Koetter On Delay Of Game

December 23rd, 2018

Telling time.

Midway through the fourth quarter the Bucs had a shot at pulling within one score with the Cowboys leading 27-13.

The Bucs got deep into Cowboys territory and had a third-and-one situation from the Cowboys-2. Shamefully, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, dawdled and got popped for a delay of game penalty to push the Bucs back five yards.

It was the second time in the drive Jameis was flagged for delay of game but on the first flag Jameis was bailed out when Dallas committed a defensive delay of game. Unreal.

Call it Jameis’ Josh-Freeman-vs.-the Jets moment. He later muttered something about the play clock was too fast and caught him off guard.

Koetter stopped just short of suggesting the delay of game call that did count and pushed the Bucs back to the Cowboys-7 wasn’t all that awful.

“I didn’t think about a timeout and I saw the clock,” Koetter said of the penalty. “We were going to throw it anyway. I didn’t know about using the timeout.

“And sometimes, being back [further from goal line] gives you more [passing] route options. And I also thought we were going to get the ball snapped. We didn’t do a good job there.”

The fact that Jameis had two delay of game penalties on the same drive springs to mind when Freeman had a mental breakdown in New York to open the 2013 season against the Jets. The backstory to that was pretty wild (anyone remember when Freeman Twittered a topless selfie from his hotel room at 1 a.m. the morning of the game?).

Joe sure hopes there is no backstory to Jameis suddenly forgetting how to read a digital clock in the end zone. But if there was, it may explain things.

You are down 2 TDS and need to keep timeouts for the defense to hold. That’s all on Winston.

  2. AlteredEgo Says:

The numbers on the digital clock looked like they were spelling Uber….no wonder Jameis was flummoxed….

  3. Wesley Says:

Didn’t think about a time out?

  4. Bucamania Says:

    Klueless.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We can’t use a timeout there……but I’m surprised Koetter didn’t burn one because he has wasted timeouts all year.

And there is no way 3rd and 7 is better than 3rd & 2……no matter where you are on the field…….total BS from Koetter.

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

Wes … he meant he didn’t consider burning a time out

  7. Zwak Says:

Josh was a mess in south Tampa on many occasions..

  8. Waco Says:

    Such an embarrassment.

  9. AfrikaThaRapper Says:

And there you have it. Go Bucs…….sh*t !!!!

  10. Frank Pillow Says:

Dirk must’ve not had a good play for that down and distance, again. How about a coach at least screaming to snap it through the helmet radio before it gets cut off?

  11. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Klueless micromanaging the playcalling

Monken calls the plays, klueless disagrees , changes the call and JW waiting… And no one looking at the clock”

  12. DB55 Says:

Never seen an offense in more 3rd and plus 18 than Koetters bucan

  13. Larry Says:

I’ll say it again. “JAMEIS WINSTON IS AN AVERAGE NFL QUARTERBACK”. Don’t believe me. Just ask Bill Polian. I have yet to see Winston take this team on his back and will them to win. I don’t believe he has the skills to do that. How many delay of game penalties can you have??? He was great in College. The NFL, not so much. Just hope they get a solid HC and GM. so that the Bucs can have a super draft. Lord knows they need one. I really like the defensive backs coach with the Cowboys. He has worked for Rod Marinelli, who was here during the Super bowl run of the Bucs.

  14. Mikiebucsfan76 Says:

I am with you tampabaybucfan hell you wasted timeouts all year and want use one with the game on the line and probably your job. come on man. but you know this entire team just look beat down , I guess because of all the losing and most likely a lot of people getting fired next week

  15. T REX Says:

    It’s on both idiots

  16. BrianBucs Says:

Winston keeps making rookie mistakes and Koetter keeps taking the fall and making excuses for him. Not exactly NFL quality now is it?

  17. JimmyJack Says:

He said they were going to pass. I agree that the five yards isn’t a killer there but to me the biggest problem lies beneath the pentalty.

One play prior we got stuffed on 2nd &1. We are in four down territory and cannot run for one yard when given 3 chances.

This makes it harder to score. This makes it harder to keep drives alive. This is a major problem for our offense. This has been a problem for the entirety of Dirk’s stay.

It has cost us just as many games as kicking. It should have been fixed 3 years ago. It will never get fixed with Dirk and IMO is part of the reason why Dirk needs to get fired.

  18. JimmyJack Says:

If your QB gets you a 2nd and 1 at the 2 yard line his job should be done. Good football teams convert those into TDs 96%+ of the time.

Not letting Winston off the hook. He is still expected to get us a TD there in a do or die situation.

  19. BucLover727 Says:

    Koetter contrqsucted himself, big time.

This team looks like the statement sounds.

  20. BucLover727 Says:

    Contradicted ^

  21. BigMacAttack Says:

7 points was more important than a timeout there. Koetter is completely lost and every time he opens his mouth he sticks his foot in there. He is embarrassing to this clown shoe organization. Please just fire him now and spare us all.

