Dirk Koetter Implies Communication With Jameis Was Lacking
February 21st, 2019America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is no Matt Ryan. And perhaps former Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter needed Jameis to be more like the former NFL MVP and four-time Pro Bowler.
Koetter met with Atlanta media for the first time yesterday since he was re-hired as Falcons offensive coordinator.
They went easy on him. Nobody asked about the Bucs and why he failed as head coach.
There was plenty of chatter about Ryan, though, and Koetter dropped this take that sure seemed like a minor knock on Jameis after spending four years coaching him.
“One of the things I like best about Matt is every quarterback I’ve ever worked with, they can all tell you what they like. What Matt can do, he did it when I was here the first time, he can tell you what he doesn’t like and why,” Koetter said. “And just one of the things I’ve learned over the years is I might think something is the greatest idea ever known to man. If the quarterback doesn’t like it, it’s probably not going to go on Sundays. So I think Matt will always have a huge impact on what our final game plan is when we get to that point in the season.”
Of course, this goes both ways. If Koetter wasn’t getting Jameis to explain what he doesn’t like and why, then shame on Koetter and his staff. That’s their job to find out. And if Jameis couldn’t communicate what he didn’t like effectively, then shame on him.
New Bucs head coach Bucco Bruce Arians said recently (and Joe will write more about it another day) that if his QB doesn’t like a play late in a week of pregame preparation, then it is removed from the play sheet immediately and without hesitation.
Hopefully, Jameis will communicate freely and clearly with Arians on plays he dislikes. And perhaps Koetter’s words might serve as a heads-up to Arians to push Jameis extra hard to reveal all his opinions.

Koetter dude your an offensive coordinator lol that’s just pathetic. Maybe it was the second rate coaches you hired buddy
February 21st, 2019 at 1:00 pm
This is make or break year for jameis because it seems there was also a communication problem when he was at FSU with jimbo
February 21st, 2019 at 1:05 pm
Some call it a “communication problem.” Others say Jameis is just not very smart…
February 21st, 2019 at 1:08 pm
Hard to communicate when you’re eating so many finger “W’s”!!
February 21st, 2019 at 1:12 pm
Anyway, like I was sayin’, shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried.
February 21st, 2019 at 1:12 pm
crabman and Buba Gump will communicate just fine (thats Byron for those not in the know)
February 21st, 2019 at 1:16 pm
Wonder why Fitz got along so well with DJax and Winston has not …maybe the same with coaches and Winston… I know, Everybody will makes excuses for the bucs qb
February 21st, 2019 at 1:16 pm
This goes to the heart of Winston’s own recent comments about doing things his own way. Believe him Joe.
February 21st, 2019 at 1:20 pm
Jimbo and Winston did not have a communication problem. If anything the media tried to imply Winston talked back to Jimbo too much. Anyone who watched FSU would know Jimbo and Winston was always talking to each other.
Plain to see koetter and winston did not like each other. Example if your wife’s family owns the business you work for no matter what happens the family will always side with the wife. Koetter failed to realize the Glazers would never side with him over a QB drafted number 1 overall. Good luck Koetter except when we play.
February 21st, 2019 at 1:22 pm
WinSTUNNED is the “hardest worker” and first to the building and last to leave…for 4 years now and has not improved at all. He’ll never get better. The Bucs have to accept this and prepare to move on in 2020..

A ton of great examples as to why we have the dumbest fan base in sports in here.
February 21st, 2019 at 1:36 pm
You guys don’t know where to point a finger … blaming koetter … koetter is one hell Igbo a coordinator… he I said no to head coach material…to knock him for the teams lack of success is just ignorant … no wonder why we have the dumbest fans in the NFL … you guys look for a finger to point and it’s always towards the dudes who end up leaving Tampa knowing damn well the problem is still under the roof
February 21st, 2019 at 1:39 pm
I’m case you guys wonder what I was saying before my phone was edited … I was saying koetter is one hell of a coordinator and not head coach material… when he lights up Tampa with his offense this coming year I’ll be waiting to see what you all say then
February 21st, 2019 at 1:41 pm
No kidding, when a player does not listen to his coaches, and goes it on his own. Then yes there is a communication problem. Go figure.
Go Bucs!
February 21st, 2019 at 1:54 pm
The rivalry vs the Falcons has just been turned up another notch. Beating Koetter and knocking Matt Ryan around sure would be sweet. They haven’t recovered from the 28-3 gag job in the Super Bowl…wouldn’t be surprised to see a complete house cleaning at season’s end in The ATL.
February 21st, 2019 at 1:59 pm
No problem with communication at FSU? Like when Jimbo told Jameis you are not dressing for a game and Jameis came out in his uniform?
February 21st, 2019 at 2:07 pm
Yea uh so futz got a long with coaches for about 3 games before he went all winstoned and started throwing picks too so stop making excuses for futz getting benched for Winston. Dude has one foot out of the nfl and is an elderly veteran so of course he’s seen everything compared to a 4 year guy who’s 24. Some are you have really pathetic mentalities and having trouble seeing from the couch. Really weird for Gruden and BA to be high on Winston but fans think they know more

it’s not the fan base that has embarrassing themselves on the field for nearly 2 decades….. this team and its minor league roster with no heart has been a complete embarrassment and that is solely on their sorry arses, not the fans.

