“Soft Rebooting”
April 3rd, 2019Per one informative and very entertaining NFL observer, the lack of player movement with the Bucs this offseason suggests the Bucs are not undergoing a full-blown housecleaning, which is what often happens with a coaching change.
Rather, Mike Tanier of Bleacher Report sees danger in the horizon coming from the skies of South Florida that should give Bucs fans the shivers.
Free Agency Summaries:#Buccaneers: Soft rebooting with a QB-guru coach and a QB that keeps disappointing in a variety of ways. This is where the Dolphins were in 2016.
— Mike Tanier, The Zen Archer (@MikeTanier) April 2, 2019
Of course, Tanier is referring to Adam Gase, who was considered a quarterback guru in many NFL circles (he made Jay Cutler tolerable in Chicago) but wide-eyed Gase could not solve the riddle of Ryan Tannehill, who eventually brought the entire Dolphins franchise to its knees before both he and Gase were thrown into Biscayne Bay.
Before all of us begin jumping off the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, notice that in Gase’s first year Tannehill won eight games before he was hurt and the Dolphins limped to a 10-win season and a playoff berth with Matt Moore at quarterback.
Right now, Joe’s going to guess Bucs fans would do cartwheels down Gulf-to-Bay Blvd. if the Bucs could win 10 games in Bucco Bruce Arians’ first year.
Is Tanier suggesting the Bucs will have a sugar rush in Arians’ first year followed by the Bucs reverting to their normal losing selves and Arians and America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, will sail off into the Gulf of Mexico sunset?

It’s just entertainment and doesn’t mean what he said makes sense. Even the harshest Winston critics have to admit its a stretch to compare Adam game who’s a really good coordinator to BA and RT to Winston but nice try

Wait till the sheep “realize” that repair is more expensive, and still filled with mistakes and errors, or They could go new, and it will cost not even 1/4 of the price and be faster and more accurate!!!!!!!!
2019 season will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Free the Realist joe!!!!!!! Do no moderate the “Truth”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!
And GO IRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

April 3rd, 2019 at 12:17 pm
I think it was smart not to blow this thing up just yet. Winston is in a contract year and blowing this thing up around him doesn’t really give as a lot to work with as far as evaluations go. If Winston stinks it up next year Licht, Winston and many others will be gone. Most of our heavy contracts can be released next season without cap penalty so we could be looking at a whole new roster if things don’t work out.
Personally, I think we will be fine BA is a much better coach than Gase. This will be some of the best coaching Winston has gotten in the pro’s or otherwise. Defensively there isn’t a single person I know that would defend Mike Smith or his staff. Releasing them alone was addition by subtraction.
April 3rd, 2019 at 12:18 pm
**I guess I should now be saying this year.
April 3rd, 2019 at 12:21 pm
It’s well known Tanier has always hated Winston
April 3rd, 2019 at 12:27 pm
Sorry, but I stopped reading when he compared a two-time coach of the year to Adam “Marty Feldman” Gase… Will take BA’s wisdom and influence on the entire team (which is what the final record will be determined by) over Gase’s 8 days a week.
April 3rd, 2019 at 12:28 pm
Ryan tannehill has a 42-46 record. Almost 50/50. I don’t think anyone should trash him and say our qb situation has been much better or different to date. Especially when tannehill hasn’t had Much Help on offense.
Miami hasn’t been really a juggernaut at any one position. Defense – eh. OLine – eh . Running game – good at times. Receivers – eh.
You could at least say our receivers and tight ends combined were in discussion of being best in nfl
April 3rd, 2019 at 12:29 pm
A QB guru who’s not calling plays or coaching QB’s
Arians is still retired he’s delegating too much for his influences to be felt
6-10 here we come
April 3rd, 2019 at 12:30 pm
imo, gase failed because ryan couldnt stay healthy…..along with vance joseph heading to denver….
#REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!
April 3rd, 2019 at 12:32 pm
Who are we kidding….
EVERYONE sucks at Bleacher Report. That’s funny.
April 3rd, 2019 at 12:41 pm
Well I like Kipers 2 round mock.
1st round Devin White
2nd round Jeffrey Simmons.
Then everybody can be happy.

