. All this could have been resolved by getting a quality DL guy in the 2d round but Licht was too busy trying to correct last year’s draft mistakes by drafting more DBs. SMH!

  5. tmaxcon Says:

    munch, bonzi and Hawaiian

since I am the most caring and compassionate of the bucs fanbase I am going to print you boys up some pink and baby blue crying towels with batman logos on them. to help ease the pain… i care….

  6. LakeLand Says:

The only trade that makes sense to me

Cleveland will have to include DT Larry Ogunjobi

  7. tmaxcon Says:

    lakeland

Just what are you so worried about replacing all the blowouts he has captained or maybe its the dance partys down double digits, or maybe its the zero signature games or the lack of effort and disappearing acts during big games but one thing for sure you don’t have to worry about replacing and that is meaningful wins and post season victories

  8. Buc believer Says:

I feel really bad for Cleveland. Just when they are starting to get a good roster and are starting to look up from the sewer in which they share with Tampa they are flirting with the possibility of staying there. FOR GODS SAKE CLEVELAND DONT DO IT!!!

  9. mark2001 Says:

The point is that he might have enough in the tank to help some team advance in the playoffs….for a year or two. But that likely wouldn’t be us, so if we can get a good RB for him that another team doesn’t really need, more power to both of us.

  10. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

At this point, try and get a least a couple of Twix Bars for him.

  11. LakeLand Says:

I like Terry Beckner JR, but he is a few years away

  12. Lord Cornelius Says:

Who knows with the Bucs why we do things lol

  13. Clw JB Says:

Only need 3 down lineman in a 3-4 defense right…

    LDE Gholston/Nelson
    DT1 Vea/Beckner
DT2 Allen/Roster cut or UDFA surprise

It’s not out of the realm that we trade GMC for a box of chocolates to save $13mil

If he just converts his deal to 3 years 24 mil as his swan song, he doesn’t have to go anywhere

  14. DB55 Says:

    shopped for quite a while.”
    ————-
Lol, a six-time pro-bowlers with the most sacks of any DT in the past 85 years can’t find a suitor? Wow I’m shocked! I know Tmax is shocked too.

All the real buc fans said we’d get a 2nd or 3rd round pick for Mr. McCoy. They said Jameis was the reason for losing and Fitztragic was better yet he’ll be sitting behind Josh Rosen of all people. Lololololol

But the worst part has been reading these posts for the last 2-3 days where you fans are actually defending this pitiful draft. Hey but wtfdik

But hey if we can pay 5mil per year for a back-up RB I’m all for it. —Noooooot!

  15. LakeLand Says:

    Clw JB

I mention ” legitimate” replacements for Gerald McCoy. I’m sure you don’t think those scrubs can replace a Gerald McCoy!!

  16. mark2001 Says:

Here is the deal,. If the guy we would trade for is making 4 mil, and Gerald is 13 if we keep him, why wouldn’t they trade for him if they think he is worth 9 mil? That would be the difference between unloading the RB salary and Gerald’s. And if McCoy could demand north of 9, it would cost them even more to cut their guy and sign Gerald. It could be a smart deal for both parties, and both players.

  17. Buccaneerscotty Says:

Hope you go with him tamponxcon!

  18. LakeLand Says:

It’s not easy to replace a 6 time Pro Bowl player. Easier said than done!!

  19. CalBucsFan Says:

@LakeLand Agree with you on Ogunjoni, like him better than the RB mentioned in the article. Who knows, maybe Licht is waiting for them to package them both or one of them with a draft pick before he says yes.

  20. ATrain Says:

    Answer this honestly

When watching a game did you notice when GMC wasn’t in the Game

How many games did you even hear his name other than when he helped Ben off the ground which by the way was his only Highlight of the year on Any network

  21. jabuc Says:

This is why I don’t understand not drafting Ed Oliver!! if you letting go McCoy who you replacing him with?? This team is clueless..Ed Oliver the replacement was sitting in your lap

  22. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs cut Darrelle Revis 5 years ago. And after many, many high draft picks spent on CBs. And after signing many, many CBs via free agency.

