Awakening?
Reading the tea leaves and listening to the words of both Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and new Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians today at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis, it seems DeSean Jackson is not yet out the door
Both men expressed a desire to keep the malcontent wide receiver after the two had discussions with the speedy wideout.
In Jackson’s two years with the Bucs he has repeatedly thrown his quarterback, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, under the bus both privately and on national television, slept through meetings, sparred with coaches including former Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter, gotten into a hassle with another unnamed coach, blew off meetings for a card game with Swaggy Baker and destroyed a players’ Christmas display.
And that’s just what we know about.
But boys will be boys, according to Licht. What is in the past is in the past. Licht believes Jackson can still help the Bucs.
After Jackson spent Super Bowl Week in Atlanta saying he wants to play for the Rams and that he needs a veteran quarterback because he doesn’t need to practice, Joe asked Licht point-blank today why he believes a leopard will change his spots and why he believes Jackson will turn a new leaf after two years of trying to blow up the locker room.
“I have had some great conversations with him,” Licht said. “I know Bruce has too. I know James has a lot of respect for DeSean. There are a lot of things that happened behind closed doors that not everybody understands and knows the entire story. I like DeSean. I have a lot of respect for him. He’s a good football player.
“He has expressed that he would like to be back.”
When pressed if that is exactly what Jackson told him, Licht clarified, saying Jackson told him, “I like it here. I like what is going on.”
This guy Jackson is all over the map. Perhaps he figured out how he has become such a human hand grenade in a locker room, no other team will cough up $10 million a year for him, So all of a sudden the Bucs look a lot better (on his checking account balance)?
Jackson has done his best to get himself run from Tampa Bay. Now he wants to stay?

I have confidence in B. Arians and I think D. Jackson does too. He didn’t like Koetter, and I believe with a change of scheme he should be happy.
That being said, if we start losing again… Don’t expect him to work hard.

Didn’t BA say “No risk-it, No Biscuit”? Cut Djax and who do you replace his talent with because money don’t play football? Djax’s strengths are tailor-made for a Bruce Arians offense and everyone knows it. Money and tantrums aside, Djax has the ability to FLOURISH in this offense. I know it isn’t a popular perspective but if we want to make the playoffs, we NEED Djax’s skill set! He will keep a safety honest, deep, and backpedaling…..opens it up underneath for the run game and an OJ Howard!

I’ve never liked this player once, ever. He has been a colossal waste of FA spending and has not produced as expected. He has been a crappy Buccaneer.
I’ll still take him back for one more season but only because we are changing the offense. But I’m not taking him back if he don’t wanna be here. Can’t win with players who hate their jobs.
I expect Bruce to give him a take-it or leave-it proposition as long as he is willing to do all that’s asked of him. Practice & Games.
And if they bring back Jackson I expect him to produce and make a lot more explosive plays.

Biggest anti-Jameis thing he’s said was basically to ride the hot hand with Fitz. Then Fitz sucked lol.
The most infamous tweet he had last year – was responding to agree with someone that teams like the Falcons/(forgot who else may have been mentioned) would know HOW to use him better than the Bucs. It wasn’t about the QB.

And that Adam Humphries was the most reliable WR on the roster?
Look, all I’m saying is I see red flags. I’m not saying I won’t support Arians once things get rolling. I’m honestly hoping he pulls a Jon Gruden so far as wins.
But I also don’t have blinders on. Right now, I’m seeing a lot of reasons to be concerned.
However, to be fair, most of the things we are hearing are fed us by the media, or are assumptions that stretch the words of the staff. So things could be different than I fear.
I’m just saying that there are red flags. Those flags might turn green once we know more.
But I think keeping Jackson would be a HUGE mistake.

Come on, now. Dirk was a good coach. He actually improved this team in big ways, even if it did not show in wins.
And consider this: If he had fired Mike Smith sooner and hired a better defensive coordinator, we could have won a lot more games. So yeah, his loyalty is a fault…but its also a plus too in other areas.
And no one can deny that he gave us the best offense in Bucs history, even better than Jon Gruden’s offense.

The problem is this team is worse when DJax is in the game. I don’t see how Bruce can watch the game film and not see DJax sulking and lack of effort.
Just watched The Gaints game last night when Jameis came in mid way through the 3rd quarter and lead the team to 4 TDs. On the last potentially winning drive DJax show no effort to make a play on a long ball that ended the game. Please don’t bring this malcontent back.

It’s almost impossible to project success for free agents too.
That’s why the biggest key is to keep the good ones you get……..same goes with coaches.

