Keeping GMC

March 15th, 2019

Bucs need him now.

Unless the Bucs plan on making a big splash with a trade, there is no reason to wave goodbye to Gerald McCoy.

The veteran defensive tackle, now entering his 10th NFL season and still looking for his first playoff appearance (what a friggin’ crime!) seemed as if he could have been a salary casualty because he is pulling in $13 million this season and the Bucs have maxed out the Team Glazer Mastercard.

Joe was chagrin but open-minded to this happening if the Bucs could replace GMC (and his salary) with a stud defensive lineman and/or a top-shelf rookie.

For example, if the Bucs had been wise and proactive and traded one of their normally cursed second-round picks to the Chiefs for Dee Ford, and then drafted a tackle at No. 5 next month, then yeah, Joe would have been open to seeing GMC go.

More importantly, seeing GMC’s salary go.

Obviously, just about any defensive edge rusher worth having is gone in free agency. And the Bucs don’t appear inclined to add anyone else of significance. So since that is the case, there is no reason to banish GMC. He’s a good player and a warrior.

Unless Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht is working on a trade in the background (JPP was acquired on March 22 last year) there is no reason to run off GMC quite yet.

I like GMC but a good football team would have let gin walk years ago and that’s a fact. I can almost guarantee you if he was drafted by the pats thwy wouldnt have paid him as long as we have. The sad part is that even if we were good he still might not be able to help due to his injuries which occur every season without fail. Hope we trade him for a player than can contribute at RB or Secondary NOW. Draft picks wont help Licht get either of those positions as you know, Joe. I really wish GMC the best while still admitting a contender like the pats wouldn’t have paid for this man.

  2. Andrew Says:

This team WILL trade for a veteran corner. Preferably one who got a big signing bonus and has a reasonable base salary annually (around $10-11M), similar to the AB trade. The other team takes some dead money this year and gets a draft pick.

No way they head into the draft with Vernon, Ryan Smith, and C Davis as their only corners after being miserable last year.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Dee Ford again……So, Joe would like to get rid of GMC’s salary but fails to mention the $17 mil salary for Ford….and a 2nd round pick. Then having to use our top pick on a DT.
So we lose $6 or $7 million and a #2 pick (if we get GMC to restructure to $10-11million.
    NO THANKS.

  4. SCBucsFan Says:

I know Tmax is on board with not only keeping but extending McCoy

  5. gotbbucs Says:

More like the Penguin than Batman.

New coaching staff that will have the misfortune of using this guy as the centerpiece of its front 7 and watching him wilt at crunch time.

  6. Loyaltotheend Says:

GMC good player but unable to elevate a unit and is to soft to win

    It’s a Bucs Life

  7. SCBucsFan Says:

You guys are correct, he keeps being named all pro because he stinks. And he’s soft.

  8. AlteredEgo Says:

It seems Licht’s 5 year salary cap budget projection had the Buc coming off a SB appearance after the 2018 season…

  9. AlteredEgo Says:

After football (next year) JL will be heard on local TV and radio advertising his debt consolidation business

  10. D-Rome Says:

Rockstar Mark Dominick and Backstabbin’ Jason Licht **WASTED** Gerald McCoy’s prime years.

    WASTED!!!

  11. Jeebs Says:

Seriously Joe, Dee Ford was a 1-year wonder who cost his team the Super Bowl due to a terrible mental error, and he would have cost most than we can can afford. GMC is worth $13m in this market. He is only 31 for God’s sake, not 35. Let’s see what he can do under Bowles.

  12. BlogTalkFootball Says:

I still believe that Licht should be working with McCoy on an extension that restructures the $13 million to something more reasonable. He has to know that his salary is hurting the team’s ability to bring in more bodies. If he is a team first guy, then he should have no problem restructuring.

  13. SCBucsFan Says:

BTF, under that logic Evans, Marpet, JW and others would restructure to allow a better team. Its noble and it appears Brees and Brady understand it (as they are already God awful rich and want to win) but I don’t see alot of players do this. Maybe – maybe – if this team was close I could see it, but no need for McCoy to give money back to get us from 5 to 6 wins.

  14. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Such a horrible GM, can he not see what the winning franchises do, they get rid of the dead weight and improve their teams with the assets they have and currently I think everyone on the bucs roster aside from, ME13 and OJ, should be available to help this team and GMC along with djax should have been shipped out last year during the season….but licht is the master of building a 5-11 franchise

  15. joestang Says:

GMC is not worth 13 mil. Most GM;s would try to restructure his contract to help the team. Licht is clueless, worst GM I have even seen. We will be a terrible team until Licht is gone.