They have yet to find a replacement for Revis

  23. Not there yet Says:

It’s easier to find a nose tackle on the cheap than a 3 tech. Vea played all three positions in 3-4 in college and if it’s true he’s lost weight he could easily be the replacement for Geraldine. Vea is going to get a big second contract so I would prefer Vea replace him

  24. Buc4evr Says:

I just waiting to see how Gump screws this one up.

  25. Justafan Says:

If John Dorsey wants your guy…..you should keep him.

  26. Nick Says:

He has ZERO interest with a 13M number Joe. I will bet you a Cuban sandwich Mr. Bucs leader will go play somewhere else for a LOT less! 5-7 range.

It’ll be a great day in bucks history when they finally dumped this turd.

  27. Mike Johnson Says:

Buc fans said nothin when we paid easy Sweezy Millions for yrs..to laugh and rehab. They say nothin to paying an average center named Ryan 10 mil this yr. Yet, when it comes to a consummate repeat pro bowler, they bark. If I was GMC I would be..demanding a trade or release. Somebody will give him 10 to 12 mil. You picked the wrong scapegoat finnicky Buc fans.

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We could bring in a “bulked up” Myron Lewis…..& the spectacular Stevie T is still on the roster.

  29. Andrew Says:

Can’t believe the glazers let a bad GM run this team for 6 years and show Gerald the door in such a terrible fashion. Gerald has done a ton for this place, whether we’ve won or not.

  30. macabee Says:

Vita Vea signed a four year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers worth $14,824,238 on May 24, 2018. I suspect about this time this year Devin White will sign his contract. This matter or the alternative will have long been settled. Count on it!

  31. LakeLand Says:

All I’m saying is that it’s not easy to find a replacement for Gerald McCoy. And I’m not talking putting bodies on the field in his place. I’m talking someone as productive as him. A player that impact the game like him.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Richard Nixon: “I am not a thief!”

Really, what was the guy expected to say?

“Of course I made it up!”

Let’s see if Tmax has a suggestion or if he wants to continue to be nothing but useless on JBF

  34. stvcl Says:

17 solo tackles 11 assists last year. How will we ever replace this stellar play. Can’t wait to see you in a different uniform Geraldweenie.

  35. LakeLand Says:

And what was Beau Allen, Will Gholston, Vita Vea stats like?

  36. Max Says:

how does tmaxcon always get first comment on gerald mccoy posts, this must be a conspiracy!! Joe(s) is Tmaxcon!!

  37. tmaxcon Says:

Keeping the face of and leader of the most embarrassing defense in nfl history deserves whatever he wants just ask her….

  38. LakeLand Says:

If I’m not mistaken Gerald McCoy had more sacks than all of the other DTs combined. And you can include Will Gholston. But you all are comfortable with the Bucs DTs.

All I have to say is…ok

  39. LakeLand Says:

The Tennessee Titans has claimed Joe Dirt off waivers

  40. Billy_43 Says:

Wouldn’t be surprised if Oliver doesn’t pan.
Please get over anyone NOT named Devin White.

    Made the pick it’s over.
Now to find out what they do.
    Exciting news.

  42. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

I’m sure this news has (somehow) a lot of people jumping for joy. But what I dont understand is, how come everyone cried like babies all Draft Weekend that we didnt address the line, but then want to turn around and throw a Top-5 DT out the window for absolutely nothing.

    Stupid can’t be fixed I guess…

  43. tmaxcon Says:

    1st

Who is this top 5 dt you mentioned

  44. Bird Says:

I would hAve thought McCoy was a dead man walking a few weeks ago.

However , they avoided Dline like the plague in the draft so not sure they can let him go now. Browns will have to give Bucs a sweet deal to consider making this move.

I mean if Vea gets injured again , what do they have in the middle ? A whole lot of nothing

  45. LakeLand Says:

Gerald McCoy had 21 QB hits and 6 sacks in 14 games. That pretty darn productive to me.

    Sheldon Rankins
    16 Games, 8.0 sacks, 15 QB hits

    Grady Jarrett
    14 Games, 6.0 sacks, 16 QB hits

    Kawann Short
    14 Games, 3 sacks, 7 QB hits

  46. BucEmUp Says:

Trade him for Duke Johnson. We need another back this should be a no brainer

  47. SCBucsFan Says:

With only four articles a day on this subject I’m sure these comments will be filled with all kinds of new thoughts.

