Jameis: All Bucs Need To Be Like JPP

February 2nd, 2019

Gets props from his QB.

Wow, the greatest trade the Bucs have made in recent years has to be a third-round pick for defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul.

There is no question JPP was one of the few professionals in a locker room where too many guys who were not all-in got propped up as team leaders. It should have been the other way around.

And in an internationally broadcast radio appearance live from radio row at the World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta yesterday, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, wanted to make it clear that JPP got the props he deserved.

When asked by popular sports radio and television personality Adam Schein, host of “Schein on Sports” heard exclusively on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio, to break down goals he and the Bucs have for 2019, Jameis essentially said if the Bucs had a roster full of players wired the same way JPP is, there wouldn’t be such a losing stench seeping from the locker room walls at One Buc Palace.

“Jason Pierre-Paul, man! He was a tremendous piece to our team,” Jameis said. “I think having him — when our team develops that Jason Pierre-Paul mentality, every single one of us, we are going to be a better team and we are going to shine.”

JPP was a man of his word when he told Dirk Koetter not to worry about him missing voluntary practices last spring, that he would be ready. Koetter admitted he was skeptical of JPP’s words but confessed he was way wrong. The veteran sackmeister was more than ready and finally broke a decade-long drought of double-digit sacks.

It’s too bad his professionalism didn’t rub off on the guys more concerned about their stats or who they were (or were not) covering, among other things.

I couldn’t find the Schein interview but he did a 12 min interview with cbs today and he basically said all the same things. I agree with what you said before Joe, he seems to have gotten his groove back.
Something that stood out when talking about JPP is he said the way JPP acts makes you want to gravitate toward that and away from the soft crowd. Basically saying there is a big talking soft sect of that locker room.
He said they need to stop talking and “be about it”.
Man I am so pumped, if Jameis comes in with the right mindset, and I believe he will, he could do some serious damage in the league this season. I think this is the year he takes that next step!
    Go BUCS!!

  2. Joe Says:

I couldn’t find the Schein interview

It can be found on the SiriusXM website or on the SiriusXM app.

  3. Doctor_berto Says:

Jameis is the perfect quarterback as long as he cuts down on the ints. Fingers crossed Arians can do the trick.

Jamies finally talking like a leader!

  5. Howard Cosell Says:

JPP is a straight up hero for setting an example and trying to change the toxic culture that has plagued the Bucs since Gruden left.
Howard suspects that even tmax respects JPP

  6. Howard Cosell Says:

Lol any reference to McCoys #1 haters trips the filter at JBF

  7. Evo2706 Says:

Speaking of McCoy. Isn’t it amazing now that a true alpha is on defense, McCoy thinks hes getting kicked out of Tampa? I mean kwon is an alpha but McCoy was here long before kwon. So kwon had to show respect. But JPP? Hhmmmmmm its an interesting thing to follow

  8. Bird Says:

JPP is a savage. They need to draft his hopeful eventual replacement this year in round 1 (at least round 2)

Defensive and offensive line x 2 and 1 DB and 1 RB a must
    Free agent DB as well

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Thought this was gonna be yet another Jameis-article, but glad to see that it’s really about JPP getting the recognition that he deserves. Lots of players would’ve probably been dejected after being traded from the NEW YORK Giants in a high-visibility market to the lowly 5-11 Buccaneers in tucked-away Tampa Bay … but not JPP. Instead he grabbed the LEADERSHIP reins on this defense & has already had a huge influence IMO.

Folks have been impressed by Donovan Smith’s AVAILABILITY (not missing a game in 4 years) & I’ll grant that’s impressive. But JPP’s AVAILABILITY last year (and in previous year’s with the Giants) is just as impressive, if not more-so. For a DE to get 933 defensive snaps in 16 games is way into Ironman territory. In 9 of those 16 games, JPP played 94%-98% of the snaps, and in all games he played over 75% of the snaps. Not to mention his incredible ‘contributions’: 12.5 sacks, 20 QB hits, 58 tackles (48 of those being solo) plus 16 TFLs. That’s the definition to me of a defensive BEAST.

But for the folks dissing Gerald McCoy, replacing HIS ‘contribution’ won’t be as easy as many seem to think: 730 defensive snaps in 14 games, 6 sacks, 21 QB hits, 28 tackles (17 solo) plus 6 TFLs. That level of production isn’t worth $13 mil a year IMO, but the average $4-$5 mil DT doesn’t provide stats like that either.

