The Bucs need a cornerback to replace Brent Grimes. And Bucs fans were dreaming of one player in particular.
In November, veteran Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson of the Cardinals asked for a trade as the Big Red were in the midst of spiraling towards the first pick in the draft.
With the Bucs signing new coach Bucco Bruce Arians, who in turn hired Todd Bowles as defensive coordinator, the old Phoenix gang was getting back together. Bucs fans, seeing the need for a corner, were hoping the team could attract Peterson, who might well want to reunite with the coaching staff under which he had his greatest success.
Apparently, that’s not going to be. Nathaniel Fain of the Arizona Republic writes Peterson made a surprise announcement at a golf tournament that he’s had a change of heart and is staying put in the desert.
During Wednesday’s Waste Management Phoenix Open Annexus Pro-Am, after sticking his tee shot next to the 16th pin at TPC Scottsdale, the Cardinals cornerback grabbed the microphone and demanded that the music be turned down. He had a message for fans, and he wanted everyone to hear.
“I just want to apologize to everybody for asking for that trade in the middle of the season,” Peterson said. “I’m here to stay, baby.”
So there goes a big fish.
Joe is of the mind the Bucs have spent (wasted?) too much draft capital on corners the past three years. There is a much bigger position to fill on the defensive side of the ball at the No. 5 pick and that is a pass rusher for the next generation.
If the Bucs still need a corner, then go buy one. A first round pick and two second-round picks on corners the past three years is enough. Time for the new staff to develop these guys or go shopping with Team Glazer’s AmEx Platinum.
Funny. Joe hasn’t heard malcontent Bucs receiver DeSean Jackson rescind his trade request from last season and apologize to fans like Peterson did.

Jackson was not drafted by us and hates being an afterthought he’s not an apologist he’s just out for self. But glad hes staying in Arizona so people can stop talking like the only way coach can be successful with a new team is to get players from their old team and I don’t see any team who turned it around over the last few years saying it’s becaus of the new coach bringing in old players. If you a teacher then teach your system. I don’t see a offensive coach thinking he needing his old corner to be successful anyway

Find a way to get consistent pressure up front – play to our young CB’s strengths – and watch how serviceable Davis, Hargreaves, Stewart and Ryan Smith suddenly become….

Isn’t that the same thing with Desean Jackson. He knows he won’t get the ball from Jameis on regular basis/any basis so he is doing everything and anything to get the heck out of Tampa. Some stuff may be true / but a lot I’m sure is fluff to get out. And apparently is getting a new agent and is no longer with same agent as Jameis. That says a lot.

You’re right Pickgrin; Bucs can’t afford Peterson. But Joe’s also right; we NEED to sign a veteran CB in free agency, one who can start outside for us.
One of the things that interesting to me is that our LBs, CBs & Safeties seem to be quite fragile overall. Looking back over the last several years, we’ve lost an awful lot of players in those groups to injury. Constantly having to rotate players in can’t help in terms of the chemistry & communications required to perform well as a unit.
Of the 4 CBs you mentioned, I think only Davis is a legitimate starter at outside CB as of right now, although Ryan Smith MAY break out this year with some quality coaching. VHIII in my mind could be a decent nickel CB (and outside backup). Two of our safeties, Whitehead & Adams, also seem to have good potential at nickel (I’m not very high on Stewart as a CB, although he MAY make a decent safety).
Signing at least one quality, veteran CB who can start outside and provide some much-needed FIELD LEADERSHIP in our Secondary is vital. Personally feel the same about our Safeties AND LBs … we NEED better FIELD LEADERSHIP in those 2 groups. Preference is to sign a quality, experienced MLB rather than draft a rookie high who can start right away (Kwon did a lot of talking, but his walk never matched his talk IMO).

Has anyone mentioned Kareem Jackson. He’s serviceable and probably not terribly expensive. He had 17 PD last year way more than anyone on this team.

The free agent CB will come off of the Jets roster!!!!!! could even be Darryl Roberts who played multiple positions for Bowles with the Jets!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We may be able to afford about $5 mil for a CB…..but keep in mind….we need to find a LT, RG, RB, MLB, K, Backup QB……with just a little cap space.
Jettisoning GMC, Djax, Curry will help a bit…..that is about $30 mil.

I don’t know who thought getting Peterson was even an option. He and Bell both will require premium capital we just don’t have. Even if we cut all those proposed cuts fans are asking for we are still barely in the middle of the pack for salary cap. We barely have enough to resign our own. At MINIMUM we need DL, LT, RG,RT(upgrade),CB,S,LB – Things could change if we resign Kwon, Smith or both but for now they are FA’s.
I am not even the biggest fan of resigning D. Smith right now but when you start to look around at FA and the draft he, unfortunately, might be a little bit better than them all. Nonbuc sites are calling him one of if not the top LT in FA.. Which scares me to think about.
The way the cap situation is I think Licht needs to knock this draft out of the park.

