Teams Eyeing Todd Monken

Who knows if Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken will be working for Team Glazer next week? But the way Albert Breer understands it, if Monken is swept out of One Buc Palace in a housecleaning, he won’t be unemployed for long.
Breer, the frontman for theMMQB.com, is very well-connected with NFL movers and shakers and he hears whispers that Monken will have several suitors trying to bring him on board if he is no longer employed by Team Glazer.
Regarding assistants, there could be some interesting offensive coordinator movement, and a name at the top of that list is right off Koetter’s staff. Per sources, Bucs OC Todd Monken’s contract is up. And I believe he’ll be a hot candidate for coordinator openings, and even could get an interview or two at the head-coaching level. His creativity and blending of college and pro concepts have more than a couple teams intrigued.
Monken is good people and obviously a damn good coach. Joe sure hopes he sticks around but think about it: How wild would it be if Monken, coming from a team with back-to-back double-digit losses, would be hired as a head coach?
Joe thinks that might be a hard sell to fans of a prospective team, no matter how qualified Monken is.
The only coach off the top of Joe’s head who had more losing seasons as an offensive coordinator than winning seasons and still got a head coaching job is Mike McCarthy. The former Packers coach logged six seasons as an NFL offensive coordinator (five years at New Orleans, one year at San Francisco) and had but two winning seasons and his quarterbacks were very much meh, such as Aaron Brooks, Jeff Blake and Alex Smith.

Dirk Koetter had 6 losing seasons as an OC
When the Bucs hired him as their HC
He had 3 losing seasons in Jacksonville
2 losing seasons in Atlanta
1 losing season in Tampa
He had an 8-8 season in Jacksonville
One winning season in Jacksonville
One winning season in Atlanta

lol. This has become a full out circus. It’s not that hard to call plays when you have Evans, Jameis, Godwin, OJ, and hopefully a better slot receiver next year.just don’t let Licht mess this team up anymore! Firrrreeee Licht! The whole coaching staff is expendable.
As a unit, they have totally underperformed during the course of their term. Letting up when they had a lead, no sense of urgency when trying to come from behind.
They have a total lack of situational awareness and refusal to use key contributors in the most important moments.
Unimaginative, uninspired, unaccountable coaching leads to redundancy of losing seasons.
Hopefully the Glazers swing for the fences and get it right this time.

I believe he has the mentality to be a quality Head Coach, but as you say, it is just too risky right now, and is certainly not going to inspire the base as winds of change.

There is no more reason to think Montgen will have any more success than
Koetter is having with Licht picking the groceries.
One thing about Montgen ,he ran an offense relying heavily on the pass,with little emphasis on the run in the first two games. That coupled with the inconsistencies of both QB’s gave the opposing offense too much time and opportunities to get back in the game as the season wore on.

^^ I agree with your thoughts on the run game, Bob. I think this is a bit of a flaw in Dirk/Todd’s offense.
I am fine with us being a pass first team, and maybe our run blocking left some to be desired. STILL, that being said, there are times that you simply HAVE to try and establish a running game.
Sometimes that may mean running the ball 10 out of 14 plays, and 5 or 6 times in a row at times.
I always admired that about Belichick. Here you have Tom Brady, probably the greatest ever at QB, but you would sometimes see games where they are running, running, running over and over again. And if at first it was failing, they just kept at it.
We never really did that. It always seemed like the run was just an afterthought, stuck in the middle of 7 passing plays.

They should have fired Koetter WEEKS ago and gave Monken a shot to see what they got in him… Wouldnt that have made sense… like 4 weeks ago?

^^ Kenny, you make a really good point. I know the Glazers don’t like to fire in midseason, but it might have been good to see what Monken really could bring to the table as a Head Coach.
He seems like someone to me that has the right kind of intangibles as a leader of men, but we just don’t know.

He’s definitely not gonna be hired as an HC, he only just got play calling duties this year and he had it taken away from him multiple times due to Dirk being a control freak. He should be a top OC candidate though.

To be fair, a coach can only work with the talent he is given.
It’s easy to blame Koetter for no run game, but he did the best he could with the line and RBs he had been given. People claim he should have benched Caleb and put in Cappa, but they forget Cappa was being developed off the field. Cappa will now be the starting right guard, but he probably wasn’t ready before now.
And Dotson needed replacing, but he was a high paid player and Wester needed development time as well. Now HE is ready.one
The point is, Monken can add a running game.

We had our chance to find out if Monken was HCing material- should have fired Koetter week 8 and gave Monken 8 games. Poor choice by the Glazers to keep him- they don’t fire coaches Mid year- unless you are coaching Man U.

Dump the entire coaching staff at this point. They are all hot garbage. There are so many unachieving coaches in the league with teams that actually play hard. There’s a whole lot of quit of this current team.
