Dominik Thinks Bucs Keep GMC
April 25th, 2019Many folks inside and outside of NFL circles believe the Bucs will soon part ways with stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.
The man who drafted GMC isn’t on board with this concept.
Former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik, speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio today while co-hosting “The Blitz” with Bruce Murray, predicted the Bucs will draft LSU linebacker Devin White at No. 5 tonight instead of a pass rusher — which Dominik confessed may be a bigger need — in part because the Bucs will keep GMC.
Now we must remember GMC has yet to show up for voluntary workouts at One Buc Palace since the start of team conditioning on April 1. This is very unusual because GMC, who prides himself as a team leader, would normally be here.
And Bucco Bruce Arians vehemently denied he told GMC to stay away from One Buc Palace.
Dominik, of course, was speaking about how he thought the draft would play out in the first round and began speaking about the Bucs.
“They have a big decision on Devin White,” Dominik began. “I think that is one that is staring them in the face going, ‘Look, we don’t pay a linebackers what we play a pass rusher.’ I don’t lean to them taking a defensive tackle. I think Gerald McCoy is going to be there. Obviously, they took Vita Vea last year. They have their two interior guys.
“They need a young pass rusher. But they also need another linebacker to put next to Lavonte David. I think Devin White, I think they are leaning toward that over Josh Allen just because they are looking for an emotional, outspoken, high-energy linebacker to be part of that crew.”
Joe just cannot properly put into words what an overreach that would be to pass on a pass rusher to draft a cartoon character at No. 5. Let’s think about this for a second: Everyone Joe has ever talked to who collects or collected a paycheck from Team Glazer called Kwon Alexander the emotional leader of the defense and the heart and soul of the defense and the Jameis of the Defense.
And what exactly did the Bucs get from all that woofing and hollering and pony-riding and stomping and frothing at the mouth? It got them the worst defense in the history of mankind, that’s what it got them.
If a team passes up on the most important position on a defense because some dude puts out a killer audition tape for the next starring role of the Tasmanian Devil in “Looney Tunes,” there is something terribly wrong in the evaluation process of football players at One Buc Palace.
How about instead of acting like Yosemite Sam, someone produce like an NFL player, huh? Is that too much to ask?
And if the Bucs do indeed keep GMC as Dominik believes, who gets tossed overboard? The Bucs, as currently set up, will be wildly over the salary cap unless GMC takes a massive pay cut.
April 25th, 2019 at 4:20 pm
If he brings is salary inline with his market value…resign him to a new contract…2 years 13 million guaranteed
April 25th, 2019 at 4:22 pm
FAREWELL GMC
April 25th, 2019 at 4:24 pm
If he restructures I’m fine, it would show a lot to his teammates, fans and front office.
April 25th, 2019 at 4:24 pm
how many MORE times is DOM going to be wrong?….lol….
its time to close the GMC chapter…..good player…good guy…be the sang is true…nice guys come in last…..
cut GMC, draft ed oliver and lets win some f’ing games!!!!!!
#REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!!
April 25th, 2019 at 4:31 pm
Would be dumb to dump a year in, year out, pro-bowler over a few dollars when FA has already passed. If they can trade him for something of value, then OK, I guess that’s fine – but to just dump him for the sake of freeing up some cash when they have other ways to free up cash is just dumb. The team isn’t in salary cap hell, they’re in a mildly inconvenient situation. Freeing up the money so they can keep a bum like Evan Smith around, like Gholston around, is just dumb.
April 25th, 2019 at 4:31 pm
This likes spread some peanutbutter freely to make sure everything is covered. I’d not be suprised with this scenario. I might not like it, but it won’t suprise me. And it’s why the Bucs are such a bad team.
April 25th, 2019 at 4:32 pm
This just means we aren’t keeping GMC
April 25th, 2019 at 4:33 pm
Spoken by the man who is neck and neck with Jason Gump as the WORST GM in the history of the NFL maybe even other sports as well. Way to go keep posting articles on way Dom would do…. SHEESH
April 25th, 2019 at 4:35 pm
Wow!! Halirous article title. “Dominick thinks” Laughed so hard at that there was no reason to read another piece about (G)rab (M)y (C)heck for more laughter.
April 25th, 2019 at 4:39 pm
Josh Allen + (a less expensive) Gerald
Let’s GOOOO
April 25th, 2019 at 4:46 pm
I heard Mississippi coach call their former safety Jonathan Abrams a “Tasmanian devil” and he meant it as a compliment. I’ will take Devin White if he is that tasmanian devil and take either trade back in the first round for jaylen Ferguson or coach up Spence, draft Joe Jackson from the U or do some scouting.
