Schiano Man talks about his rookie season

Lavonte David confessed he’s a Schiano Man. But that doesn’t mean the Bucs linebacker agreed with everything Schiano did.

David appeared with the Barstool Sports gang in Atlanta this week and opened up about playing for former Bucs commander Greg Schiano.

The man who took over the Bucs in 2012 was known for his unshakeable rules. And David was proud to say he liked Schiano, even though he may have gone a bit too far sometimes and didn’t treat Bucs players always like adults. David cited a ban on cell phones as being one example.

David entered the league at the same time Schiano came to the Bucs. And on the night before his first game, he found out he would wear the green dot, meaning he would be calling defensive plays. In his first NFL game.

“What the f-, how you are going to throw that at me like that?” David said laughing.

David also recounted the Geno Smith Play where David got flagged for a late hit on the Jets quarterback at midfield on the final play from scrimmage in an opening day loss to the Jets. The penalty allowed Nick Folk (yeah, him!) to kick a 48-yard field goal with seconds left for an 18-17 win over the Bucs.

David said Smith had one foot out of bounds on the play and that all game, Smith would act like he was stepping out of bounds only to dart inside for a few extra yards. David added the thing that upsets him more about the play is that the next season, a runner had to be completely out of bounds before a late hit could be called.

After all these years and all these games…..and losses, that play still bothers me a great deal…..I can only imagine how Saints fans feel about the no call…..they’ll never ever forget it.

That game still sticks in my craw. I bought a bottle of Josh wine, had a Buc sign outside my house to tweak my next door neighbor, a huge Jet fan from Brooklyn. I just knew we would win that game.
Michael Vick used that same move on Mr. Derrick Brooks in one of our first encounters with Vick early on. Vick got a first down after faking like he was going out and made 55 look bad. Tried it later in the game and got absolutely smoked by Derrick. Lesson learned. Joe, ask Derrick or Vick about that game one of these days.
I had a still shot from that game on my phone clearly showing Smith had one foot INBOUNDS when he got hit. It was a candy ass call, and set the tone for that season unfortunately. I got a lot of abuse from Jet fans here, and also from Giant fans on Schiano’s first game after the victory formation last play vs Eli.
Still….David never played better than he did for Coach Schiano. Lets get that guy back!

  3. jerseybuc Says:

Was talking about getting David back to where he was. My god, wasn’t meaning getting Schiano back!!!!

  4. Loyaltotheend Says:

    Joe

David’s first NFL game was against the Panthers not Giants…

David hasn’t been the same player since Schiano was canned. Bucs coaches have wasted him for too long

  5. 813bucboi Says:

gotta treat men like men until they give you a reason to do otherwise….GS most likely knew the culture sucked and tried to rapidly change it…..sounds like he went in not wanting to get to know the players as individuals or men but instead only saw them as players…..maybe from the outside looking in, thats what i though BB coached his players but BB had the resume….

thing is, players(men) dont respect being treated like children…..especially from someone who was new to the NFL…..they want to be respected as men first and players second…..GS had that part backwards imo…..

its all water under the bridge now…..the same bridge smitty fishes from!!!….lol…

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  6. 813bucboi Says:

like everyone, that game still haunts me….that play killed the season….i remember our run defense being great that year….david played with his head on fire all season…..if i remember correctly he got snub from the PB that season…..

that game is the only reason why root against Geno trash a$$…..lol….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  7. StoutGospel Says:

Schiano was bloated nonsense. LVD needs to get his salary in the $7 mill per range, or I’m wholeheartedly a fan of cutting, maybe re-signing after market dictates.

HEY EVERYONE……GO look at the thread “The Way He Watches The Film With The Defense”.

Good stuff there in the thread.

    Go Bucs!!

  8. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

This is what #7423 has been saying all along

We may already have all the players we need

If BA can inspire everyone to play their best, we could win a championship

  9. BigMacAttack Says:

Refs have Screwed the Bucs so many times for so many years it’s pathetic and almost criminal at times. They’ve done this many times with the game on the line. It’s demoralizing for the players and coaches. I wouldn’t say it’s the reason so many have failed but it’s been blatant hate for the Bucs many years. As fans were like what the f%^* did we do. Took away a playoff shot from Rah. It’s happened so many times for so long that you couldn’t even begin to compile the list. It’s hundreds. It’s the reason I stopped watching basketball years ago. All I do each season is hope it will get better and the refs treat us the same as every other team. One standard, not your faves or your buddyazz teams and ones you despise. Almost all Refs are lowlifes.

The only people that blame the refs are the people that lost!!!!

    Stop being weak Bucs fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much can I sell saints fans tears to “real” Bucs fans for???

  14. mike10 Says:

Maybe we can bring Schiano in, solely as The Lavonte David Consultant

  15. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yes, the Jets game was horrible. There was another game, the Bucs played the Giants in NY in 1999. There were 2 or 3 calls that were obviously BS, reviewed them and they still went NY’s way. I’ve said since that game that there’s no doubt in my mind that Ed Hochuli is a New York Giants fan.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

The Geno Smith flag was fake news, just another union slob ref getting his check from the NFL to give a W to the team in the bigger TV market.

  17. Slugglife Says:

Let’s just agree that if the a Bucs cornerback had hit the saints receiver early and to the head that there would have been yellow laundry all over the field.

  18. Old School Athlete Says:

Rod, you took the words out of my mouth. Well, finger. Kind of like the no-call in New Orleans.

I will never forget that play. The rest of the season was already over after that game…you just felt all gour of the wheels fall off in that very moment and knew that was it.

I can’t remember but was that during the replacement refs?

  22. PriMech54 Says:

This was so cool to watch. Lavonte David is by far my favorite current Buccaneer, and one of my favorites of all time (hence the 54 in my tag). I’ve never seen him show his personality like this ever in his career, I don’t think. I enjoyed it.

I think he is both severely under rated and also misused often on the field. I miss when this dude was in a downhill, attack the line of scrimmage style of defense; he was a pure game wrecker. He’s still in my opinion one of the premier linebackers in the NFL though and I have faith that Todd Bowles will know exactly how to deploy him. Fun times ahead for this Buc fan.

YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH! WITHOUT A DOUBT IF THAT WAS THE BUCS WE WOULDA BEEN FLAGGED. I THINK US N THE AINTS GET SCREWED BY THE REFS MORE THAN ANY OTHER 3 TEAMS COMBINED H$LL ANY OTHER DIVISION DOESNT GET THE SHAFT AS MUCH US US N THE AINTS 🤔🤦‍♂️

  24. Bob in Valrico Says:

LVD is the most instintive ,talented linebacker on the team. One of Smitty’s biggest mistake was to spend so much time with Kwon and not including
LVD . His comment about Duffner actually conferring with LVD unlike other coaches still gets me PO’ed

  25. Dave Says:

Stop blaming refs but fans. Ridiculous.
That said, when they call a late hit as a player is just barely out of bounds, it always irritates me. Just what David said, you never know when a player is going to be near the sidelines like they’re going out of bounds and then go forward for some more yards. It puts the defender in a very bad situation – get flagged or allow several more yards.
