Attacks former Bucs QB.
In the eyes of a famous NFL typist, few football coaches in recent history have been sold down the river, sabotaged and martyred quite like former Bucs commander Greg Schiano.
And this word is coming from none other than mock draft-scowling, L.L. Bean-wearing, Second Amendment abolitionist, Mike Florio-arguing, parrot-insensitive, chewing-with-his-mouth-open, soup-gulping, California train-romancing, anti-football proliferation, outhouse-admiring, airline-napping, steerage-flying, Yogi Berra-worshiping, urinal picture-taking, video game-playing, Taylor Swift-listening, pickpocket-thwarting, Bucs-uniform-frowning, Allie-LaForce-smitten, Big-Ten-Network-hating, pedestrian-bumping, olive oil-lapping, popcorn-munching, coffee-slurping, fried-chicken-eating, oatmeal-loving, circle-jerking, craft beer-chugging, cricket-watching, scone-loathing, college football-naïve, baseball-box-score-reading, NPR-honk, filthy-hotel-staying, fight-instigating, barista-training social activist Peter King of NBC fame.
Per Jason Lisk of TheBigLead, King recently appeared on a Boston sports radio show and the subject matter turned to Schiano, who was named Bill Belicheat’s defensive coordinator last week. That came after Schiano’s four-year stint as defensive coordinator for Ohio State, his lone job since he was fired by Team Glazer in January 2014.
In talking about Belicheat hiring Schiano, King believes Schiano has been a victim of shady characters that doomed both his years with the Bucs and his would-be hiring as football coach for the University of Tennessee. The latter was doomed by a sports radio host who incited a mob insurrection in Knoxville.
“I think Greg Schiano has gotten jobbed more than any coach on a high level over the last few years in football,” King said on the Dale & Keefe Show on WEEI-AM 850. “Let’s go back to when he was in Tampa. Was he a nut job with some of his rules? Yes, no question about it. Could he have not attacked the middle of the Giants’ offensive line when they were in victory formation? Yes, absolutely, I don’t think you should do that.
“But I’ll also tell you this: He had a quarterback, Josh Freeman, who was an insubordinate person when he was the Bucs’ quarterback. And again, look, no quarterback has to, underline has to, it’s not mandatory that you work seven days during the football season. Josh Freeman didn’t think that he should work either much or at all on Tuesdays, that was his day off. And it was always hard for the staff to reach him.”
Joe is just going to come out and say it: Freeman is a weird SOB. That’s about the most polite thing Joe can say about him. Joe never had any issue with Freeman but also can’t speak of any type of relationship because Freeman was so aloof.
The thing that sent Schiano over the edge with the leaky, sleepy Bucs quarterback came when the Bucs were 6-6 and riding a two-game losing streak during the 2012 season. Freeman flew out of town on a Tuesday for a BSPN photo shoot rather than come in to One Buc Palace for film study to help stop the streak. Even worse, Freeman posed as a double for rumored pedophile Michael Jackson.
Schiano had tolerated Freeman’s quirkiness (as in Raheem Morris’ famous saying: “I will tolerate you until I can replace you”), bad sleeping habits and overall weirdness, but posing as Jackson and not studying tape was the point of no return for Schiano and Freeman.
This is the first time Joe read the word “insubordinate” in relation to Freeman, though Joe does know Freeman racked up a lot of fines for breaking team rules, mostly related to perpetually being late or even as a no-show at team functions.

These guys have a short career and have to get that national spotlight on them to get those extra promotional dollars that just might give them an income stream post football…and the problem is he went to do some self-promotion on his day off? I’ve heard stories from people who have partied with this guy that just blows my mind. Idk what happened to him, I liked Freeman but it just seems like he couldn’t handle the success and it all went to his head.
Was he lazy and missing meetings in 2010 when they were 10-6 or was it only after he was hyped up by the media?

