Trading DeSean Jackson
February 23rd, 2019Anyone who follows Bucs malcontent wide receiver DeSean Jackson on Instagram knows he was living large this week.
Back in his old stomping grounds of Los Angeles, Jackson, a hardcore Los Angeles Lakers fan, not only was sitting front row at a Rockets-Lakers game, but Jackson was sitting at the end of the Lakers’ bench chatting up dudes as they were warming up or getting ready to enter the game.
Could one reason for Jackson’s good mood be that he knows he’s about to be sprung loose from the shackles of playing for the Bucs?
In an appearance on NFL Network, Gregg Rosenthal explained that he expects a flurry of trades in the NFL to be consummated next week at the combine in Indianapolis, which begins Wednesday.
(Joe knows a loyal reader will try to correct him here. Yes, the combine begins Wednesday with various general managers and coaches speaking to the thousands of assembled media types from around the nation that will descend upon frosty downtown Indianapolis. Thursday, offensive linemen, quarterbacks and running backs will have their press conferences. Other position players will hold scheduled press conferences as well as the combine progresses through the weekend. Now when Joe refers to the combine, he is not referring to the TV show most NFL fans associate with the combine. What that schedule is, Joe has no idea and frankly doesn’t give a rat’s rear end about.)
And the No. 1 trade Rosenthal is expecting next week in Indianapolis? That would be Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht shipping off Jackson to some naive sucker NFL club.
You can watch Rosenthal’s explanation in the NFL Network video below.

Nothing less than a 2nd rd 2019 pick for Djax Licht!

Kobe hopes Jason Gump comes back from the combines still with our #1 draft pick”

Now Gregg Rosenthal is one worth citing and basing a credible article on.
NOT any fool at Bleacher Report at all, NOT Yahoo Sports at all.
For those who weren’t aware (maybe many are), Rosenthal is a quality, credible, professional journalist that was hand-picked by Florio in the very early stages of PFT, and worked there dutifully for many years building solid sources, staying in his lane, learning how to build his craft around quality journalists under the PFT/Rotoworld blended umbrella. He’s now employed at NFL Media. Who one cites, and doesn’t cite purposefully, determines the organizational credibility and standing in the sports journalistic community, and whether or not any of the peers in that community, actually take one’s “site” seriously. Period.
It is nice to hear that Gregg feels that DJax’s contract is still very palatable in the landscape of today’s WR contracts, thus maybe indeed making a late 4th, early 5th round pick obtainable from the likes of Philly, San Fran, Rams or whomever else may want him.
Boy….this Licht character, sure is putting a lot of weight on this year’s Combine proceedings (and subsequent draft proceedings) for the shaping of the 2019 roster and beyond, based on his EXTREME LACK of action in this offseason to date. Thinks he’s gonna be such a slick Rick up there in Indy. Well, we’ll see, and we’ll get to analyze the hell outta it!!
Go Bucs!

I want TWO more articles on Jackson today and one on Sunday.
February 23rd, 2019 at 10:44 am
If we could somehow get a 5th round pick for Djax, I would be ecstatic.
February 23rd, 2019 at 10:50 am
Scotty,
DONE!
and dONE!
February 23rd, 2019 at 10:52 am
Great & interesting post, Stout. That was a good read.
February 23rd, 2019 at 10:54 am
Yeah, lets get a 5th rd pick for Djax and select who……Jack Cichy! We’d be a much better team then! And have $11 million to sign Swaggy Baker’s little brother to replace GMC afterwards! Woohoo!!! Fire the cannons! Problems solved!

Thanks @BucsFIRE….
Nice to have a couple fans along the way although any response is perfectly fine, and feel to some degree that it’s our (all respondent’s here) duty to “add” to the conversation that occurs here on this here site, not merely take things at face value or agree for agreement’s sake, cause as well all we all know, taking things at face value is mighty risky, and frankly there’s often more…information out there.
I’ll make it a point to pay more attention to your posts going forward sir.
Go Bucs!
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:00 am
WHY couldn’t Winston and Djax connect the way Fitz did with DJax??? ok , I stop living in the past and say trade DJax ..Don’t blame DJax for wanting a more accurate qb for his game.
