Inside Jameis Winston’s 11-Game Road Losing Streak

December 19th, 2018

Joe dove a bit into this stunning mess earlier this morning.

And here’s more horrifying data on Jameis Winston’s scary and shameful road run — one that hopefully ends Sunday.

America’s Quarterback is riding an 11-game road losing streak as a starting quarterback spanning more than two years.

Man, that gives Joe the shivers.

So what has the mighty Bucs offense averaged in the first halves of those 11 games. Brace for it … 6.8 points.

How many first-quarter touchdowns in those 11 games? Just one. One!

In total, Jameis has 22 turnovers in those 11 starts, complemented by 17 touchdown passes and a 67.8 completion rate.

For his own confidence and to not scare the crap out of his new head coach, Joe sure hopes Jameis beats Dallas on Sunday to shake free from this ugliness.

    Opportunity means nothing if you’re not prepared for it.

    -Ronde Barber.

    Great and timely quote for the Bucs org.

  2. Troy Says:

    Don’t worry, he won’t.

  3. DB55 Says:

    I agree joe he sucks now trade him to Jacksonville or New York. I’ll take either please and thank you.

    Just don’t want to stand in the way of this storied franchise and it’s rich winning history.

  4. BucLover727 Says:

    (Bucs org is not prepared. Losing culture, uncertain coaching, front office.)

  5. Defense Rules Says:

    @Joe … “So what has the mighty Bucs offense averaged in the first halves of those 11 games. Brace for it … 6.8 points.” Ya Joe, that pretty makes us Webster’s definition of SLOW STARTERS. And in today’s NFL, that’s the kiss of death, especially for a young team with a history of losing.

    Jameis’ total of 22 turnovers in those 11 games (16 of them INTs) speaks for itself. BUT … even that’s not all on Jameis. When the other team KNOWS you have no running game & MUST PASS, it probably kinda simplifies their defensive situation (you’re one-dimensional at that point). Our receivers haven’t been the best at getting separation (I’m trying to be kind) so throwing into tight windows becomes the norm. Not to mention that our OLine hasn’t exactly done a sterling job of either run blocking or pass blocking, meaning that our QBs are VERY often under significant pressure while attempting to pass.

    I’m not big on EXCUSES, but there really are REASONS why we’ve sucked for so long. Until we have some competent LEADERSHIP in here to identify those REASONS and just as importantly FIX THEM we’ll continue to occupy the NFC South basement.

  6. JimmyJack Says:

    Holy crap Joe 0-11!!! That is disgusting. And thank you for pointing out that’s it’s not all on the defense.

    We need better QB play plain and simple. When you continue to lose everybody gets blamed and rightfully so. HCs get fired. Roster gets shredded & GMs get canned. That’s just life in the NFL. There’s no excuse for losing and if you can’t do it the orginazation needs to try to find somebody who can.

  7. csidedave Says:

    Despite all of the organizational issues, if you’re not sure he’s your guy after 4 years, then he’s not your guy.

  8. Broy34 Says:

    Yep it’s all jameis’ fault he’s been apart of the worst coaching defense kicking and running game in the league since he got to the nfl. But his win in arrowhead and that 5 game winning streak has been forgotten. Wait a second weren’t they running well playing solid d and kicking well during that time? That’s a coincidence

  9. Joe Blahak Says:

    Tired of the Winston debate items. There is no debate…HE IS ROTTEN! and will always be ROTTEN! CUT THE CORD!!!

  10. Not there yet Says:

    Wow didn’t realize Winston was losing and everyone else on the team was eating W’s. And FYI this nothing to do with defending Jameis but here I thought the defense was the worst in the nfl and especially on the road under mike smith the last two years. Guess even if defense is nonexistent and doesn’t travels well you still have to win. Coaches take as much responsibility if not more for slow starts than anyone else which is why Koetter is the one walking the plank

  11. 813bucboi Says:

    JOE

    how many of those turnovers came in the first half?…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  12. JimmyJack Says:

    Bro Winston played bad in most of those 11 losses. Nobody here said it’s all Winston’s fault except you.

    Fact is that Winston did play bad that many times. There’s no defending his play. It was what it was. In this league you don’t last long when you continue to contribute to losing.

  13. JimmyJack Says:

    It’s just like Joe has reported multiple times. QBs who can’t win enough to get into playoffs year after year eventually get replaced. Winston has one of the longest non-playoff streaks in history.

    He needs to win more and it goes away. But each game he continues to lose just makes the ice thinner and thinner.

  14. Dooshlarue Says:

    Some teams we just can’t hardly ever beat, and sadly, Dallas (@home) is one of them.
    I expect Jameis to get rattled early in this one.
    No way we win.

