“He Warrants Coming Back”
December 20th, 2018There is one man that has his back, and in some regards, seems to use reason and logic.
With his world seemingly crumbling before him, almost losing his job, his coach likely losing his, the general manager who selected him apparently in hot water, and a speedy target of a receiver begging to get out of town, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston understandably may seem lonely these days.
But there’s a man that has his back. And that would be prickly Pete Prisco of CBS Sports. In a recent video of CBS HQ breaking down the Cowboys-Bucs game this Sunday, Prisco defended Jameis while speaking with former NFL quarterback Brady Quinn.
While apparently limited on time, Prisco didn’t say a whole lot about the Bucs and Jameis but did say the team needs Jameis in 2019.
“I do think he warrants coming back though,” Prisco said. “I think whoever takes over, whatever coach takes over, whatever regime takes over, I think they have to bring him back.”
Well, who will be quarterback if the Bucs don’t bring him back? Joe Flacco? Brock Osweiler? Blake Bortles? Careful what you wish for.
Joe is of the mind the words of wisdom from Raheem Morris apply here for those who cannot sleep at night until Jameis is run out of town.
“I will tolerate you until I can replace you.”
You can hear Prisco’s comments in the video below.

Jamies “yah never know what you’re gonna get” Winston smiles a lot for being on a losing team. He must get that from big fat softie Gerald big fat softie McCoy
December 20th, 2018 at 5:28 am
The scheme needs to change and a power running back must be obtained this offseason not a damn QB. TBH I feel we should keep everyone in place. Keep Koetter and Licht but add something above Licht like a President or VP to help manage his off-season moves and spending. I just really felt Mike Smith was in the wrong role with this team the guy should’ve been associate head coach I say instead of defensive coordinator. If it falls through next season then get rid of everyone Jameis included and start over then. If we must pursue a coach though this offseason I say let’s look at Jay Gruden or Jimbo Fisher in the college ranks. Im heavily against a defensive minded coach leading this team next season unless its Mark Duffner who I feel should get a real look at this soon to be vacancy
December 20th, 2018 at 5:30 am
Unfortunately Jameis will be back. And Unfortunately everyone eventually is going to regret it. The Glazer kids won’t make a good choice, they haven’t so far. Hopefully some coach prospects reject TB because of Jameis but there is always someone who thinks they can fix a clunker and make it go.
December 20th, 2018 at 6:02 am
2013-2014 Atlanta Falcons went 4-12 and 6-10 with Mike Smith and Dirk Koetter. They had prolific passing game, not much running game.
Why the Bucs thought things would be any different with these guys is beyond me.
December 20th, 2018 at 6:15 am
He ‘ll be back.
We can only have a chance at John Harbaugh or Ron Rivera ?
December 20th, 2018 at 6:31 am
Why delay the inevitable? They’ll be looking for a QB after he leads them to another basement finish. Bucs will still have the 4th best QB in the division next year regardless. It’s a rebuild which means putting playoff aspirations off for another year. Trades for draft picks is the way to go. McSoftie, WinSTUNNED and Djax.
December 20th, 2018 at 6:41 am
I could see bringing him back for one year….that would give us time to develop a young QB…..he could turn around enough to warrant an extended team-friendly extension.
Letting him go saves some money but doesn’t solve our QB problem.
December 20th, 2018 at 6:48 am
@Jason
Respectfully, here’s why you’re wrong by half.
Half our stadium is empty of fans. You bring back the same coaching staff for another year, you may be wrong by two-thirds. The fan base needs to trade on hope at this point. An intentional “new scheme” with the same staff (or partially kept) will do NOTHING to sell tickets, beer and hotdogs.
No, we need a shiny new object.
For business reasons. The Glazers aren’t stupid.
December 20th, 2018 at 6:50 am
“Flacco? Brock Osweiler? Blake Bortles?”
why no one mentions foles? doesn’t sit well with the message?
