Chris Godwin Says Doubt Crept In
January 1st, 2019Second-year receiver Chris Godwin got a little candid with Joe after the season finale against the Falcons.
Godwin dropped two consecutive clunker games in December and Joe and a lot of fans were doubting him.
After all that talk from Dirk Koetter and Jason Licht about how Godwin is a No. 1 receiver talent, it was hard not to wonder what the heck happened. Godwin had just one catch on 13 combined targets against the Saints and Ravens.
Godwin bounced back against the Cowboys and Falcons and Joe asked Godwin if he struggled with his confidence after those two rough games.
He did.
“When you’re not playing well you just kind of second guess yourself. That was something I was going through, and that’s a battle I was fighting by myself just to get back on track and try to get back to doing the things that I know I can do,” Godwin said.
The 2017 third-round pick noted that confidence battle was a first for him as a professional.
“I hold myself to such a high standard that when I’m not playing well, you know, I’m just like, ‘Man, I know this isn’t me.’ Climbing out, getting out of my own head, isn’t always easy,” he said.
Revealing stuff from Godwin. A lot of players wouldn’t admit publicly to struggling with confidence.
Just like in 2017, Joe’s glad Godwin finished 2018 on a very high note with a 114 yards and 2 TDs against Atlanta. The Bucs likely will need him next season to be a true No. 2-receiver.
With 59 catches for 842 yards and 7 touchdowns for the season, 22-year-old Godwin should have inspired confidence in every Bucs fan.

Dusthy what on Earth are you talking about?
Evans is a beast no doubt. But as mentioned in the Article, Godwin had a very respectable season for a #3 Reciever with 59 Catches 842 yards and 7 TD’s.
Humphries had his best season yet with 76 catches 816 yards and 5 TD’s.
O.J. Howard was taking the league by storm before going down to another unfortunate low blow but still had 34 Catches for 565 yards and 5 TD’s in only 10 games.
And then in limited action Cam Brate had a quiet year from a catches and yards perspective with only 289 yards on 30 Catches, but still caught 6 Touchdowns.
We are good to freaking go as far as pass catching weapons are concerned. And Peyton Barber has shown me that he’s solid. Solid enough to where the only thing that’s truly keeping this offense back is the right side of the offensive line, the run-blocking of the O-line as a whole, and Donovan Smiths inconsistencies with effort and his propensity for getting beat by speed rushers.
If we can at the very least have a new RG and RT next year who don’t totally suck, we’ll be poised to have one of the very best offenses in the entire league.

Evans, Humphries, Godwin, Brate, OJ…and BoBo Wilson had a bigger impact Sunday than DeSean has had since opening week.
Just get me an offensive line to slow down the pass rush so Winston has three seconds to go through his progressions, and we can establish a running/play action game. A good coach here can do a lot with just that increment of improvement.

Humphries is a versatile WR who rarely drops passes. Outside of him though you are right, not much more there.

Duthsty must have never heard of Humphries, OJ and Brate.

Every time I start to doubt Licht….a player like Godwin causes me to pause……there are others….UDFA Hump, Brate, Auclair…..The Nassib acquisition….the JPP trade……Jordan Whitehead & possibly Carlton Davis.
Vita Vea is starting to look like a really good pick.
Licht needs a spectacular 2019…..
We need to see Rojo become the player he should be.

I agree with the need for better offensive line play to open up the run game and subsequent to that, play action. The bucs also needs a 3rd down back with speed nd elusiveness.

With MeSean gone Justin Watson will have a chance to fight for more playing time. His speed isn’t too far off Jackson’s

Amen to DayOnePaul.
Fixing the OL by the new head coach plus the right quarterbacks coach will make this a killer offense. Incremental is a good word here! Drastic or exceptional improvement is not required for this aspect.

Good that he went through this, remember Evans with the season of drops. So glad he was able to end the year with 2 games on the upside. He is solid, we should really groom Watson for a backup now and hope to see Adam signed too.

The Bucs have excellent receivers in Evans, Hump, & Godwin. The backups aren’t to shabby either Bobo & Justin. WR is by far the strongest position.

Licht nails the late rounds. Imagine the production he could get by making wise selections in the 2nd.

Take off the gloves, don’t use them the entire offseason, can the practice catching wet balls for the next 6 months. That is where you need to put in the work. Godwin is a perfect #2, but you can’t have your #2 being shutdown by not being able to wear his gloves because it’s raining.

Nobody has mentioned him much but I believe Bobo is about to break out. DJAX gone maybe Bobo gets a few more targets.
January 1st, 2019 at 10:59 pm
I like BoBo an Watson an I’m Excited to see RoJo come in next year with a new attitude an Drive to prove everyone wrong
