NFL Network: Bucs Sign Deone Bucannon, “The Moneybacker”
March 12th, 2019UPDATED 6:07 p.m. – The Buccaneers’ linebackers crisis is less worrisome this evening, unless their shiny new free agent signing is going to play safety.
Former first-round draft pick and ex-Cardinals safety/linebacker Deone Bucannon is expected to sign with the Bucs, per NFL Network.
Bucannon 26, was drafted No. 27 overall by Bruce Arians and the Cardinals back in 2014. The following season Bucannon was moved to inside linebacker after Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles bolted the same job in Arizona for the Jets head coaching gig. Bucannon had a good year and started the entire season.
It was downhill from there for Bucannon. Joe read in the New York Post that Bucannon is known for being good at dropping in coverage.
No word yet on how much Team Glazer loot will fall in Bucannon’s pocket for a one-year, prove-it deal.
Ian Rapoport cranked out a neat video feature on Bucannon’s signing and briefly explained his former “moneybacker” role in Arizona.

Looks like a good value pic. Im waiting for Joes response to Charlie Casserly saying we shoulf fire Jason Light and draft Haskins just a few minutes ago.
March 12th, 2019 at 6:11 pm
I like the signing. Bucannon had a very good year while under BA. BA will know how to use him.
The Hybrid S/ILB is going to be a popular position if the league continues to be so pass happy.
March 12th, 2019 at 6:11 pm
“They should fire whoever drafted Winston and draft Haskins” I think was the quote.
March 12th, 2019 at 6:16 pm
Didn’t Charlie Casselry draft David Carr…smh
March 12th, 2019 at 6:18 pm
Charley Casserly in the past month has gone off the rails.
He bashed Kyler Murray after the combine
He bashed Josh Rosen after backlash for bashing Murray
He said the Cowboys misused Cole Beasley because they “threw the ball to Dez Bryant too much last season”, Dez never played last season.
Anything Charley Casserly says is nonsense until proven otherwise lol
March 12th, 2019 at 6:19 pm
Didn’t Charlie Casserly draft David Carr…how’d that work out SMH…
March 12th, 2019 at 6:20 pm
This signing makes sense. Interested to see how much the 1 year deal is worth. Im going to guess more than people would expect based on the money being thrown around so far lol
March 12th, 2019 at 6:20 pm
HA HA HA. Poor old guy might be done soon from NFL network.
March 12th, 2019 at 6:20 pm
I remember seeing this guy flash a few years back…could be a decent fit. I agree with Casserley on firing Licht Weight and wouldn’t mind Haskins although I still believe in Jamies ( mostly ).
March 12th, 2019 at 6:21 pm
He played 1 season with Bowles when he was a rookie but it appears his best season was 2015 – the year after Bowles left Arizona. Guessing he will be somewhere between good and horrible. i.e. fair – better in pass situations than run.
March 12th, 2019 at 6:23 pm
Already an upgrade over Kwon
March 12th, 2019 at 6:25 pm
Turning into the Tampa bay cardinals ….
March 12th, 2019 at 6:27 pm
You have me confused now Joe. Bucannon goes 6’1 & 211 lbs and you’re saying that he played ILB in 2015? That’d be very light for a MLB obviously, so I assume that Kevin Minter (being the other ILB that year) did most of the ‘heavy lifting’ in the middle. Whatever, because Bucannon is an excellent pickup (unless Bucs really try to use him in the middle and forego drafting Devin White).
March 12th, 2019 at 6:29 pm
“Moe” 3’rd Stooge Casserly, a true legend in his own mind. Chucky should have hired him to be his GM. 😭
March 12th, 2019 at 6:33 pm
@DefenseRules: thats exactly where he played…..Inside Line-backer! He is great in coverage, specifically for tight-ends and Rbs on screens and checkdowns. With Alvin Kamara and Christin McCaffrey in our division. He will be on the field 70% of the time (nickel).
March 12th, 2019 at 6:35 pm
If we had him last year, Curtis samels doesn’t run for like a 144 yards on that one play. Good pick up.
March 12th, 2019 at 6:42 pm
LB was our most essential need. We had to make a move their. Sounds like some upside to this guy too. I expect another move to shore up that position. Maybe Minter, who knows?
I don’t think we should leave free agency without bringing in a G and a CB. And a K. Those positions are too weak at the moment.
March 12th, 2019 at 6:47 pm
Good example of a player declining from a coaching change. Good …smart pickup
March 12th, 2019 at 6:50 pm
He played safety for Bowles. Was moved to inside LB after Bowles left. Did okay for a year.
Then injuries struck.
In other words…he’s a One Year Wonder.
And we have a great record with those. Not.

JimmyJack, our guard is Leidke or Cappa.
March 12th, 2019 at 6:54 pm
i think charlie casserly has dementia. I heard him basically retract his disparaging remarks of kyler murray and actually say that he is better than pat mahomes coming out. dude needs to retire and just be quiet. his interviews are getting embarrassing, he has a hard time keeping a conversation without sounding like your crazy old grandpa.
March 12th, 2019 at 6:55 pm
@Miken and Jimmyjack: Exactly!
Licht is definitely taking a different approach than his previous offseasons but I believe the roster-assessment Arians and the staff did was pivotal in altering our approach to free agency. BA didnt draft or coach anyone and can honestly and unbiasedly critique each player’s abilities. I never felt Koetter brought an identity to this team, Love did but it was outdated, and Schianos was made for a college campus instead of paid professional men, so I feel we will see a team with an on-field brand for the first time since Chucky and Kiffin were here (2008)! Damn, its been a long time!
March 12th, 2019 at 6:56 pm
Bonzai I meant our starting guard. Granted the may win the job which should be the goal.
But we need a guard who we know can start on game 1. Can’t say that about Cappa or Liedke.

