Bucs Say Kris Richard Interview Is Complete

January 6th, 2019

Our beloved Buccaneers completed a fourth head-coaching interview today.

At least that’s the total made public.

As expected, Cowboys defensive playcaller Kris Richard was grilled by Bucs representatives, presumably Jason Licht and Team Glazer.

Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards and two-time NFL Coach of the Year Bruce Arians also have been interviewed by the Bucs.

No other interviews are rumored or reported to be planned.

As Joe reported Friday afternoon, the Bucs plan is to announce their 12th head coach no later than Tuesday. Arians is the choice, but he’s not the choice until he signs a contract.

What a wild situation it would be if the high-energy, highly-regarded Richard wowed the Bucs brass and led them to an emergency all-nighter on who to choose. Yes, there is a timetable here for the Bucs. They want to be swift and diligent, not get screwed like they did by Chip Kelly back in 2012.

  1. Easy Says:

Don’t understand the love for this guy. He gets canned in Seattle and goes to an already set defense in Dallas that is clearly ran by Maranelli. PASS

  2. StoutGospel Says:

    JOHN. HARBAUGH.

    Go get him Team Glazer.

  3. Cb13 Says:

    Please hire Kris Richard !!!!

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This may have been the customary obligatory interview……

  5. Tbbucs3 Says:

Ya let’s see how he does with the Bucs defensive personnel. The Bucs defense is not the Cowboys defense.

You hire a coach to fit a teams strength, the Bucs strength is offense.

    So Bruce Arians it is.

  6. ATrain Says:

What about the rumor Bell May come toBucs

  7. BucEmUp Says:

I hope.its neither harbaugh, I hope its not this guy. I only want bruce

  8. Not there yet Says:

This offense will be strong Regardless of the team hiring a defensive HC. That said there should be no need for further interviews there are three worthy candidates already interviewed, pick the guy who stands above them all and let’s get in with it already. EB, KR, BA I don’t care which one lets just move on because I know for sure sure two of the three guys are head strong coaches who will control the team with authority unlike Koetter.

  9. Sunny Says:

Chances r they already have the coach they want and r doing some interviews for the Rodney rule

  10. Sunny Says:

Also picking the minds of the games best can’t hurt either

  11. TexBuc Says:

My vote is still for Arians.

  12. Waterboy Says:

I’m still curious to know why he was fired as the defensive coordinator of the Seahawks. Bucs need to really do their homework before hiring him as head coach. Now bringing him on as the defensive coordinator might be an option since he’s a DB’s coach in Dallas.

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

The Rodney rule. For guys that get no respect! lol

  14. tnikkichristy Says:

I wonder if John Harbaugh is in play now given the loss. Honestly I don’t see much of a future with that QB.

  15. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

    Arians HC
    Richard DC/assistant HC
    How sweet would that be?!

  16. Waterboy Says:

Rooney rule only requires 1 interview of a minority coaching candidate this is the 3rd so that requirement was met awhule back.

  17. Pryda..sec147 Says:

    Pass I’ll take BA !

  18. JJV Says:

Maybe they did three Rooney interviews in case they get left at the alter three times then have to reset the hire process three times. Now that would be having a triple plan in place just in case.

  19. tnikkichristy Says:

Harbaugh is still in play after the horrendous performance of his QB.

  20. cw_buc_crazy Says:

    Bucs love fired coaches….pathetic.

  21. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

    Arians please.

  22. SteelStudBuc Says:

This guy calls the plays for Dallas. They overhauled the defensive secondary and this guy worked magic. I’d prefer to see him over Arians… but if they can get him as D coordinator I’d be happy.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Has anyone actually looked at Bruce Arians head coaching record?

    He’s barely over .500.

If he’s the hire, as Joe states, then I’m not at all confident he will turn this team around. He made it to one conference championship in his HC career.

I seriously do not get why everyone is so high on Arians. Is it because of Winston? Hah. Sure…having a top ranked offense will help…oh wait…

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Waterboy Says
“Rooney rule only requires 1 interview of a minority coaching candidate”

Unless t was changed the last couple of years, it actually requires two minorities. But we’re covered either way.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    SteelStudBuc Says
“This guy calls the plays for Dallas.”

Actually, no he doesn’t. Rod Marinelli does…the Defensive Coordinator.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Waterboy Says
“I’m still curious to know why he was fired as the defensive coordinator of the Seahawks.”