Tampabaybucfan — That’s what is scary. 5 mill for a corner is like nothing. Grimes, for example, was 7 million(what a joke). A younger even just average corner is probably at least 10 mill a season.

I was thinking about this the other day while discussing the “State of the Bucs” with my dad. Does anyone remember who our best corner was in camp last year? It was MJ Stewart. Why? It was because he was winning one on one matchups in drills and scrimmages. In camp, we didn’t run that prevent 15 yards off the line crap. We went straight up head to head most of the time. I did NOT like the Stewart pick at all last year, I thought there were other needs like O-Line available with that pick, but I am willing to give him some time. Shoot I am willing to give anyone time that played in Mike Smiths defense. He ruined so many guys careers and turned the fans against so many players, all because of his stupid outdated bend and then break defense. This year will be interesting. I would love to see us get Oliver if available, but if we took LT in first and RG or tackle in the 2nd, I wouldn’t cry. Actually, I would move Marpet back to RG and draft a LG. We need a LB at some point. We can handle some of this with FA but we need to protect our QB and open some holes or we are going to be in the same place we are now. JMO

Really Joe, other than Evans and Marpet, can you think of any other draft picks that have improved their skillset under the former regime? I have a feeling that this coaching staff will coach up many of the guys we already have. Again, recall how Mr. Glazier mentioned twice developing and coaching up these players. Obviously, JL and the Glazers recognized that there was a deficiency in that area

When are people going to learn. Nobody will want to play for some old guy who is going to shut it down again if things do not go his way and he has success. This organization will only get some stability when Byron becomes HC. Until then it’s going to be chaos as usual.

i agree….
we cant afford him…..and playing to our CB’s strength will do wonders for the defense and their confidence…..if they are put in position to do what they do best, they wont be thinking and reacting instead they’ll just be playing ball….
the player we need to sign is frank clark or demarcus lawerance…..we need another productive veteran DE in case JPP goes down….nassib and curry would be great depth…..

I’m sure Patrick Peterson’s thought process is akin to his former head coach Arians. At his age he doesn’t want to make a lateral move to play for a team that appears to also be in full rebuild mode. If he were to move I bet it would be for a potential contender. If there is anything the last 10 years of FA signings have proven it’s always been about the money. They come in, collect a paycheck and move on.

I was in no way sold that kool-aid the PP was going to be a Buc if we didn’t trade for him last year. I really do not believe the Bucs will be a big player in FA for CB, I can see Jason possibly trading a #2 for say, Jalen Ramsey (why not, our 2nd round picks may be better used on a proven player), possibly trade back in the draft and recover the 2nd round pick or get an extra 3rd if there are takers, then you draft the best available with the first and fill needs after that.

I mostly agree with you.
I would only add that with a new coach, we still need to find out how he feels about free agency.
Personally, I’m hoping he will balance Licht out…be good in FA evaluations, which is Licht’s biggest weak area.
I’ve always felt that when shopping for free agents, it’s like shopping for fresh fruit. If it doesn’t look or feel right, don’t buy it. And if that means not filling a need…well then, better to gamble on young undrafted FAs than to gamble on guys like Chris Baker.

imo TM and DJS have the same skill set along with whitehead….all 3 play better down in the box….we need a true FS….thats why i think adams will make the team….

Both Mathieu & Swearinger are interchangeable in Bowles System.
And both are straight-up dogs on the backend – so no biggie.
Now, If they can acquire both of them – to complement our current group.
Bowles would have a field day – disguising and matching coverages.
Flexibility is key in his scheme.

Some games Yeremial Bell played Big Nickle (Star) for 60% percent of the game. Others he played Free for 30%. The same can be said for Mathieu, Jefferson, and Johnson. Hell, he even had Bucannon playing weakside inside backer. You never know what the hell your gonna get, with Todd Bowles running the backend.

“VHIII in the slot”! I wouldn’t count on VHIII for anything right now. IMO, he needs to prove he even belongs on a team, let alone a #3 CB. He can’t be relied upon being healthy and he was being routinely abused by opposing WRs. What’s changed?
At least the other DBs have a potential “upside”. I’d have a ‘Plan B’ in place for VHIII.

I think VH3 an a lot of other players will become the players we all wanted an expected them to become I mean we have seen flashes I just don’t think the coaches the Bucs had did very good I’m so pumped up with Coach BA Coach Bowles an Coach Leftwich
