“The Glazer Family Has Been Fantastic With Me”

December 29th, 2018

Dirk Koetter channels Hyman Roth.

There is speculation out there that Team Glazer has already told Bucs coach Dirk Koetter his fate and the three-year Bucs head man has known he won’t lead Tampa Bay after Sunday for some time now.

If that is the case, Koetter is putting on a pretty good front.

Last night Koetter made his final weekly appearance of the 2018 season, and maybe final as in never again, on “Late Hits” co-hosted by Alex Marvez and Adam Caplan, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

The obvious elephant in the room are swirling rumors that Koetter is a dead man walking as Bucs coach. Marvez asked Koetter whatever decision Team Glazer makes, if he would like to learn about it sooner than later. In the past, Team Glazer has had a different timeline in making coaching changes than many others.

“Of course,” Koetter said explaining he’d like to know about his status with the team next week. “I’ve got a number of assistants whose contracts are expiring and they are anxious to learn their future. It’s a weird dynamic when you have players and coaches with contracts expiring and they have families. It is a different situation but it is a profession that we all picked.

“The Glazer family has been fantastic with me. They want to win. They have given us the things that we need to win. They will make the decision that they feel is the best for their team. I mean, they are the owners.

“Whatever they decide, that’s what we will go with. I would love to finish out my contract and to keep coaching in Tampa. But, that is not going to be my decision. … Whatever is going to happen after [Sunday] is going to happen. [Team Glazer] will make the decision that is best for the club.”

Marvez and Caplan then began asking Koetter if he enjoyed his time in Tampa. And maybe because Koetter didn’t want to get emotional, or maybe because Koetter wanted to keep the focus on the game against the Dixie Chicks Sunday, it seems he’ll have no remorse or angst with the Bucs if he is let go next week.

“This isn’t the time to get all sentimental or anything,” Koetter said. “[Laughs] I am one of the luckiest guys in the world. I am a head coach in the NFL and I coach a great group of guys and I have a tremendous coaching staff working with me every day, and I work for a great organization and a great league. We will see what the future holds.”

Joe is of the belief it is better for everyone involved, ownership, management, Koetter and his assistants, if they hear the news one way or the other Monday morning. That way people can get on with their lives, get new jobs and turn the page.

Very pragmatic approach of Dirk, but it is a business the Glazers are running, not a social outreach, and the business is indeed about Wins & Losses.

Let’s get the candidates flowing on some good threads to come!

Glazers go get JOHN Harbaugh! I would think a 2nd round pick in 2019 and a 4th round pick in 2020 with $5 mill cash thrown in, might get JOHN to Tampa! Then pay him $10 mill per over 6 years with full control.

    Organization Overhauled! JOHN Harbaugh!

  2. Mike Says:

As disappointing as this team/staff has been, I don’t see any coaches out there that excite me one bit.

  3. adam from ny Says:

what would be cool is if dirk survives the purge on monday…and stays on with the agreement that he and jenna do a half hour weekly show called “the dirk and jenna show”…

she will make him nuts for a full half hour every week and you can see seam blowing out his ears…this would be better than bucs football…”the dirk and jenna show”…let’s get it signed sealed and delivered…who cares about football when you can have entertainment like this!

  5. Defense Rules Says:

Mike, I chuckled at your comment (“I don’t see any coaches out there that excite me one bit”) because neither do I. And regardless of who the next HC is, he won’t have a chance unless this roster is significantly overhauled. More than anything else, this team needs LEADERSHIP … on the management side, on the coaching side, and on the field. LEADERSHIP however takes time to develop & gel from what I’ve seen in my career. Teams that turn around quickly seem to just be missing 1 or 2 pieces, not the whole enchilada.

Bucs face a daunting task IMO. Gutting EVERYTHING could very likely yield the same result that Lovie brought us … DISASTER. And yet NOT gutting everything just assures more of the same IMO … LOSING. Big risks ahead, and I for one hope that the Glazers START the process by picking the best ‘football mind’ out there to manage our ‘reconstruction’. Who that is depends on THEM … it’s got to be someone they trust totally. The ‘cost’ of hiring such a person may well be giving him total control (similar to what Bill Belicheck has with the Patriots), but I personally hope not. Only time will tell which direction the Glazers choose to go.