And for those who are wondering, GMC signed his current contract (7-years, $98 mil with $51.5 mil guaranteed) in Oct 2014. That’s the most ever given to a DT in NFL history at the time, and paid him an average of $14 mil per year. It’s was considered by PFF (boo) to be the ‘least team-friendly contract for interior defensive linemen in the NFL’ at the time. GMC’s agent, Ben Dogra, had this to say afterwards, “Gerald is extremely excited to remain with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and he is especially thankful to Bucs owners, coaches, and Jason Licht for working so hard throughout the process.” Aaah yes, Jason Licht … the gift that keeps on giving.

  10. Loyaltotheend Says:

Can Jameis himself “stop talking about it and be about it”…

After every turnover riddled games he’d say “I gotta protect the ball better” yet he continued giving it up like a Nebraska Avenue hooker on Saturday night with rent due on Monday.

    Heed your own words Jameis

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We need to be thankful for any article that doesn’t mention Djax…….so I thought I’d ruin your morning by mentioning him.

  12. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @ defense
Good point about GMC. AS for average DT’s we already got two of them in Beau Allen and Will Gholston and an injured reserver Mitch Ulrein collectively that would cost uswould cost us about 12.5 million to retain next year.

  13. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Jameis needs to stop being Jameis

…… Then maybe we’ll win more

    ###############

Fair points, Loyal, but it seems pretty obvious that Jameis was “about it” and making it better.

Over the last 7 starts, he threw 4 interceptions in 230 passing attempts.
Is that not a HUGE improvement?

  15. AlteredEgo Says:

Shut up Jameis….get your own house in order before popping off about how other players act…

  19. Pickgrin Says:

Defense Rules – that last paragraph of yours is some pretty serious revisionist history. The purpose of which I can only assume is to try and falsely bolster your ongoing contentions that GM Licht is a problem or an idiot or bad for this team or whatever….

At the time of McCoy’s big signing – there was only one DT in the league who could serve as a barometer – or as they say in the real estate business – a “comparable” for GMC – and that was Ndamukong Suh.

So I’d invite you to go to Spotrac and pull up “career earnings” for both GMC and Suh – and compare their year to year career earnings side by side. Its not even close. GMC’s deal was a real bargain compared to some of the cash heists Suh got away with since they both came into the league in 2010 as the #2 and #3 overall picks.

Suh made $25.7M in 2011, $26.5M in 2015, $20M in 2017 and at least $12>$14M every other year.

McCoy has never once come close to making $20M or more in a season. He has been making a steady $12>$14M per year since he signed his deal in 2014.

Expensive for a DT – yes – but nowhere close to the kind of money Suh was getting. So GTFO with this ‘least team-friendly contract for interior defensive linemen in the NFL’ claim….

Licht signed McCoy to a fair deal for both sides. If anything, GMC’s deal was a tad on the “team friendly” end of things when compared to the only true comparable there was for McCoy which was and continues to be Ndamukong Suh….

Sorry – but your anti-Licht agenda was showing a bit too much in this case for my liking – so I couldn’t just let that false contention of yours about GMC’s contract go uncontested without introducing actual facts into the ‘discussion’ for the benefit of those reading who might just accept your nonsense contention at face value….

  20. Old School Athlete Says:

I really like what I’m seeing and hearing from Jameis. He’s growing into the leadership role that the we all hoped he would. Well, all of us except the trolls from the Saints blogs.
I couldn’t agree more about the need for more players to have the fire in their belly that JPP has. The new coaching staff should go a long way toward weeding out the ones that don’t. I want guys that love winning, but more than that, I want guys that HATE LOSING!

  21. BucsFIRE Says:

    AlteredEgo Says:
“Shut up Jameis….get your own house in order before popping off about how other players act…”

    ———

Sorry but that is just dumb commentary. Jameis has NEVER had a lack of the fire, passion and desire for the game that he is describing here in his compliment of JPP as a competitor. His house is most definitely “in order” in that regard.