  15. Lamarcus Says:

    Who cares. This whole team is garbage. As been for 12 years. There is nothing we do consistently but lose

  16. PhillyBuc Says:

    Continuing to hang on to and pay perennial, non-productive losers like Gmac and JW while not building decent depth across positions = 5 wins per season. Clean the slate and use the last 2 games to determine who still wants to play in the NFL. I’d bet the house JW doesn’t become Steve Young on another team.

  17. Season Is Over Says:

    In four years there was one fake five-game winning streak. What else?

  18. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    I am on the record as being a big JW fan, and still believe he has great days ahead of him…

    … but if these numbers don’t concern you… they probably should.

    It is alarming, and it HAS to be better.

  19. ATrain Says:

    Hope is a Buc’s Fans middle name

    Hope the new guys get better

    Hope a FA comes here and kicks butt

    Hope GMC plays

  20. AlteredEgo Says:

    Either L&K&J are back next year
    or they ALL go….and start over
    I suspect if a change is to be made Licht draws the short straw and K&J return under the watchful eye of a new GM
    that way the new GM has a working knowledge of the coaches and roster
    and in 2020 he’ll make his big moves for the next chapter in Buc history

  21. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

    The thing I don’t get is why many here are ready to dump Jameis when every player we have drafted has pretty much regressed under Koetter. Wouldn’t you want to try a new Coach first to see if he can improve these players? We have a ton of talent on this team just need the right coach to pull that out of these guys. It’s coaching up! Just look at the difference from Fisher to McVay. Just about everyone of those players has leaps n bounds improved since he took over. Go Bucs and may the force be with you this offseason!

  22. Buccnbeleiver Says:

    @Joe

    You’re the only sportswriter writer in the world that still thinks Jameis is a franchise QB.

  23. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

    I’m as big a Jameis fan as any, but this is just unacceptable. All year long we’ve talked about how the defense is the reason we’re losing, but the fact is that our offense has lost the last two games for us. I don’t know why, but it seems our offense has been grounded for the last two weeks, and maybe it’s because our offense is too predictable? However, I think its because we dont have anyone to stretch the field due to OJ and DJax being out. Godwin hasn’t performed as well as a #2 as I would’ve hoped, as he’s put up two brutal performances in a row. I think these last two games will say a lot about Godwin, and about our offense as well.

  24. Fartman Says:

    yeah a loss would set us up pretty good to start over at QB.

  25. pick6 Says:

    don’t the bucs also give up 35 to 40 points every time they go on the road? i’d be shaky trying to lead an offense that has to overcome that level of ineptitude

  26. Robert Says:

    I’d take Bruce Gradkrowski over crabman

  27. JimmyJack Says:

    It’s not about wanting to move on from Winston. It’s about realizing he has been a bad QB in most of his games here. His body of work in the last two seasons has been atrocious and contributed to losses.

    At the end of the day I just want better QB play. Our new GM/HC is going to have to address that position. I like Winston and think he can play better football but there’s no excuses for his poor performances.
    We deserve a better football team then this pile of garbage…..at any costs.

  28. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

    ^^ Fans like this are the reason we have a terrible fanbase

  29. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

    Not Jimmy, Robert.

  30. JimmyJack Says:

    Pretty sure Robert is a yankee fan. Doesn’t represent our fanbase in the slightest.

  31. Robert Says:

    f yall. I don’t support losers or c r i m i n a l s . and definitely not BOTH

    if crabman wasn’t a #1 pick would he not have been kicked to the street long ago?

  32. MHBuc25 Says:

    The Glazers will make their decision based on the off the field behavior and lying to them, not fanboy stats anyway. It’s about embarrassing their organization right after they drafted a QB in 2009 that did the same thing. Although the Glazer family deserves all this bad karma, this is how they will make their decision.

  33. Bucsfanman Says:

    So, it MUST be the defense’s fault! Right?!

  34. NPRSageBoy Says:

    Time for a total housecleaning. This entire organization sucks like a Hoover/Dyson hybrid. GM, HC and QB all need to exit at seasons end.

  35. LakeLand Says:

    There’s a reason why the QB is the only position player

    To have a Win-Loss record

  36. AlteredEgo Says:

    I finally figured out Jamyth’s jersey number……
    3 and out !