April 25th, 2019 at 4:51 pm
if they can’t trade him and they don’t love their DL haul in the draft, they might (and probably should) keep him for one more season. but i think one of those two things will happen, and the bucs move on whether with a cut or a trade
April 25th, 2019 at 4:55 pm
Trade back and get more picks. This is one of the deepest drafts in the last five years on defense. We need depth
April 25th, 2019 at 4:56 pm
Wow. Joe, you finally made some sense. Congrats!!!
April 25th, 2019 at 5:00 pm
Well if Dominick says it, the opposite will come true.
Dominick = Bizzaro World
April 25th, 2019 at 5:01 pm
Okay so joe is at the point of insulting Devin white. Lol
Welcome to Tampa, Devin! Here’s the media. By the way this one thinks you’re the Tasmanian devil.
I think there’s something terribly wrong with your evaluation. If bosa Williams Oliver and Allen are gone, the pick is white. Bpa and position of need.
It’s really that simple.
April 25th, 2019 at 5:10 pm
Dom just hanging on to one of the only 2 decent players he drafted in 5 years; which he needed a top 3 pick to get.
Whatever he says do the opposite please
April 25th, 2019 at 5:10 pm
Joe this bias against a linebacker is turning you into a cartoon character.
April 25th, 2019 at 5:11 pm
If Q doesn’t fall and Bucs don’t trade out of 5…White is the pick.
April 25th, 2019 at 5:16 pm
I wish Joe would clear this up for all of us. I am not sure if he prefers a LB or an edge rusher be taken tonight. It would be nice if he would just come out and say it…….or just go nonstop talking about it. He is so set in his ways there is no way he won’t be sobbing tonight it White is the pick. Yet many many experts out there thinks it should be White and it is a more pressing need. There are many solid D linemen that will be available early in the 2nd round. Ferguson, Polite, and maybe even Simmons. I would be fine with any of them. They should have an awful season in 2019 so give Simmons a year to heal up and a top 3 pick most likely next year and they could start to really build a defense by then.
April 25th, 2019 at 5:34 pm
If they keep GMC for two years due to restructure deal, and draft White that is win-win. GMC buys the Bucs some time. That is the best option to address needs. The best alternative is to trade him tonight but that won’t be for a high pick, so if they draft an edge rusher that’s only one hole filled of many.
BTW, the thing from Bruce about taking the best guy on the board over a need only works when you don’t have gaping holes. He is bluffing when he says that. They all are. You ALWAYS go with needs and you only get fired when the guys you do draft don’t produce and you lose (kinda like Licht has done). Let’s clear that nonsense up right now.
So if you can plug a hole a bit by keeping GMC, like him or not, and draft a stud LB, that is a decent COA.
April 25th, 2019 at 5:39 pm
Dominik is a rockstar at being wrong so GMC is gone
April 25th, 2019 at 5:41 pm
This is the reason Dominik is no longer employed by any NFL teams, he constantly is wrong. I can see no way in which McCoy is a Buccaneer next year due to the salary cap, which we have next to zero space left to sign any one let alone 7 draft choices. Hard math says someone has to go and McCoy makes $13 million with dwindling returns. Six sacks each of the last 2 seasons is not an elite pass rusher and can easily be replaced for much less money.
April 25th, 2019 at 5:53 pm
I’m starting to root for us to draft Devin White…..just so we can see how Joe treats him once he is a Buc.
This obsession over pass rushers has been going on for several years and has culminated tonight. It began with Michael Bennett’s exit (Dominick)……FYI, I don’t recall him ever being fingered for that.
Devin White is unarguably the best linebacker in this class and perhaps several others. I will be happy if he is a Buc. But, I would also be very happy if one of the big 3 defensive players falls to us….or if we trade down and get Bush, Oliver or Sweat.
April 25th, 2019 at 5:56 pm
GMC and our #1 for Raiders #’s 24 and 27, their 2nd round picks this year and next. Use #27 and a 2nd rounder to move back up and get D.White, and we still have another 1st rounder for DL or edge.
April 25th, 2019 at 6:00 pm
Joe several readers have points out all the logical flaws in your argument yet you ingore it all and continue to look at these prospects as positions as if this is Madden on PlayStation.
It seems you have chose to give no credit to the actual person that is being considered.