  22. BucsFIRE Says:

    ben Says:

Pickgrin, I’ve never pretended to be ‘pro-Licht’ because I hold him ACCOUNTABLE for these past 5 years of what I’ve consistently CONTENDED is a mediocre team roster (unlike some who blame it ALL on coaching). But don’t pick-and-choose what I wrote to support YOUR CONTENTION that it’s “revisionist history”. What I DID write was …

“It’s was considered by PFF (boo) to be the ‘least team-friendly contract for interior defensive linemen in the NFL’ at the time.” That quote came from the following article back in 2016: https://www.bucsnation.com/2016/7/5/12097796/gerald-mccoy-s-deal-is-one-of-the-worst-in-the-nfl-says-pff. And BTW, notice the ‘Boo’ after PFF?

I hope I’ve been consistent in saying that the Bucs are in a poor salary CAP position IMO with only someplace between $7 mil to about $16 mil in Salary CAP space to work with (depending on what source you use) to ‘fix’ our roster problems. Every one of our current player contracts was negotiated by Jason Licht & this team’s roster rests squarely on him. Our coaches & assistant coaches have been raked over the coals for not being able to ‘develop’ the talent that they were provided, but that’s hard to do when you only get 2 max 3 years IF you’re working with average (or less) talent to begin with (not that our coaching has been all that swooft BTW).

  25. Defense Rules Says:

Pickgrin … Wrote a response to what you wrote above, but it went into purgatory I guess (like so many others) because it had the link in it that the PFF quote came from. Maybe Joe will let it out of jail before too long.

  26. OneBuc55 Says:

Jameis’ decision making can be questioned at times but never his heart and desire to win…

Jameis has been a winner his whole life…what he’s found out in recent years is how hard it is to get a W in the NFL…The QB gets to much praise after a win and too much blame after a lose…the reality is so many things have to go right to get a win in this league…sure the QB needs to protect the ball but the play-calling has to be good, special teams have to be sound, the the defense has to get stops and turnovers

  27. OneBuc55 Says:

All of that being said if everyone played with the same heart that guys like JPP, Adam Humphries, and Jameis displayed every week we’d never lose a game…I’m pretty sure BA will get everyone on the same page in that regard…

The last paragraph just repeated an opinion by PFF in defense rules post.” IT was
least friendly for defensive interior defensive lineman at the time.” Doesn’t mean
it was Defense Rules opinion and I am pretty sure he knows GMC came cheap
as compared to just about any quality DT signed after him.
Everybody has a right to their opinion but in this case you reading an anti -Licht
sentiment in his post is rather nonsensical.

  30. Widerightandleft Says:

I havent given up on Jameis yet.The forced balls he throws too occasionally are a product of the offensive lines inability to block.
Jameis is a gamer,he wants to win.
Give the guy a few seconds before he has to start running .
Too many times i have watched D.Smith whiff at a guy that has a goiod get off.
Priorities in the draft should be L.T ,R.G .D.E R.T .Reasoning is that Smith isnt worth the money hes going to ask for and Benenoch hasnt lived up to his potential and Dotson as well as he plays is getting up there in years. Find a good FA corner and Draft Will Grier from WV the guy has a great arm and good touch and is a competitor.

  31. Pickgrin Says:

Bob – the last line MIGHT have had something to do with it….

“Aaah yes, Jason Licht … the gift that keeps on giving.”

That plus I see DR (who is otherwise a very intelligent and articulate poster) taking shots at the GM on a regular basis which I mostly view as unwarranted.

DR knows I respect him despite our different perceptions about the job our current general manager is doing – so its all good.

I look forward to reading your response DR….

The lone bright spot on the team. Cannot get rid of this guy.

  33. tmaxcon Says:

    Howard

Yes I’m a fan… jpp punked cancer93 in the best way possible he made that POS career loser look the fraud on Sunday’s. Cancer93 is the most embarrassing buc of all time and not a single meaningful win in his sorry arse career

I stated 6 years bucs would never win a single meaningful game with cancer93 on the roster and once again i was 100% correct….

    Pickgrin

Wins matter not your feelings for a PROVEN punk career loser

  34. Bob in Valrico Says:

Pickgren , I missed the last line but as a GMC supporter I do think his play is slipping somewhat and have to wonder when the Bucs will make a change. That said IMO I’m not for replacing him until there is somebody better to replace him.

  35. Pickgrin Says:

    maxi_pad_ is a beotch –

How about if I arrange a face to face between you and Gerald – so you can call him a “punk” and a “loser” and a “cancer” to his face?