  48. BucEmUp Says:

Bird Vea was an iron man in college. It was just all the b.s following the combine and through the entire draft process lack of conditioning. Vea is going to be a caged animal come opening day and destroy whoever is in front of him.

  49. Magadude Says:

All well and good, but let’s do it sooner rather than later…so we can get Duke acclimated and settled.

  50. JabooBuc Says:

seems somewhat overlooked but they did draft 2 DLineman in the draft

  51. Clw JB Says:

Lakeland -I think the new regime plans on the three lineman being run stoppers not sack producers -the pressure comes from all 4 LB, S and CB blitz in this scheme

Outside of Vea, he is better than all of them still, but less important in this scheme IMO and why they would let him walk

  52. LakeLand Says:

    Will Gholston
    16 Games, 1 sacks, 7 QB hits

    Vita Vea
    13 Games, 3 sacks, 4 QB hits

    Beau Allen stats
    14 Games, 0 sacks, 3 QB hits

  53. LakeLand Says:

    Clw JB

    Only time will tell

  54. RustyRhinos Says:

Stvcl, “17 solo tackles 11 assists last year” you forgot to add the dance moves during a losing game. Not even after the game but during.
Yea a multiple Pro Bowl player, but what did he say last year after he got back from hanging out with all those other Pro Bowl players. What did they tell him ? Gerald you are not making plays when it counts, you are not getting to the QB when it matters. You are not making game changing plays. He said he was taking that to heart. I guess it showed in his stats. Or his dance moves. Take your pick. It was sure not with his stellar playmaking when it counts. Have any of us really ever seen him make plays that change the game at a important part of the game. Remember McCoy has been the Captain of the defense for several seasons in a row. And most of those were bad seasons.
It sucks I had hoped he would be a much better player in his time here. It just did not show up on game day or the record books in Wins and losses.
Good luck Mr. McCoy wherever you go.

    GO!BUCS!

  55. Ricordo Says:

Talk of trade/cut might be one way of negotiating the restructuring GM’s contract.

No Florida income tax is important for some folks.

I’d hate to see him go. He’s double-teamed constantly.

  56. Joe Says:

how does tmaxcon always get first comment on gerald mccoy posts, this must be a conspiracy!! Joe(s) is Tmaxcon!!

Joe doesn’t time TMax’s response but the anything GMC is like a dog whistle for him.

  57. Eric Says:

I’d rather keep McCoy if he eas willing to take less in a restructured contract. However, if he refuses and looks at himself in the elite class then trade him.

I assume the bucs have attempted this to no avail.

  58. Reach87 Says:

Lol. You say he was not productive yet when Lakeland shows you the numbers, they don’t matter. Talking out your a$$. Remove the bias and say what it is… you just don’t like him because he makes so much money and draws his happiness from a place you can’t understand (faith and family). Go Bucs!

  59. Sweet Lou Says:

Sapp isn’t walking thru the door, Gerald does his job but not at 13 mil. Restructure and keep the best we have.

  60. Mike10 Says:

So I reflect on this Defense, and I think about watching play at the D line as the ball is snapped.
I imagine taking Gerald McCoy’s presence out of it, I can’t see anything worse that what I’ve watched. I’m not ignoring some (at least) every other-series-altering play where he just crashes the backfield, because I haven’t seen it.

Gerald McCoy is a great guy and good teammate, which is also exactly what defenders of McCoy say he brings to the table. I want ferocity, a serious work ethic, someone that tears into loafers and sets the culture on that line and in the huddle. It’s because he didn’t bring that and it’s what we lost with Alexander’s departure, that we HAD to draft w the 5th overall pick… (also a reflection on our management, but that’s for another day).
We look at the “culture” that McCoy was a consistent part of, and that’s below average defenses with historic lows in sack totals and turnovers.
Let me ask you something, how many double digit sack seasons did McCoy have? ZERO. Why? I don’t know either!!
Gerald, thank you for being a stand up dude, an advocate in the community and a model citizen. But when you lost your C last year, it sent a message about your role on this team. And for you to come back in 19 and expect nothing less than a 13 million dollar commitment from this team , with your production, is selfish. Take 6 mil bc u want to retire a buc and understand you may be rotational. Otherwise, go be a mercenary like Adrian Claiborne. (Plus, it’d be cool if we could sign Suh)