December 20th, 2018 at 6:53 am
Why do we insist on minimizing Joe Flacco? And frankly, as of this moment Jameis and Blake Bortles are practically the same, save one detail. Blake’s actually been to the playoffs.
No Flacco is not exciting. But stop lumping him in with garbage QBs like Osweiler and Bortles. The guy’s an accomplished veteran QB with hardware to prove it.
I’d be willing to bet he’d do better with the talent on this offense than our starters have so far.
Bringing back Jameis is a BUSINESS decision pure and simple. It has nothing to do with production at this point.
December 20th, 2018 at 6:53 am
@Raheem … “I will tolerate you until I can replace you.” Aah yes Joe, the perfect quote to demonstrate that Jameis will be back next year. Bucs CAN’T replace him next year; we’ve got too many high-priority holes that if not fixed FIRST would cripple any new QB (or coach) coming in here.
o LT … Donovan Smith is (1) NOT under contract after this season; and (2) is NOT the LT we so desperately need going forward. He proved that to me this year with his mediocre play in a contract year. BUT … given his size & experience (and yes, talent), I think he’s worth re-signing, at the right price, IF he can play Left GUARD effectively. Personally prefer to draft a LT with our #1 draft choice this year (apparently a couple of decent ones available I hear).
o RG … Ali Marpet also had a mediocre year IMO (versus what I expected to be a Pro Bowl year), and needs to be moved back over to Right GUARD, his more natural position it appears. With Donovan at LG & Jensen at C & Ali at RG, we SHOULD have a fairly decent middle of the OLine for several years.
o RT … Neither Benenoch nor Cappa has shown me anything this year, and Dotson is just too old & injury-prone. Pick up a solid RT in FA (not nearly as expensive as LTs it seems), but keep Dotson & Evan Smith as OLine backups (both have decent versatility to play several positions & both are under contract until 2020).
o RB … I’d release RoJo right now (another BAD Jason Licht experiment). Barber & Rodgers are BOTH free agents, so we have ZERO RBs in the stable. I’d sign the best TWO RBs available in FA, then draft another (probably 4th or 5th Rnd) to develop. Good RBs aren’t nearly as expensive as the other skill positions it seems.
o WRs … Release DJax (I personally like his skillset, but he whines too much, is too old now, and makes too much $$$ for the productivity he’s shown). Re-sign Humphries (Rudy’s proven, in a contract year, that he’s one of the best #3 WRs in the NFL IMO). Hopefully Godwin bounces back from what’s been a mediocre year at best.
o DT … Vea’s playing better, just wish I could say the same for Allen (not impressed to this point of the 917 defensive snaps we’ve had through 14 games, he’s played 350 … 38%; that’s a part-time player at best). GMC is a horse (623 defensive snaps … 68% … despite missing 2 full games & playing hurt in others) BUT at his age he’s not worth $13 mil (renegotiate his contract to $7-$8 mil or replace him). Also release Unrein (yet another BAD experiment Jason). If we keep GMC we need to add 1 DT through the draft; if we release him would also pick up a younger DT in FA (for in the $7-$8 mil range) in addition to drafting a DT.
o DE … Obviously keep JPP & Nassib (BOTH have been horses in the trenches), but beyond that the Bucs are a mess at DE. Gholston has played 40% of the def snaps but has produced next to nothing (I’d renegotiate his salary down to $3 mil or so or release him). Curry has been another disappointment IMO (missed 4 of 14 games and is way down on def snaps … another part-time player like Allen) so I’d renegotiate his contract or release him too. Keeping Noah Spence on our 53-man roster is a bad joke IMO (he’s played 34 def snaps ALL YEAR). Depending on how contract renegotiations go, we may need to add as many as 3-4 DEs in FA and the draft. Thank you Jason Licht.