  22. BigMacAttack Says:

Winston changing play to QB sneak to get 1yard and 1’st down because Koetter wouldn’t call a sneak. Again a Koetter problem blames on Winston.

  23. WillieG Says:

And morons keep calling Winston “America’s Quarterback”. SMDH

  24. Jean Lafitte Says:

He’s covering for Jameis and you guys are blaming Koetter.

  25. SOEbuc Says:

I thought they were actually trying to get more passing space on purpose when I first saw it been then realized they just had no clue what the clock was.

“We were going to throw it anyway.”

Yeah right Dirk. You on their two-yard line on third down. Run up the gut and a TFL.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

To be fair…all game they were starting plays at the last second, so I see Koetter’s point there. When you are cutting it that close, it is hard for the coach to call a time out in time.

I noticed the last second start of plays earlier in the game, and just figured they did it to try to get the Cowboys to jump, giving them five yards.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And I hardly think missing the play clock a couple times makes Jameis a bad quarterback.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but weren’t the two delay of game penalties back to back?

If so, I think Jameis was saying the never stopped the play clock for that first penalty, resulting in a shorter time for the next play.

Aren’t they suppose to stop it to make the penalty call, and then restart the play clock for a new play?

I’m not saying that’s what happened…just trying to make sense of it.

  29. lambchop Says:

Winston thought he had time cuz he kept looking at the digit on his jersey. Coulda fooled anyone.

  30. lambchop Says:

    @Buccaneer Bonzai,

Are you really that stupid? If the play didn’t come in on time from the coaches then that’s a coaching problem. They aren’t rookie coaches that never played an NFL or Cowboys defense before. If it’s Jameis just struggling to diagnose the defense and unsure whether to run the play or audible, then that is just the nail in the coffin for me regarding his aptitude to run a sophisticated offense. Can he call an audible after reading a defense? These are basic traits of a successful QB, traits I would expect from the #1 pick.

This is a do or die contract year for Winston and a do or die audition for either hoodwinking the Glazers to keep Koetter or for his next job. Failure at this point in the season with play clock management shows a total INEPT bunch of imbeciles.

  31. Jason S. Mclaurin Says:

Can’t say it enough but that penalty killed them. They need a power runner they can rely on and have that change of pace running back they need to complement a speedster. They should search for that in the offseason. Through the post draft process or maybe find a power running back in the draft to complement whatever speedster they sign off the street. They can’t score in the red zone because they rely on big plays. Too many receivers and not enough running backs. Too many out of position lineman too. When I seen Cappa I still felt he should be groomed as the LT of this team and move Smith to either RG or RT. Beneoch shouldn’t be playing Guard either he should be playing Tackle hell he would be better off at LT than D. Smith at this point. I say Smith should be brought back but we have to work with him get him to make a move and take on a challenge for the better instead of him practice to be the highest paid lineman in league history which is exactly what he’s doing. Dotson should just retire a Buc after this season honestly.

  32. Joe Blahak Says:

    WinSTUNNED!!!!

  33. Christopher Says:

America’s Idiot At QB. Let’s stop blaming Koetter for Winston’s lack of awareness. You wanna burn three timeouts bc he’s a fool especially in the second half? Come on.

I’m sick of all the blame laying on koetter and none on the players. It’s probably why no one wants to come here.

  34. Bucsfanman Says:

4th year “pro”! Please stop the excuses!

  35. BucHead5588 Says:

Cant Stand all the Winston Haters he made some mistakes but the Blocking yesterday wasn’t great but Dallas has a good Defense it just honestly seems like they stop running an why not give Rojo a chance to Run the Ball they want to pass it to him he’s a Running back Mark my Words Winston will thrive with New Coaching an it’s Time to let some of these Vets Go an let the New Younger Players Run the Team they Don’t Like Losing Winston fumbled an dam near Ran down J Smith I love that effort no quit in my QB Kwon comes back Evans got Fight Hump got Fight I dong understand why Brate is not on the Field more Time for Grimes Dotson McCoy if he dosnt take a Pay Cut Curry Unrein DJack Golhston

It looked too much like our jersey number fonts…. and he didn’t realize it was the clock. 😉

  39. Cobraboy Says:

Since the Bucs jerseys look like digital clocks, maybe Winston looked over at Humphries and thought he has 10 seconds left…

  40. rrsrq Says:

That’s a coach that has mailed it in. You don’t let your team get a penalty that you can stop. Dirk has used timeouts before that we are still scratching our head asking why. There was plenty of time, you score on that play you still have two timeouts and the two minute warning. Even Lovie knows, “it’s simple as that”

  41. DalvinCookRules Says:

The redzone play-calling has been the SINGLE biggest weakness of this team, at least since Mike Smith was fired.

There have been some execution breakdowns by the players, including Winston on the final drive, but the MUCH BIGGER PROBLEM is that we have NO CLUE how to call a redzone scoring play.

I don’t know if this is because teams don’t respect our running game, and that may be why we have had some success running in TDs despite lack of any skilled players at that position. Teams seem to be dropping 7 guys in coverage everytime we get inside the 15.
