Team Glazer Talks Dirk Koetter

How will history look back at the Dirk Koetter regime? That’s unclear, but it will be a lot clearer in eight months.
We already know general manager Jason Licht appreciates Koetter for helping build one of the greatest offenses in the history of professional football. Yes, that’s how Licht evaluated the 2018 offense.
In the world of the Bucs, head coaches get fired and ownership doesn’t have much to say about it. They move on to what’s really important — what’s next.
But Joe thinks it is important, as well as entertaining and enlightening, to look back. What lessons were learned? What worked and what didn’t? And heck, fans invest mountains of time and money learning about head coaches and bonding with them, Joe thinks fans deserve a proper goodbye after the breakup. It’s reasonable. It’s human.
Back at the NFL Owners Meetings last week in Phoenix, Joe asked Team Glazer to reflect on the Koetter regime. And thankfully, Team Glazer didn’t drop the ol’ Warren Sapp line, “next question.”
JoeBucsFan.com: I know you don’t want to look back, but with every regime, coach/GM whatever, there’s a lesson or something you take away that might have been a learning experience, something you bring forward. The last regime, is there something that learned from that totality of Dirk Koetter’s time that you bring forward?
Buccaneers Co-chairman Joel Glazer: I like to focus on the positives. And while things didn’t work out the way Dirk would have wanted or we would have wanted. Dirk was a quality individual. He was a pleasure to work with. And I know one thing, when you work with good people, you hate to have to make a change. And Dirk was a good person.
So what did Bucs officials really learn from Koetter’s time?
Hopefully, they at least learned that loyalty to washed out assistant coaches and players who don’t want to be here, in addition to second-rate players, is a fast way to bury a team.

And Team Glazer finished by saying, “We also learned that it might not be such a good idea to fire a coach with multiple years remaining on their contract, essentially paying a coach not to coach. But, then again, who are we kidding? We just have this burning desire to share Team Glazer loot. It makes us feel less guilty about firing ‘good people’ like Dirk.” Yes, Mr. Glazer gestured with the dreaded air quotes around “good people”.

Why should LIcht get any kind of pass on the players he put on his losing team??He was in charge!!! Atlanta couldn’t wait to get Dirk back .

Well, the proof will be in the pudding but I’m a little frustrated that so far all I see with Arians is the same good ole boy coaching club. I hope these guys will be successful at putting a fresh spin on their previous schemes with these players. It’ll be a shame if this is just Lovie, Koetter… 3.0. Its early, I’ll try not to be so pessimistic.

Koetter is probably a better OC than that guy the Falcons brought in to replace Shanahan. Koetter is not HC material. That’s why he gone!

Man please the judgment is already out on Koetter but media is just to coward to be real about coaches like they are players. Dude was trash and we knew that two years ago so we don’t have to wait for next season to start we already know he’s not in the Bruce Arians class of coaching.
Dude is getting way too much credit. Someone tell me what offensive minded coach wouldn’t have a top ten offense with mike Evans, desean Jackson, Godwin, oj Howard and cam Brate? They would have made Blake bottles look good. The bigger issue was failing to build the run game which is something you must do and based on that should have known this team wouldn’t sniff the playoffs

Meh Dirk was and is a great offensive coordinator. He’s also a good guy and very smart. I liked him and know he’ll be successful in Atlanta.
But he’s not a good head coach. He hated the drama. He got way too stressed out. Too sarcastic at times it wasn’t warranted. It’s quite obvious the difference in personalities he has with Bruce. Bruce is a leader and will stomp out drama in a heartbeat and has the maturity to discuss it afterwards.
Again I like Dirk and he’ll do well but he was in over his head.

In Charlotte week 17 the last game of the season before the became head coach I said to him “let’s give the Panthers their first loss!”. He said, “I wouldn’t get too excited”.
I appreciate brutal honesty but that is not intelligent to say in front of impressionable men as a professional himself.

Towards the end it just seemed like Licht and koetter couldn’t mesh at all. Does anybody remember their little exchange in the war room after that Ronald Jones pick? Koetter pretty much gave him the cold shoulder. It was very weird.

What they should have learned is that they have no clue how to run a sports franchise, and it’s a travesty that idiot sons like the Glazers get to decide an entire town’s football future, just because Daddy had lotsa money.

Interesting that you brought that up. DK used that principle with a player who the management wished to keep and He did not. Interesting in the fact that no one, not a single poster, understood what DK was doing at the time and two years later, everyone points to the situation that instigated it as a sign of DK’S being hard headed.

Just like in Atlanta , Dirk failed from not having a defense. Once he saw it wasny improving his playcalling went vanilla and conservative ( the games he didnt let Monken call HIS plays) Dirk would havr been fine had he not kept some stupid promise to bring smitty with him. Oh well it was all for the best because now they have the best staff since the glory days.

Buc em up is right. The major (among many) mistake by Dirk was his allegiance to Smitty. Anytime a D finishes 32nd someone has to be held accountable and Smitty was not until the Glazers finally stepped in. Throw in idiotic personnel decisions like Doug Martin in 2017 and you have a 10 dash 22 run over 2 seasons…m. The Glazers also deserve beaucoup blsme as they could have intervened much earlier on many of these issues but they simply allowed the train wreck to happen and that is something that a good owner should have never allowed even if they might have been secretly competing with baby Davis for the services of Chuckie and then had to drop out and let Dirk have one more year. Why they did not make Koetter and Licht fire or “reassign” Mikey is a question that we will probably never get answered. The lesson learned is that loyalty to washed out coaches and players will get your team competing with the Jets and Giants for high draft picks….

Well we do have some nice pieces & with a hell of a defensive draft I’m hoping our corners step it up , our QB has his best season & we need to draft a running back ” Henderson ” from Memphis to help out P.B ….how about our draft turns out to be like ’95…OJ Howard plays a full 16 + games and some new fa additions ball out for a big contract..if guys like this on our roster tap into thier full talent I know for a fact coach BA knows how to use it & we can do good things in the NFC…we really need the defence to step it up big time and to have jameis finally feel like he doesn’t have to press anything..all his job will need to be is play a facilitator and take free shots when Bruce says GO ! That would be so nice for a change but In order for that to happen we will need # 1 , our Meathead gm will need to fully listen to his coaches ! # 2 , our line needs to block like thier hair is on fire for our run game as I’m not to worried about pass blocking as long as that stupid rt from last year is a backup..# 3 , play man press and I do not ever want to see friggen a defence like Mike Smith’s AGAIN ! # 4 , pound the gull darn rock with P.B until a guy like Henderson becomes so good you can not take him off the field ..we are in need of some serious tweaking to this team and they know it ! But guys , they are finally now starting to head in the right damn direction…this draft will say a lot and so will the first couple weeks into the season because if we can stay just above 500 going into December , I have a feeling we will finish strong ! It’s a marathon , not a Sprint ! Go bucs

I was a big Dirk fan. Wanted it to work out so bad cause he seemed like a great guy and had the temperament I wanted our coach to have. It didn’t work out though and his methods proved to be unsuccessful. His biggest downfall was trusting mike smith too much and continuously saying he didn’t need to have anything to do with the defense. A head coach can’t be solely focused on one side of the ball.
