Bruce Arians = Jimbo Fisher
January 10th, 2019A lot of NFL folks believe the idea of pairing new Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, may be a home run.
The two have the very much the same mentality when it comes to passing and that is why many NFL people envision their success.
That’s not exactly the case with Daniel Jeremiah. The NFL Network analyst who used to work in the football offices of the Browns, Crows and Eagles appeared on the “Rich Eisen Show” today and he had a different take why Jameis should do well with Arians.
Jeremiah believes Arians is an NFL version of Jimbo Fisher, Jameis’ coach at Florida State.
“I think he is going to infuse Jameis Winston with a lot of confidence,” Jeremiah said of Arians. “He’s going to believe in him.”
That last comment gets Joe’s attention and it isn’t the first time Joe’s heard something like this.
There is all sorts of chatter out on social media that former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was never fully behind Jameis. (He did bench him, of course). But Koetter often was very vocal in his defense of Jameis and was quick to praise him in a public forum, though that didn’t stop him from criticizing Jameis from time to time.
If the Twitterverse is right, that suggests that Koetter’s boosterism talk of Jameis was just empty words. Koetter never struck Joe as a con artist so Joe can’t buy into that.
Now Joe knows who Jeremiah talks to — a lot of NFL suits — so maybe there is fire associated with this scent of smoke?
You can see Jeremiah’s full reaction in the video below.

Koetter was the lone dissenting voice on drafting Winston back 2015. Regardless of what Koetter said publicly I do not believe he truly believed in him. According to the QB whisper mutual trust between and coach/qb is vital to the success or failure of the pairing.

I like the old Dirk Koettwr a lot..The same Dirk Koetter that Brandon Myers once said
“dirk has been the man since he.came through the door”
Dirk changed a lot Joe. The change happened when he realized Mike Smith was hopeless as a DC and knew at that point it was already over.Thats when Dirk changed
January 10th, 2019 at 8:15 pm
The one thing that Dirk Koetter is that Bruce Arians will never EVER be, is someone who has a defeatist attitude.
“Jameis is going to be here a lot longer than I am.”
“If I knew how to fix it I would.”
“I don’t know how to fix it.”
“Fire Mike Smith and then what?”
Dirk Koetter is someone who gives in when the going gets tough. Bruce Arians gets going.

Media member: how much pressure is Jameis under?
BA: None. (adlib) Jameis is a god with heart! unlike this dude I ran into today working out at OBP in his Geisha outfit. He thinks he’s got a chance to play with us lmao. It’s no risk it no biscuit not no ice cream no let every QBs and RB run the ball down our throats while we take pictures with the QB who just scored 30 points on us in a half for the win.
At least that’s what I heard. Lol
And Tkras if you’re reading this may I remind you that Winston once again have the defense a lead with 5 mins left in the 4th against ATL and your favorite buc gave up the booty again like always. Ijs
#NoMoreIceCream #WeLactoseIntolerant
But seriously I really want to know who is going to tell BA they can’t play bc their fingers hurt? Oh to be a fly on that wall.
January 10th, 2019 at 8:22 pm
Joe, when Jameis continues his ways as a turnover machine, will you consider not calling him America’s quarterback? Please? Needless to say, I would like him to be stripped of that title if he has any off the field issues.
January 10th, 2019 at 8:25 pm
Listen…..I am a Jameis supporter but I’d like to see some evidence that this discussion is taking place elsewhere with other young Quarterbacks……
Sure, the coach is important…….but…at some point the player has to perform.
I believe this will be Jameis’ best chance for success…..
We can take some turnovers but we absolutely must have a defense that can help make up for them.

Weather you believe in jameis and his skill set or not , we all are going to see if he cuts the mustard after only 1 year with Bruce. Think about it , jaboo has been in this leauge now for 4 seasons , Bruce can take all of jaboo’s short comings and make the best out of them & at the same time he can take all the positives and improve on Thoes as well..won’t take long for Bruce at all imo ! I’m feeling 10-6 this year , 11 -5 the next and 12-4 after that because of how he will work with jameis + Todd running the defence and by gosh they will find a competent online and a good running g back to take the job from barber…let’s all believe ! Go bucs ! NFC championship in 3 years !
January 10th, 2019 at 8:41 pm
Help me please!
I just don’t understand how a fan can overlook a defense giving up 30+ points per game and then blaming the QB.
Didn’t Nick Foles throw 2 ints against the #1 defense in the league and still win the game?
Again, imma need most of ya if not all of ya just to be quiet for the next 5-6 years please and thank you.