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:00 am
*cause as we all know….good lord.
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:03 am
Kobe Faker and Stout Gospel have this subject boxed, nailed and put to rest. Thanks guys! Can we get back to something worthwhile? Huh, Joe?
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:03 am
It seems….lol…that @ncbucsfan….somehow missed @tmax’s comment to him/her in a thread here yesterday, regarding @tmax’s opinion of his/her standing….on this here site. I;m sure many did not miss those comments.

February 23rd, 2019 at 11:16 am
Buh–Bye.
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:17 am
Winston and DJax have trouble connecting because of the arc of JW’s deep pass. More on a line and less of a an arc. When you throw on a line and aren’t on target, there is no chance for a receiver to run under the ball like there is on an arc. The longer the pass, the more precise the throw must be. Everyone knows JW isn’t the most accurate passer in the NFL and DJAX prefers to run to the deep ball. That’s why DJAX and JW have oroblems connecting on the deep pass.
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:18 am
The Aguayo pick left me skeptical, and the signing of D-Jax, while making zero calls to calais Campbell is my tipping point with Licht. To me, not even calling Calais Campbell, rather signing DJax and Fatty 🌴 Baker is INEXCUSABLE.
Also, I like the. Ea pick and trade down, just not a fan of MJ Stewart, or RoJo. I can think of a few other directions I’d go with those picks. Kerryon Johnso over RoJo. Donte Jackson, Isaiah Oliver or Darius Guice over MJ Stewart.
In conclusion, Licht is worse than Dominik and that is inexcusable.
2019 is a big year for answers: Jameis and Licht?
Koetter took the fall, no one else left to blame but the #1 pick QB is his 5th year, and the inept GM thus far.
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:19 am
Look at the arc on Fitz deep passes vs. JW’s deep passes and you’ll clearly see what I’m referring to above.
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:21 am
ncbucsfan … “Nothing less than a 2nd rd 2019 pick for Djax Licht!” Good luck with that. Other GMs know that we NEED DJax’s $10 mil, and that we’ll cut him if we can’f find some sucker to trade him to. I think it’s called leverage. We’ve got none.
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:30 am
Again.
I’m hoping Gruden does not listen to mayock and takes a flyer on Desean Jackson.
He would be closer to LA at least for a year. Vegas ain’t far from LA either. Plus DJax likes the raiders swag. They love their villains . Correction I meant to say the “Joes villain “
And the raiders have 0 receivers worth a spit that I can think of.
Cmon Gruden.
Think raiders might be our best shot. Gruden wanted to draft him years ago for Bucs. Dude still has speed. And Gruden loves his old men veterans
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:33 am
SteveK & Defense Rules right on… this nincompoot of a GM sitting at one buc had better have had all personnel power taken from him at this point. Send him to England to scout midfielders for the soccer team, he is better suited for that job
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:33 am
Goodnight little darlin’ D-Jax goodnight!
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:39 am
@Bird…
Could be OAK and Gruden you’re right, hadn’t thought about all that, good idea!!
And @Bucs Guy….
See what you’re saying there on the arc, plus maybe Fitz by nature is a little more immediately decisive as a person/passer than Winston. Jameis liked to gun it at the last minute at FSU too, relying on his arm strength just to get it there at the last minute.
Go Bucs!
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:54 am
Trade his butt
February 23rd, 2019 at 11:58 am
It would be cool if instead of “malcontent”, Joe would start introducing Jackson as “three-time Pro Bowler, multiple NFL record-holder”… You know, trade value.
February 23rd, 2019 at 12:00 pm
Oh, and “speedster”,..add that too.
February 23rd, 2019 at 12:06 pm
Bird,
Great suggestion with Oakland. I could definitely see that. What if we could swap first round picks and move from 5 to 4? I would take that in a heartbeat!