o LB … LVD makes a lot, but he’s worth it IMO (I’ve gained a renewed respect for LVD calling plays & blitzing especially). Kwon, Bond, Taylor & Lynch are ALL FAs at the end of this season, and Bechwith is STILL on IR (he may never fully recover from that broken ankle). Bullough, Cichy & Bond have shown me nothing. In short … our LB corps is a mess, just like our DEs & Secondary. I’d re-sign Kwon, but only if the price is right, and NOT as a MLB (although he’s a good backup). Hopefully Bechwith recovers fully, but we’d still need to add at least 2 LBs (more likely 3) even if we re-sign Kwon.
o CB … Wow, what a disaster. Grimes is surely retiring, so there’s one NEED. Davis has played OK, but not even close to what I was hoping for, and MJ Stewart has been a disappointment (possibility at safety though). Shaw, Harris, Elliott & Rivers are ALL FAs … Bye. Still not sure what to expect out of VHIII, but it would probably be as a nickel CB not outside (good backup there though). Ryan Smith I’d keep also (coming along, but more as a backup for now at least). That leaves us with a need for TWO starting outside CBs, and BOTH should come from FA (we’ve already got the young talent to back them up).
o Safety … Wow, another disaster. Justin Evans (on IR) has regressed this year IMO, but has LOTS of talent. Whitehead shows some flash (periodically) as does Adams (both keepers), but Isaiah Johnson hasn’t shown me much at all. Conte is 30 and a FA after this year … Pass. So we need an ‘elder-statesman’ FA to add some experience to our Safety group. (Sure wish Tandy was still here Jason … thank you again).
o Special Teams … Anger I like, but Santos hasn’t shown that he can hit the long ones, so we need to keep an eye out for yet-another kicker (go figure).
So, a question: Should we keep Jason Licht for another year or two to fix the mess that he created? Ya right.
December 20th, 2018 at 6:55 am
He only warrants coming back so OBP can be ABSOLUTELY certain before making the BIG decision….in 2019 will they sign Jameis to a long term contract or part ways with Jamyth
December 20th, 2018 at 6:58 am
The Glazers seem to make one mistake after another, so they probably will bring him back, especially if the make another mistake and keep Jason Licht.
Why postpone the inevitable though? Cut him loose and rebuild your QB position. Every year that they keep Winston is just another year that that they set themselves back.
December 20th, 2018 at 7:16 am
We minimize Flacco because if Winston came in the league with the defense and running game the ravens had when Flacco broke into the league Winston would already be extended
December 20th, 2018 at 7:16 am
I want Jameis back. If we get some offensive line help and a running game (Kareem Hunt) this offense could be really good. Defense needs a lot of help.
December 20th, 2018 at 7:21 am
Alanbucsfan – – don’t cherry pick stats to prove your point, that doesn’t do anyone any good. I couldn’t stand Mike Smith as our DC but don’t sit there acting like he wasn’t proven. Guy is one of the falcons most successful coaches. 7 years 5 playoff appearances. I couldn’t tell you what I’d give for that. As for koetter he was considered very good at Jacksonville and with the Falcons so stop trying to get cute.
December 20th, 2018 at 7:25 am
If you’re shopping for a new HC, make it clear that he decides who’ll be his QB.
December 20th, 2018 at 7:32 am
Bringing Winston back for a 5th year is a definition of insanity. Just thinking he’s going to be different than he was before. Move on. Get Bell as RB and veteran QB to manage the game and draft a QB to groom. I bet they would have a better record than Winston in his 5th year.
December 20th, 2018 at 7:33 am
Yes Jamies would be great if we got a wall for a Offense line to give him a minute or two
A run game
A coach to teach him to read the field
Jamies would be a top 5 QB
December 20th, 2018 at 7:33 am
@Bucsfanman, it is what it is. — Frankly, if Jameis were replaced with Joe Flacco, it would be alot harder for me to turn on the Bucs game on Sundays. I want Jameis here, and I want him to get this all turned around here in TB. If he cant do it, than yes he will need to move on. But it is what I want to watch and see happen.
