Disruptive Ed Oliver

Freak.
Houston manbeast defensive tackle Ed Oliver, to Joe, has major upside.
That’s a strange thing to say about a guy who could be a No. 5 pick if Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht drafts him there later this month. But a lot of knowledgeable people out there believe Houston coach Major Applewhite misused Oliver the past two seasons when Applewhite took over for Tom Herman after he bolted to Texas.
One guy totally geeking over Oliver is Friend of Joe analyst Peter Schrager of NFL Network. In the video below, Schrager is all in on Oliver and states in no uncertain terms he would take Oliver over this Quinnen Williams if he needed a defensive tackle.
Joe isn’t sure what would make some Bucs fans happier: Oliver falling to the Bucs or this Williams.

Kobe, I read and just laugh at a lot if your comments….. But your top three has some similarities to mine.
1)Oliver 2)Bush 3)Taylor. Wouldn’t be upset with Q, White or Allen, though. I would be happy with any of them at 5, but a trade down scenario where one , or a few, of them are still there would be ideal. It’s gonna be really hard for the first couple rounds to be botched, based on projected abilities, of course

Stay with me now because I’m connecting dots which may mean nothing. DC Todd Bowles traveled to Houston for Oliver’s pro day and had a chance to see Oliver workout with fellow Cougar Nick Thurman. On April 3rd, the Bucs had manbeast DT Ed Oliver in for a private visit. And on April 4th, the Bucs signed DT Nick “The Thurmanator” Thurman who started next to Oliver for 3 years to a 1yr contract. You know where to see his highlights playing next to Oliver.
The 6-4, 293-pound Thurman played four seasons for the Houston Cougars, appearing in 34 games and recording 93 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 16 tackles for loss, four passes defensed, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. As a senior in 2017 he set a career high with 32 stops and tallied 2.0 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss.
I think Oliver is the preferred pick in the first round. What I don’t know is whether that is at #5 or as Luke Easterling thinks in DraftWire, the Bucs trade down with the Bengals, get Oliver at #11 and pick up another 2nd and 3rd round pick. Wouldn’t that be nice? OG Chris Lindstrom or DE/OLB Jaylon Ferguson in the 2nd – A guy could dream. Lol.
Who knows with so many good choices available to take? But I wouldn’t be unhappy if Oliver is the choice. Go Bucs!

4) Brian Burns
5) Josh Allen
6) Devin White
All can be difference makers in 1 way or another.

Im ok with Oliver, just not at 5. Ive watched all utube has out there on him…..LOVE his interviews….AWESOME kid! But….
He was touted #1 coming out of high school…did he let that get to his head and take some off in college games? And yeah, maybe he was misused at times….but I dont know, just not feeling him at 5. 10-15 in a trade back if Q, Allen, or White is gone.

So most of the time Devin Bush’s tackling and his ability to cover were crazy good. It was just that Ohio State game. He was clearly physically over matched by their size and strength. Size might make a difference. If Bowles got Bucannon to work, maybe he can get Bush and his small stature to work. He has
the best cover ability of any linebacker this year. If somehow we trade down and get him. I like him covering and tackling Kamara and McCaffery. Or at least in my hopeful Buccaneers dream cycle.

I think I would pick him ahead of any other player in the draft with the exception of Bosa.
It would not surprise me if the Raiders select Oliver ahead of the Bucs.

I highly doubt Oliver makes it to the tenth pick.
Guy has freak speed and strength for his size.

Speed and strength yes, skills yes….heart and determination?
Thats why guys fall like Hump did…an undrafted, now a multi millionaire….its not rocket science to see heart and determination play after play combined with some skill….Oliver has a little bit but shouldve stepped his game up for me to consider him a top 10. Is he a shoulda-woulda-coulda, or pass? When we all look back on this in 3-5 years, we’ll see…but it’ll will be interesting for me to follow.

Everyone’s aware that Quinnen is also visiting the Bucs right. And closer to draft day mind you. Is that a “dot”? Who’s to say?. But it could be just as much of a dot as Oliver’s.
And the Nick Thurman thing? Like a couple others like Lord Corn mentioned earlier, Thurman will be lucky to crack the final 53 man roster. Those..things being connected, hmm.
It would be so like Gruden to get fixated on something, and maybe take Oliver, though they have invested alot in past 2 years at DT.
Quinnen Allday Williams. If Bowles/BA hopefully force it into existence.

Joe you’re leading the masses astray. “Manbeast defensive tackle Ed Oliver, to Joe, has major upside”? Really? He’s a DE not a DT, and we NEED a DT to replace GMC. Oliver played last year at 275-282 lbs for Houston (heaviest he’s played at & IMO had meh results … 54 tackles, 3 sacks … Whooppee). Walter Football says “Oliver does not have great strength, as he can struggle with mass and double teams”. Great git-off admittedly, but that was against college linemen. I don’t see him as having “major upside”.
Bucs are hurting right now in several starting spots on defense, especially LB & CB (throw in DT IF GMC departs). Quinnen Williams has ‘major upside’. Ed Oliver is a wannabee. I wouldn’t be disappointed at all with Bucs picking Williams at #5, but I still prefer Devin White. He’ll make the biggest impact for a rookie this year & in following years.
And BTW, folks conveniently forget that the Bucs rushing defense absolutely sucked last year. We were #24 in rushing yardage allowed and #29 in rushing TDs allowed. Bucs had ONE game where we scored more than 40 Points, and we won (although the defense gave up 40 Points in that game, we held the Saints to 43 yards rushing). Bucs had THREE games where we scored more than 30 Points, and we LOST all 3 (our defense gave up an average of 137 rushing YPG for those 3 games). Our inability to stop the run killed us in those games (as did the 3 turnovers per game that our offense averaged).

All this trade back to take Oliver is nonsense.
He was very much underrated on media big boards before his pro day but they are catching up now. Jeremiah has him 4th overall on his latest board, a lot of other media is singing the same tune.
I’ve formally believed it’s a top 4 for a long time. Boss, Q, Oliver, and Allen. If one is there at 5 you select them and don’t turn back. He’s absolutely in the same class as those other 3 and big boards will continue to dictate it in the final few weeks. Thank god panthers hit that last field goal on week 17.