February 23rd, 2019 at 12:06 pm
@Defense Rules: Pessimism!! NOBODY outside of One Buc KNOWS what type of money we NEED! Until they have to, which is well after the draft and into training camp, we don’t NEED to free up money in order to sign free agents. Trust me BA has a list of cut candidates post free-agency AND post-draft!! We don’t even HAVE to trade or cut Djax so what are you talking about leverage! Pure speculation with a basis shaped out of the media, Djax dreams and Twitter (not exactly credible sources). I’m a negotiator by trade/occupation so trust me it’s speculative to assume leverage resides with another GM (they can suck too and give us that and more, you dont know their motives, smh). Maybe we extend Jameis for cap relief ($10 mil), maybe GMC restructures, maybe we don’t want to keep Hump or Kwon, maybe Donovan Smith resigns at a hometown contract that gives cap relief in the initial years. Bottom line is you DO NOT KNOW what type of money we have or need and neither does another GM..GTFOH!!
February 23rd, 2019 at 12:07 pm
Ncbucsfan
You’re dreaming about a 2nd. And a 5th sounds about what they will get. Gota factor in everything, especially salary and situation. Everyone knows he is a goner that lowers value as does top $. And the 5th can be used to move around in the draft doesnt have to be used as a 5th round selection. I’d prefer if Licht could get a player for him.
February 23rd, 2019 at 12:08 pm
Jim,
One Joe brought up DJax and the HOF. I think, if our QB could deliver him the ball, when frequently open, then DJax would be flourishing.
It is frustrating to watch Jackson run down the field (wide the hell open) and Jameis would throw a line drive (off target) for an incompletion. I don’t expect Jameis to be perfect, but the deep ball acumen to DJax was disappointing.
February 23rd, 2019 at 12:16 pm
DJax trade value was never higher than just before the trade deadline….Licht .if he makes a trade will be 2-3 rounds later than he could have gotten last fall….
February 23rd, 2019 at 12:16 pm
Steve k
Was thinking that same thing. If one of the big 3 there , I would do it. One spot move and get rid of his salary.
Gruden already said those picks may be used on player trades at draft. Although they said younger players but still raiders have no receivers. Raiders move back 1 spot.
I am hoping cardinals take Murray 1. I know that seems like pipe dream but His style fits Kingsbury system perfectly Kingsbury loves him. If Murray has amazing pro day then look out đź‘€
February 23rd, 2019 at 12:44 pm
The sooner DJax is gone – the better.
With his contract being $10M and only for 1 year – a 5th rd pick is about the most that could be hoped for in trade I’d say – if that even.
February 23rd, 2019 at 12:57 pm
Ncbucsfan … Pessimism? How about Reality? And you’ve got me wondering. If you’re a negotiator by trade, have you been the one advising Jason Licht for these past 5 years? GTFOH back at ya.
February 23rd, 2019 at 1:05 pm
DJax Sabatoged Jameis and the Bucs. Trade him for a box of jock straps.

February 23rd, 2019 at 1:11 pm
@Darin: Negotiating 101. ALWAYS ask for more than you may actually get, you just may get it. How desperate someone may be for a deep-threat WR is always TBD! Ya’ll armchair GMs kill me! Didn’t Amari Cooper just fetch a 1ST RD PICK from Dallas? Didn’t he? And dont give me that youth crap because he is 24yrs old. He hadn’t accomplished crap in Oakland. I guarantee nobody or their value scale said he was worth a 1st rd pick, yet it happened! And didn’t 30-yr old Golden Tate get traded to the Eagles for a 3rd RD PICK? Didnt he? AND the Eagles knew it may be a rental because he was in the last yearnof his contract!!! And ya’ll talking about “maybe we can get a 5th RD PICK for DeSean Jackson, that’s all ncbucsfan”, lmbo!! Again GTFOH!! I guess loser teams breed loser fans that embrace a losing mindset. I refuse!!! Swing for the damn fences Licht and again I say “nothing less than a 2nd Licht!”
****I’d settle for a 3rd for you morons that assume that statement is a firm stance, smh! I can’t……
February 23rd, 2019 at 1:12 pm
@ Defense Rules……read above said comment…..goes for you too, smh!!!