So I will share a new flaw to your proven failed logic. That would be Jonny Football. The guy you wanted. Had the Bucs put player position in such high reguard(like you are doing with EDGE) we had to take Jonny in 2014 because his position is most important, or maybe they go Bridgewater.
The person matters Joe. It’s always has and always will. You may come up with 1000 more angles(have we resorted to Looney Tunes arguments?? You can do better) and keep arguing but all of them will include flawed logic unless you give a shred of consideration to the actual player being considered.
Has your goal been to influence readers to despise LB? And if so why?
April 25th, 2019 at 6:06 pm
When a QB gets rushed from the outside he can step up in the pocket. When he gets rushed up the middle he has problems. White and David will do this in 3-4 schemes.
April 25th, 2019 at 6:16 pm
In the back of my mind, I have been thinking that McCoy was told not to come in so that people thought there was an issue between him and the Bucs, and teams would think they would go after his replacement.
Also, maybe they are avoiding saying how far along Beckwith is in his recovery so that everyone thinks we are going after White.
That would be genius…because if he is actually healing up already, we don’t actually NEED White.
But teams thinking we do might trade up to get White before us…which would cause one of the DL players to drop a notch or two.
April 25th, 2019 at 6:20 pm
The irony?
That Bucs do not actually have to restructure McCoy. They could keep him another year, pay him the $13m and cut release him next year.
Newsflash…even if they get out of his salary, who would they spend it on? Kwon and Humphries are gone. Most of the good free agents are gone. And according to Scott over at the Buccaneers website, the draft salaries are actually already accounted for.
So unless the Bucs need to sign someone, what is the point in trying to restructure McCoy? If you do that, he gets more guarantees.
And, btw…Rick Stroud lied when he said Arians told McCoy to stay home. Arians as much as said it was a lie…and Stroud was right in front of him.
April 25th, 2019 at 6:21 pm
Make sure to tell us how you feel Joe over and over and over again, how did that work out with Johnny football and Derwin James?
April 25th, 2019 at 6:27 pm
All of the analysts are drooling over Devin White……several agreed that he is the 2nd best defensive player in the draft behind Bosa.
I think he’s the third behind Bosa & Williams….
Please don’t disrespect this guy on the biggest night of his life….he’s worked hard to get here and will be a top ten pick……he’s earned respect….not constant berating.
April 25th, 2019 at 6:42 pm
@Rod Munch … “The team isn’t in salary cap hell, they’re in a mildly inconvenient situation”. Love the wording Rod. ‘MILDLY INCONVENIENT’ as in Over-the-Cap has us in #32 place with only $1.795 mil? Or ‘MILDLY INCONVENIENT’ as in Spotrac has us in #32 place with only $1.712 mil?
When you’re sporting 5-11 records for the past 2 years, have several significant holes in your defense (and offense), and have mediocre depth compared to most winning teams, I’d say that our situation is slightly more than ‘MILDLY INCONVENIENT’. Might even lean towards the side of ‘It’s a friggin mess’.
And in regards to Evan Smith & Will Gholston, neither is All-Pro material, but they’ve both contributed a LOT more to the Bucs than Ronald Jones, Caleb Benenoch, Noah Spence, Riley Bullough and a number of others who are still on our roster. (Those 4 players BTW make more collectively than the 2 veterans E Smith & Gholston make, and collectively represent about $4 mil in dead money). I’d take Smith & Gholston over those 4 for depth any day.
April 25th, 2019 at 6:45 pm
Bonzai…….My guess is that the Bucs do not want to keep McCoy because he I’d our unheralded & unquestioned leader.
The Bucs want him gone and they want a hole at the Captain position for defense. Bruce wants a new leader for that side of the ball that will command a different type of energy then McCoy does.
I look to the draft to see the Bucs try and find that guy. And what better way then with a #5 pick. This is why D.White would excite me because his leadership skills are highly touted. Not a knock on the other prospects. It just happens to be one of Whites top attributes.
McCoy is already gone in my eyes. Out with the old in with the new.
Let’s get good first then we can be great!
GO BUCS
April 25th, 2019 at 6:46 pm
Defense Rules: I think Rod’s point is that you make some quick moves like cutting those two players along with McCoy and you are no longer in salary cap hell. Sure you have to replace those players but it’s possible to quickly remedy the situation.
April 25th, 2019 at 6:50 pm
We are way over the cap and have no money to sign our draftees. Only way out of that jam is to cut or trade Mccoy
April 25th, 2019 at 6:56 pm
DR…….If you put an eye towards the future the Bucs are in a marvelous situation. We have more options and flexibility then most teams which goes overlooked often.