Schiano antagonized the situation and was to stupid to try and get trade value for the guy. He was picked up immediately after he was cut. Whether he was insubordinate or not doesn’t matter, Schiano doomed himself with his college like atmosphere and trying to rule with an iron fist but had not credibility or winning pedigree. He doomed himself just like Raheem just like Lovie and Koetter. Not sure how freeman torpedoed his job when he couldn’t win without Freeman. Production based business Peter you turd. Freeman has enough issues and yea I’m curious how things went down but there’s a reason he got fired and is just now getting back into the nfl and it ain’t Freeman. Dude sucked as a coach, people here think it’s ok to be good one one side of the ball as a head coach

Agreed! Hindsight is 20/20 and looking back Schiano DID get jobbed.
And don’t forget that POS Michael Silver going on NFL Network as often as he could and practically lobbying for the Bucs to fire Schiano. He pulled every string he had to get that done. He was angry, hate filled, and had an ax to grind. Maybe a bad experience with Schiano he never got over?
I’m still fine with rushing the victory formation in those specific instances too. Sure, not when you’re down by more than one possession.

Inside story:
Josh Freeman, per my sources, was/is severely bipolar. That meant he had to take meds to manage it. Unfortunately, the meds he was prescribed often made him drowsy and sleepy. This frustrated him to no end because of the real and perceived pressure from his coaches, so he eventually started skipping doses. This resulted in many highs and lows. That was the odd behavior Joe probably noticed. Freeman’s doctors started to try new meds in order to try to find one to bring hi. Back into balance.
Unfortunately, his doctor did not clear it with the NFL, which resulted in trouble for Freeman.
Again frustrated, Freeman completely stopped taking his meds, thinking the meds were costing his career. It wasn’t clear-headed thinking. Doing so made him completely lose control.
Here’s the thing. Josh Freeman should have sued the league. He had an open and shut case. There is no reason why someone with bipolar should not be able to have a career in the NFL, but their rules and procedures prevented him from managing the illness. Just like ramps would be added for wheelchair bound handicapped persons, the NFL needs to update their treatment of the mentally handicapped.
Managing bipolar is extremely difficult by itself. Placing someone with the illness in a leadership role is risky, but so long as the league, doctors and the player are working together to manage it, things can work. But there will be times when things go out of whack, and teams/the league need to understand that.
Freeman’s illness completely ruined his career, but had the Bucs and the league accepted that illness and cooperated with his doctor, things might not have gone so far. It was a form of discrimination, really. Hence, grounds for a lawsuit.
But Freeman was not mentally aware enough to realize it.

This was a perfect storm of an aloof QB who didn’t have the mental make-up, desire and work ethic to put in the effort of a year round NFL job mixed in with a no nonsense Head Coach who didn’t have the proven track record to match his ego and the incredible demands that he asked of the players.
Not going to get into the Freeman “rumors”, but I believe Schiano has a lot of Bill Belichick type of personality in him regarding how to coach a team. Both seem to be “a my way or the highway” mindset where you must buy into the system type and the system is more important than the individual players (who are and can be expendable; exception Tom Brady) type of mentality. There was too much of a dichotomy between Raheem Morris and Schiano that the players didn’t respect Schiano who had yet to prove anything on the NFL level. Simply put, you take a high pressure, highly demanding HC who lives and breathes football all the time mixed with a “troubled” QB who didn’t want to put in the time and energy into his profession and you had a recipe for disaster.

My favorite was that My Brother and sister in-law had their first child at St. Joseph’s Woman’s hospital, and they had a window over looking the Bucs parking lot across the street, And who came racing up and sprinting in the build just before noon????? Jfro-6pak!!!!!!!! And then Dude was first one sprinting out of the building like he was Fred Flinstone at quitting time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The funny thing was that Coach Schiano has been right on almost everything and the local media still won’t acknowledge it!!!!!!!!!!! So True, I live in Knoxville and people here were going crazy that TN was about to name Schiano as HC. What everyone says in the media was because of his ties to Penn State, however 98% of the people hear never knew anything about that, but some of the louder voices made that come out. It had to do with his time as a coach a Tampa and what happened there not what happened at PS.

