“We’re Going To Win A Lot Of Football Games”
April 9th, 2019America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, held his first official news conference of the 2019 fiscal football season this afternoon at One Buc Palace.
It was a good one.
Joe had plenty of questions, including asking Jameis what his message is to Bucs faithful about himself and the team.
“My message to the fans is just, hey, get excited. Get behind us,” Jameis said. “We’re going to win a lot of football games. I know y’all hear that every year, but this year we’re going to show you. So I don’t got to say much.”
The vocal optimism when it comes to the standings is refreshing and it reflects Bucco Bruce Arians emphasizing winning a ring at all costs. Joe wasn’t in the room for Arians’ opening-day speech to the team, obviously, but Arians has said that’s his standard key point along with his core beliefs: trust, loyalty and respect — with a side of accountability.
The we’ll-show-you message from Jameis underscores his situation. He has to prove he can be a consistent quarterback, otherwise its hard to imagine Team Glazer coughing up at least Kirk Cousins money to keep him from hitting the market.

i believe we will win a lot of football games…..they managed to win 5 with no coaching and development…..i can only imagine what they can do with competent coaching and development…..

@1bucsfan
Me too man I can’t help it lol. Born in 87 and been a fan my whole life. I always find a way to be delusionally optimistic.
However I was mostly pumped for 2017 more than any season recently. Coming off good defensive stretch and with the added weapons we really seemed poised to take the next step. Too bad the 5 game stretch of defensive play was a fluke.
Fast forward to 2017 and the defense was bottom 3 in all categories basically, the run game was bottom 3, the kicking sitaution was bottom 3, and Winston got hurt early in the season.
Even so – we were a few defensive stops + 1 made kick away from a 9-7 record. Non hurt Winston + average to slighty above average defense = 11-12 win team that season and a contendor.
For 2019 I’m excited in a “wait and see” kind of way. I’m mostly curious to see how a lot of derensive players look under a new staff.
Maybe Licht really just drafted 5-6 terribel secondary players with high to mid round picks. I doubt that tho

this is the year Winston will be a thought of as a failure or an average to above qb(but never ever America’s qb)…keep hope alive he turns it around.

cancer93, lvd and d smith were all rewarded for far worse play than winston has demonstrated…. glazers love paying career losers…

@T REX
Fool me once shame on you, fool me 5 times shame on me.
Bruce Arians fooled you how? You think patriots players are out there just winning Super Bowls on the strength of the players and having that head coach doesn’t matter? Guess you think if Dirk Koetter was the coach they’d have just as many trophies!!!! The coach matters which is why we haven’t won since before or after gruden and Dungy.
You kinda make yourself look stupid basically because you’ve been nothing but negative and if they lose we’ll only say they need another year or more players but if they win you have to keep being negative because everyone one will be calling you the bandwagon fan who tried to switched up after complaining all off-season.
April 9th, 2019 at 5:28 pm
“Delusionally optimistic”…………………..sounds about right.
“45 TDs………….you do know he hasn’t cracked 20 his last two years, right?”
tickrdr
April 9th, 2019 at 5:31 pm
Jameis don’t talk about it, be about it
Sick of the talk every year just go out and win
April 9th, 2019 at 5:35 pm
Yes Jamies we do hear this every year. And you haven’t held up your end of the bargain dude.
QB play has been atrocious here in Tampa. Years ago we saw solid football…….believe it or not some of us Buc fans actually know what it looks like. You ain’t had it.
Enough with the blooper reel plays………One thing you gotta know about Tampa Bay(I’m sure you already do) is we got a lot of yankees surrounding us every day. You guys f***ing embarrass us in front of our peers………….Some of us get bitter about it.
I don’t appreciate going to work and the first guy I have to see is a goofy Steelers fan wearing a big smile cause my team was a laughing disgrace……Or a Giants fan…….Or a Panther fan laughing at how stupid my QB played……….I don’t freaking appreciate this s**t.
But I will still be here supporting you….But enough is enough. It’s time to perform or shut up……..I’m certain half a decade is patient enough.
GO BUCS!!!!!!

April 9th, 2019 at 6:19 pm
@Lord C … “Too bad the 5 game stretch of defensive play was a fluke.” Oh Lord C, not you too. There are no such things as 5-game win streaks in the NFL (maybe a 1-game win streak but not 5 games). Starting with the Bears game, the Bucs defense only gave up 17 PPG average in the 2nd half of the 2016 season. And we did it against some VERY good teams (to include wins against the Bears, Chiefs, Seahawks, Chargers, Saints, Cowboys & Panthers). Personally I think the key reason was that the Bucs had relatively few injuries to our starters that year. The POINTS ALLOWED in 2016 (369 PA) weren’t dramatically different from 2017 (382 PA), but our rushing defense was a LOT worse in 2017 (look at the difference in starters between 2016 & 2017 … big difference).
@Kobe … “JW gets 45 tds and 5k yards …easily”. Kobe, someone apparently hacked into your account again (surely you didn’t write that). In NFL history, QBs have thrown for 5,000 yards ONLY 11 times (2 of those in 2018 BTW by Mahomes & Roethlisberger). The ONLY QB to do it more than once was Drew Brees … and he’s done it FIVE times. Jameis would be in excellent company IF he did it though: Marino, Brees, Brady, Stafford, Peyton Manning, Roethlisberger & Mahomes.
Joe … JBF really does need some new pictures of Jameis, although that one above shows something I’ve never noticed before: Jameis wearing a visor. Interesting.