“Implies Communication With Jameis Was Lacking”….translation…numbskull would not follow instructions/play called and was a loose cannon
February 21st, 2019 at 2:20 pm
the entire staff didnt know how to “communicate” with the team…..
how many times have we heard, “communication” was the reason why the defense was so trash…..
im calling BS on dirk….once again dirk isnt being accountable…..blaming the QB instead of taking responsibility….
i cant wait for bowles to shut down that outdated 4vert scheme….

some of yall need to wake up….yall acting like listen not listening to dirk caused dirk to get fired….the writing was on the wall after the 2017 season….
no run game
retaining smitty
not developing players that arent pass catchers
are the top reasons why dirk was sent packing….not because he didnt “communicate” with dirk…..
plus fitz played just as bad at times so i guess fitz wasnt “communicating” either….lol….
#REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!
February 21st, 2019 at 2:28 pm
Normally I would give the benefit of the doubt to the coach….but in this case Koetter simply made too many mistakes…..his judgement is in question.
I can recall him admitting to throwing a challenge flag when he knew he had no timeouts left……now that is telling….
February 21st, 2019 at 2:28 pm
Winston’s problem is he thinks he can hero-ball his way into making anything work.

We all know he was a good coordinator not a hc. Unfortunately he was our hc. And a terrible one. I wish koetter success and am damn glad he’s gone. Now watch the success this team has with a real HC. Then get back to us.
February 21st, 2019 at 2:52 pm
Thats funny Dirk because when.jameis audibled out of a play because hebdidnt like what ue saw you and Monken both criticized him for doing so. Jameis was not given freedom to read defenses and make calls. He was also stuck with your little Tim Allen santa clause lookalike booger eating worst defensive coordinator butt buddy Smittys defense putting him in a hole to dig out of every Sunday. And what happened? Realist and one other guy blamed him for his interceptions every week while ghe rest of us patiently waited for Dirk to pull his head out of Mike smiths ass and fix things.
Glad we finally have a REAL head coach to get these things fixed
February 21st, 2019 at 2:53 pm
I guess Head Coach Koetter did not know how to talk “jive” with the qb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 21st, 2019 at 2:53 pm
Hahahaha. What a joke. This guy was the coach yet his QB is telling him what plays to run. Jameis finally stopped listening to Koetter and said he started using his old own swag to win games and I’m pretty sure he said that was after week 6 when he looked much more swaggy.
February 21st, 2019 at 2:54 pm
“for 4 years now and has not improved at all.”
Hilarious how often we see this said on JBF – despite it being objectively wrong. All you have to do is google his name and look at his yearly stats lol.
Awesome fan base

Correction – *Awesome fan (I meant sarcastically).
I don’t want to ever trash this entire fan base. We’ve all been through more than enough.

Matters a little bit. He’s the OC of division rival Atlanta again and those stupid comments please me. Exciting to think how he will be able to f#ck up a rookie QB when Ryan is done.
February 21st, 2019 at 3:01 pm
Seems like a lot being “read into” this. Frankly, I don’t care what Koetter has to say at this point, he’s in Atlanta.
IMO, Jameis has a lot to prove this year. Arians, I believe, will give him the tools necessary to succeed. As I have stated before, if there’s someone who can “fix” Jameis and this football team, it’s Coach Arians.
February 21st, 2019 at 3:10 pm

I don’t want to insult this entire fan base ever. It’s been through enough lol

I think we ALL told Dirk what we didn’t like about the Hamster and Dirk told us to stuff it b/c Gale Sayers wasn’t in the building. We ALL also told Dirk that Smitty’s D was hot garbage and his response was downright obnoxious and dismissive that making a change wouldn’t, couldn’t help things. Oh, let’s also not forget Dirk’s “I didn’t see it” child-like excuse after he was chest slapped by little Sean Payton. Yeah, Dirk is all about being open and wanting constructive feedback/criticism.
February 21st, 2019 at 3:32 pm
@SOE…
It has nothing to do with the BUCS. As currently constructed and going forward. NOTHING. Nada. Zilch. (Filler for clicks). Let’s see. The only offensive architect Jameis has ever known on the professional level makes his first comments after leaving the Bucs and talks about how Matt Ryan is a different from other QBs he’s worked with. And you think that has nothing to do with the Bucs? Joe won’t ignore hard information that might help Joe and all Bucs fans understand what happened last season. You can agree or disagree all you want, but “filler for clicks” and “nothing to do with the Bucs” is sadly mistaken. –Joe
So I’ll say again…as I said before….Who the F cares?!?!?
Go Bucs!

