Losing Streak Misleading
December 19th, 2018Joe discussed this on the internationally popular “Ira Kaufman Podcast” but will dive into the subject deeper here.
It stunned Joe to learn that after the loss to the Crows in Baltimore on Sunday, it has been over two years since America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston won on the road.
Over two years!
Joe railed about this on Ira’s pod. The last start Jameis won was at San Diego on Dec. 4, 2016. The locker room was euphoric. That was the rowdy postgame ceremony where Dirk Koetter uttered the famous words “Speak softly and carry a big motherf#$king stick!”
Team Glazer was beyond elated, almost willing to do high-fives with reporters. Their faces with wide smiles from ear-to-ear.
Jameis had rallied the Bucs from behind for the 28-21 win and Bucs fans invaded Jack Murphy Stadium and took over the side of the stadium behind the Bucs’ bench.
With that win, the Bucs were in the thick of a playoff race with an 8-5 record.
There was no way being in that raucous locker room anyone would be thinking that it would be the last road win in over two years, or that two years later Koetter would be days away from being removed as coach and there would be sober discussion as to whether Jameis’ tenure with the Bucs was nearing an end.
It is just stunning how the team bottomed out since.
Joe should have known better when griping about Jameis’ road losing streak, now at 11 games. Citing win-loss records with quarterbacks is almost irresponsible if not lazy, and Greg Auman of The Athletic peeled back the onion skins on the streak.
Bucs defense has given up 30 or more points eight times in Winston’s 12-game road losing streak. Offense has scored 27 or more five times in the streak and still lost — vs. Giants, Bengals, Falcons this year, Bills and Cardinals last year.
— Greg Auman (@gregauman) December 18, 2018
Auman later corrected the losing streak to 11 road losses for Jameis.
But yes, the defense. The GD gutless defense (until recently).
Joe forgot all about how in Buffalo and in Green Bay last year Jameis gave the Bucs a lead in the fourth quarter, only to stand helplessly on the sidelines and watch the defense urinate in the wind.
Has Jameis played lights out ball? Not always. But the man has gotten no help from his defense. And yeah, that’s on Koetter. It was Koetter, for reasons not quite clear, ignored the defense until it was too late.
Dragging his feet on making needed changes on defense not only doomed Koetter himself, it may have doomed Jameis’ days in Tampa Bay as well.
If Jameis and the Bucs won the four games last year the defense puked away– in which Jameis gave the Bucs the lead in the fourth quarter — Joe doesn’t think anyone outside of the devout Jameis haters would be banging the drum for him to be run out of town.
December 19th, 2018 at 5:46 am
Jameis is 21-31 The Bucs since Joe Bucs Fan came along is what or at least since Gruden left? 55 – 103 Neither losing record is misleading!
December 19th, 2018 at 5:52 am
The only question is will Jameis ever be a winning QB in this league? Anyone who doesn’t have doubt is a devout Winston Apologist or worse.
December 19th, 2018 at 5:55 am
Even with those 4 wins Jameis is 25-27, hardly inspiring for a number 1 pick overall in his 4th season.
December 19th, 2018 at 5:57 am
give Jamies one more year, who you gonna replace him with? Mark Sanchez?????
December 19th, 2018 at 6:06 am
It’s a team win and it’s definitely a team loss. The road losses are not misleading unless you pick an angle to sugarcoat Jameis. Let’s just admit that almost everyone on this team is underachieving. Many of those underachieving are a coaches problem. Koetter has unfortunately killed his opportunity here for not being able to get Jameis to play the way he’s been playing the last 3 games – like a game manager and not the gunslinging hero he is in his wet dreams. We have a game manager and I’m ok with that. With a great defense and a good RB, you can go win a SB.
I think it is only ok to keep Wisnton one more year if we keep Monken as OC. Let Koetter and Jason go, let the scouting department go, keep Duffner unless you can get a bigger fish.
Why has the chatter on Jack Del Rio as a DC or HC gone silent?
This team is NOT that far away from turning things around with a competent GM, HC, and DC. They have to let the dead weight go and get some real talent in here. No more Mitch Unreins, Beau Allens, and Caleb Benenochs. Do not over pay D. Smith either. He’s Chris Baker disguised as a LT.
December 19th, 2018 at 6:08 am
Jack Del Rio is from Destin, FL. Interview him.
December 19th, 2018 at 6:34 am
@lambchop … “It’s a team win and it’s definitely a team loss. The road losses are not misleading unless you pick an angle to sugarcoat Jameis.” BINGO … we have a winner.
The ‘angle’ you forgot to mention Joe is TURNOVERS. In looking at those 11 road losses in which Jameis started, Bucs committed 26 turnovers, while our opponents committed only 9 turnovers. We lost the turnover battle in 7 of those 9 games, and tied in 2 other games. The vast majority of those 26 turnovers was committed by … Jameis (to include 16 INTs). Hard to win, on the road on or home, when you keep gifting the ball back to the opposition. And yes Joe, the ‘cost’ of those turnovers is reflected in the DEFENSE’s stats, not the offense’s stats.
December 19th, 2018 at 6:34 am
Everybody agrees that Jamies performance thus far should not get him a mega long term contract