  6. wombat Says:

I hope he gets another year, just saying….. just to piss off the media who grovel in this sort of stuff. Just like the ppl calling for Tomlins head in Pittsburg, you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone!

  7. martinii Says:

The probabilities of finding and hiring a coach that will turn this team around quick enough to satisfy this fan base are no different than Koetter’s predecessors since Chucky left. Don’t expect miracles, just another list of names to learn. Thanks and good luck Dirk.

  8. Pete I Says:

    Dirk = 19–28

  10. Getaclue Says:

Say what you will. This team hasn’t gave up like it has with other coaches and we are missing a lot of players on defense.

  11. Buc believer Says:

@Pete 1…. just LOOK sat those numbers!!!! Licht 27-51 MY GOD!!! That is disgusting. And yet the authors, and owners of this site have to my knowledge not called for Lichts firing! Truly Truly remarkable. With a loss on Sunday he will then be in the same category as Joes other favorite GM. Mark Dominik. Hell Joe quotes him and uses him as a source enough. Makes me question Joes sobriety at times.

  12. buddy Says:

We always want the coach or star player who is NOT here. By October of last year the Tampa and national media was starting to float the rumor of Chucky. By early December Chucky had been anointed new head coach in waiting. Dirk never had a chance. Be careful what you ask for, you may get it.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How many pieces are we really missing?

A case could be made that turnovers were the greatest impact on our W-L…..
Were those turnovers due to the talent level? Were they due to coaching and poor practice & game prep?

    We need a couple of Olinemen……a CB….Probably a RB.

    Do we need a QB?

With some changes, we have the money and draft picks to fix the holes.

We lost a lot of winnable games because of turnovers.

  14. Jean Lafitte Says:

And if he doesn’t get fired Monday you can damn sure bet on the media going negative and throwing a hissy fit. They can’t stand to be wrong. The blood thirsty click generating traffic and drama is what they thrive on. Do the Glazers actually run this team or is it ran on the media’s viewpoint and propaganda?. Media personalities sometimes are worse than lawyers and sharks. As long as we always have the negativity by our own media hacks this team will never have lasting success.

  16. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

This is not rocket science , it is football. Bring in a dyed in the wool football guy to be President of Football Operations and give him the keys and the checkbook. TONY DUNGY is that guy , he knows the personnel both off and on the field , and has the respect of coaches and players. TONY DUNGY will fix this hot mess in short order.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

@TBBF … “We need a couple of Olinemen……a CB….Probably a RB. With some changes, we have the money and draft picks to fix the holes. We lost a lot of winnable games because of turnovers.”

I love optimists TBBF (I actually used to be one until these last several years rooting for the Bucs). You listed 4 players to ‘fix this mess’. We apparently see a different ‘fix’ because I see the number of needed players as being probably 3-4 times that many.

Offense NEEDS 3 OLinemen (LT, RT, G … remember, Donovan is a FA), PLUS 2 RB (Barber is the only keeper), PLUS a backup QB (who MIGHT end up becoming the starter if Jameis fizzles next year). And you could add to that probably 2 backup OLinemen, and hopefully re-sign Hump as our slot WR (if we don’t, need to address that position via FA or the draft).

Defense NEEDS 3 LBs (Kwon is a FA, as are Taylor & Lynch, and Beckwith may or may not be back, no way to know for sure at this point). Then add 2 outside CBs (Davis is a potential starter next year but he missed a LOT of time this year), PLUS at least 1 starting (experienced) Safety. Might want to add in 1-2 DEs just for kicks (preferably via the draft). Of course, all that assumes we keep GMC for another year (if not, add 1 DT to the list). Grabbing a real kicker would be nice too.

So by my count our ‘reconstruction’ requires 9 offensive additions, 8 defensive additions (minimum) and 1 kicker. The immortal words of Oliver Hardy chastising Stan Laurel ring true yet again … “Sure is another fine mess you’ve gotten us into” (Jason Licht).