Because as the DC, he had the worst pass defense in the league.

  27. Mike Evans Goat Says:

    Bonzai
U are still wrong. Richards calls the plays in Dallas.

And for those thinking we will get him as a DC are crazy. He’s already the ipso facto DC in Dallas. He will come here as a HC or not at all

  28. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Bonzai what’s your deal with Richard? You seem to have it out for the guy.
It is common knowledge he has called the plays all season.
He also had a top 5 defense two of his 3 years and the one he didn’t Sherman, Thomas, Kam, and Avril were injured.

  29. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Also Dallas is having its best season it’s had since Rod Marinelli took over. What changed?
    Kris Richard calling plays!

  30. Dirks Great granpappy Says:

    I want the chiefs guy

  31. Ndog Says:

Hey coach Koetter how is it possible for the Eagles to win tonight? I mean their QB had 2 picks to the other QBs zero. I mean that is 100% of the game right? This is one of 1000 reasons you got fired

  32. Mike Evans Goat Says:

    Bonzai
Who is your choice of HC then?

  33. Warrenfb12 Says:

    No more coordinator projects

  34. Fix-it-already Says:

    I hope it Harbaugh(Michigan) Bruce arians 2nd

  35. Darin Says:

    Dewey
    LOL. Good one.

  36. Stanglassman Says:

Arians HC win percentage is .608 or 9.75 wins per season 16 game season.

  37. Jim Says:

Well, if as Licht says, we have the best offense in NFL history, and we continue losing due to a worst of the bad defenses, doesn’t it make sense to get a defense guy like Richard? Just wondering…

  38. Tampabucfan88 Says:

cw_buc_crazy Arians wasn’t fired stupid he retired

  39. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Bonzai wants McCarthy who has 11 wins in the last 2 seasons, with Aaron Rodgers.

  40. Waterboy Says:

If Rod Marinelli carries the DC title but Richard is considered the DB’s coach but calls the plays then what exactly is Marinelli’s job responsibilities and what is Richard’s? Sounds like they are paying 2 guys to do that job.

  41. Steven007 Says:

Alaskan, Bonzai needs some aloe for that burn…

  42. Bucs3 Says:

    Cw_buc_crazy

What fired coaches have the bucs ever hired as HC?

  43. DayOnePaul Says:

Bruce Arians was an assistant (offensive coordinator) for the Colts. The head coach at the time there was Chuck Pagano. Pagano got sick. Leukemic, and Arians was made interim head coach during his absence and recovery. They won 9 games and went to the playoffs during his time at the helm, after winning only two games the season before. When Pagano returned, they of course gave him his job back. And they proceeded to lose their first playoff game. Arians was then offered the gig in Arizona.

He went to the Cardinals as the head guy. He had one season at .500, one season with one more loss than win, and three winning seasons, including three playoff years. He had some health concerns while there, and his wife was bugging him to retire and to come home. He did.

Now two years have passed and he’s moved into the broadcast booth. Reports are that he’s working just as hard preparing for games in the booth as he did on the sidelines. And he’s still never home.

He’s been the NFL Coach Of The Year twice.
He’s won the Super Bowl twice as an assistant.
He has a .608 winning percentage as an NFL Head Coach.
He was Peyton Manning’s first NFL QB coach.

And just in case…his two COTY awards were with two different teams.

  44. Defense Rules Says:

OK, finally figured it out. The ONLY way any of this makes sense is if Bruce Arians is the target, and has been from the beginning. That’s the ONLY reason I can think of why the Glazer Boyz didn’t fire Lapdog Licht at the same time they fired Dirk Koetter.

Bet is they talked to Arians months ago, and offered him a king’s ransom and total control to coach the Bucs (hey, they did the same thing with Lovie & apparently with Jon Gruden before that). But Arians is smart, and I bet he insisted that they keep Licht on be HIS Lapdog. That’s actually not bad, because it’s only when Lapdog tries to act like a REAL GM that things head south.

Hiring Bruce is fine. He can be President of Football Operations, General Manager and Head Coach all rolled into one for probably a couple of years, create a top-notch staff with a future HC-in-waiting being trained up under him, then step back after a couple years to focus on just the President of Football Ops position. Brilliant strategy Glazers; absolutely brilliant. Just as long as Lapdog doesn’t try to play real GM anymore and screw up the plan.