I thought of Jimbo today after watching Arians talk about Jameis. I remembered how much swagger Jameis used to have at FSU. He has lost that in 4 seasons. You could see it in his demeanor. I suppose losing can affect your confidence and as someone has already said here, Dirk didn’t know what to do to fix things. Arians has a proven record and does not seem like he will lose confidence. Jimbo and Arians are the same in that way. Dirk is not. Dirk could not keep confidence when things went bad. I think this is the difference in being a really good Head Coach and falling short as Dirk did.
January 10th, 2019 at 8:44 pm
I don’t care about what the media says…Koetter was behind Jameis until Fitz started winning, and Koetter’s job was on the line.
Seriously, how many times had we heard a ton of media rumors only to have them later revealed untrue?
January 10th, 2019 at 8:49 pm
Well said, Schwifty. Experience matters, but confidence and competence do too.
January 10th, 2019 at 8:54 pm
This is so overhyped, but honestly, I’m not surprised. I hope BA’s hiring of Todd Bowels fails, his style is not a fit for the players we currently have, in my opinion. I’m not impressed so far… but it is early, so, with that said I won’t be quick to judge until I’ve seen a seasons worth of work put in by the soon to be “BA crew”. Bucs fan for life!
Go BUCS!

Winston has been begging to be coached hard. I believe a coach he can interact with like his days at FSU with Jimbo will yield positive results.
January 10th, 2019 at 9:00 pm
This is so overrated, but honestly, I’m not surprised. I’m not going to be like everyone else and give this guy the crown for doing nothing so far. Being a longtime Bucs fan I need to see some results before I follow suit. You know what I hate about this blog… how up and down everyone is on it. One minute all are talking smack on coaches or players, then the next you’re giving them praise. Typical idiots who know nothing and think they have the answers.
Go BUCS!

Jameis was 9-7 his rookie year and the last 3 seasons once the defense starting playing better he had strong finishes to the seasons. He has shown improvement every year. You can see the excuse forming by all the Jameis doubters is going to be that he only became a great Qb because of BA. Notice most all the coach hires are made to match up well with their teams Qbs.
January 10th, 2019 at 9:03 pm
Even from the outside looking in I never thought Koetter fully believed in Jameis. Sometimes actions and body language speaks louder than words.

When the going gets tough, Bruce gets going the heck out of Arizona.
I finished it for ya.

@Waterboy
“Even from the outside looking in…”
What are you trying to imply? That the rest of us were on the inside… lol. We’re all on the outside looking in bruh, and I thought Koetter did a great job trying to get the most out of Winston. It didn’t work out, and I’m not surprised, the kid is and always has been a turnover machine, even with Jimbo at FSU. So let’s not get too excited that BA can change that. BA = Jimbo, which still is Winston = Turnovers, I don’t see anything that screams better than Koetter, or improvement for that matter. But, time will tell.
Go BUCS!

@Joseph Mamma
Lmao!
Thank you for pointing out what people seem to always forget when an overrated/overhyped change happens for the Bucs. Every time we get a new coach it’s the same story… talk trash about the old coach and get overexcited about the new guy.