December 19th, 2018 at 6:34 am
Everybody agrees that Jamies performance thus far should not get him a mega long term contract
This is exactly the point……Joe always presents keeping Jameis or getting rid of him….
I think the question is What are the details of the extended contract.
If you sign Jameis to a team friendly contract with minimal guarantees, high on incentives….it permits you to eventually replace him with a draft pick (2020, 2021)
So the answer is keep Jameis but don’t pay him too much.
December 19th, 2018 at 6:47 am
Winston is a backup period. However since there is no one else we should probly keep him and make him compete for his job. If there was anyone better I would say get rid of him but if we do we will still have a lousy quarterback might as well keep him For the new coach
December 19th, 2018 at 6:54 am
How long do we have to wait?
December 19th, 2018 at 6:54 am
The kid needs a new voice in his ear as a last chance and a shot in a little different O system
Dirks down the field attack with little commitment to the running game really exposes any QB
He excels at the TE seam, in routes at 20 yds, quick release when he sees it fast and tends to throw on a high plane all the time unless it’s a 5 yd or less throw – put him in a quicker, shorter throw, more balanced offense and I bet you see a very different QB
December 19th, 2018 at 6:58 am
I just wonder when reading these comments, do any of these people watch other football games or teams actually play? Im not in defend Jameis mode but guys our defense sucks, our running game sucks, and our kicking game sucks. Forgot the QB name who do we expect or who has ever won with that type of team around them? What is the obsession with blaming the QB when it is proven the entire team is trash.
December 19th, 2018 at 6:59 am
Much rather watch victories where our QB plays well the entire 60 minutes of a game. Waiting for a comeback attempt is the most difficult way to win football games. Its not just road games that Jameis has struggled ,its also against the better defenses in the league. quite frequently they seem to have his number, and often predict the play or force him into a play that they are prepared for.
The Dallas game for example, will help determine where he is at this point,
he has to take the game over early and step on their throat,IMO.
December 19th, 2018 at 7:05 am
Defense rules
Dang man. I’ll give you serious street cred. You are always Johnny on the spot with interesting takes and stats.
The Joes should hire yah. 😂
December 19th, 2018 at 7:09 am
Amen Lambchop!
Defense Rules- I don’t think Joe “forgot” about the turnovers. Pointing to the defense time and again is the only way to detract from Jameis’ weaknesses and make any case whatsoever for keeping an, at best, average QB at this point in his career.
What’s the common argument? “Jameis gave the defense a lead…” BUT, what the argument doesn’t take into consideration, as you mention, is why the team was in a position to allow the opposition an opportunity to come back and win in the first place. The Buffalo and Green Bay games should have had the Bucs running away. As is usually the case, the Jameis fumble returned for a TD is omitted in the GB game. In Buffalo, the Bucs had to overcome 6 fumbles, 2 lost and an interception. One of the fumbles, in Jameis’ defense, was Humphries late in the 4th quarter.
For those that watch these travesties called “games” and understand that football is a team sport, and complementary, know that what happens early in a game can have an effect on the outcome.
So, while the defense might allow a TD for a win. We might ask the question why the defense was put in a position to defend in the first place.
To summarize this rant, we KNOW 2 things: 1) Our defense sucks! 2) Jameis Winston turns the ball over too much.
December 19th, 2018 at 7:09 am
The streak was a team effort and Jameis did his part too.
December 19th, 2018 at 7:12 am
with Team Glazer’s past track record, there is optimistic hope that they will will be able to make us winners one day -right? We may have some more bad streaks to endure but I believe the future looks 🌞
December 19th, 2018 at 7:12 am
Just sign Nick Foles!
December 19th, 2018 at 7:15 am
There is nothing misleading about losses it is what it is and its glaringly horrible. You would have to dive deeper into the game and see the 3 and outs or the ints that jameis threw during those 4 games you have highlighted. This seems to be another excuse for jameis. Its really funny all of these excuses ppl come up for jameis. Tom Brady was unable to complete that comeback on sunday so now he is “washed up” allegedly, there are so many other factors throughout those games.
December 19th, 2018 at 7:19 am
Does Jameis deserve all the blame. Of course not.
I think he gets criticized a little more for obvious reasons :
-Any qb is the most important player on the field. They can win and lose games just like Koetter said in hard knocks. Everyone knows it’s a team game 11 v 11. However , they get paid the big bucks for obvious reason and that’s why they get the franchise moniker.
-Turnovers turnovers turnovers. They will lose a game for yah and Jameis is 1st or second in turnovers since he came in league.
-the biggest reason at least for me … is the excuses …especially here in this site….there is always an excuse from the messiah cult /…he has a bad game and this site calls it a “mixed bag”. The cult points the finger everywhere but at Jameis. He makes a good play and it’s “I told you guys he is elite “. You morons for second guessing Jameis. “. Oh I thought he couldn’t hit someone in stride”. I mean grown men acting like kids defending every play.
—-
He is 11 Games below winning record. Does the rest of team struggle? No question. Is he playing better this year – of course. But he has to win some more close games Qbs do that. If you guys think we deserve average at qb then that’s fine. One thing he is not – elite. He is not HOF as some cult members have claimed. . It’s pretty obvious so far …but I think the new staff could do something for him. Who knows. It’s just average play so far.
December 19th, 2018 at 7:19 am
@TBBF … “So the answer is keep Jameis but don’t pay him too much.” I agree with ya TBBF, BUT … we’re committed to $21 mil for next year IF he’s still on the roster. IMO it’s worth the gamble: keep Jameis for 1 more ‘prove-it’ year at that price but with a new HC and new QB coach. Jameis has talent, but right now he’s not playing with confidence. And he’s not showing the FIELD LEADERSHIP that the Bucs’ offense so desperately needs from its QB. A new HC & QB coach, combined with fixing our OLine & RB group, could be exactly what Jameis needs to regain his swagger. If not, then you’re right, there’s always the 2020 draft.
BTW, I think that Monken as OC & Duffner as DC have done quite well with what they have to work with. Wouldn’t be at all opposed to keeping both of them, PROVIDING that’s what the new HC wants (he should have the right to select his own staff IMO).
December 19th, 2018 at 7:24 am
Clodhopper is spot on, a team streak with Jameis doing his part.
December 19th, 2018 at 7:25 am
Looking at the glass being half full, we are more than 50% from having a winning record with 5 wins and possibly 2 more this season. Next season can actually be a winning record. We are getting close.
December 19th, 2018 at 7:26 am
This is the ultimate team sport. Losses and wins don’t fall on one player or one coach. Fans quickly look to blame specific players after every loss and Jameis is the QB, so he will get criticized the most. The national and at times the local media, spins a narrative that makes Jameis seem like he’s one of the worst leaders and QB’s in the league, when that isn’t even close to being true. At times, I don’t know if the Anti-Jameis mob is just trolling or being serious. The 24 year-old isn’t allowed to make a mistake, or he’ll be quickly crucified.
December 19th, 2018 at 7:35 am
Isn’t a “franchise” qb suppose to outscore other franchise qbs once in awhile?
Unless Jameis is on a good team with strong weaponsa good d and special teams we can’t win
December 19th, 2018 at 7:35 am
Allowed to make a mistake? Jameis has been allowed to make multiple mistakes for multiple years. That is part of the problem. Acceptance of mediocrity. But we need one more year because…blah blah blah
December 19th, 2018 at 7:36 am
“It looks very likely that Ron Rivera will be fired at carolina.
Rivera knows everything about JW and what he can do. Rivera is a top dog when it comes to defenses.
Keep Monken and let him run the offense like the 1st 3 games when he had total control from Klueless
He can keep Duffner but the Bucs shouldnt worry because Rivera knows defenses
*Allow The Teflon Gump to be back but the Glazers demand to bring in a asistant GM and completely overhaul the scouting and personnel dept”
Kobe Faker
Teflon Gump stays, Kobe Faker goes
12 days, 8 hours and change
December 19th, 2018 at 7:39 am
There should be much more focus on the architect of this defense and why it has been unsuccessful.instead of the four failed comebacks, IMO Jason Licht did a terrible job bringing in quality free agents two years ago. to shore up the defense.
This year wasn’t a lot better.. Signing a player with an injury history of concussions that ended up on injured reserve is an example of little or no homework. Projecting part time players into starting roles has failed.
He has gambled and lost his wad in his failed attempts to build this defense.
December 19th, 2018 at 7:41 am
In perspective, a 7-9 record to finnish the season would be a sign of improvement from the previous season. Maybe not the playoffs that was desired but still progress. Also, the offense ranking overall has increased and the defense has been much better. There is hope in my humble opinion.
December 19th, 2018 at 7:52 am
Joe is being very misleading this morning.
To start with, you are what your record says you are.
Those are Team loses.
In those road loses, how many times did the defense have to bail Winston out because of turnovers, bonehead plays or bad decision making? Plenty. And how many of those loses in the 4th quarter were because of the offense giving the opponent good field position because of not being able to move or retain control of the ball? Several.
Gotta tell the entire story Joe, not just cherry pick
Good QB’s know how to win on the road. Period.
December 19th, 2018 at 7:58 am
Very misleading indeed I mean Jameis did throw this TD which contributed to a score:

December 19th, 2018 at 8:07 am
Another reason for a new “needles bureaucracy” as you put it, needs to be brought in. They gave the HC job to a OC after his first year which was a 6-10 season, and knows NOTHING about defense. Pretty sure it was the Glazers that kicked his butt buddy Smitty to the door, not Koetter. No major coaches brought in except for Buckner last year after Koetter’s third season HC, 5-11 record.
River boat Ronnie numero uno.
December 19th, 2018 at 8:12 am
Is this article another attempt to sell a bad product (QB) to the masses? It’s like, hey… this product sucks but it doesn’t suck as bad as you thought it sucked, but yes, it still sucks.
December 19th, 2018 at 8:17 am
Nothing really misleading about the losses joe, Jameis just can’t finda way to get it done. The D chockedaway a game at carolina last year 22-19? Jameis had 3 turnovers. At Minnesota ? he had3 picks and 2 fumbles. At buffalo? we lose 27-30 and a pick and and fumble cost us as much as the last 1 minute of the game. Are the browns any good? of course not, but there qb gets it done and has twice as many td passes as picks but of course we are all haters if after 4 years we still don’t see it. Of course, you don’t just get rid of him and go back to the days of Chucky where you are pulling middle aged washed ups off the scrap heap. You keep him till he cost too much or you have some one and next year he won’t cost to much, so he comes back unless you think you can makea trade or you are going to draft one.