    You game for that?

Of course not – because your an internet troll who likes to call Buccaneer players nasty names from behind the safety of your anonymous keyboard.

Which makes YOU the biggest “punk” and “loser” and “cancer” in all of JBF land….

Carry on trollmaster – surely there are some billygoats coming across your little bridge soon that need to be molested….

  36. Pickgrin Says:

Bob – yea – it wasn’t just about the one post or the last offensive line. DR has a history of claiming that Licht is a bad GM.

And I agree with you that $13M per year is a bit much for McCoy’s contributions at this point and moving forward.

Hopefully GMC is willing to re-do his deal down to about $8M per year so the team has a bit more breathing room salary cap wise. Would be nice if McCoy could not only finish his career with the Bucs – but also be able to finally be a part of a successful and WINNING team here in Tampa Bay – which I believe strongly will be happening within the next year or 2.

Gerald’s stats last year slipped slightly – but he’s still easily worth $7-8M per year for the next couple or three years.

  37. ben Says:

cgmaster … whats with u keep bringing up Mariota ? You LOVE Winston more then you care for the bucs . Maybe with different coaches Winston can become
worthy of being a qb of our fave team .

  38. SOEbuc Says:

    TBbucfan

“We need to be thankful for any article that doesn’t mention Djax.”

Amen. B!tch boy gonna be gone in some way or another next year. I don’t need to hear about him anymore.

  39. tmaxcon Says:

    Pickgrin

did i hurt your feelings little buddy… sucks to fall for losers man. but i hate to break it to you sir the results prove I am right and you are nothing more than an emotional fanboy with a crush on a loser.

  40. AlteredEgo Says:

    walk the walk Jameis….

  41. tmaxcon Says:

    pickgrin

if these losers did not crap themselves and embarrass themselves week in and week out they would earn respect and the well earned nasty names would go away…. but no let’s just blindly support quitters because you have a mancrush on a loser. respect is earned not given because he believes in your cult. all cancer93 has earned is basement titles and the most selfish buc of all time labels. those are facts you choose to deny because you are an emotional fanboy, not a results-driven winner like myself.

  42. JimmyJack Says:

Defense Rules. I told you yesterday that we have no salary cap issues.

You need to realize that we don’t owe nobody nothing. We can do whatever we need to do to fix the roster. There are no contacts holding us back from signing any new player.

Heck, you are whining about McCoys contract. We don’t owe him anything.

Tell me who we need to fix this roster. Paying for their services is extremely easy.

Whatever this team needs to do to fix the roster is not a problem. Not sure why your talking like it is.

  43. tmaxcon Says:

no one in this world is owed a damn thing… especially career losing bucs….

you people with your emotional attachments to losers in a results-driven league is beyond pathetic. it’s downright sad…

no one is owed anything nor has any buc earned a damn thing…

if you emotional softies were running bucs you fools would still be running out that fool 55 into his 70’s with a colostomy bag…. feelings are for the weak… results are all that matter.

  44. Bob in Valrico Says:

Pickgren, I hope you’re right , But i share some of the same ideas that DR does.
I hope that Arians has more imput on free agency. Licht needs to vet players better in the first wave of free agency IMO. The parade of free agents that often
have to be replaced after one year because they weren’t good enough, have a bad attitude or end up on injured reserve will be a step in the right direction.
He has picked up some good additions after the season starts but I think he should work harder to achieve that success in the first wave of free agency even if it only adds one quality player. We just haven’t gotten good enough players by waiting for the second wave of free agency. This team can ill afford player with selfish attitudes like DJAX,BAKER, T J Ward or even Grimes.
AS for retaining Grimes this last year I also blame the coaches for not wanting to move on from him and his style of play.

  45. tmaxcon Says:

    fear losing not the cap

  46. Defense Rules Says:

@JimmyJack … “Heck, you are whining about McCoys contract. We don’t owe him anything. Tell me who we need to fix this roster. Paying for their services is extremely easy.” Not sure where you’re coming from JimmyJack. I’ve said that IMO GMC isn’t worth $13 mil this year based on his PERFORMANCE. I’ve also said that keeping him this year BUT renegotiating his contract down to say $8 mil is fine with me. If that’s whining, then hey, you’re right.