Tannehil’s health did really kill him. Looked pretty solid / showing growth I thought early.
The biggest difference for me is that Tannehill gets to face the Bills / Jets 4 games a year while Winston has played in the best QB division in football and typically faced top 5 SOS while the AFC East almost guarentees a top 5 easy schedule.
Also Miami’s point give up rankings in Tanny’s first 4 years;
1-7th
2-8th
3-20th
4-19th
Jameis’ defenses rankings in ppg given up:
1-26th
2-15th (winning season)
3-24th
4-31st
Tannehil only had 7 and 8 wins with top 8 scoring defenses. We probably are a strong playoff team if our defense was ever that good in 2017/2018
April 3rd, 2019 at 12:49 pm
So basically our defense on average with Winston has been bottom 1/3 at best if not bottom 5 especially once you break it down to the per-drive metrics.
But yeah QB is the problem. Not a consistently bottom 3-5 defense. Winston is WHY the defense is bottom 3-5 somehow too even thought that was the case in all the losing before he came.

Joe r u not part of the app tampa bay bucs news anymore? I’ve notice none of ur articles have been on there since the last day of March
April 3rd, 2019 at 12:59 pm
Joe has never worked for Buccaneers.com.
April 3rd, 2019 at 12:59 pm
From ProFootballReference.com: first four years in the league.
Ryan Tannehill and Jameis Winston:
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=1&player_id1_hint=Jameis+Winston&player_id1_select=Jameis+Winston&fromyear_1=2015&toyear_1=2018&player_id1=WinsJa00&idx=players&player_id2_hint=Ryan+Tannehill&player_id2_select=Ryan+Tannehill&fromyear_2=2012&toyear_2=2015&player_id2=TannRy00&idx=players#totals::none
Their stats seem pretty similar to me except for the sack totals:
Tannehill: 184
Winston: 122
tickrdr