  16. Alanbucsfan Says:

Receivers and TE are in place for next 5 years
Assuming they keep Jameis ( they should), focusing on drafting trench talent and linebackers the next 2 years should get them to playoffs ( no busts please)

  17. BlogTalkFootball Says:

The only period when Licht was any good was when Jon Robinson was working for him.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The GMC restructure can be a win-win…..>GMC doesn’t give money back for nothing in return…..none of his salary going forward is guaranteed…..he can exchange some non-guaranteed salary for guaranteed salary.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Read This:

    BlogTalkFootball Says
“I still believe that Licht should be working with McCoy on an extension that restructures the $13 million to something more reasonable.”

Clearly, we do not know everything that is happening behind the scenes. Let me lay out a couple scenarios for you guys as to why Jason has not reworked McCoy’s contract:

    • Jason could hope to draft a replacement for McCoy. Reworking the contract would lock McCoy into a guarantee and would be counter productive. If this is the case, if Jason does not get the guy he wants to replace McCoy, then we might see a restructure after the draft.

    • Jason could be hoping to use McCoy to trade up in the draft in order to get someone he wants. If so, McCoy would have to be willing to do a restructure with the new team.

So, while the haters are saying Jason Licht sucks, we all know he is exceptional at working trades in the draft, and so he probably has a plan where McCoy is concerned.

  20. Lubby Smith Says:

    Cut him.

Or continue paying top dollar to this lovable clown… Keep him as the cornerstone of the d, and wonder why it’s a laughing stock for yet another year.

  21. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

DUH, Ummm, why should I restructure McCoy’s contract?
    HeeHaww, duh, doo-doo.

    (Says Dunce Cap Licht)

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Remember, the Bucs do not have to fit under the cap until September or so. There is no rush for the players who are on the team, not really.

Depending on trades and the draft, Kicht can restructure or release players at any point.

  23. Jamaal Stanley Says:

The 9:39 post was light.. Use it people.

  24. pepsi Says:

For everyone saying we should restructure McCoy, id like to hear your proposals of the numbers.. Heres some scenarios to think about.. if McCoy doesnt restructure and plays as a buc this year and is released next year, then he makes 13mil, and is a FA at 32 and probably lands a solid 2 year deal in a market that keeps going up so he probably still lands a 8mil a year type deal.. thats 13 + 8 + 8 = 29mil (and i think thats conservative). If he doesnt restructure and is released, he can probably land a solid 2-3 year dealright now with maybe 20mil+ in guarunteed money.. So first propose a restructure deal that helps us greatly in cap right now while also being beneficial to McCoy compared to what he could probably get else where..

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

A 3-year $27 million dollar deal with $18 guaranteed should do it.

  26. tbbucs3 Says:

GMC is the face of a #32 defense 5 years running now.

The Bucs had an opportunity to change and they kept the root of their losing with Jason Licht and Gerald McCoy.

Do the Bucs seriously think that an expensive GMC will make us better?

  27. Mike Griczika Says:

    Joe,

Looking through the salaries, I’ve settled on 3 guys that only 2 out of the three will be on the team next year. Brate, McCoy, JPP. Bucs can make all the small adjustments they want, but if the roster is to be significantly changed at all there has to be a significant loss in terms of the cap. To me, I would argue Brate is most likely to go because he has a top 10 cap hit on the team and doesn’t necessarily need to be replaced especially if Auclair is a legit 2 in the eyes of the staff. I’m wondering if you agree or feel McCoy or JPP is more likely to go. I could see JPP being moved IF we first draft an edge rusher (Josh Allen?) or McCoy go if we snag a DT (Quinnen?)

  28. Rayjay1122 Says:

Anyone who thinks the Bucs won’t suck again this season AR kidding themselves. Coaching may be better but no talent to coach.

  29. Defense Rules Says:

Personally I don’t think restructuring GMC’s contract makes a whole lot of sense for the Bucs, but reducing his salary from $13 mil to say $8 mil in exchange for not releasing him sure does. I like GMC & feel that a 31-year old DT with his 2018 performance can be worth $8 mil in 2019. No way IMO that he’s worth $13 mil based on what he showed in 2018.

Restructuring is ONLY a good idea IMO IF you expect the player to be with you for several years AFTER the restructuring happens, primarily because the team’s giving him a paid-up-front ‘signing bonus’ (guaranteed $$$) in exchange for spreading that signing bonus over the remaining life of the contract as allowed by NFL rules. IOW, if GMC fails to perform ‘adequately’ for whatever reason, we’d be pretty much stuck keeping him OR lose our shirts in terms of salary Cap impact in subsequent years. We’re ALREADY behind the 8-ball in terms of 2020 & 2021 salary Cap; restructuring GMC would make that even worse. No thanks.