  61. Destinjohnny Says:

Thank god he didn’t give Licht any more pics in his draft as this is his worse one.
The new gm hopefully will use them wisely

  62. tmaxcon Says:

    Max

I follow Joe on twitter. Nothing is more comical than reading the cancer93 apologists making excuses to justify their failed hero…. i also employ two strippers full time, one for my Jameson addiction and the other to point out low standard bucfans stupid comments or attempts to rewrite history so i may set the record straight. It’s a good life…. plus the local gentlemens club has blazing fast internet and a badass dab rig…

Only hope the young bucs have is to get cancer93 out of town on first bus available

  63. CChead Says:

If you have to get rid of one guy? Who would it be?
    McCoy? Or Brate?

  64. tmaxcon Says:

    Reach87

He is paid to win and be great not for his reproductive abilities or cult memberships ….. nowhere in a nfl contract does faith or family appear…. just win everything else is irrelevant

  65. ElioT Says:

At this point I am okay with keeping McCoy at a restructured & reduced salary.

#Lichtmyb*lls and Arians botched the sales pitch for a trade (more than McCoy did with his lack of production in recent years).

If McCoy is here, HE BETTER bow down to the new leader of this defense! Mr. Devin White.

This draft pick of White is flying under the radar so much.

I can’t believe the maturity of this guy at such a young age, it’s astonishing to be honest.

Dude is a born leader, doing it the right way. No bullsh*t fake leadership posturing, he’s a real man already and I’m 100% sold.

  66. Jameis Almighty! Says:

GMC is a HOFer. Why all the hate!? Fire Licht!

  67. ATrain Says:

Imagine what he could do if he didn’t take plays off

  68. Dom>Licht Says:

Trade him for a DB don’t have near enough

  69. Defense Rules Says:

OK, prognosis time. Steve made the point in today’s podcast with Ira that “It just doesn’t look that good on paper”. To an extent, I disagree. Look at our POTENTIAL defensive roster (I’m assuming that we keep 24 players on defense):

o DTs (4) – Vea, Allen, Beckner AND GMC.
o DEs (3) – JPP, Nassib and Nelson.
o OLBs (3) – Barrett, Spence and Bond.
o ILBs (4) – David, White, Bucannon and Minter.
o CBs (5) – Davis, Bunting, Dean, VHIII and Ryan Smith.
o Safety (5) – Justin Evans, Whitehead, Edwards, Brice and Stewart.

Decent DLine & ILBs. OLBs MIGHT be a little shaky. CBs & Safeties will need a LOT of work to gel as a Secondary, BUT … there’s quite a bit of talent there to work with. Point being, on paper it’s not as bad as some seem to feel it is. Decent size and LOTS of speed. Plus we’re a LOOONG WAY from publishing our final 53-man roster to start the season with.

Just keep telling yourself … ‘Last season we gave up 464 POINTS. That’s 29 Points per Game average. We were #31 in the NFL in POINTS ALLOWED. THERE’S NO PLACE TO GO BUT UP’.

  72. Buc4evr Says:

We don’t have anyone that’s ready to replace GMC. Vea isn’t ready yet and Gholston is not the answer. But I expect that Gump will trade him or cut him. Another Michael Bennett mistake in the making.

  73. JabooBuc Says:

Not a huge fan of GMC but never understood all the hate for the guy in this town. That being said, no way he’s a HOF.

  74. SCBucsFan Says:

If I’m McCoy why restructure, to stay here? If he’s taking a pay cut he will go somewhere that has a chance to go to the playoffs. If Winston leaves then these 5 win seasons will seem like glory days, why hang for that.