I think you’re reading waaaay too much into this.
February 21st, 2019 at 3:42 pm
Guys , Winston is really young..he will make mistakes , I just hope now that we have a real head coach that Winston can truly learn from types mistakes and not keep making them.he does tell coaches he thinks he likes all the plays because he thinks he can make every one work..i think if he was smart , he would understand defences and maybe change a play into a good one against the said defence..no need to still try the play and tho k you can make it work when you should k ow damn well play needs changed and no shame In that..beuce will get the most out of jameis one way or another..either we will extend him and he is the QB of the future or it’s tua in 2020..
February 21st, 2019 at 3:50 pm
Jameis communicated with Jimbo phenomenally, and anyone who says otherwise has zero clue. Dirk was a second rate coach and it showed. Jameis is extremely intelligent and can’t wait to see what he can do with Arians. Also, enough with the Tua crap, dude is so overrated its not even funny. Will get destroyed in the NFL when his team isn’t superior to the other teams.
February 21st, 2019 at 3:53 pm
This doesn’t surprise me a whole lot.
Jameis is one of those kind of guys who is always going to want to accept any challenge (maybe to a fault), and say “yes we can do this.” — He isn’t going to be as quick to say “no, I don’t like that one.”
Maybe he will build a rapport with Bruce that he is comfortable doing that.

Lol…aww Joe, did it get your spidey senses going?? 🙂
When you say “you can agree or disagree all you want”…..okay.
I’ll disagree. This “story” isn’t relevant to the 2019 Buccaneers. For 2019, and beyond.
I disagree. And it’s a filler, for clicks. 🙂 Consider me dis-agreed.

February 21st, 2019 at 4:09 pm
Articles like this are becoming mind-numbing Joe. Just look at the title …’Dirk Koetter IMPLIES Communication with Jameis Was Lacking’. Koetter was doing nothing but answering a question that had been posed to him about Matt Ryan by the Atlanta media. That’s it. He NEVER ONCE mentioned Jameis, or made any reference whatsoever to his time with the Bucs.
The Bucs will never move forward if we keep focusing on the past. Two sayings I’ve loved & tried to live by for years. One is ‘Life Happens …Deal With It’. (Pretty self-explanatory). The other? ‘You Are Where You Are’. (Sounds so obvious, yet so many people spend so much time wishing that they weren’t ‘where they are’ that they fail to act in the present and do something about it).
Can we PLEASE move on from Dirk Koetter. And Mike Smith. And Lovie Smith. And Greg Schiano. And Mark Domenick. And … all the rest. It’s great to learn from history, but to keep beating ourselves over the head with it is pretty sad.

4 years wish the same stupid coaching staff it all leads back to Dirt he’s the common denominator just a bad head coach with no direction didn’t know how to make adjustments he has always been told what to do and could not handle it on his own , JW will have the year we all have been waiting for and it might start slow but will finish strong you heard it here first .
February 21st, 2019 at 4:26 pm
No comparison. Unfortunately for Koetter, Jameis maturity level is and was nowheres even close to matt Ryan. Thats right, I said it! Jameis is probably just now working himself to, gettting to the level of maturity matt has always had.
Fortunate for Arians, He gonna reap the benefits of Jameis’s long and struggling growing pains. Jameis is getting there, Its just taking him a long long time. I’m not knockin Koetter, I wanted him gone. But he’s gonna do a great job as OC for the Falcons. He’s right..where he should have stayed..all along.
February 21st, 2019 at 4:28 pm
Did anyone actually read the quote. Dirk didn’t say Winston didnt do it he said like all the qbs he worked with can tell him what he likes or don’t like. Damn, people are stupid. No where does he say there was commincation issues

Hum. Same thing said by Jimbo Fisher.
It’s almost like Jameis knows better than the coaches and does what Jameis wants (also something Fisher alluded to).
February 21st, 2019 at 4:43 pm
Jameis is almost over, one more year to go. He is dumb, slow and socially awkward when he speaks. But he makes up for it by throwing pics. You are what you are after 4 years at this level. Besides any FSU bias, everyone (for the most part) can see that he is special (needs).
February 21st, 2019 at 4:48 pm
When your QB doesn’t listen it becomes more than a lack of communication. It borders on insubordination. This would not be the first time Koetter referenced Jameis’s propensity to not follow instructions but rather do his own thing. Even Jameis admitted that he tunes out his coaches sometimes and does what Jameis wants to do. I’m sure it was frustrating for Koetter but hopefully Arians can get through to him. This is the best hire this team has had in 11 years and Jameis better listen.