Bonzai – Baker wasn’t a huge bust, he was being paid backup defensive lineman money. He’s paid only slightly more than the worthless 4th DE from the Bears that the Bucs signed who did even less than Baker. To call someone a bust, they needed to have been a valuable asset in the first place.
Also, no, D-Jax isn’t a bust either. Alvin Harper was a bust, but no, D-Jax is not a bust.
Also Hump is 4th on the depth chart for a reason. Evans, Godwin, D-Jax, OJ and Brate are all more important in the receiving game than Hump, who gets all those easy underneath passes because of all those guys above him on the depth chart who teams have to cover first. I’d keep Hump around if possible, I don’t dislike the guy, but to say he’s the “most reliable” WR? Come on – when he lined up against top corners he disappears, he can’t get open. When he’s 4th on the depth chart and going up against 4th corners, LBs and backup safeties, he’s a mismatch. Also you have to deal with Hump fumbling games away like he did in Buffalo and like he tried to do against Cleveland. The Hump hype is ridiculous and doesn’t take into account his place on the roster and why he gets to run wide open underneath and make all those easy catches (and certainly he made plenty of hard catches as well to be fair). Anywho if we lose him I’m not really worried, I think Bobo, if he doesn’t talk his way off the team, can step right into that spot and provide probably 95% of the play that Hump does at a much lower cost, and Bobo is a much better returner as well.

Hump hype is not ridiculous. If your eyes work look at a stat sheet since you seem to have forgotten how many plays he makes.
I’ll just assume reliable is a typo on your end if you don’t think he is.
And get off the #4 and depth chart junk. That’s just something to look at for fans but doesn’t matter for what Hump does……..That’s because he was our #1 slot receiver. He has his own job for the team. I agree he would struggle against top corners but nobody is ever going to ask him to line up outside(at least they shouldn’t). WR depth chart doesn’t matter because if your outside receiver ever gets injured you wouldn’t ask Hump to take his spot
You would use your bench and keep Hump right where he is still getting mismatches. Depth Chart is irrevelant.
Hump brings a specific skillset to the table. Sorry if you don’t like the skills he posesses but they do exist and he does things that a lot of WRs cannot do. He’s one of the best in the game and what he does and that’s why he is gonna make a fat contract.

him firing smitty wouldnt have mattered….his inability to develop players who werent pass catchers did him in….players like spence, benenoch, rojo have talent but were never developed….
and you jugde an offense by points not by yards…dirk put up huge yardage numbers but could never find in the endzone….
hue jackson improved the browns in big ways too….the had a ton of draft picks which allowed him to add a ton of talent…..
but just like dirk, he didnt win enough….

JimmyJack – We’ve seen Hump play against starting corners and he disappears, he can’t get open. His value is because he’s way down the depth chart, and as he moves up that depth chart he becomes less and less valuable. It’s really simple, he has good quickness, but lacks speed and size, and thus he can’t be your #2 WR for example without grinding the offense to a complete halt. So yes, where he is on your depth chart is important since if you have a bunch of players who are worse than Hump on the field the other team will put their top guys on Hump to shut him down, and they will shut him down.
Hump’s value is related to being #4 on the depth chart. At #3 on the depth chart he’s worth less than he is as a #4.
I don’t even dislike Hump, I’m just not a blind fanboy who thinks he’s more than he is. Hump is a good WR playing in space with good hands, who will fumble away a game each year. He’ll also have some great punt returns… in the preseason. He’s a great blanket player for Winston who clearly loves throwing to him and he’s great at that, but the question is how much is a player like that worth? Also how easily can that player be replaced? Personally I think you try to keep Hump, but if someone is going to offer him $7m or more, then you say darn it, and put Bobo in his place, and I personally think Bobo can do almost all the same things.
Also, yes, I know Hump can go to the Pats, play in space, and rack up some good stats. But I also know the Pats are going to pay Hump $7m+ a year when they can get someone to do that same thing for $3m a year.

Hump and Godwin BOTH played in all 16 games for the past two years…something DJAX hasn’t done for six years. They both had more production than he did over the past two seasons.
DJAX has worn out his welcome wherever he’s been…simply Wikipedia him and read his season summaries…missed practices…holdouts…and then the stuff he’s pulled here.
I’m no NDOG in terms of JW worship but the lack of connection is not on JW. DJAX doesn’t practice…JW had no problem hooking up with FIVE other targets. If five guys are successful and one isn’t why would you go to the QB.
Fitzmagic had a few good games with him but when JW was benched DJAX was no more effective than he was with JW! JW haters point out to lack of arc and accuracy on the deep ball. Why then did Fitz lose his magic. Could it be that NFL DC’s quickly wised up after those first few games and made sure they accounted for DJAX with a safety?
Bottom line…if 5 targets can catch for JW and one can’t…how is he worth ten million? If two guys on the team…Hump and Godwin both play full seasons and produce more catches and yardage than DJAX who hasn’t played a full season in over five years (his age?) why don’t they get the ten million split between them instead of DJAX.
In his first few years when he was a Pro Bowl player at both WR and Punt returner he had true value…making his other transgressions more bearable. He’s no longer that player and he’s nowhere near worth ten million! It’s the the one area we do not have a need along with QB. Two spots we don’t have to worry about if we resign Hump who at this point is a better “value” than DJAX whose best years are behind him.