February 23rd, 2019 at 1:22 pm
Now DJax is the reason for another 5-11 season. It wasn’t inept coaches, a damn near record-setting bad defense, or a impotent run game……..it was Djax, smh!! I swear ya’ll need to grow a pair, get a brain, stop being media headline sheep, and call it what it is, not what the headlines tell you. All of the said reasons is why we were 5-11, not DeSean Jackson!!! Could he and Jameis be better together? ABSOLUTELY!! But who in the hell is better to replace him with? I’ll wait!!…………………EXACTLY, CRICKETS!!
Keeping Djax allows us to not overpay for Humphries this year and groom Justin Watson another year…..who I am very high on, without losing a legit deep-threat. How many times did we see Belichik get a player that some team was crying about being bad for their team, and they go play for him and flourish? Well isn’t Bruce Arians supposed to be that guy? Well let him keep Djax and get the most out of this clear talent!! Stop being sheep! I’m trying to get ya’ll mind right! Lol
February 23rd, 2019 at 1:22 pm
SteveK Says:
“It is frustrating to watch Jackson run down the field (wide the hell open) and Jameis would throw a line drive (off target) for an incompletion.”
Equally disappointing to see ME Jax give little or no effort to adjust or fight for any ball that is not right on his hands. We see WRs make incredible catches selling out for the ball every Sun – this guy has had trouble with every team he’s been on. Go watch the ATL (at ray Jay) game from last year and watch Godwin haul one in on his finger tips. . . JW had no problem hitting him
February 23rd, 2019 at 1:25 pm
The only way we get a decent trade for DJAX is if multiple teams want him.
That could create a mini bidding war in terms of interest. Otherwise will simply wait for the Bucs to cut him and he becomes an FA.
Amari Cooper has four years left at 5.6 million…just about half of what DJAX is scheduled to make and with some years left on it.
Golden Tate earned 3.6 million about a third of DJAX but he was rental.
If a team in a win now mode has a real need at WR and needs speed and a couple more have the same need that perhaps can provoke a bit of a bidding in trade value for DJAX. Otherwise why not simply wait for him to become an UFA.
DJAX would be viewed as a rental by most teams…similar to Tate but not like Amari Cooper.
February 23rd, 2019 at 1:30 pm
@BucNole: I agree. I have seen Djax on multiple occasions not sell out for the ball. He and Jameis have not been on the same page but I think they both know why now that Djax publicly pulled an Allen Iverson talking about how serious Jameis was about “Practice”!
February 23rd, 2019 at 2:05 pm
Bucnole,
Good point. Jackson didn’t sell out, but it does not take away from the fsct that he was wide the he’ll open. Example: weeks 1 and 2 when Jameis was suspended, DJax was leading NFL in YPC.
Point being, DJAx is a primadonna, and did not sellout for the ball. Sure, but the man was WIDE THE HELL OPEN AND THE NUMBER ONE DREFT PICK AT QV COULD NOT HIT HIM FOR THE BETTER PART OF TWO YEARS.
February 23rd, 2019 at 2:08 pm
Sorry for my typos.
I just don’t understand why our QB can’t hit the best deep ball receiver in the game today, a receiver whose had success with several QBs: McNabb, Vick, Cousins, etc. I expect Jameis to be at least as good as those guys.
We shall see in 2019. That’s why I want to see the Bucs sign LeVeon Bell. Give Jameis all the weapons, the QV whisperer, and the best RB in the game today. Give Jameis that, and I expect playoffs. No excuses! Year five time to rise!
February 23rd, 2019 at 2:11 pm
To say that I would be ecstatic to receive a 5th round pick for Djax implies that I would also be more than ecstatic if we received an even higher pick…..
We only have 6 picks and little cap space…..so, any pick and the $10 mil will help.
As for using the money and the pick wisely…..well, that’s another subject altogether.
You have to ask……was Djax worth a 5th rounder & $10 mil last year?……I think not…..and it matters not whether Winston is at fault because he will be here next year…..so…..Bye, Bye…..Djax
February 23rd, 2019 at 2:21 pm
Giving away elite talent for future camp cut or practice squad player-
Yeah, that will improve the team
February 23rd, 2019 at 2:22 pm
Can trades be completed next week?