December 20th, 2018 at 7:45 am
Given the lack of a better alternative in either free agency and the upcoming draft class, as well as Winston’s play since he has been benched I would bet dollars to donuts he comes back for at least 2019, what happens after that is anyone’s guess.
December 20th, 2018 at 7:47 am
Test
December 20th, 2018 at 7:47 am
As I stated before, being forced to have Winston as their starting QB will probably make head coaching candidates skip Tampa and look elsewhere
December 20th, 2018 at 7:49 am
So it’s not that he warrants coming back with his play it’s just there aren’t any better options available.
Not exactly a ringing endorsement of a #1 overall pick who was hailed as a pro ready franchise qb prior to the draft
December 20th, 2018 at 7:52 am
It will be a wasted year next year!!!!!!!!!!!!! The good news is that the Bucs will have a very high draft pick in 2020!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 20th, 2018 at 7:53 am
Defense Rules…again great analysis on your info…only problem is who they bring in as HC….and I hope that they bring in a new GM and then the GM & HC are on the same page because this disaster is obviously not compatible. Again great points on what you have listed, if the new HC comes in with a hybrid defense or 3-4 things can change, def need to keep JPP & Nassib, stuck with Vea, who seems to be getting better and LVD was a great player under schiano and seemed that again. Also depending on the HC & GM on keeping jameis or possibly going with a foles, flacco, or manning
December 20th, 2018 at 7:53 am
Guys knock it off with the Joe Flacco talk…Imo he’s overrated…
He’s made a few plays in his career but let’s be honest…Ray Lewis and the Raven defense won that SuperBowl he gets credit for…
Since he came into the league Baltimore has basically had a top 10 defense every year…Not to mention a pretty solid running attack; he won’t have that here in Tampa… He’ll have to do something he’s never done in his career if he came to Tampa and that’s finding a way to manufature wins and carrying a franchise (with an unproven coaching staff, and a suspect front office).
For those who say he’s never had weapons, that’s Bull…He’s had some pretty good receivers over the years as well; Boldin, Steve Smith, and Mike Wallace come to mind….
His inability to scramble and his captain checkdown mentality doesn’t work in this division…He’s Mike Glennon all over again…
December 20th, 2018 at 7:56 am
If Flacco is traded he’ll go to Oakland along with DJax…..Gruden was drolling over Flacco that draft but the Bucs had no picks
December 20th, 2018 at 7:56 am
Demon- Yea, I’m not endorsing the Bucs picking up Flacco by any means. The comparisons, however, are a little over the top. And, as Loyal states, it’s not a ringing endorsement that keeping him is better than the alternative.
The best thing for everyone involved would be for Jameis to remain a Buc for the next decade. He needs to improve to do so though.
As far as next year, it is just good business sense to keep him on the roster. You KNOW what you have, and it’s a position you don’t need to use a premium draft pick on, at least yet.
They need to address the o-line, defense, kicker, and running back, DESPERATELY.

See posts like this leaves you with zero credibility. Please for your own saftey take your fingers away from the keyboard/phone so you don’t post anything dumber going forward. Did you happen to miss that the Jags have one of the best defenses in football while we have the worst. The Jags have Fournette while we have Barber? Yeah what the QB is asked to do for these two teams is identical. Dude get a clue and just quite wasting everyone’s time with your wortless drival.
December 20th, 2018 at 7:59 am
If they let Winston go after this season it’ll just allow us “Jameis apologists” to show the haters how ignorant you are as a poor excuse for a football fan. So many people have this warm fuzzy feeling for how good the defense is playing. They aren’t that much better they were just so horrible before under Mike Smith. They still allowed the ravens to run the ball down their throats for an entire half to seal the game and people keep talking about how good lvd played. We put all our money into the d line and that’s what happened. Winston has zero running game well maybe 20% of a running game, bad o line, bad defense and people keep talking about win loss record with this kind of defense I just don’t get it
When Martin was in a contract and had an all star season where was this talk? A play action quarterback who has no run game lol yea that’s supposed to go over well. They call Lovie coach my scheme guy but won’t say it about Koetter hmm that’s so odd. Yes he has limitations like every other qb but Koetter is just as limited and so is the offense. Dude misfires like no tomorrow but stop blaming win/loss record on quarterbacks this coach and this team and the offense is severely lacking in key areas.