Surprised Joe doesn’t stay mum on this topic with the way he said Boomer Esiason “spouted seemingly baseless allegations” against Freeman. Joe called it “ugly rumormongering” and “smearing” even asking that Boomer be “muzzled” because he didn’t provide sources, as if it was made up because he had to just entertain a national audience. Schiano, “The Little General” was a clown (See my avatar). He lost the locker room on the 1st day of camp, running 110 yard sprints in August heat and humidity.
Freeman almost died on the sidelines and was projectile vomiting like Linda Blair in the Exorcist. Do you think Josh trusted him after that?
Someone was handing out Adderal like it was candy, an old Rutger’s trick, on the day that the NFL pee tests a percentage of players for drugs.
The Little General showed how ethical he was by trading Brian Price to the Bears while he was being carted off the field into an ambulance. Turns out 300 LB guys with bad wheels are not sprinters after all. If Brian was a horse, he would have been shot.
The team lost the 1st week of camp because they needed a week to recover
from the dreaded 110 yard gauntlets.
He constantly embarrassed the team arguing with referees on the sidelines when he had no clue whatsoever about NFL rules compared to college. Bellicheat should make him read a rule book and test him.
Schiano should have been fired the 1st day.

Josh Freeman torpedoed the end of the 2012 season and the entire 2013 season for us. Lombardi couldn’t have saved those years. 100 percent on Josh Freeman.
One of these days we will get the true story, though I think most of have a pretty good idea of what the issue was.
Schiano is a good football coach. Not necessarily a good HEAD coach, but the guy knows defense, is a great recruiter and he deserved better than he has gotten over the past decade.

Josh Freeman was a missed opportunity, but let’s also take a look at Rockwell-lovin’ ex-Bucs GM Mark Dominik. According to my sources, when Free was about to do the photo shoot, here is how the conversation went down:
Free: Mr. Dominik, I’m thinking about doing a photo shoot where I dress up as Michael Jackson and re-create the iconic Thriller album cover.
MD: I love it! I really like the songs, “Beat It” and “Billie Jean”, but my favorite song by far is “Human Nature”! Very underrated song in my opinion. Please don’t tell anyone I like Michael Jackson because I want to keep my reputation as a “rock star”.

If Josh was in fact bipolar, it blows my mind that neither his agent, the team doctors, the team owners, his parents, or even Josh himslef when he was balanced did not first approach the league and then if unsuccessful, publicly advocate a very needed program for bipolar athletes that most likely would have provided some type of prescribed drug allowances for any athlete clinically diagnosed as bipolar. It sounds like many fell short on providing help for the young man and missed an opportunity for many other athletes tryng to manage a difficult handicap.

Looka here, I’m no Schiano fan. But it has become apparent Freeman simply talked a good game. He did not have the dedication needed or required to be good or great. I hate to admit this because Yes, I was a big Freeman fan. But
he lost what he had somewheres along the way. Schiano will do just fine under Bellacheat. I’m just hopin and prayin, our chorus line of coaches stops. I’m so tired of losing. Well said, totally agree. Schiano is a martyr during our basement years. I believe, if given some time to adapt, he would’ve been good. I get it, he’s not fun to play for, but he developed some NFL talent while at Rutgers. Say what you will, the man can coach.

I think this entire story is backwards. Freeman was a top young QB, then the Jersey Trash(tm) Schiano comes to down, tells Freeman he’s not allowed to leave the pocket and straps huge knee braces on him to make him immobile, then starts on what a fatso Freeman is. So Freeman, who clearly was an insecure guy, tries to please Schiano by losing like 60lbs and getting a 6 pack over an offseason. Now, how you go from fat Freeman to ripped with a 6-pack Freeman in a few months is beyond me, but I’m guessing some pharmaceuticals were involved. Anywho skinny Freeman shows up at camp and the Jersey Trash(tm) Schiano no sells it, just says I didn’t ask him to lose weight, I have no idea why he lost all the weight. B…S… Anywho Schiano took the nervous nelly Freeman and turned him to a life of drugs (allegedly), then he just turned his back on Freeman and drafted a mini-giraffe to replace him. Also to top off the story the Jersey Trash(tm) Schiano then leaks Freeman’s medical records to the press in one last f-you.
That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it, and it’s a lot less fake news than anything that cupcake King has ever written.

Shiano always caught flack for the victory formation attack but, I not only didn’t have a problem with it, I applaud it. It was a one score game on the Giants’ side of the field. If you are down two or more scores than that attacking approach could be considered bush-league. We always hear “play to the end”, that is what they were doing. He caught flack because he challenged a long-standing, unsubstantiated football doctrine.
This video makes the premadonna Freeman look like more of a premadonna. Shiano still coached the best Buccaneers defense since Montie left a decade ago.
If his alleged “blind eye” at PSU is true then, Shiano is a turd too.

