“Risk Management”

March 26th, 2019

Comes clean.

Very interesting words from Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.

Yesterday, Licht appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio with Friend of Joe, Alex Marvez. There while talking about the free agency period this winter, Licht confessed things with the Bucs didn’t go the way he had hoped in recent years and added that was part of the reason the Bucs stood on the sidelines and watched as top shelf players went elsewhere.

“This was by far the most challenging offseason I’ve been a part of with the Buccaneers,” Licht said. “Of course, I will be the first to admit and be fully transparent, you want these challenging offseasons coming off of good seasons. That wasn’t the case so our plans through free agency had to adjust a little bit. …

“I have learned first-hand that winning the offseason doesn’t necessarily equate to winning the regular season. And it is all about winning during the regular season. … We wanted to go to more of a risk management route this year with the signings that we had.”

As Joe has stated, it seems Licht has gone from playing with matches to throwing rocks at moving cars. Of course, the good teams don’t rely heavily on free agency to build a winner; they rely mostly on the draft.

To do that, a team must hit on key draft picks and then develop those picks. For example, what’s the point of getting a haul by trading down if a team whiffs on its draft picks or coaches throw in the towel on those picks?

Please just pick at #5 and get a super star.

  2. Alanbucsfan Says:

Keep investing in trench talent and they’ll get there

  3. ChanEpic Says:

The acknowledgement for the need of a more risk averse/aware is good news. That mindset should be shored up with a brutal evaluation of player evaluation/scouting and make sure that part of the team is also aware of their, middling (some say failed) attempts in FA and drafting. The whole staff needs a mental adjustment, not to mention fans.

    “LOL! comes clean?

We are broke because of this moron and we cant sign good players to help our team because we have no money…

And Gump and JBF is claiming it shows patience and risk management?

What a joke this season is going to be

If you think last year was bad, wait until this year

Kobes BA medical evaluation and analysis coming this week”

I rather trade up! Pick at #5 trade back up in the 1st for rb or cb and trade players and picks to make sure we get two 2nd picks! So we pick two 1st, two 2nd and maybe a 7 or 6 even if we give up a pick next year! We need starters! Now fill the rest in with the undrafted and AAF..

  6. Locked In Says:

    No biscuit

  7. Jean Lafitte Says:

There is no consistency whatsoever. We like to fire head coaches every 1 to 3 years. Why develop players for the next regime?

  8. J Says:

Great, Licht does a good job of getting extra picks but we never get whom we truly need…so for the love of all that’s holy, just stay at 5. You cant mess this up, or can you?

  9. sunshine Says:

WHY is Light still employed by the bucs /??

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Bravo Joe … you’re finally seeing the Licht. Not very shiny is it?

I’ll commit JBF heresy here … Stick at #5 and select MLB Devin White, REGARDLESS of who’s still on the board. No trade-ups, no trade-downs. Then in the 2nd Rnd grab the best OG still on the board, and in the 3rd Rnd draft the best RB still there to complement Barber. After that, I don’t care. Sign Claiborne RIGHT NOW (after convincing ME13 to restructure his contract to free up enough $$$ to make it happen).

i know there’s LOTS of DLine talent this year, but if we don’t get a quality starting MLB with solid leadership skills we’re dead meat. AND if we don’t improve our running game, we’re also dead meat. And if we don’t get a quality starting outside corner, oh ya, we’re dead meat.

  11. Tackleblockwin Says:

Licht took over in 2014. It’s clear to me his goal was to build a solid Offense and design a D that would be just good enough. But goal one was build an Offense. So let’s grade how he has done.

    QB C+
    RB C-
    WR B+
    TE B
    LT C
    LG B
    C B
    RG D-
    RT C-

Let’s now grade the defense. Well, let’s just say epic fail. How about ST. Good Lordy it has been a mess at K.

Meanwhile the Glazer Boys are on our 5th HC in the last 10 years. Every level of this organization is to blame. I’m rooting for BA and Bowles but the task at hand regardless of what they say is going to be an uphill battle. We Bucs fans will be ready for another bumpy ride in 2019.