December 20th, 2018 at 8:11 am
Ndog- I mentioned nothing of the two teams’ defenses. Blake and Jameis share a particular stat that you simply cannot argue against despite your forlorn infatuation with an average QB: TURNOVERS. You have ZERO to add to the conversation which is why you resort to stupid name-calling and petty BS. You don’t read anyone’s entire post. You just jump on any comment that criticizes Jameis. That’s your ENTIRE M.O. That’s all you got. It’s the only time you post.
It’s akin to arguing with a 2 year old!
December 20th, 2018 at 8:15 am
Nick Foles is an easy upgrade
December 20th, 2018 at 8:16 am
The only reason that I would want Joe Flacco here is if he was holding down the fort while the Bucs were grooming a young future franchise QB.
And as far as the useless Blake Bottles drival, keep in mind that Bottles is the only QB that has thrown more interceptions than Winston since he came into the league. (Think about that for a second)
The smart move for the Bucs would be to pursue Nick Foles. Lots of years left in his tank and he would be a HUGE improvement and upgrade over Winston.
However, my prediction is that the Buc’s keep Winston and pursue a head coach that already has a relationship with him such as Bruce Arians or Jim Harbaugh. Personally I would rather see the Bucs hire a defense minded coach, but they will probably throw good money after bad.
Winston is not the answer here if the Bucs want to field a winning team.
December 20th, 2018 at 8:17 am
And once again you prove my point! LOL! You can’t help yourself! You didn’t read my post.
Good luck arguing with yourself Ndog! SMH!
December 20th, 2018 at 8:18 am
JAMeis really has no warranting of a comeback. His actions and lying to an organization of those actions and to the Tampa Bay fans of his in general loses trust. He doesn’t deserve anything
December 20th, 2018 at 8:19 am
Doolnuts-
My point is Smith’s success was in the past, he and Koetter were trending unsuccessful. Happens to alot of older coaches sometimes.
And now we saw the same results- problem with this team is not qb.
December 20th, 2018 at 8:27 am
Nick Foles wins. His running backs are average at best. His receivers are OK but he finds a way to make plays to win games. Would it be too much to ask the Bucs next coach and GM to make a play for him. If the Eagles get into the playoffs and he plays well his price goes up. Eagles don’t want to have to let him go but they have so much money tied up in Wentz that Foles is missing out on his last big payday. Would he want to play for the Bucs is the question? He’s an upgrade over Winston, a clutch player who doesn’t fall apart without a running game.
December 20th, 2018 at 8:32 am
Ed great points on Foles, the eagles team that played in Tampa this year was horrible offensively

“Joe Flacco? Brock Osweiler? Blake Bortles? Careful what you wish for.”
No one is wishing for those guys. We already have a crappy QB like those in Jameis. Four seasons in the same system and he’s the same guy.
2014 Florida State Jameis is the REAL Jameis. The Jameis we’ve watched the last four seasons is the REAL Jameis. 2013 was a mirage propped up by an offense and defense loaded with NFL talent.
Its time to move on, Joe. He’s reached his ceiling.
Oh – and I’m a huge Florida State fan.

Jameis will be back enough already. You don’t give up on a 25 yr old first round Q.B. who’s only offensive coach has been Dork Koetter. Do you draft someone, and bring in someone to compete, sure. The last thing you want to do is have him leave, and be successful somewhere else. He’s coming back, it’s a no brainer.
December 20th, 2018 at 10:05 am
Eagles already have a young quarterback they’ve invested in.
December 20th, 2018 at 10:06 am

“Eagles already have a young quarterback they’ve invested in.”