Ah, you guys just don’t want to admit it bc you are biased, but the Casserole is right in this one. The sooner we part ways with Sir Wins-a-few, the sooner we will become relevant again. Trouble is, the newly appointed head honcho seems to think JW is the second coming of Joe Montana. HA! I’d hate to have to say this (YET AGAIN), but it’s going to be a few years. Best to remain emotionally uninvested in any sort of immediate success, just sit back and watch the shot show ensue. Cheers!
March 12th, 2019 at 7:08 pm
“We need 3-4 starters from this years draft…EOM”
Kobe Faker
March 12th, 2019 at 7:10 pm
BOD my blood is pewter buddy. I don’t know how to be emotional uninvested.
March 12th, 2019 at 7:23 pm
Casserly needs to stfu and go away
March 12th, 2019 at 7:37 pm
JW screwed up last year because of his ill advised Arizona “adventure”. Missing those first three games and watching Fitzmagic light it up did him in…for last year.
BA hopes to recapture the magic he saw in the young JW. I do not believe BA thinks JW is the next coming of Joe Montana or even an HOF QB….he doesn’t need one to win. He just needs to harness the talent JW DOES possess and eliminate the stupid mistakes.
If they fix the defense which I believe they will and IF they find a kicker who can make extra points and field goals, which I’m very uncertain…they can make a playoff run.
Injuries are the wild card as they are for most teams. But we’ve been stretched thin and it’s enough to just replace starters much less develop depth….unless Licht can hit the bigtime once again with UDFA’s like Hump, Brate, and Barber.
March 12th, 2019 at 7:52 pm
I watched Kyle Murray highlights last night and wow. That kid is fast. And unloads the ball so quick with such zip and accuracy. He looked like a superstar. So then that made want to go watch Winston’s college tape. Wow he looked just like he looks now with the bucs. All over the place takes a long time when he decides to throw it to wind up and get in a throwing motion. He just doesn’t have it he is who he is. A guy who will flash some times with some great throws but most of the time just looked like a confused mess running around. Casserly may be on to something. But I would at least see what good coaching does for him. He has this one year to prove it. And if he still is average at the halfway point of the season. I say we see what we have in griffin or a rookie qb if we draft one late.
March 12th, 2019 at 8:23 pm
Humm, he wasn’t good enough to start for an awful Cardinals team last year, so there’s that. But he was a starter with Arians and his stats look OK – sounds like this is just a cheap signing, shouldn’t hurt the comp formula much.
March 12th, 2019 at 8:34 pm
And with the 2’nd pick in the 2020’ draft ……
March 12th, 2019 at 8:35 pm
Im thinking about jumping ship for a couple of years ?? The Browns aren’t playing !!! OBJ joins the Dog Pound!! Bucs should do the same with Mike Evans ( and let him win a title ) since we are years and so many players away from being good again .. Dog Pound is ready to bite again
March 12th, 2019 at 8:49 pm
All y’all talking bout leaving… bye Felicia! Go cheer for the Browns. This isn’t some Jerry Maguire “who’s coming with me” moment.
Have a great day…
I say good day!
March 12th, 2019 at 9:02 pm
Casserly problem is he has no business both training players for combine interviews and as a business and being on NFL network getting paid to dog players who didn’t solicit his services. It’s a clear conflict of interest.
March 12th, 2019 at 9:23 pm
Jeffbuc is right–this is a win win year for Bucs. Winston plays great with a new opportunity-yeah! or Winston continues to be average or below average turnover prone and then Bucs don’t sign him to long term deal and we draft a new QB in a good draft year for the qb’s. Yeah! Either way it turns out for Bucs fans going forward.
Casserly is on a rapid mental decline–maybe he has gone off his meds, his commentary is not to be taken seriously.
March 12th, 2019 at 9:26 pm
I think it’s intersting his position is somewhat unclear. We need safety and we desperately need LB. Either way it’s worth the risk but I would like to know the plan here. Can I start the Justin Houston discussion now?
March 12th, 2019 at 9:27 pm
WutdaBucisthis yes sir yes sir!!!!!!!
March 12th, 2019 at 9:50 pm
Casserly has CTE
March 12th, 2019 at 10:14 pm
Hey Yucsfan, it’s Dawg Pound…. feel free to join them trader
March 13th, 2019 at 12:36 am
casserly is getting sick…please do not make fun of him
March 13th, 2019 at 12:40 am
He is ranked worse than kwon in almost every category.
HE stinks.
Zombies think he’s good?
LOL.
March 13th, 2019 at 2:09 pm
BOD24 Says….silly Bucs fan.
This team lost and lost BADLY with or without Jameis.
They still do.
They’ll continue to lose when he’s gone too….and where will BOD be then?
Or are you some new fan or something?
Fans who think Jameis is the sole reason why the Bucs have sucked for the past 15 years need to have their heads examined. Not saying you BOD…but maybe I am…..