Jameis comes to the line at the goal line. The defense bunches for the usual stop.Jameis crosses the goal for a touchdown. We all agree that are soft coach has been keeping Jameis in check. And why the hell didn’t Koeter get a big pair and trust Jameis every now and then to do something on first down besides hand off for one yard in a cloud of dust! SO FRUSTATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 19th, 2018 at 8:47 am

Exactly. Only coach that has been in this kids ear since he came into the league at 20 is a guy who Bucs fans want castrated. Get him a good offensive coach that runs a more exciting playbook (not talking about splash plays) with routes that fit Jameis’ needs and he will look much better. His run or fake run pass when he’s close to the line of scrimmage has been working very well. Only took Koetter four and a half years to discover that.
December 19th, 2018 at 8:50 am
I’m in the think we should sign him very short term crowd. I’m not exactly excited about the QB prospects coming out next year. Hopefully, the next HC and GM will focus on defense…. and the trenches.
December 19th, 2018 at 8:54 am
Where is that drum?
I would not sign him to any kind of long term deal.
December 19th, 2018 at 8:57 am
Usually don’t care about numbers being posted, but this is ridiculous.
Jameis haters will jump back on the bandwagon if he plays well and takes us to the playoffs. “I always believed.” Give him time and at some point with a good offensive coach, this team or not, he’ll be a good QB. Much better with a better defense.
DEFENSES WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Keep Jameis for one more year (under a new coach) and also draft a QB high (trade up if need be).
Let Jameis earn the starting Gig. If not the new coach has his guy and on we go