And I’ve already said that we need to ‘fix’ somewhere up to 14 starting/key rotational spots (3 OLinemen, 1 slot WR, 2 RB, 1 backup QB, 2 DLinemen, 2 LBs, 1 CB, 1 Safety, 1 Kicker) based on who’s under contract RIGHT NOW. Filling in specific names this early in free agency is a waste of time IMO (a LOT of FAs will be re-signed by their own teams before we get a crack at them, plus we have no idea what their ‘asking price’ will be).

  47. JimmyJack Says:

And let’s not pretend like it will be hard to replace McCoy. That’s nonsense. We have a Top 5 pick. That’s his replacement.

And no it does not need to be a DT to replace McCoy. That’s outdated thinking…….That’s 5 years ago thinking.

Tampa 2 is finally dead. It will be an entirely different defense all together. You can take a LB at #5, take McCoy off the field and center you defense around the LB.

We don’t need this Tampa 2. We don’t need McCoy……Quite frankly his finesse style won’t even fit in a Bowles defense.

  48. Defense Rules Says:

@Bob … “I hope that Arians has more input on free agency.” Supposedly Dirk Koetter had ‘input’ according to both he & Licht. How’d that turn out? My hope Bob is that Coach Arians has been given the green light from the Glazers to do whatever it takes to ‘fix’ this roster and turn our Bucs into contenders.

I’m convinced that all great coaches have a clear vision of what their TEAM … player roster AND coaching staff … needs to look like & perform like to succeed. Compromise is of course necessary because of the salary CAP, BUT … other successful TEAMS navigate that COMPROMISE maze successfully. Patriots & Rams are two examples IMO who’ll face off against each other tomorrow to see which one was the most successful. Two excellent coaches & coaching staffs with two solid TEAM rosters going head-to-head in the Super Bowl. And that’s the way it should be every year.

  49. Pickgrin Says:

Bob – If you expand that last thought about coaches a bit – you will maybe realize how much influence the coaches have had regarding all these free agent busts that Licht gets fully blamed for. Especially during the Lovie years – but also during Koetter and Smith’s tenure.

Additionally – it helps to remember what a true crapshoot free agency in the NFL is. We tend to live in our Bucs-centric little bubble – but most every team who tries to fill needs in free agency by paying a high price on the open market for a player at least one other team didn’t want to keep – winds up with substantial “misses” compared to “hits”.

  50. Defense Rules Says:

@JimmyJack … “We don’t need McCoy……Quite frankly his finesse style won’t even fit in a Bowles defense.” Personally would rather let Todd Bowles & Bruce Arians determine that, since I have zero idea at this point what type of defense they intend to run.

My ‘guess’ though is that Todd Bowles will be running a hybrid defense based on the roster he’s inherited (part-time 4-3; part-time 3-4). Actually I think that’s what most teams now run in the NFL anyways. Seem to see more-and-more of teams lining up in one formation (say 4-3) then shifting to another formation (say 3-4) … then back again. Great DCs are masters of disguise, and Todd Bowles is VERY GOOD.

  51. Defense Rules Says:

Pickgrin … A LOT of meat there in that last response. I sometimes wonder if my career military ‘upbringing’ shows too much in my evaluation of Jason Licht. I tend to be of the mindset that SOMEONE has to be in charge; someone has to pull the trigger. And that SOMEONE is the one who I hold ACCOUNTABLE for those decisions. Giving others ‘input into the process’ is critical, but SOMEONE needs to ‘hold the whip’ at the end of the day and get EVERYONE marching in the same direction.

And yes, free agency truly is ‘a crapshoot’ like you said. Great TEAMS draft well AND develop those who they draft. Bucs NEED to do a much better job in BOTH of those areas. And I’m optimistic that we will with Bruce Arians in charge.

  52. JimmyJack Says:

Defense Rules……I must have missed the point you were making about McCoy. Apologize for calling it whining.

But don’t worry buddy we can easily get us a backup QB. 2 RBs 3OL and all the rest of the players you said.

Whatever CAP numbers your looking at are useless. A loot of the players you are looking at won’t be here next year……and most don’t deserve to be either. A lot of them are making a lot of money.

It will be easy to address the roster because nobody is guaranteed anything so it won’t hurt the CAP. Off the top of my head the only high dollar players we have to pay next year is Mike Evans, Jensen Marpet & LVD.