  45. TexBuc Says:

Jason Licht’s 1 year contract extension was reported by media on August 1, 2018. So unless this B. Arians plan was agreed upon before the season started the Glazers seem to be somewhat satisfied with his job performance.

  46. Mike Evans Goat Says:

    Waterboy
    Basically they are lol

  47. Mike Evans Goat Says:

Rod specifically works with the front 7. And Kris works with the DBs and calls the plays on game day

Has anyone actually looked at Bruce Arians head coaching record?
    He’s barely over .500.

I have his NFL record as 58-33-1 for a .636 winning percentage but maybe that is wrong. What do you have?

  49. JesusHChrist Says:

    BA

  50. Kobe Faker Says:

    ” LOL! You Sheep

Ron M is the defensive coordinator of Dallas and calls the plays!!!

    Not Richards the db coach

    Richard was a sympanty hire

    THIS IS A FACT

Carroll was going to fire Richatds as DC but instead gave him a chance to get hired somewhere else …..No team wanted to hore him…

Carroll fired him becsuse no one wanted him and hired Ken Norton jr. Later Dallas hired him in the offseason this year

    THOSE ARE 100% FACTS

    GOOGLE IT”

    Kobe Faker

  51. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I think that from the list of guys we interviewed, it seems they have already decided to hire BA and are talking with the other guys to see if they are interested in being a coordinator/coach in training. I personally think EB from the chiefs would be a great guy to fit that role. His specialty is RBs and we desperately need help on that front.

Fixing our offensive line should be our #1 goal this offseason. Giving Jameis time and protection could go a along way with his turnovers and obviously a better line would help in the run game.

  52. JimmyJack Says:

If the coaching hire goes as expected we can all forget about Richards.

I’ve never thought Richards was the right guy for the job. If the team needed a total rebuild it would make a lot of sense. If Kris Richards does get a HC job it will probably be for a team that’s rebuilding.

But that’s not what the Bucs are doing. We are built to win now. We need proven leadership at the top that has the ability to step right in and know exactly what to do. We need an entire coaching staff that works well together and knows how to put all their effort towards the same goal.

A rookie HC is not what the 2019 Buccaneers need. Sorry to tell all you Richard fans that.

I can even take it a step further to say if Arians turns us down the team should still be looking for an experienced HC with a proven track record.

  53. SteelStudBuc Says:

Kobe they were talking about how he calls the plays last night vs Seahawks and during the Bucs game too.

  54. Cs2 Says:

Jimmy jack, if BA turns down the offer there will be NO QUALIFIED candidate other than EB from the chiefs and that’s it.

  55. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

I agree with Alaskan. Hire Arians as HC and Richard’s as DC. In the process let Arians help get Richard’s ready to become the Bucs head coach in couple of years, when Arians steps down.

  57. Brandon Says:

Unfortunately, Arians will likely be the choice but the D will because 3-4. Its unfortunate because the only good front 7 players we have are 4-3 specific. JPP left NY and Arians’ former DC James Bettcher because he didn’t fit. Nassib is a solid 4-3 base DE. Our LBs are all run around 4-3 LBs. Only Vea might be a good 3-4 fit.

  58. King C Says:

Someone will hire Richard, but not the Bucs.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Miami picks him

  59. Todd Says:

They probably hire arians tomorrow they probably only interviewed the others in case arians backs out and has a change of heart

  60. Cb13 Says:

McVay,Nagy, Pederson all former coordinators before they took head coaching jobs just saying

  61. OneBucPerson Says:

I wish Richard well and if he really is a good coach then I hope he gets a chance at being a HC, just not for us at this moment. Would prefer more of a sure, experienced thing in Bruce Arians.

  62. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

For experienced head coaches, my preferences are 1) Jim Harbaugh 2) Mike McCarthy.

Vic Fangio is the guy I think is an up and comer, much like Tony Dungy was.

Looks like the only one here who actually used factual data is Kobe.

Richard bombed as a DC. It’s in the history books, no point in denying it.

So far as who called the plays in Dallas…sorry, but you are mistaken. There are tons of sideline shots of Marinelli calling the plays.

As the Arians, people keep saying he had ‘health issues’, but that’s as far as they go. Half of you didn’t even know it was cancer. He had to undergo treatment for it and survived.