  18. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    @Defense Rules

What is your assessment of Kwon Alexander? Would you bring him back?

I am curious what is ceiling is and how good he can be. I love the fire & passion that he brings to the D, and he seems to play with speed and a high motor. But he also seems to miss some assignments and tackles.

    Curious as to your thoughts.

  19. Pistol Pete Says:

If he gets canned for a single reason, to me, it’s was his failure to terminate Mike Smith after last season.
That single decision, the continued putrid defensive play in 2018 and finally that Bears first half performance, cinched his fate for me.
    Pistol

  20. Not there yet Says:

Stop looking at the bucs record and saying lichts name. This team does not need nor should there be a freaking roster overhaul. Love these people who are giving dirk all this credit for the passing offense but not the guy who brought the weapons in the blame him for the horrible run game as if Licht is coaching and continuing to play benonoch. I want everyone gone plain and simple because it’s an underachieving roster. You don’t start off the way this season did then suddenly say they don’t have talent that’s just stupid it’s bad coaching. They weren’t making the penalties and the line wasn’t playing bad at the beginning of the season so what happened

Lichts first two years he didn’t have control of the roster because of Lovie who was the idiot who gutted the roster the first year and put us in the mess we are in and you wanna so that again? We had enough talent to compete at the start of the season people are just blaming Licht because for some reason refuse to admit Koetter has no clue what he is doing. Dominick and Licht had had garbage coaches I don’t know why anyone even continues to compare the records of gm’s who had the worst coaches in team history

  21. Bob in Valrico Says:

Only one person has mentioned it, but Rich Biassachi might be a good hire. you need good players on special teams. Most of them need to be future DB’s or LB’s.
Licht is stockpiling WR’s ‘ IMO and not future defensive players.Just as an example I watched Justin Watson standing upright and trying to arm tackle a
returner. Defensive players know how to break down and wrap up a runner.
Where are our future defensive players,Jason Licht. You have snookered this team because you have focused on offense too much.

  22. Not there yet Says:

We hit on Sapp, broke in one draft. Ronde, Lynch, Dunn, Alstott and a few others within years of each other. We’ve done nothing since by way of drafting those type of hall of fame talents. We had those hits yes but that’s a low percentage of hits still and gm’s aren’t supposed to hit on every pick in the draft and who the hell is drafting cornerstone players every single year? Please stop playing Madden franchise mode then coming here to talk gm’s

Yes, Pete. I agree that the whole Mike Smith fiasco is the single biggest element that indicted Dirk Koetter for me.

  25. Jcl Says:

Licht is the biggest problem! Dirk isn’t great but his scheme on offense is dominating the league. Jameis suspension / QB controversy didn’t help and should have fired Mike Smith last year. If defense were better like it is now would have won a couple more games early. Licht draft track record is horrendous! Constant misses without even mentioning Agauyo. Taking Vea over Derwin James was last straw for me. I also hated Hargreaves pick at the time because knew he was too small to be outside CB in our division with Julio, Thomas and huge panther WRs. Picking Evans was a no brainer too so no credit for that imo. I give him Godwin but jury still out. There are a lot of his picks on other teams or looking for work. I want licht out first then let new GM decide what to do at HC. We need to change the culture so it has to be a guy like Harbaugh or Mccarthy who know what a winning culture at the NFL level looks like.

Dirk will be just fine…as a coordinator. He’ll probably be fielding calls from a half-dozen teams (at least).

  28. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^ I hope you are right, RyJo. I would really like to see Dirk land on his feet as soon as possible.

Preferably not in the NFC, and definitely not in our division.

  29. Ndog Says:

People we need to look at this from the other side like he was not our coach. His resume says he produced a passing attack that is very very good. But he did not establish a running game, he did field at least an average defense ever, he has a VERY undisciplined team and he could not deal with dominate personalities in his locker room. So if that was the resume of a guy outside this organization would you want him?

Ask yourself that and that answer is the answer to if he should be our coach next year.

  30. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

I don’t know, though. Dirk seems a little frazzled these days. He may want to take a year off and just chill, before getting back in the fire again.

  31. Cobraboy Says:

I chuckle when I hear folks claim what the Bucs need is a President of Football Operations.

