Bucs Fighting For Big Oil Money
April 2nd, 2019Back in 2010, when the Bucs last had a season of spectacular quarterback play and a truly dangerous football team, most home games were blacked out from local television and that hurt fan interest and attendance.
Perhaps the famous BP oil spill of that spring is to blame?
Remember all the legal ads across the Tampa Bay region that fished for those who wanted to file claims to recover losses as a result of the spill? A Clearwater Beach restaurant might have lost $120,000 in profit, for example, and sought a payback. There are all kinds of businesses that claimed a soiled Gulf of Mexico somehow affected their bottom lines.
And one of them was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A new Yahoo! Sports report details how the Bucs are in court to not only snag millions in retribution, but they want the proceedings kept out of the pubic eye. Apparently, the courts found the latter request ridiculous.
(For the record, Joe opted not to file a BP claim. Sure, Joe could have made a case that Joe’s advertising sales were affected by the spill’s economic impact, but Joe didn’t want to look like some sort of greedy, corporate fat cat tossing blame around like it’s beads at Gasparilla.)
Anyway, per the report, the Buccaneers and the Tampa Bay Lightning were in on the cash grab. The Lightning didn’t request secrecy but the Bucs did ask for a level of it.
Joe wonders how deeply the BP spill really affected operations at One Buc Palace. Perhaps this is why the Bucs finished 10-6 and management and ownership bought nothing but a punter in free agency the following offseason? Surely somebody had to be disturbed to do something like that. Did hidden oil fumes eventually lead Team Glazer to hire ill-suited Greg Schiano? Perhaps this is why Josh Freeman lost his mind?
Joe sure hopes the Bucs stick it to Big Oil and use the money to lower ticket prices, or at least take a tiny percentage of the cash and use it to put outdoor bleachers back at training camp.

I don’t care anymore about sticking it to big oil…I just hope we learned from that experience how BAD it could have been. See what happened in LA it could easily happen here if we permit more offshore drilling in the Gulf.
There is NO need to drill there! It’s dangerous and it only serves the greedy among us.
April 2nd, 2019 at 10:19 am
It would be nice if BP finished the clean up. There is still tons of oil on the bottom of the gulf. It doesn’t look like BP will be held accountable.
April 2nd, 2019 at 10:21 am
What ever STpete! Anyhow can’t believe the Buc’s are using that to get money. Talk about the greedy among us. WOW!!
April 2nd, 2019 at 10:23 am
Maybe that is what caused the MRSA

GREED IS GOOD!!!!!
Gordon Gecko
the only problem with bucs are the glazers they have never gotten a coaching hire right…. dungy the clown wasted sapp and the defense that whyce handed him…. 2 playoff wins is laughable not successful and damn sure not glory years… gruden 1 good year… not a single regime this ownership group has hired produced outside of gruden’s glory year… outside of gruden the rest are given lovie and ray perkins a run for worst of all time….

More interested in the follow up to….”Kendell Beckwith? Answers should be coming from One Buc Palace as players return TOMORROW (april 1st) for physicals and the start of offseason meetings and conditioning.”
If he is healthy and ready to go that would be a huge boost to our LB core.
April 2nd, 2019 at 10:36 am
big oil does far more for the environment than the loudmouth socialists … just like hunters take much better care of the animals than peta members…
April 2nd, 2019 at 10:40 am
This has to be an April fools day joke. It looks so frivolous and petty on the surface, but my bet is the Bucs will get something. Big money lawyers grab more money while the little guy who had to get a no-name lawyer on pro bono is looking for scraps, if any. two-tier?
At least this should give all the little Glazer children something extra in their stockings this Christmas.

The Glazer Babies need to sell the team so they can pursue future litigation against Santa Claus for not giving them the presents they really wanted when they were children and the Tooth Fairy for not paying market rate for their cavity riddled teeth.

As much money that can be seized from BP the better. Those oil companies need to be completely ruined.

truth hurts ma’am….
while libtards are wasting time and talking a good game. big oil is spending millions on research and implementation of actual solutions but let’s not let facts get in the way…. pull your head out of AOC’s rectum and take a breathe of fresh air! big oil does a hell of a lot more good for the environment than those big money hypocrite politicians.
Have you ever visited a drill site or big oil research center??? by the way these programs internally funded. not funded by hard earned tax payer money….
sTpete
if it was not for greedy people you would have no one or money to pay for all the dead beats you support!
April 2nd, 2019 at 11:14 am
It’s not a cash grab, Joe. BP agreed to the settlement, which stated that any business in the “zone” that had a decline in profit was eligible for compensation. Our area falls in the zone. You made a bad business decision…

Tmaxcon hit the limits of the idiocy sky long ago, but now he’s shooting for the stars and beyond. Big oil good for the environment is as myopic as saying coal is clean.
April 2nd, 2019 at 12:42 pm
the tampa bay area was in the on the latter half of a housing and economic meltdown at that point. the oil spill was just an extra kick in the pants of certain businesses, in some cases it was the final nail in the coffin of business by the water already suffering from a local downturn and a national drop in leisure travel. There is and has been an open process for making claims against BP for businesses all around the gulf coast. I’m sure the bucs were better insulated than most other claimants, they won’t get what they are asking for but frankly i don’t begrudge anybody in this area for adding to the cost of BP’s screwup. No matter what they cough up they’re getting off light relative to the aggregate damage done

Dozer
It’s the definition of a cash grab. Billionaires grabbing a few million for something that mighf have had a tiny impact on their bottom line. Man i wish i wouldnt have found that out. Greedy effs.
April 2nd, 2019 at 1:07 pm
Shiano didn’t come until 2012. This article makes it seem otherwise.
Solar, Hydro, Motion, Wind (& many more)..all safe, god-given, free, endless power supplies WAITING to be harnessed. But we want to remain under the thumb of our all-mighty oil-masters & their filthy, deleterious & archaic products and practices.
Much of the world is weening itself from oil and it’s 19th century technology but, not us ‘Mericans! We’s da Goodest!
April 2nd, 2019 at 1:09 pm
Glazers are scumbags. Malcolm was a slum lord back in the day. They don’t care about the fans or winning. They cash checks and suck at being owners.