My knock on Richard is that he’s not the real deal, and his history supports that claim. I don’t expect people who want him to believe me…they only go by what’s in front of them…and do no research.

Here’s what I know. Coordinators who fail as head coaches he a history of being on bad teams..for example George Edwards. Coordinators who become successful as head coaches have a history of being with multiple successful teams. Such as Vic Fangio.

And the danger comes when a team make a hire based on a short body of success, as opposed to someone with a proven track record.

Given a choice between Richard and Arians, I would take Arians.
Given a choice between Arians and Jim Harbaugh, I would take Harbaugh.
Given a choice between Richard, Edwards, Flores and Fangio, I would take Fangio…and maybe Flores.

  63. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says
“Bonzai wants McCarthy who has 11 wins in the last 2 seasons, with Aaron Rodgers.”

Actually, no. Rodgers was on IR for a year, and he returned too soon the second year and struggled.

But, you know, stick with your baseless opinions.

  64. Mike Evans Goat Says:

    Bonzai
I like u and I usually like your takes as well, but u really need to look into the Richard calling plays thing. Google is your friend. It is a well known fact that Richard calls play.

  65. Bill Says:

    1) Jim Harbaugh is an old school guy, not much different than Koetter. There’s nothing wrong with focusing on toughness and execution, but you need more than that to win a SB.

    2) Bruce Arians is the safe pick. He has the credentials and the relationship with Licht. The question is, does he actually fit with Winston? Arians has always had good/great deep ball passers, which Winston is not. So, can he fix JW? Will he be around long enough to develop someone else? Is he capable of adjusting to a league that may have already passed him by? I think all of these questions are legitimate (and he may be able to answer them).

    3) Bieniemy and Richard require a lot of homework. How important was Bieniemy v Reid? How much has he learned from that experience? Will he be the next assistant in a long list of assistants to fail to expand on his teachers methods?

With Richard, it’s equally hard to assign credit. Was he carried by the Legion of Boom, then fell apart when the established talent disappeared? The recent success in DAL may be due to him, or possibly the health of Jaylon Smith and the emergence of LVE. Apparently, he’s the passing game coordinator too? That’s not exactly a strength of the DAL offense tbh.

Personally, Bieniemy is the most intriguing candidate, but there’s a lot of important details that we simply don’t know.

  66. Wiscobucsfan Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai, You do realize that Vic Fangio is absolutely not some up and comer lol The dude has been coaching football since 1979. There isn’t a player on our roster that was born when Vic Fangio started coaching. But who knows maybe your right maybe he’s an up and comer will find the fountain of youth and coach for another 20 years.

  67. GhostofSchiano Says:

I take it no one here has watched videos of this guy working with his players? Actually coaching, teaching technique. Etc. The guy is good, young, he would be a great hire.

Nothing against Bruce but at 67 how much can he give, how much can he motivate?

    In Licht we trust?

  68. Kobe Faker Says:

“Unbelievably, Buccaneer Bonzai and Kobe Faker agree. Ron M is the playcaller and you can see it every Dallas game. Does Richard add some input? Probably

Richard the originator of the legion of Boom? how did the 2 seattle defensive masterminds, Gus Bradley and Dan Quinn just get passed over

Again Kobe agrees with Bonzai that 1st time coords success hit rate is bismal. Kobe believes the 2nd time might truly believe be the perfect time for their HC chance again. If that is the case

Jim Swartz and Gus Bradley, who are lights out these past few years as coordinators, should be our hires”

    Kobe Faker

  69. stpetebucsfan Says:

Listen I hear all of you who continually rag on JW’s deep throws.

Not saying he’s a league leader in deep touch but again…what are you guys seeing when JW Hits ME and Godwin at the very edge of the end zone with decent coverage and JW nailed them for the score. Yeah that’s only two plays but I see lots of NFL QBs missing on long throws and other throws for that matter.

I just do not believe it’s nearly as black and white as some posters have portrayed it. He certainly has superior arm strength…his decision making abilities have been in question for all four years except for the end of this season.

Perhaps Arians can “fix” JW’s “supposed” deep ball inability.

  70. Mike Evans Goat Says:

All u morons have to do is type in “who calls Defensive plays for Dallas cowboys?” In google and there is LITERALLY 10 articles talking about Richard calling plays. Smh. Can’t fix stupid