Assuming the ‘bipolar’ claim for a moment (not impuning the poster, at all), one would assume that the team would’ve, should’ve and did know about this BEFORE drafting Josh— especially considering Raheem was at KSU. If so, it’s almost inconceivable that ownership and the GM would think that Schiano was the right sort of coach to stabilize the QB, much less the team. Yeah, I know they were reeling from Kelly’s jiltering at the altar, but I can’t help but look back and WTF the entire thing.

BB there is a lot of innuendo there. I might guess that there possibly was ignorance by the Bucs and the NFL about the totality of Josh Freeman’s health.
I am just not sure how you sue if you say that Josh had perceived pressure as well as the ordinary pressure of a high profile job. I doubt you are saying that an NFL QB has to be let to continue to start if he is protected in other ways under the ADA.
If Josh is still suffering from a bipolar disorder, depression or other mental illness, he deserves proper care. If he had these issues during his career, I wish he with his doctors assistance had used his special forum to speak out. That would have helped not only himself but others about the issues many people face.
Actually, he could still use his history as a NFL quarterback and how that affected him today. Many would listen.

Frank Pillow- Kelly pulling out at the last possible moment I think completely screwed over the Glazers who panicked into hiring the Jersey Trash(TM) Schiano. Schiano was a guy, when you took out division 2 wins, had a losing college record. The only reason the guy was hired was because Bill Belichick is an evil mastermind who loves giving recommendations for guys who he knows will tank other franchises, and Bill also knew Schiano was one of his sycophants and he’d be able to take advantage of him, like getting Blount and Talib basically for nothing.

He got signed, and immediately started in Minnesota, then he went to I think Indy and Miami and was in camp for someone else, he literally stayed in the league for a long time. What exactly would he be suing for? Fat Freeman was a great young QB, and in my opinion Schiano ruined him. Yes, I get Freeman was a nutjob, but Schiano cracked that nut and ruined him. The only thing Freeman could sue for is having his medical records leaked, and I still think that was 100% Schiano’s doing. But because you flake out and you can’t keep a job isn’t anyone’s fault (legally) but your own. It’s really disgusting that people think there’s a pot of money out there to be had because of their personal failings and conditions, it’s an awful mindset.
It’s the same BS mindset that says players get concussion payments when literally everyone in the world knew and knows that getting hit in the head isn’t good for your health. Literally everyone knows that, yet these slobs pretend like they didn’t know that in order to get some of that “free” money. It’s just disgusting.

Schiano was and still is a good coach. Defense is where he belongs and BB hiring him as his DC on the best team over the last two decades. Freeman wasted his talent and threw it all away because he was stupid. Another wasted pick by the Bucs who are terrible when it comes to due diligence. They just can’t seem to find the right guys about 90% of the time. I sure hope BA can turn things around.

I always thought the team was showing improvement in Schiano’s last few games here. I understand why he was fired. His whole body of work was not what ownership (or fans) had hoped for, but I don’t think he is as bad a coach as some said.
I was glad to see him get another NFL job. I was afraid the PC police were going to end his career at one point.

With my screen name it should come as no surprised that I totally agree with what Realist and some other pro-Schiano posters have said. Glad to see Greg back in the NFL and how fitting it be that it’s with the league’s premier organization. Schiano will most likely succeed there since the guy is passionate about coaching football, has a vast amount of football X’s and O’s knowledge, and will get pointers from the best in the business whereas we already saw what happened to slacker Josh after his release from the Bucs. Some of you cats still trying to defend Freeman and paint him as some sort of victim must be high on Josh’s meds.

It’s articles like these that make me read Joe Bucs less and less. You’re blasting the writer of an article, while also agreeing with all of his comments. And Joe brings up this Schiano/Freeman business all the time. It’s crazy. And always insert harsh personal opinions of Freeman every time. Schiano was over 5 years ago. And the freeman nonsense was in his first year as the head coach. Now you have to throw in comments like Freeman wanting “to be a double” for “pedofile” Michael Jackson. That’s almost as classless as Joe crapping all over the Dali murseum in your articles, a staple of the St Pete community.
I realize there’s not a lot to write about right now. But seriously grow up. Joe clearly loves Schiano for whatever reason. The worst Bucs HC ever in my opinion. Made headlines for the Bucs as the laughing stock and absolutely destroyed the team.