Exactly how is that different than a GM? Is it a figurehead position?

If folks think hiring the *right* coach is though, why is hiring the *right* GM or *right* “President of Football Operations” any easier? In Real Business, the higher you have to hire an employee, the more difficult it is to find the *right* people; it is far easier to hire an effective VP of Operations than CEO.

I fully expect a lot of head-chopping on Monday. That’s just how the NFL rolls: the Greatest Coach in Franchise History is always the next guy hired. At least for two or three seasons. At least this is what the pathetic, low-information Buc “fan base” has been conditioned to expect. Hire–>Fire–>Hire–>Hooray, the Next Great Coach. Rinse and repeat.

I don’t see this team that far from being special. This team had 3 significant problems: A crap DC, injuries and turnovers. The first was dealt with fairly early and at the height of the defensive injury bug (and I am NOT of the impression a team can control injuries. They just happen.) If there is any judging to go around, it would be the decision to keep Smith, And that decision was hailed by 95% of the fan base as well as the Buc Chattering Class aka pundits like on JBF. SAll across the NFL the Smith decision was hailed as “the greatest off-season move.” I wrongly thought so, too. I find it hilarious that NOW, after this team Nd half the NFL if you aske each team fan base) underachieved, the same Chattering Class that praised the Smith retention are now condemning all those who made that decision.

Injuries at LB, DL and DB badly hurt a defense that had no margin of error. The Smith scheme was poor, no doubt. It was sickening to say the least, and I was highly critical of how that defense might be the worst in NFL history. I do give props to Duffner: he took a disaster and somehow salvaged some respect. At the beginning of the season the Bucs D could not stop anyone. At the end of the season stops were common and the defense began to look “normal.” Not good, not even close to great, but “normal” by NFL standards, normal enough to have won a few more games earlier in the season. The D still needs huge improvement, but we’ve seen enough to imagine how it might look with more solid BD play and a full crew of LB’s (I think this is a position of critical need.) IMO, the DL came into its own the last 1/3 of the season. That said, I could make an excellent case for a gutting of the defense, coaches and all. I am not 100% convinced Duffner is The Man, but with his choice of players he may very well be.

I AM 100% supportive of a complete trashing of Special Teams. That part of the game has been pathetic for many years. Get rid of the coach, assistants, kickers, snappers, kickers and start from scratch. Santos was a fine pinch-hitter—compared to predecessors—but he lacks the leg strength to make the kicking game a top unit.

I am of the belief that outside the defense turnovers have been a real problem for the offense. It starts at QB. It’s one thing to fumble on a QB hit, that’s gonna happen. But many of the interceptions by either QB were off the Blind Pig sort: inexcusable. And too many players, RB, TE and WR’s, just dropped the ball. Again, inexcusable. And I for one am not a Winston fanboi. He is OK, but he is who he has always been at FSU and as a Buc: a turnover machine. That is who he is. It’s in his DNA. And that will never change. You either accept that fact and live with the mindless turnovers that counterbalance great plays, or you move on to a guy who doesn’t turn the ball over with such frequency.

Bottom line: I would be completely satisfied if we learn Monday that the entire D, ST staff and Warhop have been fired, and all other assistants are given a one-year extention. There is too much good in this team to completely gut it. Let this staff and Licht have a “make it” year: they perform well or they KNOW they’re gone on Black Monday 2019.

  32. Ndog Says:

By the way that sounds an awful lot like Mike McCarthy as well. No thank you I’m him for me.

  33. Ndog Says:

Cobraboy just one serious question you say Jameis can’t stop the “mindless” turnovers but again seriously when is the last one he has had?

  34. Cobraboy Says:

@ Ndog: I look at his 6-year track record.

He may go a game or two without one then have a several game flurry.

IMO, Winston has cost the Bucs many wins since he’s been in Tampa, including this season.

    All are undeniable facts.

I am a fan of team sport, not an individual player fanboi.

