Jameis Talks About Playing To Win While Playing Not To Lose

The Friday cruise of America’s Quarterback through Radio Row in Atlanta sure was revealing in many ways.
Jameis Winston decided to open a window to evolving mindset. (Fell free to scroll down on the JoeBucsFan home page. There’s lots to soak in.)
While talking on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Jameis was asked a question about what he sees in his game that needs to improve. “What are you seeing that you got to do on the real to improve and to more importantly get the Ws that we talk about you guys do at the quarterback position?”
The question came in a film context, as in what in your on-field game has to upgrade. Jameis decided to go to the mental card.
“I think the biggest thing that I’ve learned over my career; you gotta play to win the game but you can’t be the one to lose the game for your team,” Jameis replied. “You don’t have to be the one to throw the game-winning touchdown. You don’t have to be the one to be the reason why you won. You just can’t be the reason why you lose. Through a couple of different mentors, we’ve just kind of worked through that process and they’ve helped me along the way.”
Man, Jameis sure does think a lot.
Hard Knocks devotees will remember the 2017 scene of Dirk Koetter lecturing Jameis on how he is the only one who can single-handedly lose a game for the Bucs. It seems Jameis needed personal mentors to accept the message 20-something games later.
Yes, it’s called maturity.
Jameis is talking the talk, and that’s great. But he’s nearing the end of the line. If he’s going to keep being an inconsistent player, then the Bucs will surely replace him.

Interesting Joe. Appreciate the insight. For those that jump on every article to crucify the subject, you miss the point. If you watched the games beyond a middle school level you’d realize the QB position has not and is not the problem with our team over the last few years. But if you’re a shiney object watching, no football playing, madden franchise believing, holier than thou spouting Bucs “fan” I get get you. Go Bucs!

That was so revealing to why Koetter was fired. Coaching the QB to play the game not to lose. “You have a really good defense” SMH.. Glad he’s gone.
Jameis thinks WAY TOO MUCH about this. He needs to play and accept the results as they come. When you chart his INTs they aren’t as much a result of being reckless (his fumbles are however), they are results of careful or tentative throws. He short arms his INTs. Very, very rarely gets picked on balls he just lets rip.
The biggest thing he needs to hear is YOU aren’t the reason for wins and losses, no matter what. YOU are part of a team. YOU have to do YOUR job and that’s it. Stop worrying about mistakes or possibilities of being the one that loses a game. What was Jordan’s saying “26 times I’ve taken the game winning shot and missed”.. Great players can’t be afraid of a mistake. Honestly, I don’t see this as maturation, I see this as regression. Learning that he has a job and he is counted on to do that job, which means taking chances that will end up in INTs is part of it. The fumbles tho… his job is to find space when the O-line collapses and protect the ball when he gets hit.
I used to say this about GMC and I will start beating the drum to Winston. Do YOUR job.

Football is a T-E-A-M sport, and every player is ACCOUNTABLE for their play on the field. And ESPECIALLY the QB, since he’s the ONLY player who touches the ball on virtually every offensive play. And because of that, QBs faux pas tend to be more visible, and yes, to be criticized more than those of others. But good news … they also tend to get paid very handsomely for their good play.
Jameis’ play has been ‘consistently inconsistent’. And yes, THAT IS A PROBLEM. But more good news: Jameis recognizes that & seems to be intent on fixing that problem. And even more good news: He now has ‘The Quarterback Whisperer’ to help him fix it. It’s a ‘make-or-break’ year for Jameis (in Tampa at least) and he knows it.
He doesn’t need any excuses made for him, like ‘Oh if he just had a running game’. Or ‘Jameis would be doing a lot better if it wasn’t for the Bucs defense’. Or ‘What Jameis needs is better OLine protection’. Nope, sorry. What Jameis NEEDS is to play better as our franchise QB. No more excuses.

JW’s problem is he had to play a perfect game for the team to win because the defense could never and I mean never get a stop when it needed one.

Like JW and hope he’s the long-term answer at QB, but talk is just talk until results are seen on the field. Personally believe it’s more than just about the “W’s”, believe your teammates have to trust that you’ll do your job without carelessly turning the ball over consistently, win or lose. Using the same “I’ve just got to do a better job of protecting the football…..we can’t have turnovers… etc.” lines during each post-game presser has gotten old. Interceptions are going to happen, but they can be limited as well. Give us more than lip service and be a mature team leader and the team and fans will follow you. Believe one of Fitz’s traits that the team responded to was the confidence and steadiness he exhibited as a long-term pro. Hopefully we see JW develop more of that as he progresses.

I’m glad JW is finally “thinking”. Do we suppose that Brady doesn’t think a LOT about his preparation.
Romo just said that Brady will be looking at the Rams in the first quarter to learn what he can early.
JW obviously thought the final six games of the season. If you guys call throwing the ball into the stands when there is no play thinking…I’m all for it. I’ve seen enough ints and fumbles from NOT thinking and trying for the miracle play that is not there.
It’s a balance and perhaps even a fine line…JW never had it until the second half of this season. If he keeps that “thinking” up and we improve this off season he and WE are going to win big time.
And puhleeze don’t tell me that the “thinking” new JW is not still exciting…just for us instead of those opposing DB’s and DC’s!
Again…go to youtube and watch those two passes he nailed in the end zone against the Falcons. They were miraculous passes right at the OB line in the end zone to both ME and Godwin who both made great perhaps even spectacular catches. Both of those plays were low % completions but they were not dangerous because JW put the ball where only our WR’s could catch it IF they made a play. We have great targets I’m for giving them chances to make a play as long as the D has no chance. Seriously go back and watch those plays.

Yea, you are right, #3 does have a lot of haters. Any guess WHY? It’s not bc he WINS (like Tom Brady) , that’s for sure. And save the racial bs for your mom bc there are other black QBs throughout the league that don’t come under the same kind of scrutiny, not even CLOSE, not even if they absolutely SUCK. We’ll give you some time to think on that one, bruv.

without seeing the plays you are talking about, I am puzzled by your use of short
armed an INT. No sense overanalyzing it and saying he is thinking too much about not losing.Its a football play so so analyze as such. IF he is short arming ,IMO he is trying to take something off the ball. when Jameis is trying to put touch on the ball his delivery is shorter and a little awkward looking. This is an area where being a fastball pitcher has slowed his development. That said he has started to get some good air underneath his passes to Evans in the 30 35 yard range.

You cannot blame Jameis for 9-7,6-10,5-11,5-11 coming into the NFL being 20 years old. If so, Koetter wouldn’t have been on the flamin hot seat since the end of 2017. His play in those last 6 games in 2018 makes me think he’s finally making the change into being a mature NFL QB at least on the field. Taking the sack, scrambling and using his running abilities, throwing the ball away. He’s not great on the deep ball but now he’s drawing defenders away from receivers by scrambling to the LOS and making the much easier pass that’s not going straight into the hands of LBs in the middle of the field. Very excited to see what BA can show him.