BTW, there’s an excellent article in the Chicago Tribune on how this worked for the Bears when they restructured Kalil Mack’s contract to gain 2019 salary Cap space. It’s at https://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/ct-spt-cb-bears-restructure-contracts-khalil-mack-20190312-story.html

  30. pepsi Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan
Thats 9mil a year for 3 years, 2 of them being guaranteed. A couple issues:
1)Do we really want 32 oft banged up McCoy on the books as 9mil in dead cap next year? Maybe we drafted Ed Oliver and now McCoy is just 9mil we dont need.
2)McCoy could land a deal that gives 18mil in guarunteed no problem in FA next year, and wouldnt have to cut from 13 down to 9 this year, so this deal loses McCoy money for sure..

  31. SCBucsFan Says:

tbbucs3 he’s the face of the 32 defense because he’s the only one that gets noticed for his play. The other guys are faceless. Being the best player on a bad D doesn’t make you horrible by default.

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Pepsi

I didn’t say restructure him now…..if we landed a replacement then trade him.

If GMC is worth keeping 1 year at $13 mil…..he is worth keeping 2 years at $18. IMO

  33. Greg Says:

Really, we can’t do without him and his $13M hit? I don’t know, he had all of 28 tackles last season, which equates to $464,285.71 a tackle. We would’ve been better off drafting his replacement and used that $13M on a S, CB and LB. Just like last year when we could’ve gotten a 3rd or 4th round pick for MeSaun, but Licht wouldn’t pull the trigger, same is going to happen with McCoy and he’ll be his normal gameday non-factor on the field for us this season.

  34. SCBucsFan Says:

Greg thinking we would ever get a 3 for Jackson is a dream. AB got a 3 and 5.

  35. pepsi Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan
so your saying restructure him next year? 1 year at 13 mil now isnt even the best but I think its worth it for the quality bodies wed have on Dline to go with a rookie, but I really would not like the idea of 2 more years after this one being guaranteed on the books for him, thatd be awful. The restructuring McCoy talk going on is about restructuring him now.

  36. BucsFIRE Says:

I was ready to move on from GMC but I have to admit that I am intrigued to see how he does with a whole new D philosophy in here.

  37. DB55 Says:

Joe obviously been drinking early this morning talking about McIceCream is a warrior. That’s some funny ish right there dawg!

Warrior princess? “I’m sorry Ben” lmao

  38. Buc believer Says:

Holy greenbacks Batman I can give you 13 million reasons to cut this wanna be fake of a player who has everyone hoodwinked into thinking he is something he is not… a good player.

  39. pelbuc Says:

GMC is neither the present nor the future. Way overrated and very much past his prime. Never made a meaning play in a clutch game. Licht is incompetent to say the least. GMC would have been traded years ago if he were with the Patriots. He is one of the reasons Licht has put this team in such a horrible position. GMC never did a damn thing to elevate the play of those around him. It took JPP to get here to have a sliver of a pass rush. Another wasted year overpaying this stiff to dance or cry on the sidelines.

  40. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Pepsi

No, I’m saying restructure him this year after the draft if we haven’t drafted a replacement….if we have, trade him either on draft day or after.
Regardless, I would not go with more than 2 years guaranteed (including this year)
Not all players are about making every penny……he already has made near $70 million dollars…..so 4 or 5 less going forward…..maybe he doesn’t want to move his family……and maybe he doesn’t want to gamble on the open market…..so a 2 year guarantee may do it.

  43. Pryda30.... sec 147 Says:

Maybe he can have his best season ever

  44. Jeff Says:

Bucs brass has zero creativity and even less vision. Dee Ford, JPP, Vea and Ed Oliver. Would take that all day everyday. Nobody would miss GMC. They couldn’t even fathom such a move.

  45. Lord Cornelius Says:

I doubt McCoy would restructure to less than what Adam Humphries makes now / in general due to how big the deals are going out in FA.

All I know is we need to figure out RG and defense lol. Guessing/hoping they are going to see how the draft plays out / possibly be more creative with cuts/trades based on that.

I.e. if Quennen Williams is at 5 then moving on from GMC seems a lot more likely than say drafting Devin White and no DT till round 4/5.

  46. Loyaltotheend Says:

    @SCBucsfan

McCoy hasn’t been First Team All-Pro since 2014

Where has his leadership ever led the defense?

His prime years were wasted he’s not worth 13 million especially with a deep talented d line draft…

  47. tmaxcon Says:

The Bucs are better off with a herpes epidemic in the locker room versus keeping a proven loser and 100% clown like cancer93. You can’t win with soft heartless players like cancer93…. FOLKS IT HAS BEEN PROVEN FOR A DECADE!!! SCOREBOARD

sorry the truth hurts your feelings. That being said your feelings are beyond meaningless regardless of what mamma and daddy told ya… no one supports a loser like low standard bucfan

  49. SOEbuc Says:

People keep bashing Licht, but he was the ONLY reason we got BA to come to Tampa. And when BA did, he said he’s “reloading, not rebuilding.” I think BA is calling a lot of these serious shots.