  37. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Buccnbeleiver Says:
    “@Joe

    You’re the only sportswriter writer in the world that still thinks Jameis is a franchise QB.”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    That’s definitely not true, Buccnbeleiver (sp). — I listen to Sports Radio from all different areas of the country every single day, and there are a lot of them out there that still believe JW can be a franchise quarterback with better circumstances.
  38. Loyaltotheend Says:
    Cue the excuses from FSU fans happy he made them relevant again
  39. SOEbuc Says:
    I can’t say anything about his numbers and I don’t like numbers anyway cus I watch every freaking Bucs game.
    The many stupid interceptions numbers I will understand. But this kid came into the NFL at 20 years old. Only thing even remotely helpful to this guy are his receivers can make catches. Taught up by a terrible, weak offensive scheme. A terrible all around coaching staff that never changed. Never given an above average o-line. And never even close to a good defense unless you consider a five game stretch at the end of a non-playoff year good.
    YOU WANNA TALK SOME F#CKING NUMBERS: “Bucs defense has given up 30 or more points eight times in Winston’s 12-game road losing streak. Offense has scored 27 or more five times in the streak and still lost — vs. Giants, Bengals, Falcons this year, Bills and Cardinals last year.”
    Defense wins championships
  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
    BucLover727 Says
    “Opportunity means nothing if you’re not prepared for it.
    -Ronde Barber”
    That is a very good quote.
  41. Lord Cornelius Says:
    This post may be double posted or it just got lost. But here’s some “excuses”:
    -In those 11 games the D has given up an average of 32 points per game
    -The worst D in the entire league in 2018 gives up 29.9 points per game
    -In those 11 games the D held the other team under 30 points 3 times:
    1. Last week. Offense sh** the bed against #1 D in the league.
    2. 2017 @ Panthers. Winston put us ahead in the 4th quarter only for D to give up a game winning TD drive with only enough time for a gadget play.
    3. 2017 @ Packers. Winston put us ahead in the 4th quarter only to never see the field again as the D gave up a game tying drive late to Brett f*cking Hundley and then a game winning TD drive 1st possession in OT.
    There was also a 30 point loss to Buffalo in these games in which Winston put the team ahead in the 4th only to watch the D choke it away to Tyrod f*cking Taylor.
    So basically in this sample size we have had the worst defense in the entire NFL. Most QBs go 0-11 in that scenario. Regardless Winston had 3 potential game winning drives in this period of time; 2 of which came in the only 3 games we held a team under 30 points.
    But yeah QB has been our problem. Not an awful defense for the last 5-10 years..
  42. warfield42 Says:
    SOEbuc, great point! Our fan base lacks good football IQ and good business sense. If you look at our team from an investments standpoint, identifying
    and keeping your key parts is vital. Additionally, creating a window of opportunity for success should be a strategy that is embraced by the entire organization.
    For example, instead of concocting these 1 year “win now” plans, the Bucs would be wise to develop an O-line, a running game, a short to medium passing game, and allow the defense to establish an identity over the next 2+ years. By that time, Jameis will be 27 years old, in his prime, and our opponents will be led by a 42 yr old Brees, a 36+ yr old Ryan, and a beat up 33 yr old Newton. The Bucs would have effectively created a 5-6 year window where we would have the best QB in our division (barring the introduction of some phenom by our rivals)
    During those 2 years, the Bucs should focus on the fundamentals of being a winning organization, work ethic, toughness, understanding situational football, good special teams play, etc. That is what wins football games, and that is what is sustainable to making a good locker room environment.
    Winston, Evans, O.J., Godwin, Marpet, J. Watson, Hump, D. Smith (RT) are good pieces to build from on offense. None would be over 28 in 2+ yrs.
    On Defense,
    Kwon, Lavonte, Beckwith, Carlton Davis, Hargreaves, M.J. Stewart, Vea, Whitehead, and J. Evans, while not ideal, are players worth keeping.
    I know some may disagree, but the current model of plug in FA’s in hopes of winning right away hasn’t worked in over a decade, so why not at least try building the franchise like we did in our heyday. If it works, we may end up with a 5-6 window where we’re the team to beat in the NFC South!
    Go Bucs!!!
  43. Im tired and 87 is right Says:
    SOE Bucs these fans don’t get it. They don’t see the big picture and just want to point the finger at someone. If they actually watched the games they would see what you and I have seen which has been an attrocious defense. I’m not saying Jameis has been perfect but he has been far from the issue for this team.
  44. SOEbuc Says:
    I was thinking Ron Rivera, but now I’m loving Kris Richard. I think Buckner has the ability to be a good DC, also. Both these guys have great energy and could put together a great defense. Both feel strongly about players playing to their fullest and companionship.
    With those two, if the defense blows it in the second half players are gonna look like Edward Norton in Fight Club leaving the stadium.
    An good OC and we could be back on the map.
  45. SOEbuc Says:
    warfield42