Plenty of 💰 left to fix the roster.

  53. Alanbucsfan Says:

The reason most free agents stink is because besides spending 1/2 their time counting/spending/investing their money, they are thinking too much learning a new system. JPP and others like him play their way, which is proven success, regardless of system.
That’s why you build through the draft , and Bucs glaring weakness is OLine because they haven’t prioritized drafting OLinemen.

  54. JimmyJack Says:

You guys will know me when you see me at the tailgate this year.

I will seen dancing right on top of the Tampa 2 playbook. I think they will let me bring my prop folder into the stadium. I will leave my prop on the deck of the Pirate Ship before kickoff one Game 1 so you can wipe your feet with it.

  55. Tbbucs3 Says:

If the Bucs switch to a 3-4 then you really only 1 primary DT and then some quality depth guys and let’s not act like Gerald McCoy is good anymore.

  56. Ryan Overstreet Says:

    @Bucs Fan #7423

Why be ridiculous? I realize it’s a Bucs fan trait, but wholly unnecessary.

  57. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @Pickgrin
Licht has taken credit for Anthony Collins in the lovie regime and you can pretty much put the corners and Conte on Lovie.
Other than that Koetter had said on several occasions that the roster was Licht’s job. My guess would be was as hands off as he was on defense. And Jason Licht has said that he has the final say, probably since the Lovie fiasco. But I still feel he
has to do more homework. It was no secret that Swaggy Baker was lazy and didn’t like to practice. Nor that Ulrein was out with a concussion before he came here. Makes me wonder if he was fully recovered. Although Curry and Beau
Allen were servicable , neither has shown he can be a full time starter. Beau Allen was probably signed as a rotational player. I can’t help but think Curry was expected to start.

  58. Miller5252 Says:

I know everyone is all over the JPP bandwagon, like they should, I’m on it as well! But I don’t want to forget about the signing of Carl as well. I’m really excited about having a really good defensive coach help Carl and JPP be good ends for Tampa for the next 5 years. The way Carl was playing I think he could jump a level up with some good coaching. Good attitude, help from JPP and coaches…. look out. We may finally have multi 10+ sack guys!!

  59. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @BucsFIRE

Two excellent comments on JW…I agree completely. We all make mistakes and JW has made his share…turned me off after AZ.

But the most important thing in life about mistakes is do we learn from them. Perhaps I’m a sucker but as you say after the way he finished last year…and keeping his nose clean off the field I think he has and these comments about JPP just give me more reassurance.

@ Pickgrin, D.R. and Jimmy Jack.

This may be the best thread I’ve ever read on JBF from the standpoint of the posters and their responses. You guys just had a terrific debate with all three of you making excellent points and not taking the disagreements personally. This is just one reason, along with your other posts why I really like your posts…all three of you.

There was no stupid ad hominem or ridiculous name calling.
Thanks to all three of you for the thought provoking debate and the intellect and effort and civility you put into it. You guys rock.

@D.R. I don’t believe you’re in purgatory…I most certainly am for some comments about Kareem that I suspect disturbed the Joes….it’s their site and so I got no problem with their judgment…sometimes disagree with it but again it’s THEIR site.

Speaking of which I wish there was some way I could get you the way to read my first novel. It’s up online but I’d never post it as I feel that would be like stealing free advertising from JBF.
It’s about three Army guys in ’68…starts in Korat and ends up in Bangkok. I feel you would enjoy the first part the second?
I’d be interested to know and it only takes an hour to read.

    @Joe

I have published a book online…I know Bonzai has at least three up online. I do not feel it would be ethical to try and use your site to promote MY stories without paying.

Have you ever thought of a single page of JBF Classifieds where people like Bonsai, Lord C for his band and me for my writing could take out ads and pay you for them? No artwork or real editing any more than our posts…just the freedom to advertise our little projects and pay you for it at an affordable rate? We’d all be combined on one page…like your morning wakeup…no art…or fancy layout so perhaps it could be affordable but still worth your while. I understand if it’s not…just asking.

StPete … “I’d be interested to know and it only takes an hour to read.” OK StPete, you got me. How did you know that the longest book I ever read only took me one hour to read? Not because I’m a fast reader, but because it was REALLY SHORT. And BTW, if you’ve never read ‘Jonathan Livingston Seagull’ you’ve missed a real treat. Only reason I read it the first time is because I heard that its author, Richard Bach, was a fighter pilot. I just had to see for myself that a fighter pilot could actually write.