So the greatest NFL ready QB to ever play college ball couldn’t beat out Wentz and make him trade bait to another QB needy team? I’m not sure Magoo could beat out Foles in an honest, head-to-head, competition right her in Bucsville. He’s been gifted the position since he first stepped foot in One Buc Place. He’s never had to earn anything.
December 20th, 2018 at 10:49 am
We get it…. you were all at the stadium in the beginning of the year looking stupid with your Fitz beards and spent weeks talking about how we can cut Winston and the rest of us laughed at you all now your even more angry but we get it.
But why do you think Fitz failed after all that talk about how he got better with age? Did he honestly suddenly forget how to throw or is it that idiot dirk thought he would roll out the same game plan for 16 weeks and it would work? There’s a reason dirk and mike Smith got fired in Atlanta even with that good defense and Matt Ryan at quarterback and Julio Jones. Why does anyone except better results from dirk with a perennial losing franchise?
December 20th, 2018 at 11:50 am
Nailed it, AlanBucsFan.
December 20th, 2018 at 11:52 am
Winston’s saving grace could be his contract status. The Bucs can bring him back for a very team friendly deal. We don’t have to make any commitment at all and make him earn it.
Just wonder what the next coach will think. Whoever it is will want to win immediately. You look at the way out team is constructed and good QB play is the biggest key to winning. If the Glazers want to retain Winston I think a lot of canidates for our HC job would want to have somebody to compete with Winston for the job.
December 20th, 2018 at 11:57 am
The Glazers removed their “franchise” QB from the side of their gladiator arena, it’s not about on the field at this point Joe. They should be embarrassed and it’s on them but it’s part of the reason that stadium is empty. It’s one thing to not play good on the field (and fans will stay home) but many stay home because of the off the field. Is that good for business?
December 20th, 2018 at 12:05 pm
Before we start playing the high morals card, please remember who is highlighted on the inner facade of the Den of Depression in the Ring of Honor who is no stranger to standing in front of a judge copping pleas — something Jameis has never done.
December 20th, 2018 at 12:15 pm
You mean “morals” card, not “high morals” card. Your hero has settled two cases that we know of with women who claimed he did things to them against their will.
Fire the cannons?

“Joe: Before we start playing the high morals card, please remember who is highlighted on the inner facade of the Den of Depression in the Ring of Honor who is no stranger to standing in front of a judge copping pleas — something Jameis has never done.”—
Just pointing out the truth man. Several media folks said football fans don’t care about transgressions. You can bet there are plenty of people out there that don’t go for that reason. And not too many owners remove a player from the side of the stadium, but I blame them.
December 20th, 2018 at 1:34 pm
One major problem the Bucs have this off season is the Salary cap. The Bucs have the 4th least amount of cap space going into the off season at roughly 20 million. In order to lure any Free Agent in 2019 the Bucs are going to have to make some Cap Space. If or when the Bucs cut Winston that opens up 20 million and doubles the Cap space. Bucs need a lot of help and a lot of cap space is needed to achieve that goal.
December 20th, 2018 at 1:52 pm
Bucko- There’s probably going to be a bunch of high-priced/overpaid veterans cut or renegotiated this offseason.
Potential names:
DJax
Unrein
GMC
Grimes (retired hopefully)
Fitz
Gholston (can’t believe he’s still on the roster!)
And others, which might include Jameis depending on the scenario.
December 20th, 2018 at 5:07 pm
Pump the brakes on Foles. Wentz is being thrown under the bus in philly. You fake fans should know ALL about that. At least the Eagles have a GOOD reason… and backup. Lol!! Dear lord
December 20th, 2018 at 7:40 pm
Flacco behind the Bucs line is a poor mans 2018 Eli Manning….. That’s right a poor mans version of complete garbage… Flacco would get wrecked on this team. Our O line is terrible whatever QB we play he better have a set of wheels on him.
December 20th, 2018 at 10:17 pm
Jameis warrants coming back, but only at a bargain basement contract price…..$21 million for this guy is insane