  12. ncbucsfan Says:

People…..Devin White will not be the pick at #5…..if Licht values his job. Maybe in a trade-down scenario, but he is not Elite and may not even be the best Devin in the draft. There are about 5 Inside-backers in this draft that I believe will be as effective as him and can be had down into the 3rd-4th round. 4 positions are of higher need than MLB, (DL, RG, CB, RB)

  13. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I’m Okay with trading down as long as we get the better end of the deal and licht uses the same risk management philosophy with his second round picks – which always seems to be a wasted pick (Aguayo, Spence, Stewart and Rojo).

  14. Destinjohnny Says:

Jason will find a way to blow it

  15. Bobby M. Says:

Licht should stick with #5….draft the positions he’s had some success at. LB and OL….we need both. The LB from LSU by all accounts is a cant miss 10 yr starter….We need help there, LBs can generally start from day one and Licht has some success at drafting/scouting LBs. Let’s not over think this.

Rds 2-7…go after offensive linemen and a sleeper QB to groom as a back up and that’s your draft. We don’t need WRs/TEs…d-line is good for now. We suck at drafting RBs and secondary players….don’t waste opportunities on positions we have depth or simply don’t scout well.

  16. pelbuc Says:

Licht is the epitomy of the “Peter Principle”. Dude is so incompetent on so many levels. Should have been fired after the Aguayo debacle, yet keeps on surviving as the Bucs GM. SMH!!!

  17. zzbuc Says:

´I have learned first-hand that winning the offseason doesn’t necessarily equate to winning the regular season….. by Jason Licht

When did the bucs won any offseason? The bucs have been losing offseason and season sistematically for several years!!!!!!!

This guy needs a new GPS, he is way out of the right path!!!

  18. Joe Says:

Buccaneerscotty has a good point. If Bucs want Josh Allen go get him. Not like the Bucs are trading up from No. 20.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

    DR

ignoring the dline would put a nail in lichts coffin…..lol….

we have to draft GMC’s and gholston’s replacements within the first 3rounds…..OL in the 2nd would be good but the first 3 picks have to be for the trenches…..

before the bechwith injury, LB was considered one of the strengths of the team…..none of those guys were drafted in the first round and we were solid…..they produced….hell kwon even made the PB…..

besides the obvious lack of coaching, our problem has been line play…..stopping the run and running the ball….rushing the passer and protecting the QB…..

if QW aint there, trade down get an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick and draft Ed Oliver in the 1st round….2nd round DE or OL….3rd round OL or DE…..send the extra 3rd to the jets for darron lee…jets want a 3rd for him….4th round RB….after that BPA…..

if we dont come out of the draft with 2 DL’s and 2 OL’s we’re dead meat…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  20. J Says:

@ ncbucsfan, who is that you believe is better than Devin White? Just curious.

  21. Defense Rules Says:

@813bucboi … “none of those guys were drafted in the first round and we were solid…..they produced”. Yes LBs were touted as a strength of the team, BEFORE Beckwith’s injury, BEFORE Kwon signed with SF, BEFORE Taylor signed with Cleveland. RIGHT NOW we have LVD, Beckwith, Minter, Bucannon, Bond, Cichy, Bullough, Barrett, Nelson & E Smith. Are you willing to start (and finish) the season with that group, most of whom spent more time on IR than on the field?

I’d LOVE to draft replacements for GMC & JPP this year in the first 2 Rounds, and then grab a OG & RB in the next 2 Rounds. But if we do, you’ll have a weak LB corps and a very young Secondary that needs a LOT of polishing to be even adequate much less great. As goes our defense, so goes our team. THAT’S the Bucs history.

  22. denjoe Says:

Licht is so full it. At least this is probably his last year, barring a miracle winning season with a bunch of bums, he’s drafted and signed.

  23. Issaic haggins Says:

No he didn’t come clean !!! Clean is , we are last in the league with cap room ( I am responsible for these players and payroll) and only have one pro bowl player !!! This isn’t good , not good at all , not what I envisioned !! I know that had better change this year or I expect and should be fired come Nov .