  75. Anglican Says:

If they do trade GMC with Jason Jump in a pool with a suit on without his water wings. maybe then will be clear of 2 hemorrhoids

  76. Buccaneerscotty Says:

Your just a troll and piece of trash looser good day scumbag…

  77. Not there yet Says:

If Geraldine was a top 5 d tackle he would have already been paid, stop living in the past. I’d say Mark Dominick treated Simeon rice and Derrick Brooks much worse. Bottom line is day one white is being billed as something Geraldine never was and that’s a strong leader. How you let your team get blown out week after week and you can’t even inspire guys to fight for pride.

When you are due 13 million and can’t even get voted as team captain it’s over for you as it should be so forget the trips down memory lane because as a fan the decade he played are the years we want to forget most

  78. Steven007 Says:

Scotty, his name is trollmax for a reason…

  79. Don Says:

Vita Vea not exactly “small up front”

  80. Wiscobucsfan Says:

Well it would suck to see him go, even if necessary for cap reasons. However, he does deserve a shot at the playoffs and it obviously wasnt going to happen here for him. I’ll be cheering for you in January mccoy!

  81. Tvan101 Says:

We know you always try to be right but get off it you domt have any more of an idea than we the fans do when it comes to McCoy.

  82. Bucs96 Doggie Says:

McCoy @ the Warriors game w/ the wife in the 1st row. Good for him enjoying his time away from the team lol. Bucs don’t know what to do w/ anything good in their possession.

  83. westernbuc Says:

Licht has completely bungled this. Either pay McCoy his contract (crazy concept) or release him. Disrespectful to 93’s legacy to drag this out.

It’s insane. Our DT situation is horrendous behind GMC. Yeah, he’s not worth 13 mil, but we have no one that matches his production or talent. If we’re really in “win-now” mode, I just don’t see how cutting GMC helps that.

Oh by the way, Atlanta just gave Koetter two first round offensive linemen. Curious to see how that plays out…

  84. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

Honestly other than salary cap I dont want to lose McCoy this year but the whole we dont have a replacement for him thing I dont get cuz when we drafted vita vea wasnt everyone saying he’d eventually be his replacement

  85. Magadude Says:

@JabooBuc…I don’t see much disdain for GMC other than here. He still gets a wild welcome before games, big time autographs at practices and events, and the worst I hear about him other than here is ackknowledgement he’s on the wrong side of 30 and it shows.

  86. Anglican Says:

    MAGA
In sect 148 at the Ray Jay everyone around my 4 seats dont care for him.

  87. Bucsfanman Says:

Thee Bucs are not in a position to let even average players walk out the door. That said, it’s time to close this chapter. If we can get anything for him, great. If not, we need to be ready to move on anyway. We were going to lose him eventually/soon and with this offseason’s antics, I think it’s time.
I think we’ll be able to figure out a way to replace his production.

  88. Magadude Says:

@Anglican…I don’t doubt what you are seeing…just saying he is still pretty popular. I have seats in 110 and 208 and it’s mostly positive, more rousing than most other players on the D. Of course, as the games there go on over the last 10 years or so, it’s rarely love for a lot of people after the intro!

  89. Bucko40 Says:

Good god people do you even stop to think before you post. Last years draft picks weren’t a mistake. Those players fit the system that was run by Koetter and Smith at the time. The fact is now that Tampa NEEDS a different skill set type of players. This turnover/turnaround in players is going to take some time to complete.

I’d wish McCoy stays but in reality the Bucs have to make some tough decisions to create cap space. the easiest way to do that is trade (if you can find a buyer) McCoy or release him. The other way would be to cut Gholston and trade Cameron Brate! this would clear up just over 10 million IMO.

  90. wideleftandright Says:

Trade GMC for Johnson and we can give them our our kicker or DB pick next year.

  91. TOM Says:

Other than the salary cap keep him. I think the main thing over all is the salary cap.

  92. Buc1987 Says:

Trade him for a bologna sandwich. If you can.

  93. geno711 Says:

So I ask this — What news has Steve Doerschuk ever broken that no one else knew that turned out to be correct?

His interview on WDAE is a joke.

Steve Doerschuk before the draft said that the Browns were clearly going to take an offensive lineman in the 2nd or 3rd round this year.

How bout this: Steve Doerschuk in 2014 compared head coach Mike Pettine favorably to Paul Brown.

  94. ElBajito43 Says:
