Super Bowl A Window Into Future

February 3rd, 2019

Roster limbo.

When the Super Bowl kicks off tonight, Bucs fans may get a glimpse of the future.

The Bucs have a new defensive coordinator, in case you haven’t heard, Todd Bowles. And along with him is a new defensive line coach, Kacy Rodgers.

Watching the Los Angeles Rams playing defense under Wade Phillips, Jenna Laine of ESPN believes the Bucs will play the same type of defense.

Phillips largely has been credited for adapting his father Bum Phillips’ traditional 3-4, two-gap defense into a more modern 3-4, one-gap scheme predicated on the use of quicker players and more penetration … closer to what the Bucs have now with their 4-3 defense. Bowles and [Rodgers] worked under Phillips in 2007 with the Dallas Cowboys, so there is familiarity already with the defensive approach.

Laine details how Phillips would use various Bucs players and says fans might want to get used to seeing Phillips’ type of defense in Tampa.

The big asterisk in Laine’s solid research is the status of stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. With the Bucs in a salary cap crunch, GMC could be released or traded to save $13 million in 2019.

And he just might be happy to get out of here and go to a winning team.

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    YOU OUTTA HEA SUCKA!!!!!!!!!!

  3. ben Says:

G.McCoy has suffered enough playing for the bucs.. Trade him to a winner!!

  4. stpetebucsfan Says:

I think it depends on whether GMC is willing to renegotiate his contract. He still has value, just not 13 million worth.

GMC clearly is set for life financially. He could have retired several years ago if we’re just talking $$$.

So he’s playing for more than just the salary. He WAS the face of the franchise…he might like to see the franchise finally turn it around if he truly believes there’s a chance.

If I was his agent I’d go to the Bucs and say go ahead and cut him and see what he’s worth on the open market. If he can get 13 million God bless him and good luck wherever he plays.

Most here believe that’s not going to happen. If he gets less then he could leave the door open for the Bucs depending on what they offer and how close it is to true “market value”.

  5. Hodad Says:

Was that a type o Joe? I think you meant dud defensive tackle McCoy instead of stud!

  6. TheBucsAnthem Says:

GMC or Cancer93 (thanks TMAX) needs to go…. He’s never uplifted his teammates which is what marquee / leaders do….. He’s a fraud and has always been one since he arrived here in Tampa.

In the short time JPP has been here……. He’s already uplifted his teammates.

  7. ATrain Says:

    Trade him

I bet we can atleast get an 8th round pick for him

  8. Smashsquatch Says:

“My bad Ben….” go apologize elsewhere. There’s no cupcakes in football. He polluted Vea quickly, and it if not for a pep talk from the GM, he’d been lost to the soft side. Too bad Koetter wasn’t the one to coach him harder. Jameis begged for tough love year one, yet the Bucs kept coddling him. This new coaching staff will ditch all the softies and toughen up the roster to match JPP’s hide. GMC must go.

  9. BigMacAttack Says:

I think Gerald is beyond trading. Licht missed the boat when he could have received a high first round pick for McCoy. Licht should try to restructure a team friendly extension that pays less for diminished skills. Either way, here or there, I don’t care.

  10. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

    “It’s So Hard…To Say Goodbye…To GMC”. ( not really )

  11. BucEmUp 7 Says:

Its a shame that for the first time the bucs have had a good head coach since gmc has been here that now he may possibly be leaving. He has obviously lost a step maybe he would restructure his contract and stay. Cut djax all together but mccoy woukd ve nice to keep around if hes willing to take a paycut

  12. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I have no doubt that McCoy yearns for the day when he can escape that humid, trailer park infested, retirement community riddled, low class, no culture hell hole called Florida. I was born and raised there and I’m never going back. The poor guy has suffered enough of this losing organization and the ungratefulness of the ignorant fan base. Too bad for me I was a Buc fan since being a little boy and thus cannot escape the urge to check in on them from time to time. Sucks for me. But it doesn’t have to suck for McCoy any longer, and I bet he’s thinking that way.

  13. Not there yet Says:

When you have a second year quarterback come out and tell a veteran like Geraldine he needs him to be a different type of leader. Dude is a decent player and why he had no impact on this team but to be fair Aaron Donald is the best d tackle in football and could do no better than 7-9 with fisher. He’s weak minded and I hope the coach is smart enough Not to build around weak minded player like the ones before him

  14. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Because landlocked, Nutz2Buttz traffic-filled Dallas is a paradise.
    #NoFlyZone

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I suspect GMC will be willing to rework his contract. He’s more of a team player than most of the fans here will ever be.

  16. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

2-gap is better for run defense, 1-gap is better for pass defense

4-3 or 3-4 is doesn’t matter as long as you have good edge rushers

Our best edge rushers are DE, so it makes sense to play 4-3 even though #7423 would rather build the defense around Vita Vea and switch to 3-4

  17. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Super Agent Bonzie with his typical swipe at the fan base. How exactly can fans be “team players”? 100 million already for GMC…doubt there’s a re-work but you are an “insider”.

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

FLBoyIn Dallas..You’s a cold man!! I have to remind you though, All states have their minues. If You are in Tx. I can think of several. People get in where they can..fit in in this world. Everybody gotta live somewheres. Remember that. I can tell you have some bad memories of Fl. I grew up in Fl and loved it. So not everybody feels the way you do. I’m hard on my Bucs here and there. But we have nowheres to go..But Up. And our time is coming. I can feel it.

  19. TOM Says:

I believe the Bucs could get a 3rd or 4th rounder for McCoy. Plus a bevy of other players could trade for draft choices. Mainly D. Smith.

  20. BucFan3 Says:

Keep GMC and let him enjoy the ride to winning. Stop signing players like Chris Baker and D-Jax. Bucs have youthful talent and now proper coaching. Just supplement with a couple veteran COHESIVE Teammate FA Signings.

  21. sandwichman Says:

Keep reminding me why I stopped coming here Joes. Thanks for the kick in arse.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

    FLboyinDallas

You are the worst kind of troll. I lived in Texas for a year just west of Dallas. It SUCKED! I feel no need to visit Cowboy fan sites and behave like a jckarse.

What is wrong with you? You’re glad to be gone if Dallas truly satisfied you, you wouldn’t feel the need to degrade Florida.

We’re glad you’re gone. The state already has enough prks.

  23. Pa Privateer Says:

I see no reason why he can’t play 34DE if asked. He has the size and quickness for a 34de

  24. tmaxcon Says:

dallas is hardly an upgrade over any location outside of maybe rural Louisiana and that’s a a solid maybe.. people in glass houses should never throw a rock…

Cancer93 is a joke good riddance. Cancer93 leaving bucs is a textbook example of addition by subtraction

  25. MadMax Says:

If we do trade or cut him, then we definitely need to draft williams or oliver…but Williams will probably be gone by the time we pick.

  26. tmaxcon Says:

    Bonzi

The only time cancer93 is a team player when he’s giving up the booty against the run to the other team or when the defensive unit he captains gives up leads to ensure the other team embarrases his team… cancer93 is a great team player for the other team. Opponents love facing that soft loser its like they have an extra offensive line the way he sucks against the run

  27. tmaxcon Says:

Stop with trade bs…. its not happening the 8th rd pick comment is accurate. No professional GM is giving up a pick for a washed up, soft, over 30, sideline crying locker room cancer who sucks the life out of the organization top to bottom and makes 10 to 12 plays per decade

  28. Defense Rules Says:

@BucEmUp 7 … “Cut djax all together but mccoy woukd ve nice to keep around if hes willing to take a paycut.” Exactly BucEmUp. GMC’s $13 mil salary is a non-starter based on our salary CAP situation AND that he’s a DT over 30 now. Age catches up to all of us. BUT … he’s still a very good player IMO & the Bucs NEED more than just Vea & Allen as our DTs (I’m assuming that Unrein will be released based on his concussion history).

And for those who’ve advocated trading GMC, when was the last time you saw a team trade for a 30-year-old DT who’s lost a step & whose contract is for $13 mil? Outside of the Rams signing Suh for $14 mil that is so they could make a run at the Super Bowl.

  29. El Buco Realisto Says:

    @defense rules

The question when sitting him down and telling him his value will be, is a “real” talk of his snap percentage!!!!! Will they tell him that he will be used in packages and stay around the 50% of defensive snap counts!!!!! The plan this past year was for a greater rotation, but that was out the windows with all the injuries on the D-line!!!!!! The only way I would want GMC back on the roster is in the Less is more role!!!!!! It does no one any good when he is worn out in the second quarter!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!

  30. Defense Rules Says:

El Buco Realisto … Completely agree with the 50% figure, especially now that GMC is getting older (and that’d be good rationale on Licht’s part to pay him less). His high % of defensive snaps is surely a key factor in GMC not being very ‘fresh’ in the 2nd quarter & 4th quarter of games. And especially here in Florida in the summer & fall … it’s just downright HOT. We feel it just sitting up in the stands; can’t imagine what those guys feel down on the field (supposedly at least 10 degrees hotter PLUS they’re not exactly wearing T-shirts & shorts out there). Neither Vea nor Allen seem to come anywhere close to the on-the-field time that GMC (and JPP) generates on the DLine.

    GMC IS A BEAST

  34. Whatinthebuchappend Says:

Look people , it’s the same every time someone brings up Geraldine McCoy ! Half of y’all say he’s good & half of y’all can’t stand him ! Then the name calling starts , if it was a player worth fighting over I could see the passion..this guy even in his prime , has NOT made any game winning plays..period ! He is NOT worth keeping even at say 8 mil a year if he even desides to take a pay cut..in which he undoubtedly would not ! I would rather cut his arse and draft say Ed Oliver to replace him..start rotating guys along the line to keep them fresh and move on from this big , over-hyped , softie of a defensive tackle that is just stealing bucs loot and has for years ! Take that first pick and draft Oliver & take that 13 mil and move it to FA for other needs..that is the smart thing no dought to do ! Why in the hell would the bucs do anything else than that ! That 13 mil could upgrade at safety or at corner opposite Davis , grab a decent RB & I would go get a TRUE fullback to open holes ! Power run the rock ! Play action passes as jameis is really good doing that and play solid defence WITHOUT McCoy ! Winning formula that bucco Bruce can for sure coach the hell out of ! For Christ sake we won with Michael Pittman & Brad Johnson with that formula on offence , I’m sure Todd bowles can get this defence to middle of the road without McCoy and maybe better than that ! F MCCOY and GO BUCS !

  35. DooshLaRue Says:

To all of you guys talking about restructuring Softie’s contract:

Do you really think we’ll get 100% effort at a reduced rate?
    I don’t.
Softie’s feelings will be hurt and he’ll be even softer.

Get rid of him and build a nasty D!

  36. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Aaron donald wears #99, but it really means Warren Sapp

  37. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    St. Pete,

I’ve never been a Cowboys fan and never will be. And I’m not a troll here…I’ve been commenting on JBF long before you showed up (for about ten years now). I’ve lived in many places in the US and all over the world, including twenty years being born and raised in Florida including going to high school at St. Pete High, and what I said was absolutely true. Of all the places I’ve lived and visited Florida is the least desirable. And I still have lots of family there and consider myself a Florida boy even today. So my opinion is as honest and objective as you’ll find. If you don’t like how blunt I am about that state that’s your issue, not mine. Get over it. Or not. I really don’t care.
