Cha-ching.
That cash register you hear in the background? No, that’s not NFL owners cashing checks from a TV network.
Instead, that’s the ringtone on Adam Humphries’ cell phone. Pretty soon that ringtone will be a notification alert that Humphries’ checking account deposit has reached its monthly limit.
NFL insider heavy metal headbanging Jason La Canfora has had his ear to the dirt since he landed in Indianapolis last week for the start of the combine and he hears Humphries just may sign a contract that will match what Bucs malcontent receiver is stealing receiving from Team Glazer.
The bad news for Bucs fans, it’s unlikely that his new contract will be with the Bucs.
Adam Humphries has priced himself out of Tampa and is poised to do very well, perhaps reaching the $10M a year mark.
This is not good news for the Bucs. Humphries was easily their most consistent receiver last year. He’s not the most talented, but the most reliable. And he has great chemistry with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
Mark Joe’s words: If the Bucs lose Jackson (likely) it won’t be a big deal. If the Bucs lost Kwon Alexander, depending on who the Bucs sign, it may not be a big deal. If the Bucs lose Gerald McCoy, depending who they draft to replace him, it won’t cripple the defense. The defense is already horrible with him.
If the Bucs lose Humphries, it will be felt.
Just get it over with and shove the funds that were going to go to Jackson over to Humphries and be done with it. This doesn’t take a calculus major to figure out.

This is a new offense, who knows if Hump would be utilized the same. I don’t remember Arians utilizing a slot guy like Hump. He liked the bigger guys in the slot, I’m not worried about losing Hump (at 10M) or Jackson, especially with OJ coming back.
I think losing Kwon would hurt the most but it all depends on what he is asking. I don’t think he is going to get 9-10M on the open market. We should bring him back in the 7-8M range.

Most reliable? If you can’t get open more than 5 yards down field then how reliable is that? Yes, he caught a bunch of passes at the LOS after the Sims got hurt and was cut, but he was also #4 on the depth chart for a reason. He is valuable at that place on the depth chart, but he’s by no means irreplaceable. Anywho if he’s gone, then so be it, get the biggest deal he can so the Bucs might get a comp pick out of it. But there’s no way I’m paying even $7m for a #4 WR who relies on being deep on the depth chart so he’s being covered by LBs and backup safeties.

Hump is no Julian Edelman. What does he make? $10 mil is way too much for a slot receiver. He can be replaced.

I like Hump but we should have other receivers on the team who can find and sit in the soft zones underneath the coverage. My biggest concern is finding a WR who can make the tough acrobatic bullet catches consistently. Hump is sure handed and doesn’t drop a lot of passes once he gets his mitts on them. He’s solid but unfortunately he has priced himself out of Tampa. Someone will get a nice slot guy. Watson looks like a B.A. proto typical slot guy. Good luck Adam Humphries!

The good news is the Bucs get to turn a homegrown UDFA who was highly productive for 4 cheap years – into a 3rd round compensatory pick next year simply by letting some other team overpay him.
Its what good teams do. Nice to see tangible proof that GM Licht does indeed have a knack for spotting diamonds in the rough…
Perhaps we can also trade Cam Brate for a 3rd rd pick this year as well and draft our way out of this salary cap mess with only 5-11 back to back years to show for it….

Licht is a blatant fool if he doesn’t trade Jackson for the low, and resign Humphries with that money. Such would be ridiculous, senseless, and inexcusable.

I agree let Hump walk for the compensatory pick next year trade Desean and let Watson play the slot along with a vet like ex Cardinal John Brown. We need to fix defense mainly secondary and offensive line the rest will come together.

I’m with those who say we cannot afford a FA contract for a #3 receiver. I’m a fan, but we just have bigger needs right now.

Its a shame losing Humphries but a lot of his success has been built on working with Winston who has already had a history of not working with ‘A’ talent and making them into quality players (Humphries and Brate’. I’d back Winston to work with similar talent and elevate their play.

Pickgrin: Absolutely! I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment. Next man up, Justin Watson. He is sure-handed and has more upside/talent than Humphries. He isn’t as proven, but does fit more of the Arians mold of a slot-receiver size-wise. He also ran a low 4.4 40 and posted a 40+-inch vertical jump at his pro-day so he can stretch the field also. I say let Hump walk and gain probably a 3rd-rd compensatory-pick, while saving $10M.