My dream scenario. Trade GMC for some picks. Devin Butkus at number five. Do what you have to do to trade back into the first for Greedy Williams. Then we’ll see what everyone thinks of Licht cus one if not both of those guys are gonna be pro bowlers.

  50. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    GMC

Should stand for “Get My Cash”

If he cared about the Bucs, he would restructure his contract.

And don’t tell me “would I take less money”?

Hell YES! IF I already made the millions he has, I would take less for the common good of the team.

  51. SOEbuc Says:

Devin White is a MLB/DT. Having Devin White or LVD showing blitz behind Vea…that’s seriously get QBs nervous. Then we need a serious outside CB and I’m good to go with the new Bowels project.

  52. #1bucfan Says:

Haha nobody cares what you think or say tmax. You don’t know what truth is. The 💩that comes out of that toliet you call a mouth is hilarious but it deff ain’t no truth

  53. DB55 Says:

    Tmax

    Bro I’m crying OVA HEER

  54. gotbbucs Says:

Dude has made $110 million dollars off this team in the last 9 year and has helped them win……..nothing. Been through what, four coaching staffs, and now onto his fifth? The last time this team really stood a chance at the playoffs was his rookie year, and he was on injured reserve I believe for the stretch run of that season. He has seen endless amounts of defensive teammates come and go in the last decade and somehow this guy continues to skate through unscathed year after year with the same BS excuses yearly.
He of all people should be begging for a fresh start somewhere, but……the problem is he doesn’t care about winning. He cares about cashing the checks and having a good old time out there. Guy is happy as can be after every loss out there yucking it up with the opposite g players after the game that just got done hanging 40 points on HIS defense.

Does anybody wonder why many of the defensive players that leave this team and go elsewhere and succeed do so? They get out from under the clown shoes of this guy that, win-lose-draw, just wants to have fun. They go to programs that have leaders on the field that dont tolerate losing.

He thinks of himself as an entertainer, not a football player. Its sickening to watch year after year.

  55. SOEbuc Says:

“Devin White is a MLB/DT. Having Devin White or LVD showing blitz behind Vea…that’s seriously get QBs nervous.”

I guess I hadn’t thought about it like that. No way I want to keep GMC for $13 million cus I think his football play is far from worthy of that (6 sacks, 28 solo 2018). But the dude is still a beast and strong as hell. Maybe they’re gonna have serious plan about blitzing the MLB. JPP/GMC/Vea/Nassib with White and LVD showing blitz or blitzing behind them? That’s some scary sh!t.

  56. BucEmUp 7 Says:

At this point the to shelf guys we could use are gone. cut william goldston and trade brate let mccoy stay…too late

“People keep bashing Licht, but he was the ONLY reason we got BA to come to Tampa. And when BA did, he said he’s “reloading, not rebuilding.” I think BA is calling a lot of these serious shots.”

Easy on the BA worship…Licht got a guy with health issues to come to a team known for Vacation Pay. A guy that has flat out said he won’t be here long.

And as far as I know. BA is known for being a QB whisperer, not a GM whisperer or draft Guru. Putting all our eggs in the BA basket is premature, and Licht has done very, very little to help his own case

  58. tmaxcon Says:

    DB55

What up bro. Hope all is well. Keeping Dotson and cancer93 is going to send BA to the cardiologist.

  59. Mo Says:

I agree with Tmax GMC is trash no hands can’t get off any blocks

  60. Phil Says:

I don’t see any reason to keep him. You don’t who might be available after the draft.

  61. Jean Lafitte Says:

  64. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @TBBF

I like the way you think and I think the numbers you tossed around were appropriate. As you and others have pointed out GMC is fabulously wealthy already. The numbers on the contract are about respect not need. If we parse it as GMC being kind enough to give us a “home town discount” implying he’s worth more that might help as well.

    @JOE

Have you heard any rumblings out of OBP about reworking GMC’s contract?

  65. Issaic haggins Says:

Hey 13 million isn’t what it used to be but on this team with a new Leader it’s not even the 13 million ,it’s the attitude and the acceptance/ loser presence. The losing culture! The moron before buffoon Licht said McCoy would bring a second ( just 4 months ago) Licht is libel to swap six and seven‘s again so there’s both ends of the buffoon moron GM spectrum !!! The biggest problem is Juan is still employed by the box and once again is friends with the head coach, that doesn’t work very often !!!

  66. admin Says:

Have you heard any rumblings out of OBP about reworking GMC’s contract?

No. Doesn’t mean that isn’t happening.