I realize it’s hard to defend JW’s indefensible record. We can blame all the ancillary reasons and Lord C makes an excellent point about play in the AFC East…NE and then a bunch of creampuffs.
But the major difference between JW and other QB’s is his upside. When he’s good he’s great…sadly when he sucks we see games like last years Bengals effort. JW clearly has talent. It comes down to one final thing that we’ll learn this season. Can BA coach some consistency into him. If so..we are on our way!!!
April 3rd, 2019 at 1:24 pm
No qb has turned it over more in the last 4 years than Jameis and throw in Fitz and you will never see a 4 years period of more turnovers. Not sure what Lord would need to see to think there might be a qb problem. Sure, Miami had a better D thats why they are around 8-8 every year, while the bucs win 4 or 5.
April 3rd, 2019 at 1:51 pm
Arians > Gase
Winston > Tannehill
April 3rd, 2019 at 2:00 pm
Since 2005, Bucs are 1-3 against Jets, 2-2 against Bills and 0-4 against Patriots
They would have stunk it up regardless of what division they were in.
April 3rd, 2019 at 2:05 pm
Joe-
The reason there’s not a player house cleaning is because Licht and Arians are on same page and this has been Licht’s roster and now it’s Licht’s coach.
We shall see if results validate Licht’s picks.
April 3rd, 2019 at 2:40 pm
@alanbucs… another reason is he is going to coach 2 or 3 more years and then he is done. Not much time for a full rebuild.
April 3rd, 2019 at 2:55 pm
2005 is like 50 years ago in NFL terms lol.
Jameis WInston vs those teams:
BIlls: 32/44 384 yards 3 TDs 1 INT. Gave the Bucs the lead late in the 4th despite the defense sucking a4ss all game and they still choked it away. [Four plays, 75-yards Tyrod Taylor — Joe]
Pats: 26/46 334 yards 1 TD and put the team in position to win but kicker choked hardcore with 3 missed make-able FGs that basically determined the game. Still almost won. [Rookie tight end ran the wrong route on final play that was open had the correct route been used. — Joe]
So yeah you’re right we probably lose anyway but due to our sh1t bottom 3 defense and worst kicking situation in the NFL…. not bad QB play
So imagine Winston in that division with a top 8 defense instead of a bottom 3 defense. Miami would have been a 10-12 win team easy vs a 7 or 8 win team
April 3rd, 2019 at 3:01 pm
Man Draftwire has a dream draft for us. We trade with Cincy so they can take Haskins. We land Ed Oliver in Cincy’s spot and in the second we pick up both Chris Lindstrom and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson
Third: Paris Campbell WR Ohio St
Fourth: Damien Harris RB Bama
April 3rd, 2019 at 3:29 pm
The BA is better than Gase , while I agree with it, I have noticed that many people, in the past, have questioned why it took DK so long to get a HC opportunity. The implication is He wasn’t head coaching material. B. A. would not have been a Head Coach if not for a lucky break .
Chuck Pagano having cancer.
Gase on the other hand, one of the youngest HC in the league. Obviously, His potential was recognized quickly and He was hired as a HC. BA put in 30 years before a lucky break elevated him into the spotlight. 25 more years than Gase.
Just saying!
April 3rd, 2019 at 3:50 pm
@Joe
Great point on that last play. I almost forgot about that. Basically we still almost beat the Pats even with all the missed FGs/bad red zone execution by the rest of the team.
First FG was 56 yard attempt I can let go.
The 2nd was a 49 yarder and should have been made. That was a drive in which the first play was an 8 yard pass and then we went run-run on 2nd and 2 and 3rd and 2 and couldn’t get it lol. Classic Koetter turtling.
But the worst was in the 4th quarter we had a drive from our own 3 yard line that took like 5-6 minutes. Jameis actually scored a TD on that drive but it was called back on a penalty by Evan Smith. Then Folk missed the 31 yard chip shot FG. lol
Above = Jameis career in a nut shell in terms of W:L and why his record isn’t great IMO.
The only big choke moment I’ve seen in a tight game from Jameis was against the Rams on that drive that fell short late.
Most games come down to 4th quarters and our QB has excelled in those situations while our defense/kicker/coach have folded up like a a thrift store chair
April 3rd, 2019 at 3:52 pm
Just remembered I got SUPER drunk that night at my apartment and it was a very difficult working that next day
April 3rd, 2019 at 4:00 pm
The bills and pats game, I have to add Green Bay and Carolina. Couldn’t pick which one was worse.
The bills and pats ..am I wrong or did winston fumble 2 or 3 times both games. The bills with 1 int and 2 fumbles that’s giving away 25% + of the teams total possessions. 2 to 3 drives is significant.
I think it’s not a stretch to say that Winston has cost more games than the defense lost.
April 3rd, 2019 at 4:36 pm
Lord ,
Best gwd, imo last year, no saints at home. Winston was who we thought he was…a killer..
April 3rd, 2019 at 5:08 pm
Bucs are more like a Windows Vista BSOD. Lots of great new flashy features just no QB consistency or OS stability.
April 3rd, 2019 at 5:16 pm
@di.. you are correct. JW turns it over 3 time of course its almost impossible to win. Sure the d sucks , but how do you win when our qb postion has turned the ball over more than anyone else over the past 4 season. Jw can prevail when we hold the seahawks to 5 or go on the road and hold KC to 17.Probably both sides ofthe argument are right… you can’t win the way the d has played and you can’t win the way the qb has played
April 3rd, 2019 at 5:42 pm
Terrible generic take by this guy. This is where the dolphins were? No the dolphins had gase and tannehill. Gase isnt half the coach Arians is.
April 3rd, 2019 at 7:39 pm
The Dolphins never had a good head coach and ryan t. really? Next….
April 3rd, 2019 at 8:00 pm
Winston, 4th in the NFL in QBR, lead the NFL’s top passing offense.
This fake news narrative that Winston isn’t all that is 100% fake news pushed by lazy slobs who just repeat what they read on bumper stickers.
April 3rd, 2019 at 8:12 pm
Tanier’s the same guy who just said DC keeps ruining their characters, forgetting they changed regimes 2 years ago. In his mock draft he said the 49ers like a certain type of playing (tweener D-lineman) forgetting John Lynch has only been in charge 2 years. Ryan Tannehill was still figuring out how to transition from WR to QB, meanwhile, Winston won a national Championship. Also Tannehill couldn’t stay on the field, and Gase didn’t go into Miami as a two time Coach of the Year. The comparison makes little sense.
April 3rd, 2019 at 8:20 pm
Joe it’s not an official bucs app it’s one that gets news stories from u and other local and national media outlets when it’s a bucs article. For the last 3days it hasnt posted any of ur articles. The app is by id8labs
April 3rd, 2019 at 9:00 pm
By not signing free agents while losing some, the Bucs look to turn the tables and get draft picks… which is better for long term growth. The Bucs used to carry a bad player until the last year of the their rookie contract and send them packing. they need to develop people.
April 3rd, 2019 at 9:12 pm
Thanks Rodney. Didn’t know anything about this. Do know Bleacher Report pumps out Joe’s articles but it is really random.
April 4th, 2019 at 2:50 am
No problem n ur welcome
April 7th, 2019 at 8:44 am
I was gonna write a long respond but realized it wasn’t needed lol…this article is comparing ADAM GASE to Bruce Arians Lmao…
Enough said…
