The Bucs And Elgton Jenkins

April 25th, 2019

Yeah, tonight’s the big first round of the NFL Draft, but Joe’s not expecting fireworks.

Barring a special trade offer, the Bucs will sit tight and, hopefully, do the smart thing and draft a defensive lineman.

Joe’s already more focused on Round 2.

If the Bucs have a two-year plan on the whiteboards of One Buc Palace, Joe assumes center Ryan Jensen is not part of it. His $10 million salary is guaranteed this year but not in 2020.

When you look at the O-line pecking order, Donovan Smith and Ali Marpet rank higher at One Buc Palace. They’re younger and have more Tampa years of service than Jensen. Smith also has guaranteed money for 2020. The Bucs’ salary cap situation makes it highly likely they won’t be able to afford all three next year.

So this is why Joe could see the Bucs falling in love with Mississippi State center/guard Elgton Jenkins. Scouts love his versatility at 6-4, 310 pounds. He’s also lauded for his technique and success against top opponents. Joe can’t find anyone who thinks Jenkins isn’t a plug-and-play talent at center or guard, which is a current Bucs need.

Joe sees Jenkins as a guy the Bucs might trade up for within the second round. The Bucs sit with the No. 39 overall pick, the No. 7 choice on Day 2.

Joe would applaud such a move. You simply cannot go wrong drafting a quality O-line starter in Round 2. If Jenkins is that guy, then Joe hopes the Bucs get him. At most, moving up within the round would cost them their fourth-round pick and a swap of Round 2 picks.

he’s my favorite inside olineman…..he should be there in round 2…..if not, tytus howard or chuma odoga in the 3rd round or 4th round would do….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!!

  2. Kord Says:

Hoping we grab Thornhill with this pick but if this happened I wouldn’t be mad. Gotta grab Minshew day 3

  3. Mitch Says:

This young man reminds of Davin Joseph, honestly.

Day the Tampa bay Bucs passed on HOF Josh Allen”

    I am with you Joe.
I would love to see the Bucs draft a DLineman in the first, but the Bucs have apparently telegraphed to everyone they are picking Devin White. I hope he ends up being a great player for the Bucs, but I think the fact that everyone knows whom the Bucs are picking reflects very poorly on the management of the Bucs.
We should have educated guesses, but that should be it.

  6. MadMax Says:

Too bad Bradbury wont be there for us in the 2nd….but Jenkins would be nice.

  7. Mitch Says:

Kobe – why do you believe that Josh Allen is a future hall of famer?

  8. Defense Rules Says:

I’ll be happy as long as the Bucs walk away from Rnds 1-4 with a MLB, DLineman, OLineman & RB who can all contribute big-time this year. Rnds 5-7 are developmental, if they stick.

  9. Destinjohnny Says:

It’s shocking how much we pay ryan
How does Jason have a job?

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Josh Allen- Power and speed

    only few have both

only Mack and Darnold has both

all the rest is either speed or power

15 sacks will be an average year for Allen

Kobe has not been more confident in any evaluation of any any player”

I do think it will be a terrible mistake if the Bucs don’t pick either Ed Oliver or Josh Allen if one or both are there when the Bucs pick.
Of course I thought it was a terrible mistake when the Bucs passed on Derwin James last year too.

  13. Guzziep Says:

Wausa….the Bucs record the last decade plus, heck mostly their whole existence reflects how poorly the Bucs are managed

So Spence was considered by many OSU people to be better than Bosa when they were freshman. He was considered can’t miss by the Jags during that combined practice his rookie year. He put up 5.5 sacks as a rookie and had a horrible shoulder and fundamentally playing out of position for his body type and skill set. There is no reason (other than his shoulder which has had time to heal) that he shouldn’t truly blossom with Bowles D.

And so I question what Allen brings to the program that we don’t already have in Spence? Spence never got to prove himself at OSU and so his numbers at EKU are discounted. I get that. I’m not saying that Spence has as much potential as Allen but I’m not sure the difference is that much. IE we have that player!

Meanwhile DE’s get more sacks than LB’s but not because as Fennelly tried to say this morning because they are closer to the QB to begin with. They also have to beat tackles, TE’s and chipping RB’s. But they get the vast majority of opportunities where LB’s do not. But when they do get the chance LB’s can be very effective at rushing the passer. See LVD’s seven sack season when someone gave him a chance to rush.

The object is to put pressure on the passer. White and LVD in Bowles defense should be able to easily get ten sacks between them. And of course LB’s may not get the same amount of opportunity as DE’s but they frighten OC’s because nobody knows where or when they are coming after the QB.