Joe, he said nothing about having communication issues at all. Period. Really? What part of the word communication is hard to define. Koetter is talking about an aspect of communication, as in a QB communicating what he doesn’t like. –Joe
Don’t you remember when Koetter said he prefers his QB to argue with him sometimes and tell him when a play won’t work? Jameis had done it and he liked it. So really, Jameis fits into the same category as Matt Ryan in this case.
February 21st, 2019 at 5:47 pm
@Ed chase
Unless Winston self destructs off the field, he will not be gone in 2 years. He will be a rich man and the first Bucs drafted QB to ever get a second contract.
February 21st, 2019 at 5:48 pm
And it;s been three years since the Uber thing, and a lot of maturing in his life. So he won’t mess up off the field again.

I can see it. I think Jameis tries to hard to show he can do whatever is asked. I don’t know this of course, just an observation from watching him as a fan. I think it is part of him being young, and a somewhat immature kid, as many of his actions have demonstrated. He wants so hard to show that he is going to be the guy everyone thinks he can be. Part of growing up is knowing when to acknowledge weaknesses, in order to improve. Just my opinion…

it’s funny to read you hypocrites questioning Jameis’s intelligence while most of the ones doing it regularly have attacked me for getting personal with the biggest fraud in bucs history cancer93….. you all must go to the same church as dungy the clown’s

Bull Tmax then why are those coaches not in the league as Head coaches ,because they suck and koetter is the worst of the bunch he had the best team and could not score inside the red zone and I talked about him being a big mistake and the fans would suffer yet again ,but I a moving on and I for one feel great about the next couple of years, but the Glazers need to stay out of the coaching tree they suck at it and now they know it .

I just want a Head coach too look the media in the face and not at his shoes after a loss that alone tells you about what kind of man that was running things ,and I never want to hear his name again and I think the bucs will be a big surprise this year and the last coach whats his name ran JW and the rest of this team into the ground ,we need a leader not a follower and we have that now ,Go Bucs

Wow what a way to twist a statement. The headline is not only accurate, there is nothing twisted whatsoever. Joe really recommends re-reading it slowly. –Joe This was more Koetter complementing Matt Ryan than anything else! And the last I checked koetter has worked with a lot of quarterbacks and he said any other quarterback I’ve ever worked with. He did not single out anyone other than to compliment a Ryan. So the headline should say communication lacking with all quarterbacks other than Matt Ryan not just Jameis Winston. SMH It is you who added the “just.” That was neither written nor implied in this post. –Joe

Let’s just all hope that Arians and Winston can get on the same page and get the best out of each other.
If not, Winston will resume his career somewhere else as a journeyman and career backup and Arians will just retire again.
At least that will finally get Jason Licht fired though.

@ Joe,
Can you add anything to this comment posted on another site?
Offensive coach: “The word on the street is that Winston still does the childish stuff off the field because he thinks it’s cool. He is competitive as s— on the field. They win every two-minute drill against the defense in practice. It’s just how competitive Jameis is. You love those things. If he ever got that other side of his life worked out, maybe he could really be something.”
February 22nd, 2019 at 12:47 am
D1:
Have no clue where that is from or what it means.
February 22nd, 2019 at 3:08 am
@Joe,
Quote is from a Bucs website. The article was an evaluation from NFL coaches, GM’s, scouts. They had comments from coaches, GM’s, etc etc,. The article was evaluating Winston and Mariota. I am interested in your opinion on the comment. If there’s anything to it could this be part of the communication issue or is this just so much hearsay? Joe isn’t about to pretend to understand Jameis’ mindset as far as what he thinks “is cool.” And Joe’s not about to think being competitive in practice is a special trait. That’s very common among good players. Plus, once the season starts, the Bucs never went full speed in practice. They never tackled to the ground in training camp, either.–Joe

“Winston is extremely intelligent” You must have a prescription!! That’s why he’s been making basically the same mistakes for 4 years now. I believe he has the ability to finally break through with Bruce Almighty and Leftwich guiding him, But let’s not get all stupid about it. He raped a student at FSU, then assaulted the Uber driver. That’s freaking Brilliant, a real Rhodes Scholar, Mensa Member, All you have to do is look at him, there’s something not quite right under that helmet.