February 23rd, 2019 at 2:33 pm
I’m sorry Ms. Jackson…..
February 23rd, 2019 at 2:38 pm
Was at one Buc today at DJAX locker was full didn’t look like a guy who feels he’s leaving the team
February 23rd, 2019 at 2:57 pm
@Alanbucsfan…. EXACTLY!
February 23rd, 2019 at 4:27 pm
@DR…
Your 12:57pm post was classic!! Nice. Handed the noisy distraction some piece there…
Go Bucs!
February 23rd, 2019 at 4:27 pm
The Buccs don’t deserve Jax. The dude was averaging 21 yards per catch during the 1st half of the season, unstoppable as usual. Unexpectedly, he was no longer part of the game plan. Was it an attempt to prevent him from reaching contact incentives, Winston, or an idiot OC? In any invent, he didn’t see the ball as much as he should have. All the best to D-Jax!
February 23rd, 2019 at 5:21 pm
Trade him to the Steelers for Bell. We need an RB
February 23rd, 2019 at 5:40 pm
pick or no pick just get him outta here he can sleep in some other teams meetings!
February 23rd, 2019 at 5:51 pm
If we can get JPP for a 3rd round pick them I think someone will give up a 3rd rounder for Jackson. Even on a one year rental someone out there will be willing to trade. The Rams and New England just got third round compensatory picks. They might trade. If Jackson doesn’t want to be a Buccaneer you might as well get something for him. I wouldn’t let him leave for anything less than a third. I might consider swapping places in the first round with the Raiders but even then I would want the Raiders to throw in a late round pick. Just my thoughts. Go Bucs!
February 23rd, 2019 at 6:41 pm
Haha! StoutGospel has assumed the role of shepherd….how fitting? Lame
February 23rd, 2019 at 7:30 pm
@Joe…. “couldbone reason be for Jackson’s good mood he knows he is about to be freed from the shackles of playing for the Bucs”….????? What the HELL Joe??? Are you a Bucs fan or aren’t you? What the hell do you mean “shackles of playing for the Bucs”?? WE SHOULD BE HAPPY WE ARE SOON TO BE FREE OF THIS WHINY LITLLE PISS ANT!
February 23rd, 2019 at 7:38 pm
@Kobe Faker BUC YEA HES GONNA OUTSMART ANOTHER TEAM JUST LIKE HE WHEN BURGLARY OF JPP IN BROAD DAYLIGHT!IF THEEE IS ONE THINGA LICHT IS GOOD AT IS GETTING DRAFT COLLATERAL! HE’LL GET A 3RD OR IF LADY LUCK IS WITH HIM A 4TH & 7TH.
February 24th, 2019 at 1:19 am
Stout,
The idea that Fitz gets the ball out earlier is supported by the stats. Fitz was up to a half a second earlier than Winston. Also, He throws the ball up and let’s DJAX run under it. Winston tends to drive the ball flatter which makes an adjustment difficult. Kirk Cousins had success throwing the ball this way.
Side note, nice to see you have moved away from ad hoim attacks to more content driven posts. The more people do this the better the site becomes imo.
February 24th, 2019 at 6:12 am
I would be happy with next year’s 7th round draft pick.
February 24th, 2019 at 9:44 am
Another fail by Licht….terrible signing and then held on too long to the point everyone knows we want to unload him. Much better value last year when a team could squeeze a 1 1/2 yr from Jackson. Nobody is trading for a 1 yr WR at $10 million….Its dumb. Licht can talk all that “no risk it no biscuit” stuff but he’s scared to pull the trigger on any talent because he has no faith in his ability to hit on his draft picks. It kind of looks awful when you keep cutting your draft picks and free agent splashes over and over because none of them are working out. It looks even worse when they go elsewhere and have success which I believe is his biggest fear. I think the Bucs know Jackson is a weapon another team will max out.
February 24th, 2019 at 11:39 am
trade DJax straight up for Steelers’ Antonio Brown. See how it goes.
February 24th, 2019 at 12:29 pm
I would take a 7th rounder for him if it’s to a truly crappy team.