    It really does start with good coaching and management. Was a lot of talented, expensive players you mentioned and they just haven’t been coached correctly over the years. Seems other teams every year have some good vets, not huge name youth and players in their prime that don’t cost as much and yet you see at least one of those types of teams look good and get into the playoffs. Not us. Spend a ton of money and been the dumpster fire of the NFC South for years.
    Glazer kids and the management they’ve hired (Dominik and Licht) all have no clue how to get good coaches and staff. Malcom hired Chucky to win a Super Bowl and he had dementia
  46. Season Is Over Says:
    I fail to see why everything about the team is now the reason for Winston failing to live up to being the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. If you asked any NFL fan they would say Winston has not been good enough. The rest of the other fans don’t even know who he is.
    Bad fans are the reason Winston has left his team in the gutter. Lmao! This is the pinnacle of delusion. I am not good enough because my coworkers didn’t cover for me? Yes, it sounds that ridiculous.
  47. SOEbuc Says:
    warfield42
    “Malcom hired Chucky to win a Super Bowl and he had dementia.”
    Then the Glazer kids fired him two years after he won a division title.Uggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
    I like Kris Richard at the moment. Hope to see the Glazers and Licht in Dallas this weekend.
  48. SOEbuc Says:
    I think it was SI 2019 mock draft that had us taking the QB from OSU at #9. Hahahahahahaha. Anyone who thinks Winston isn’t going to start next year is mentally unhinged. And if you think we should draft a someone high up in a weak QB draft, you’re an idiot.
  49. Rod Munch Says:
    Fun fact from ESPN.
    While Fitz has a 100 QB rating, his QBR is 64.4.
    Winston has a 85 QB rating, but his QBR is 72.6.
    QBR, while it’s not perfect by any means, it eliminates a lot of garbage stats (ie Mike Glennon having a high completion % because he’d throw a 3 yard completed pass on 3rd and 13 instead of throwing downfield and getting an incompletion) and worthless plays, and rewards big plays when it matters (such as you get more credit for a 15 yard pass on 3rd and 13 as opposed to a 15 yard pass on 1st and 10).
    Anywho, as far as QBR goes, Winston is #5 in the NFL. #5. Overall. Ahead of guys like Brady, Luck, Wilson, Wentz, Goff, Rodgers, Newton, etc etc etc. Only Mahomes, Brees, Rivers and Roethlisberger are ahead of Winston on the QBR list.
  50. down in the dirt Doug Says:
    DEAR OWNERS–NOT TO SOUND BORING–BUT–PLEASE SELECT A HEAD OF FOOTBALL OPERATIONS—NOW!! This will take some of the pressure off your future decisions.
  51. Reach87 Says:
    Thanks Rod Munch. Worst fans ever. Go Bucs!
  52. BrianBucs Says:
    You are what your record says you are. Period.
    Winston has lost 11 straight road games.
    Just another one of Jason Licht’s terrible draft picks.
    That is just great! Since his QBR by ESPN standards is so high, we should……..
    trade him for Aaron Rodgers or
    trade him for Andrew Luck or
    trade him for Jared Goff or
    trade him for Russell Wilson etc. etc. etc.
    Wait, ………… what? You don’t think those teams would trade for Winston? Couldn’t you just explain that his QBR is 5th in the league?
    tickrdr
  55. Rod Munch Says:
    tickrdr <– triggered. LOL!
  56. Rod Munch Says:
    BrianBucs <- Another bumper sticker bore who just repeats 2 second bytes over and over again and calls it a day. Anywho Rodgers is a loser this year, that's all on him, right? Defense, no running game, coaching, none of that matters, his record says he's a loser so he's a loser and needs to be cut, right?
    Try being less boring in the future.
  57. Season Is Over Says:
    Remember when everyone said they needed the last six games to see what they had in Winston?
  58. firethecannons Says:
    forget the coaching up Bucs need to move on from Jameis either this year or next This year we need a new GM and all new coaching staff ok with keeping Jameis one extra year but I do not expect anything good we need Offensive tackle 1st round
  59. Me Says:
    Winston will move to another team and win a ring. It’s the buccaneer way.
  60. Dan Says:
    I’ll repeat myself from last year when half of you were all like give these 3 a chance. Same Coach Same GM same qb same ugly record. And look I was right. And so many of you argued but here we sit. Why did you think it would be different when They sucked last year I’ll tell you why it’s called unfounded optimism and it’s not grounded in reality so next time you’re all happy they give a coach in extension when he’s had a terrible season just remember if the coach has a terrible second season the third should look just the same it’s unlikely that an unproven coach will change his stripes so here we sit people
  61. Jean Lafitte Says:
    11 games and counting <—- pretty pathetic …not one single game could JW strap the team on his back to get a win? Apparently the defense has to throw a shutout for us to win. Especially when you only average 19 ppg away.
  62. Wausa Says:
    Jamies get as far away from this terrible franchise as possible.
    I am confident you will have great success in a franchise like the Redskins, Jaguars or Giants.
    The Bucs deserve more McCown and Glennon.
  63. miken Says:
    @season is over… yep, and now we see it. Remember, last year- all he needs is a D? Has one and it doesn’t help. Or two years ago- just needs weapons… no one has more weapons, doesn’t help. So JW, just needs a different coach, weapons, great run game, good d, great o line then he will win. Every qb can win like that.
    @me, not really the buc way, happened once in the last 30 years w dilfer.