Folks shouldn’t be too quick to jump on the Justin Watson train. He MAY very well be a suitable replacement for Hump, but we don’t know that at this point. In 12 games in 2018, Watson had 3 passes thrown to him; he caught ONE for 5 yards (Hump was targeted 105 times & caught 76 of those for 816 yds … pretty big difference). Watson got a grand total of 73 offensive snaps in 16 games; Humphries got 781 … over 10 times as many. Can Watson hold up for that many?
If Humphries can get $10 mil from someone, I’m glad for him … as long as it isn’t the Bucs shelling out the $$$. Bucs have too many other NEEDS to fill right now to pay a #3 slot WR $10 mil (could’ve gone for $7 mil, but $10 mil is too much for our CAP situation). Side bennie of getting a 3rd Rnd Comp pick would be nice, IF it actually happens.

Humphries is one player that far exceeded expectations. Jameis will miss his ability to stretch short passes into first downs. We are no longer in the position to keep him if he commands 10 Million. IMO, some of his production will have to made up by an all purpose back that can make plays with both his feet and pass catching ability. While I agree that Licht has done well in plucking players off other teams in midseason and UDFA, I want to look for dual purpose players when drafting and signing free agents. RB is one area where it looks like we missed on a dual purpose back. Also think any DE we sign should also be able to stop the run as well as pass rush.

That “Watson hasn’t done anything, bring back Hump” mentality would’ve kept Godwin on the bench. Hell, it would’ve caused Andy Reid to resign Alex Smith in Kansas City instead of handing the keys to Patriots Mahomes. Lol, okay I may be stretching it, but really I’m not completely. Watson was drafted specifically to replace Hump!!! SPECIFICALLY! Look at the receivers we had when we drafted him. DRAFTED! He wasn’t even a UDFA like Hump was. When you have one receiver’s contract expiring (Hump, #4 receiver) aaanndd you draft one in the 5th rd, that’s called a contingency plan

How many ball catchers do the Bucs need?
6 big time ones? Seems unlikely. Maybe 3-4 with a few more rookie contract role players. 1. Mike Evans 2. OJ Howard 3. Cameron Brate 4. Chris Goodwin.
Then they still have 5. Desean Jackson and don’t seem to want to get rid of him.
6. Adam Humphries would be nice, but there are only so many balls to go around and so many people on the field at one time.

Letting Adam get his money elsewhere also sends a very poor message to all FA’s and draft picks out there – Play your arse off and overachieve , be tough as nails when you get your head taken off , stay out of trouble and do everything asked of you , and have your skills ascending in the prime of your career , and the BUCS will let you leave. I just hope Adam stays , but if he goes , I pray he stays in the NFC South so he can torture the Glazers for years for their lack of vision in keeping him. Just wait until some muffed punts cost you a game or two that knocks you out of the playoffs , not to mention his catch rate is one of the highest in the league.

Hunter Renfrows college tape is better than Humps…now if he can transition that to nfl speed like Hump and be as reliable, then yea, spend a 4th on him…otherwise i see 5th or 6th…..Hump went undrafted.

Anyone who doesn’t care if Hump leaves is a complete dimwit. And I mean that in the most insulting way.
Our WR Corps will go from one of the most promising in the league to a ‘maybe’.
Evans we know is good. Godwin has appeared to be good, but we still don’t know that for sure. Watson is a complete unknown.
OJ Howard has proven to be injury prone. Camp is a pure red zone threat (and half of you want him gone too).
We NEED Hump here, whether TMax and his idiot cronies agree or not.

Realistically how much better is Humphries going to get?
His 2018 season he caught 76 balls for 816 yards and 5 TD’s. 10.7 Ypc.
So what will you get for 10 million? Maybe 85 balls for 900 yards and 7 TD’s. That’s not 10 million dollar stats. With Evans, Godwin, Howard and any real pass catching back Humphries most likely will not pass those numbers.
The Bucs have to let him walk at that price and use the money for positions that are of need.

I’d say cut Jackson and McCoy….23 Mill can go a long way in plugging alot of holes. One guy doesn’t want to be here and the other is past his prime. Save the cash and you can get younger and better.

What would Belichek and the Pats do? They’d let Hump walk, insert his replacement and then turn that 3rd round compensatory pick into another starter. It’s the Patriot way. It’s how they’ve built a dynasty in the salary cap era. Yeah Brady is a large reason as well but there have been other good QB’s.