White has the personality…the incredible physical gifts and not just straight line speed…his cone drill was also terrific. Give him a crack in the opposing OL blocking scheme and he and LVD will be on the QB before an RB can even chip.

After hearing BA saying never draft for need and go for the best player I do not want Allen…I’d prefer White although clearly if Quinnen somehow slips that changes the equation. I think White is clearly a better player than Allen but not Q.

    True @Guzziep. Sad, but true.

  16. firethecannons Says:

I’m on board with Kobe get Allen at 5 or trade down and get White

  17. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Of course Devin White is worthy of the # 5 pick…BUT the Bucs needs to address the OL & DL in a serious manner…IMO I’d bite the bullet and go OL-DL with the 1st 4 picks…hopefully 2 of each…hopefully 2 QB’s go before the 5th pick..only Jason could screw that up

  18. RawDog Says:

Would be a good addition, but I don’t understand the obsession with trading up in any round. The Bucs need the picks they have.

  19. TOM Says:

If anything trade down not up. DL is where the Bucs need to go. Williams or Oliver. Zach Allen in 2nd. OL or LB in third. Then CB, RB.

  20. Anonymous Says:

What’s your infatuation with trading up? Especially for a center/guard? SMH.

  21. Jeff Says:

No brainer. 1st 3 rounds of the Draft should focus on pass rushers and o-lineman. This dude would be perfect in the 2nd round.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

A simple question for those who wish to spend four picks on OL and DL…Seriously…WHO are our LB’s after LVD. Are you counting Spence perhaps? When folks say DL are they talking simply edge rushers or DT’s as well?

  23. stpetebucsfan Says:

BTW…According to the draft “experts” this draft is loaded with DL but only two LB’s project to be even worth of a pick in the top 4 rounds. It’s a draft that is DL loaded and LB poor. Just some perspective.

  24. rrsrq Says:

This is a guy Q. Williams even struggled against. Don’t give up a pick though, throw in GMC to move up.

  25. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I’ve been watching this kid manhandle dudes in the SEC for a while now.

His game and physical make-up are reminiscent of young LeCharles Bentley.

IMO Elgton Jenkins is the best interior prospect in this draft.

    So go get’em

    #TrenchWarFare2019

  26. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Trade down and use the additional draft capital to pick-up, the following prospects in the 2nd round.

    -Elgton Jenkins C/G
    -Chase Winovich DE/OLB

Note: Sure I would LUV for Jeffery Simmons to be on the board.
But there’s no way Simmons makes it out of the 1st round.

  27. rrsrq Says:

    @ SPBF,

    I am with you 💯

  28. Lord Cornelius Says:

Ever since LUV endorsed him a while ago I’ve been all in on him or Lindstrom in R2 if available.

If all those guys are gone; along with other top interior (Eric McCoy maybe / Michael Dieter) then wait till R3 and use R2 on defense again.

  29. Lord Cornelius Says:

also lmao @ my last mock on first-pick trading down once in 1st and again in the 2nd

    R1-Ed Oliver DT
    R2A- Chris Lindstrom OG
    R2B – Darnell Savage S
    R2C – Chase Winovich DE/OLB
    R3A – Miles Sanders RB
    R3B – Tytus Howard OT
    R3C – Lonnie Johnson CB
    R4 – Mecole Hardman WR
    R5 – Bobby Okereke ILB
    R6 – Blace Brown CB
    R7 – Jonathon Ledbetter

We’d definitely need to free up some cap space in this freak show trade down haul lol.

  30. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    LC

    Thanks for recognition bredren.

    Respect

  31. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    LC

    Good work

  32. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Though he needs to hit the gym

Chase Winovich reminds of Ryan Kerrigan

  33. Jackwagon Says:

Everyone knows Lindstrom is going in the first round like Bradbury will too.

Rather roll with Dalton Risner outta K State for sure, over this Jenkins kid who is decent yes. Risner still very well go in the bottom of the first, after Lindstrom gets snatched up.

Risner is a bit meaner, blew out the Senior Bowl, more compact, solid stud at RG plug and play…if there and available in the 2nd round.

  34. Alanbucsfan Says:

Everyone talks about the great D on the 2002 Bucs Super Bowl team.

In 2000 , Bucs drafted Cosey Coleman (G) in 2nd round
In 2001 Bucs drafted Kenyatta Walker (T) in 1st round.

2002 Bucs playoffs – only 1 sack given up.

Yes, DLine and Linebackers are need, but OLine must be addressed in early rounds.

  35. Darin Says:

I agree Kobe. Which is why I dont see him lasting until 5. If he does theres no way they pass. He is a perfect fit in Bowles D. Guy will go off. Im hoping he is there at 5.