Bucs’ fans know exactly what went on because (tada) DJax told us everything we needed to know. He really didn’t want to be here, and by his actions he quit on the team. Dear Jason: THAT is the whole story right there.
DJax got 424 yds & 3 TDs receiving in the first 4 games (all with Fitz BTW). In the remaining 8 games that he played in, he had 350 yds & 1 TD (mostly with Jameis but some with Fitz). Forget the QBs for a moment. As the season rolls along, most CBs & Safeties typically get smarter & coverage improves (and yes, even on the Bucs). Maybe DJax needed to step up HIS game instead of whining about others.
I’d rather release him & use the $10 mil to ‘buy’ a veteran CB who can start outside (and maybe even have a little left over to put towards some of our other NEEDS). Salary CAP dollars seem to be scarce & Bucs have lots of NEEDS to still address. We can survive quite well without DJax, but we’ll have a repeat of 2018 unless we FIX our defense, our OLine, our RBs & our S/Ts.

Take the #2 WR #3#4 out of it cause that’s not revelant. I am talking about slot receiver vs wideout. Call them whatever number you want it don’t matter.
Hump shouldn’t be asked to work the sidelines. That’s all I’m saying. Heck maybe he goes to a new team and proves me wrong………..But it doesn’t matter what # Hump is on the depth chart he should always be a slot guy. You never ask that guy to line up outside vs top corners because he is not good at that role. You use a depth player outside and keep Hump where he is at. Depht Chart should never come into play. Hump plays the slot no matter what.
Hump is not worth what his depth chart say he is worth slot WR money cause that’s what he is. Even if he goes to a team where he is #1 or #2 on their depth he should still be playing the slot position.
Just don’t never forget that Hump posesses a specific set of skills. He is on of the tops in the game at it too whether you wanna acknowledge it or not.

JimmyJack – My point on the depth chart is, as I said, if the Bucs had WR’s that are worse than Hump on the field, many (but not all) teams will move their top corners to cover top WRs, that that happens, Hump is completely shut down. We’ve seen it. Hump is valuable because he’s down the depth chart, if he went to a team with no talent at WR, like the Redskins, then it wouldn’t matter if he’s in the slot or not, teams would match up their top corners against him and he wouldn’t do much. That’s why, in a salary cap world, you can’t pay him a huge amount of money because you’re still going to have to give Godwin his big money deal in a couple of years, and build the rest of the team.
Again, I don’t dislike Hump, the Bucs should try to keep him, but they have to do so at a cost that makes sense, and to me that’s probably closer to $5m than $6m, which would put him firmly in WR #3 money, which I think is more than fair.

It’s just like you initially said on how Hump thrives off matchups. You’re spot on with that. So if you got Hump pulling coverage inside you creating better matchups for the sidelines. Now your backup whose taking on the #1 or 2 role doesn’t have to compete against top corners.
Either way your creating a mismatch. The key is to have players who can take advantage of their mismatches………which is exactly what Hump does.

Not saying Hump is worth 8-10 million. Simply saying that neither is DJAX. 10 million is grossly overpaying. I’m not denigrating DJAX’s talent as much as pointing out that he has dropped off with age. In his first three years returning punts and running the ball effectively as well as being a top WR he was a top talent. He can no longer stay healthy. He’s the wrong side of 30 do we think that will improve? Or is that perhaps a reason why he never fights for the ball?
At least you respond with some facts…kudos to you. But we’ll have to simply agree to disagree on the value of 3 big plays.
I do not know how many times ME13 or Hump caught first down passes to keep the sticks moving.
I just think missing six games over the past two years and overall production decline make him unworthy of ten million. Not calling him a “bad” player just not a good value at 10 million. Mix in all his off field attitude and I just don’t see him on this team. Again we don’t have a serious need in “weapons for Jameis” Trade DJAX if possible…not likely…whatever dump his 10 million liability and reinvest it into the trenches.

He has to play “good soldier”. Playing nice is in DJaxs’ best interest. He either convinces the Bucs to keep him or convinces another team to trade for him. Getting cut is his worst case scenario. He wants a trade but he’ll stay if he has to.

My point is that DJax lack of respect for inept coaching staff that did not use him properly, among other coaching failures, led to attitude problems.
If he returns punts, which I think he will under Arians, and takes Humphries spot, and Jameis is coached up, whih I also think will happen with Arians, then he is worth the money because of his playmaking ability.
I don’t think Arians would work with a “problem” player. His track record is too impressive.