Have read it numerous times since. Favorite line is when Jonathan (the young gull) asks his instructor (the Wise Old Gull) how fast he can go (in dives). The Wise Old Gull responds with my favorite line … “Perfect speed Jonathan is being there.”

Some day I hope we all reach ‘perfect speed’ StPete (but surely not in THIS lifetime).

I read and like you enjoyed it but that was a lifetime ago eh?

We’re starting to age a bit. LOL

  62. Defense Rules Says:

StPete … Out of curiosity, were you drafted into the Army in Jan 1966? Do the places Fort Ord & Fort Gordon ring any bells? How about Camp Friendship?

  63. Defense Rules Says:

@StPete … “We’re starting to age a bit.” LOL me too … that ship sailed a long time ago.

If I told you the truth you might lose respect for me. So I wanted to fly but hadn’t yet gone through college so your career path was unavailable to me.

The Army was the only possibility. I took the FAST test and passed and was set to fly helicopters. In basic, at Fort Polk LA
the 2nd Lt calls me in and said I qualified for OCS and should be a real officer not a Warrant Officer.

I had tried to get in the Naval Academy and ended up first alternate on one Senator’s list and 2nd alternate on another.
I explained to the OCS louie that 50 men a year qualified to go to West Point from the regular Army and he looked at me like I was nuts. I told him how close I got to Annapolis, he looked it up, got me to provide the telegrams from the Senators and put in an application.

I then moved on to Army flight training at Fort Wolters in Texas…the Primary school. Had to go through four weeks of spit and polish to be a “Warrant Officer”. In the third week after all that crap First Sergeant calls me in and said I was accepted to Fort Belvoir..a year long prep school to prepare me for West Point. I said that’s a big decision Sarge could I call my parents and ask some friends…he said sure…it’s 3PM I leave at 5PM so I have to know in two hours. I said I’d do it…this was in the fall so they stationed me out on a lake…I had second thoughts…a year at Belvoir…4 years in the academy…and they had jumped the service requirement up to six years by then. All in all it would have been about 11 years of my life…might as well make it at least 20 to retire which boiled down to did I want to be a lifer or not? Got cold feet and when they lost my orders to Belvoir I didn’t say anything and by the time they found them Belvoir has been in class for two months so they let me out. There’s a funny story if we ever get together.

After that I was like Sgt. Bilko…a guy who knew how to work the system. So I finished my two years and left.

There’s more but we need to get together for a beer to finish.
    LMAO

I went into basic in Feb ’67…Texas in May of that year…got sent to Thailand in May the next year and because I”ve been a doubting Thomas and a bit of a thrill seeker and thought I should help out I volunteered for ‘Nam got there in January of 69 again decided I really didn’t want to spend the whole year there so I took my discharge in February. If I told you all the things I got away with…well my Father always said I had the luck of the Irish…he was correct.

This is why I feel guilty when I visit the black wall in DC or converse with REAL Vets like you and my best friend in Michigan who was a real ground pounder. I’m embarrassed but a Vet in DC told me at least I gave them the chance to ship me up to Hue. Again the luck of the Irish and so I was in the rear are at Bien Hoa.

I’m sure you have some real stories instead of how to get over stories. When I watched those F-105’s take off from Korat I always felt a little guilty with you guys putting your butts on the line. When Trump said that about McCain I went nucking futs.

I have nothing but the deepest respect for guys who flew over Vietnam. Korat had a fighter squadron as well but those “Wild Weasels” if I remember correctly…the 105 jockeys flew over the North looking for SAM batteries which were highly defended. Not all of them returned at night.

To this day…you guys who were up there getting shot at…well I’m glad you made it back. You must have had cods the size of bowling balls!

    Defense Rules –

Richard Bach is my favorite author!

Love Jonathan Livingston Seagull – but my favorite book of all time is the one he wrote just after JLS. It’s called – “Illusions – The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah”. Check it out if you’ve never read it – probably more like a 2 hour read – but well worth the time and effort….

All of Richard Bach’s books involve flying.

Also – an interesting factoid if you weren’t aware, Richard is the great great great great grandson of Johann Sebastian Bach…