Also looking at numbers on the internet means a lot less since we have a new HC……There will be roster turnover. Who and how is anybody’s guess but you will not find the names of many of the final roster players any where on the internet because they are not Bucaneers yet.
One example for you is a guy like Noah Spence. He has not made the final roster yet and is owed next to no CAP money. The CAP is a figment of the internet’s imagination…………A good ole boy told me that today and he was right.
GO BUCS!!!!
April 25th, 2019 at 6:58 pm
We are not over the cap. The reason is simple and it is because you cannot possibly be over the cap in April.
That’s a fact Jack.
April 25th, 2019 at 6:58 pm
What about Joe’s prediction before the respective drafts of Josh Freeman and Lavonte David?
April 25th, 2019 at 7:02 pm
I guaranDAMNtee that White is far superior to Kwon Alexander! Yeah he was a great emotional leader but THATS IT! Get off it Joe, your just spew bullspit left and right..shovelin sh!t and callin it sugar.
April 25th, 2019 at 7:04 pm
Extend GMC, then fire him with multiple years remaining on his contract. It’s the Team Glazer way! Spandau Ballet-lovin’ Bucs ex-GM wouldn’t have it any other way.
April 25th, 2019 at 7:08 pm
Why would we keep him? He’s a total distraction.
April 25th, 2019 at 7:17 pm
You were spot on with David and whoa could have seen Freeman turn into a Michael Jackson type dumpster fire. Lol I have been reading your site since the beginning. I just gotta give you a hard time for pushing your opinion every once in awhile.
April 25th, 2019 at 7:19 pm
@Bonzai … “And according to Scott over at the Buccaneers website, the draft salaries are actually already accounted for”. Don’t think that true Bonzai. Over-The-Cap posted a good article by Jason Fitzgerald just a week ago titled ‘The Cap Space Required to Sign Draft Picks’ (it’s at https://overthecap.com/the-cap-space-required-to-sign-draft-picks/).
According to Fitzgerald, “The Bucs are the only team that probably has to make a significant move down the line” (meaning free up Cap Space to sign our rookies). After subtracting the players who’d be ‘bumped’ by the rookies, he shows us needing to come up with an additional $3,911,583 in Cap space. BTW, the Panthers, Falcons & Vikings are the only other NFL teams in NEGATIVE numbers in terms of remaining Cap room after signing their rookie pool (and they all range from about $200K to $600K deficit). We’re all by ourselves by a longshot.
And with the extra money that’d be freed up if GMC is released, I’d love to see us spend it on (1) a starter-caliber outside CB; (2) a veteran RB to complement Barber; (3) a starer-caliber Right Guard and MAYBE an experienced Safety. Call me paranoid when it comes to INJURIES and LEADERSHIP.
April 25th, 2019 at 7:24 pm
Maybe not officially over the cap but assuming the players currently signed to contracts plus the money required to sign the drafted players would put us over the cap.
So some players will have to go or restructure their salaries.
The obvious one is McCoy with younger replacement available in the draft.
April 25th, 2019 at 7:34 pm
Sorry Joe you playing Madden and looking at a passrusher with a 90 overall grade vs a LB with a 93 overall grade.
Like I said Joe……the actual person always has and always will matter most of all. No Trump suit is greater………….And none ever will be.
The ultimate crow you could eat on this would be if the Bucs didn’t draft any Edge players til the end of the draft…..or even undrafted. Then see them Excel and outplay 1st round graded players…………BTW that exact scenario happens each and every season in the NFL54 years consecutively…………..But I’m guessing you don’t know and guess you are the Joe that doesn’t follow the NFL(meaning the Joe the watches cartoons while the Super Bowl is on TV cause you just don’t like it.)
April 25th, 2019 at 7:47 pm
Comparing Kwon to Devin… Devin White is way faster, plays lower, more twitchy and takes on O-lineman better being 20 pounds heavier. White blitzes sooo much better.
April 25th, 2019 at 7:48 pm
Draft white keep gmc an draft a DE you can be coached up the next few season to be a star problem solved an the salary the glazers can find more money under their coach haha go bucs
April 25th, 2019 at 7:57 pm
Defense Rules,
Scott Smith said in two different Bucs Insiders that the Draft pick salaries were already added. He even checked with higher ups. So Over the Cap is wrong.
April 25th, 2019 at 9:52 pm
You can’t keep Batman unless you can restructure him for about 40 percent of his current salary.