Oh, I forgot

This is the playoffs and Super Bowl for bucs fans at least till free agency and draft. Some fans like myself want a winning team, but in the absence of winning I like to wear my armchair GM and HC hats
January 10th, 2019 at 10:23 pm
“Arians is an NFL version of Jimbo Fisher”?
JaMarcus Russell, Christian Ponder, E.J. Manuel, Jameis Winston
Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck, Carson Palmer
January 10th, 2019 at 10:30 pm
Lubby
Key words “NFL version”….Jimbo is a college coach and all of those you mentioned were very good college QBs.
January 10th, 2019 at 10:31 pm
Joe I’m not sure what you were watching but heck often my wife asked why does Koetter dislike Jameis so much? It was clear to anyone with eyes that Koetter did not like Jameis and he was playing him just doing what he thought he had to. No excuses for any dumb plays Jameis made BUT it is not easy to play well for some one that clearly does not like or believe on you. I fully expect to see a different Jameis this year both on and off the field.
January 10th, 2019 at 10:53 pm
I don’t buy that Koetter didn’t believe in Jameis. Honestly, Jameis probably never got that much tough love in his entire life, and he was overdue for it.
Koetter never trashed players, never threw them under the bus. He just coached. If the Bucs has a roster of mature professionals, things would’ve gone differently
January 10th, 2019 at 11:44 pm
Coach them hard. Hug them later.
Risk it for the biscuit.
But I’m a sexy sixty-six.
He has swag, is called the coolest coach.
Bruce Arians is the American Dream of football. And I don’t mean that like Joe called Winston America’s Quarterback. I mean Bruce is like the American Dream Dusty Rhodes. He’s funky like a monkey.
People here mentioned the Its a Football Life about Arians…so I went and watched it (along with every interview he’s done since hired by the Bucs.
This guy…seriously…it’s hard not to fully buy in. We fans have faced disappointment and gotten used to it. That’s about to change.
I remember when Gruden first got hired. Everyone was excited, but no one expected him to win a Superbowl right away.
If it’s going to happen again, Bruce is the sort of man who will do it.

I agree with Ndog…
I don’t think Dirk believed in Jameis either and let him swing in the wind constantly.
1. Played him injured and said he was fine. Meanwhile buc fans think JW is just horribly playing
2. Modified and transformed JW to a pocket passer mostly.
3 Sided and uplifted Djax…to the extent of mas king him captain
4.Put him in bad positions constantly
5 Waited to long to put him in and then benched him too long
6 HE kinda defended Jameis…but he defended him more at the end of the season ..duh
7. I could go on
8 They weren’t the right FIT
January 11th, 2019 at 6:00 am
Bonzai- you finally sippin’ the kool-aid?!
He’s not a perfect coach, but he might be the perfect coach for the Bucs right now.
Let the show begin!
January 11th, 2019 at 6:39 am
NDOG your right. My wife ask the same question, and I did to. You can say what you want but Dirk was not a Winston fan and it showed. He talked the talked but didn’t walk the walk.
January 11th, 2019 at 8:07 am
Loved watching the football life. Favorite part was when Peyton Manning said he came off the field and BA asked him why he did not throw the pass? Manning said the window was only this big and BA said that is open in the NFL.
January 11th, 2019 at 8:13 am
Man, knowing what we know now, DJax walked all over Koetter.
January 11th, 2019 at 8:37 am

Great point about the reason DK benched Jameis. Most here will view that as a huge mistake. I’m not sure I agree.
JW was a different player at the end of the season…his attitude and judgement had improved significantly and coincidentally. That could have come from a lot of things…his new kid…the suspension…but I believe getting benched the first time in his career…getting TRULY disciplined for the first time in his life had a profound effect.
Whatever…I think your take is probably right. Self preservation would have certainly motivated DK to take care of his own career. He made what he thought was the best decision to win. Wrong yeah but not because he had something against JW…by then it was total self preservation.

winston was 6-10 as a rookie unless your talking about dirk when he was a rookie HC…..
anyways, dirk was just in over his head imo….

When people stop calling the Dallas Cowboys “America’s team”, Joe can stop calling Jameis “America’s QB”. Until then have a coke and a smile and…..well U know the rest.
January 11th, 2019 at 9:55 am
I think BA is more like Sam Wyche in terms of how bad the bucs are and the juice he is bringing to the organization. The bucs super bowl begam with Sam Wyche building this team and he does not get enough credit
January 11th, 2019 at 3:05 pm
Caleb
I think you’re mostly correct.
Only thing I would say is, At the very least BA will call somebody down unlike Klueless who would bend over and then ask ” Thank You Sir, may I have another?”
That alone is a huge improvement. He either fixes JW or he doesn’t. If he does..great. If he doesn’t, well he wouldn’t be the first to try and fail. I believe he’ll move on quickly if JW doesn’t improve.