…or Drew Lock from Mizzou. There are a few 6’4″ strong armed guys out there…
December 19th, 2018 at 9:37 am
I mean really you don’t have to wait, if you don’t like Winston that much there are a lot of other teams out there to go root for. No he’s not elite and he’s got deficiencies and issues but looking at his team of weak minded players and coaches he has not taken a step forward and no one really has because they don’t really coach players. He’ll get one more year and he should, if he’s not signed to a long term deal that means he’s hit his ceiling. You people saying he’s a backup or he will never be good are those people that call players a bust have way through a rookie season. It’s like your scared to give the guy another year. Don’t get why you miss the mike glennon days so much and the last thing we need or I want is a rookie quarterback to start this all over
December 19th, 2018 at 9:57 am
So forget the QB for a moment, this team has scored 29, 34, 28, 35, 33 and 27 in different road games over the past two years and lost and we are talking about the QB??????? People need to get their head out of the sand and look at the big picture and not try to pin the results of this dumpster fire on one player or before you know even that portion of the team will suck.
December 19th, 2018 at 10:18 am
Winston is 21-9 when defense allows 24 or less points
December 19th, 2018 at 10:26 am
Joe:
Face it we have a large amount of dumb fans.
My guess is Jamies and his agent will move on from the Bucs next year.
With such a large amount of fans and media not wanting him here I am confident he will want to find a new home.

Joe there’s a lyric from a great song that Quincy Jones united over 20 singers to sing and it goes like this … “ there comes a time when you heed a certain call” this call to you is Jameis Winston … give it up bruh stop finding excuses for this dude who can not win games in the NFL
December 19th, 2018 at 11:42 am
@tampa demon…. Jameis has never won a game in the nfl if the d gives up more than 23 points. Also, the d gives up more points when the qb has so many turnovers.
December 19th, 2018 at 11:58 am
Last year we beat the PATS & Falcons at home had we had a kicker and we beat the Packers & BILLS on the road with a defense. This year in his first start on the road against Falcons the defense and kicking game lost that game not Jameis. Yes he had a pick in the end zone but so F ING WHAT! Since we didn’t have a running game and we were behind by 3 scores at the half he had to throw the ball over 40 times so excuse me if a pick occurs. Do some research, I mean in his first year we were 6-6 until Kwon was suspended on a HORRIBLE TEAM! Football is the ultimate team sport. So he’s not Aaron Rogers big deal, but he is very talented. Stop buying in to this “TOTAL Turnover Stat”! It DOES NOT TELL THE WHOLE STORY!
December 19th, 2018 at 12:04 pm
Hey Miken
That is the dumbest take in the history of takes! How many wins does any QB have when the defense gives up 23. Jameis has won his share. When he leaves the field w a lead w 2 mins on the clock and the defense keys down U CANT BLAME HIM even if he threw picks in that same scenario! He did his job he had them in the lead. To pull that take out of your ass PROVES this is NOT about football. If we draft a QB let’s count how many wins he will have If the D gives up 24 points. Hopefully he has a running game and a coaching staff that has a FREAKING clue!

Sorry to hurt your feelings Jimmy, just expected more from a top pick in year 4.The browns have a crappy roster but theres baker throwing twice as many tds as ints and our guy has the same # of turnovers as tds. That fact that even his biggest supporters wouldn’t even think of giving him a long term deal tells you all you need to know.
December 19th, 2018 at 12:39 pm
and jimmy… its not a take. Some said he had a good record in points where the other team score less than 24. all is said was in 4 years he has 0 wins we he needs to score more than 23. i was shocked he hasn’t. Also, shocking to you i guess the more you turn the ball over, the more the other team scores and the less you score. Those are facts, not my dumb take.
December 19th, 2018 at 12:49 pm
but, but, but crabman is probowl HOF material and the franchise will crumble with any other QB
December 19th, 2018 at 12:53 pm
@miken,
If that is true, thank you for the shout out. I didn’t have a way to check those posted stats. – My intent was to add agreement on the fact that the D has had most to do with his W-L record.
December 19th, 2018 at 12:53 pm

December 19th, 2018 at 1:30 pm

December 19th, 2018 at 2:00 pm
There goes JIMMY! You did it this time miken! It’s never Jameis’ fault, don’t you know?!
Here is a completely neutral, factual based comment:
The TEAM has a better, statistical chance of winning if it does not turn the ball over….FACT!
0 TO=73.4% winning percentage
1 TO=56.7%
2 TO=40.7%
3 TO=18%
So, based on statistical research, regardless of the team, defense, coach, or kicker, teams win at a higher percentage when not turning the ball over.
Just some interesting trivia.
Incidentally, the Bucs are DEAD LAST in turnover margin. So, I guess it’s everybody but the QB on offense that is to blame!

Again we question our ability to win. This really sucks. If he wouldn’t have thrown so many Int’s it may be different. Once we fix the damn Defence maybe we’ll win a few games. All of this is so tiring. Get it together now before its too late. Fans are dropping off quickly.

Joe the defense is giving up 37 points per game during those loses! Can you believe it! That’s insane, not even Brady can win those odds.