JimmyJack
but you are ok with those same people making fun of you after cancer93 blows a lead, dances on the sideline down double digits or completely comes out flat prior to a big game… so Winston gets held to a different standard. got it….
April 9th, 2019 at 6:21 pm
Lord C … Forgot the word ‘fluke’ after ‘5-game win streaks’. My bad. (I type fast but sometimes my mind doesn’t keep up).
April 9th, 2019 at 6:28 pm
@ lord C agreed bro I thought thee exact same thing lol

@DR
Trust me all the reasoning you’re giving is the same I had for optimism for the defense going into 2017 and why I was so excited… We had beaten good teams and shut down good offenses that needed to win those games. I didn’t think we’d be a top 5-10 defense but I thought we could be at least top 16 considering we drafted/added to the same unit from 2016. A top 16 defense that year = likely playoff team.
We were 24th or so in scoring but we were bottom 1-3 realistically when isolating everything on a per-drive basis/any specific categories like 3rd down / completion % / etc that are specific to the defense and not impacted by the offense.
I don’t know what the word is for it – but that end of the season stretch looks like an anomaly compared to the other games Mike Smith ran the defense (beginning of 2016 / all of 2017 / beginning of 2018). Not only that – but similar to Lovie Smith – his unit was regressing not improving and that was with high investments in young players to where we should see the opposite. Individually no one improved year over year pretty much which is kind of a crazy indictment alone.
Meanwhile we can at least point to a lot of the offensive players developing/improving/taking big strides year over year. That IMO is why Monken & Koetter at least have coordinator jobs while basically no one from our defensive staff does
April 9th, 2019 at 7:16 pm
Yeah, I remember calling into Greg Schiano’s show once and getting on him about a terrible home record…I think we’d lost like 10 in a row at home at that point. TWICE during his show he said “We are going to win plenty of football games.”
All talk, Winston. Perform, or hit the road for good….please.
April 9th, 2019 at 7:16 pm
Not there yet…must mean there=smart. I’m talking about Winston. Smdh.
April 9th, 2019 at 7:23 pm
To be honest, each coach has come in with some buzz phrase, some philosophy, or set of principles. All coaches do. What Arians says is nothing new…and trust, respect, loyalty and accountability are all things Winston flushed down the toilet. So yes, show us Winston, but it’s not something he is going to demonsrate in one season. He is already way in the read/negative on all four qualities because of his Uber disgust. He is going to have to play lights out AND demonstrate all of those qualities off the field…however, were I parent with school kids and knew Jameis was going to my kid’s school, I’d keep the kid home and complain to the Bucs for having such a lack of judgement to put that creep back around kids, or any female. So he’s got a tough uphill climb with many fans.
April 9th, 2019 at 7:32 pm
We are going to? Ok Jameis, I’m all in. But I’ve heard this sermon repeatedly for the last few Buc Yrs. We..shall see as we..watch.
April 9th, 2019 at 7:41 pm
5 games without coaching, in game adjustments, bad clock managment, worst defemse ever, missed field goals horrendously bad special teams. A world.class.punt return specialitst sitting on the bench while humph and rodgers return punts.
But yeah….it was talent. Idiots
April 9th, 2019 at 8:02 pm
I’m a believer in Jamies
Hopefully Coach arians can get the Bucs a competent running game and the defense and special teams to average.
If he does that the Bucs will have a very good year.
April 9th, 2019 at 8:36 pm
DR,
I believe lC is correct . Fluke basically sums up that 5 game stretch. Turnovers is the fluke part. During that stretch, the Defense created multiple turnovers and that anomaly hasn’t been repeated since.
April 9th, 2019 at 8:42 pm
Jameis with a real coach an a OC who’s played in the NFL big year y’all just Watch GoBucs
April 9th, 2019 at 9:23 pm
@BucEmUp … “But yeah….it was talent. Idiots.” (he said sarcastically). There you go again BucEmUp, still calling everyone else idiots. Try a little research for just a few minutes …
Bears beat the Bucs last year 48-10. Was it coaching or talent or both that led to that loss? Bears finished the season with a 12-4 record, largely because of a kick-ass defense that was rated #1 in the NFL for POINTS ALLOWED. I ask again, was that loss because of coaching or talent or both? Their DC is Vic Fangio, long-time DC who’s been fired by the Panthers, Colts, Texans & 49ers prior to his 4-years with the Bears. But look at what Chicago gave him to work with (here’s the research part … go to https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/chi/2018_roster.htm). What you should notice is that Chicago’s defensive starters included FIVE 1st Rnd picks, SIX picks from Rnds 2-6. IOW BucEmUp, an experienced DC (Fangio) had some exceptionally talented players to work with … it was BOTH that resulted in the Bears defense only giving up 283 points. That same defense got 27 INTs and recovered 20 fumbles & even managed to score 5 TDs in the process.
Want to compare the ‘talented’ Bucs 2018 defensive roster to the Bears 2018 defense?
Our defense gave up 382 points, only got 9 INTs but did recover 21 fumbles but didn’t manage to score any TDs.
Or how about Games Lost to Injuries? think that might’ve impacted the different results? (Hint: Bucs lost 270, while the Bears only lost 124 to injuries).
But hey, remember, that 48-10 drubbing was ALL on coaching. Ya right. (And BTW, Fangio has had some REALLY bad years with those other teams … last year with the Panthers his defense gave up 413 pts; last year with the Colts his defense gave up 486 pts, last year with the Texans his defense gave up 431 points … similar performances to what Mike Smith did here in 2018). And yet, with much better TALENT, that same coach had the #1 defense in the NFL last year. Whodathunkit!
April 9th, 2019 at 9:46 pm
So Buc fans think a coach who was retired is gonna magically fix Jameis, the right side of the o line, the run game, the kicking game the defense and a GM who can’t properly evaluate his roster and draft players?
Yeah, not gonna happen especially with a inexperienced offensive play caller and a bunch of players with a losing mentality