  35. Stevbobucsfan Says:

Bucs have a 1 o’clock game Sunday at home. They should cut ties with Koetter that evening so he can move on if they’re gonna fire him. They should wait for the assistants contracts to expire giving the next HC a chance to interview them especially Monken and Duffner . Just my opinion

  36. Troy Says:

I’m tired of hearing about Dungy doing anything personnel or operations related. It’s not what he does or has done. He’s not qualified.

As far as Dirk goes, he admitted that he had the pieces to win and failed. I don’t think that’s true, but I think he lost plenty of games he should have one strictly by being out coached.

  37. SOEbuc Says:

You’re a horrible HC with a bad group of guys and a terrible coaching staff in a terrible organization in a rigged league.

  38. SOEbuc Says:

    Troy

Or Derrick Brooks. So many have said that but I didn’t know if they were joking or not. LB position hasn’t changed too much over the years and if it has, I think DB would be able to adjust. I would really like the chance to see him as a LB coach. It’s not like he would ever be blamed or not be looked down upon by true Bucs fans if we had a terrible defense because we will remember he was a captain on one of the best defenses of all time and has been a long time community contributor in Tampa Bay.

  39. Mike Johnson Says:

IF Only Dirk Koetter had not been so hard headed and fired Pressbox Smitty at the beginning of the season. We probably would not even be talking about losing jobs. Bucs had more than there fair chances to end up 9-7 or 8-8. Sometime Loyalty has its downfalls.

  40. Defense Rules Says:

Cobraboy, that’s the most wound-up I can remember you ever being. Some GRRREAT analysis & positions … you’ve given everyone a lot to think about.

Regarding the President of Football Operations, I too have mixed feelings about that (the owners stay the same in any event), BUT … there are a number of really good ‘visionaries’ out there who I think could help the Bucs re-establish a much-needed identity. Big picture thinking if you will. I never saw that from either Allen, Domenick or Licht, but I’m convinced Rich McKay provided that during the Dungy years. And yes, he did it as the GM here, although in Atlanta he’s functioned as Blank’s President of Football Ops I believe. In our Bucs history, it seems like there’s often been disconnects between the GMs & HCs. Don’t know if a Big Kahuna above them would prevent that, but seems like it’s worth a shot at this point.

As far as this team being ‘special’ we obviously disagree there (and mediocre personnel is the primary reason I believe Dirk was doomed from the start IMO). We’ve got more ‘holes’ right now than we had when Lovie inherited the team in 2014.

And Demon, I like Kwon, just NOT as a MLB. I’d re-sign him in a heartbeat at the right price, but not as our primary MLB. He’s an outside LB, and a VERY good one IMO.

Ok Cboy , let me break it down in simpler terms. If you read my post , I said give TONY DUNGY the keys and the checkbook which equals TOTAL CONTROL , no figure head there. The Glazer boys and their inability to select the right men for the HC and GM jobs is the main problem that this franchise has. The culture of any organization starts at the top , and with TONY DUNGY you are getting a Hall of Famer that exudes values and class. DUNGY will tell you that GOD and FAMILY come before football , that is the guy I want running the franchise.

  45. Buccfan37 Says:

The Falcons are going to throw all over the Bucs. The Bucs need this win for what exactly?

  46. Doctor Stroud Says:

I’m sure that Team Glazer wants to win on some level, but their modus operandi is chaos and uncertainty. They felt emboldened in this way of thinking after they fired Tony Dungy and then won a Super Bowl. They got rid of Gruden when they felt that things were “stale” under his regime. How long did Raheem and Schiano last? Then, they fired Lovie only after two years as a way to ‘Licht’ a fire under the team. When that wore off, they gave Gruden a place in the Ring of Honor, which stirred up all those rumors that Koetter’s days were numbered. If Licht sticks around, he must have a naked selfie of one of the Glazer brothers! #PaidFloridaVacation

  47. TOM Says:

I agree with whoever said Licht should get fired before Koetter. He has to be the worst GM I.ve seen in a long time. One thing he is really good at is effin up the draft. A total loser when it comes to evaluating players. Not that Koetter is much better, when he talks like D. Smith and Bennoch are all pros.