Of all the moronic things he has written over the years, these comments today from reality-is-a-maxipad might be the dumbest ever.
Congrats buddy.

I love a good fish sandwich, used to anyway. After Fukushima and the BP oil spill I wouldn’t eat any ocean fish. And farmed fish…forget that.

Question: Were local businesses affected by the Deepwater Horizon disaster?
Yes?
Are the Buccaneers locally based and are they a business?
Yes?
Then it is a justified lawsuit.
It doesn’t matter how much money they have coming in at any given time. What matters is whether the disaster cost them money. And it did. It cost everyone money.
And don’t think the exceedingly long red tide this past year had nothing to do with it.
April 2nd, 2019 at 4:30 pm
Wow…the Buc shills are out in full force today
April 2nd, 2019 at 5:20 pm
All the socialists among us got mighty wound up over Tmaxcon comments. Haven’t seen any rebuttals, except calling him a nutcase.
He’s spot on. Big oil pays more in taxes, research, and environmental cause ms than any of your Jesse Jackson shakedown heroes could ever imagine, combined. You lefties and green people are the biggest pigs when it comes to the environment. See- DAPL environmental catastrophe cause by lefty protesters.
As for that solar, wind, and whatever pie in the sky drivel that came up- yeah- free. There’s that word- free. It’s all free. Everything is free. Enjoy your next trip on a solar plane. You go first, tell us how it went. And no, the rest of the world ain’t leading the way. There is no substitute for the combustion engine, professors. This utopia you seek doesn’t exist. Venezuelans are starving because as oil rich as they are, they can’t get enough oil, effectively and efficiently distributed. If they only had solar trucking companies.
Pull your head out of your rear AOC’s.
April 2nd, 2019 at 5:22 pm
Wow. My post is moderated for calling out the socialists amongst us. I guess time will tell Joe.
April 2nd, 2019 at 5:25 pm
Under the thin of oil masters? No dingy, we want effective travel, supply transportation, and lower food prices.
When what we have is gone, as you’d see to, it will be a century before you have a chance to get this freedom back.
April 2nd, 2019 at 6:42 pm
The entire BP oil spill was a scam – literally nothing that the left and the media said was going to happen actually happened. They took a spill and used it as a way to vilify the oil industry. Meanwhile the incredible extent of the damages included things like “tarballs”… which were literally 1/1000th the size of a marble. Meanwhile you’d see these beaches, which were closed and covered with “volunteers” cleaning them up and just standing around as there was literally nothing to clean up. Anywho fake news is called fake news for a reason, but never underestimate the slobs out there who want to profit from anything, and that includes the Glazers who want some of that “free” money.
April 2nd, 2019 at 7:18 pm
Lol
April 2nd, 2019 at 7:31 pm
The people who protest big oil would blow up an oil pipeline and create an environmental catastrophe just to show us what would happen if one of the pipelines were actually blown up.
Wait Rod- are you saying the leftist run media uses events to create momentum for a push for more govt control? Those same folks who claim to be oppressed by the same govt? The people who fear we have a dictator as President but advocate for disarming all of us? Those same media and elected officials?
I think you’re spot on Rod.

I’m glad to see the Bucs are actually trying to win at something!! Maybe they were hoping that if they won this money before FA started they could use it to keep Hump and Kwon and maybe even possibly steal some talent from other teams!! Too bad that didn’t happen…… The only headlines coming out of the Bucs has to do with everything except the most important…… becoming winners!!!
Sorry…… too many years watching the same “we’re gonna be a contender this year” to spending my Sunday’s yelling and screaming at the tv.

I lean more conservative than liberal.
That said, here’s a dose of reality:
The Earth has limits. It was designed with the ability to regenerate, but it does so at a set speed. When demand consumes resources fast than they can be regenerated, it spells disaster.
So yes, there are environmentalists who take it too far, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t real danger to be concerned about.
Anything that helps slow the consumption of Earth’s resources is a good thing, because our population and demand is constantly increasing.
It’s simple math. Take 3 apples from a dozen, put back 2 apples, then repeat. Eventually, you run out of apples.
That’s why hybrid cars are a good thing. They reduce the speed of consumption, which allow more time for the Earth to regenerate.
All other alternatives that do this can only make things better.
And, like it or not, pollution is having a negative impact on our planet.
Anyone here ever breathe clean mountain air? It’s invigorating. Energizing.
Pollution contaminates the rain, which contaminates the land. That clean mountain are is getting harder to find.
So, I’m not environmentalist, but I’m not unreasonable either.

The Deepwater Horizon disaster DID affect us, whether you realize it or not. Tourist dollars. A drastic increase in Red Tide since the disaster. Contagion of sea life. Heck, there have been cases of groups of whales washing up on shores since then.
Only idiots would deny the impact.