  48. Troy Says:

Really 1976? I hate to break it to you but your answer is nonsense. I You list nothing that qualifies Dungy to have “keys to the castle”. He’s been an NFL coach and a commentator. When has he ever put together an organization? When has he ever hired a GM? When has he had personnel decision authority? The answer is never. Just handing the organization to someone unqualified because of his name is ridiculous. PS – name me a former coach who has been successful when given the type of responsibility you want to hand to Dungy?

Also, saying I’m not a serious NFL fan because I don’t agree with you is pathetic and shows that you really don’t have a legitimate argument to make.

  49. jmarkbuc Says:

    Troy……..

‘When has he ever put together an organization?”

1996, he put together one of the best coaching staffs EVER.

“When has he had personnel decision authority? ”

1996-2001, He and Rich Mckay..Tony had input on personnel, and the above mentioned coaching staff did as well…In those years, our second string could have started for most teams, especially defensively.

“PS – name me a former coach who has been successful when given the type of responsibility you want to hand to Dungy?”

Tom Coughlin, helped the Jags do a 180, although I can’t explain what happened to them this year except that they got a big head and thought they were gonna win just by showing up…

I’ve said this numerous times..even if you just made Dungy the head of the cafeteria at One Buc, we would have 1000% more credibility than we do now

  50. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

    lol

  51. Troy Says:

First, putting together a coaching staff isn’t the same as putting together an entire football organization. Second, every coach has some input on player decisions on their team and trying to clain they don’t would be dishonest. Third, How’s Jacksonville doing this year? One year of success doesn’t make Coughlin a genius.

  52. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Defense Rules Says
“And regardless of who the next HC is, he won’t have a chance unless this roster is significantly overhauled.” The

That is just insane. We have a top three total offense, and you want to overhaul it?

This team is never going to succeed if they keep blowing things up every few years. I don’t know why anyone thinks that works when it has not helped the last several times.

Roster-wise on offense, all we need is a RB. We have a to WR &TE group, we have Wester & Cappa to fix the right side of the OL.

Get us a good kicker and flip the defensive staff, and continue to address these he defense in the draft. Develop the young players.

We only just started working on fixing the defense this year…you really cannot have thought it would be a finished product this year.

  53. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Cobraboy Says
“I chuckle when I hear folks claim what the Bucs need is a President of Football Operations.

Exactly how is that different than a GM? Is it a figurehead position? “I

A president can be someone with authority who is brought in to assist the GM in making the right decisions, and it can be a less demanding role than GM.

For example, Tony Dungy was very good at finding the right mixture of defensive staff, but his availability is limited. By signing him on in a temporary role, say for one off season, and then keep him part time for the rest of the year, he can help get the defensive staff fixed.

Sounds like an advisor, right? Except Tony would need the power of making those decisions without blowback from the coach or GM.

Now, if Tony were willing to coach? Different ball game. But he won’t make a long term full time commitment like that.

It would only worm if they kept the offensive staff and made Monken the head coach or keep Koetter.

Otherwise, there are better ways of fixing the team.

Oh wow Bonzai. All we need is a RB? Ya, like right now we have ONE (Barber), unless you consider RoJo NFL-ready of course. And Wester & Cappa to fix the right side? Why then haven’t EITHER of them been able to crack the starting lineup to this point? And do you REALLY considered FA Donovan Smith our best LT option going forward? And have you forgotten that Hump is also a FA this year? And that DJax is undoubtedly a goner? Ya, we’re surely strong at WR. Not as strong as you appear to believe.

And yes, on defense we have quite a few ‘youngsters’ but how many are true NFL starters? Is VHIII a starter? Ryan Smith? Javien Elliott? Isaiah Johnson? Stewart? Cichy? Bond? How about Beckwith? Will he even return? Want to bet the farm on that at this point? Kwon’s a FA … what makes you even think the ‘next guys’ will even want him at what he’ll probably be asking? And do we really have the DLine depth that it’ll take to turn this ship around? (same for OLine depth BTW).

No question though, I’m the insane one. Also apparently the one who believes that winning teams have quality leadership AND quality players. Losing teams? Not so much. Draw your own conclusions from that Bonzai.

The biggest irony: the Bucs taking today for a higher draft pick and retaining Licht.
