Are The Bucs Pursuing A Trade For John Harbaugh?

December 17th, 2018

Joe saw Buccaneers co-chairmen Bryan and Joel Glazer dressed in business attire yesterday exiting the Tampa Bay locker room shortly after the loss to Baltimore with serious-business looks on their faces.

So what were they doing during the game or before it?

Mike Florio, the ultimate NFL insider guru at ProFootballTalk.com, wrote a piece prior to the Ravens-Bucs kickoff about how teams are still permitted to trade for NFL head coaches and Ravens chief John Harbaugh might be a target of teams right now.

Rules changed after Team Glazer traded for Chucky after the 2001 season, but a deal for a head coach can still be swung.

In a 2014 story, Florio explained that a swap for a head coach is not like a traditional player deal, “Typically the coach’s contract doesn’t get shipped to a new team.  Instead, the two teams agree on compensation (draft picks and/or cash) that would be exchanged if the new team works out a contract with the coach.  If that happens, the current team releases the coach in exchange for the compensation.”

For months there has been chatter that the Ravens are looking to replace Harbaugh. Heck, that talk goes back a few years.

In 11 seasons with the Ravens, including this year, Harbaugh has just one losing campaign on his resume. He’s also got mind-blowing 15-10 record in playoff games. Put on your math hats and think long and hard about how difficult it is to have better than a .500 record in the playoffs.

Joe would welcome Harbaugh to Tampa with open arms, especially if all it costs Team Glazer is a fat check.

  1. tmaxcon Says:

trading is the only time bucs ever hired a quality coach outside of McKay who took on a real expansion team…

  2. tmaxcon Says:

the only way this team can attract a decent coach is via trade. sad…. like I always say no quality coach would choose the bucs organization they have to force them to come.

  3. Eric Says:

    McCarthy has a better record.

Harbaugh is working on his fourth straight not playoff appearance.

  4. Joe Blahak Says:

    for draft picks? absolutely not!!

  5. tmaxcon Says:

I hate to break it to the Jameis Haters that if glazers can sucker either Harbaugh both are Jameis guys especially brother jim… oh the irony of the haters hoping for a Harbaugh only to learn harbaugh loves them some jameis

  6. JJV Says:

Or Team Glazer could decide to keep things the same again with some tweaks. They are in total control. They have the power, money, and total authority to do whatever they want for their team.

  7. Dewey Selmon Says:

And he won’t have Ozzie Newsome picking players for him. Newsome’s GM history is impressive.

  8. Wright Says:

Our offense sucks, our defense is starting to look much better, and now rumors are flying we’ll trade for a head coach? Are we going to win a super bowl next year?

  9. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Dewey right on and if this is he brain child of licht what a mooohRon….if harbaugh comes here he is going to want final say over personnel and uild team his way not loser licht way….maybe go pry ozzie out of retirement for 4 years

  10. JJV Says:

It would not be a shock if they keep Koetter as well as Licht. Either way, they will still make plenty of money next season.

Come guys seriously I don’t know about you and your motives sometimes. When have the glazers not been dressed in business attire at a cold road game or even at a home game. That serious look was about their franchise that just lost another game. This team can’t afford to give up draft picks for a coach that may or may not make a difference for years

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

I would still take him. If he gets a decent OC and DC he would coach special teams. Send this years #1 and next years #3 and Dotson. Some things you don’t say to the media. Even even when everyone is thinking it.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

    Eric Says:

so what your are saying is he fits perfectly for the glazers???

  14. TOM Says:

If the Bucs landed John Harbough I would like to see him bring his current staff with him. If the Ravens want draft picks forget it.

  15. Sarasota Garey Says:

Reckless speculation, they could have been going to a Bar Mitzvah afterwards for all we know.

  16. JJV Says:

Since we are fantasizing, why not shoot for the moon. Why don’t they get John and Jim both. They could be co-head coaches. One could be in charge of the offense while the other runs the defense. Then we could have Team Glazer and Team Harbaugh. Keep it in the family.

  17. Tony LA Says:

    Err…
It shouldn’t be hard to have a better than .500 playoff record.

The baseline, considering that in every game there is one winner and one loser, is .500. So to be minimum one game above .500 is simply to be one game over the average coach.

We should strive for more than just average. I like Harbaugh. But his teams have never seemed elite, even in the Super Bowl year. But, why the hell not?

  18. tmaxcon Says:

    Reckless speculation

that is modern journalism summed up in 2 words.

  19. Bird Says:

    Yes please

  20. NPRSageBoy Says:

Maybe the Glazer boys were on their way to the White House to see if Trump would consider trading Gen Kelley for draft picks/cash.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

A trade is the only way to keep Harbaugh off the market and there would be several team vying for his services.
I would not want to give up any draft picks…..we are staring at some cap trouble and we need our draft picks.

While we are at it….how about us drafting Oline #1 & #2

  22. tmaxcon Says:

    tbbf

why not give up draft picks it’s not like bucs know what to do with them

  23. jjbucfan Says:

Gee- where have we seen this before? We will trade them Noah Spence and Roberto Aguayo and Ronald Jones and no more than that. BTW Harbaugh is currently IN the playoffs with a dynamic young QB and a ground and pound running game- he ain’t going anywhere.

  24. dmatt Says:

I’ll take his brother Jim. He has a track record for turning losers into winners. Had the 49s GM stayed in his place n not disrespect Jim in front of his players, I’m sure Jim would have remained with the team n taken them back to the Super Bowl, or even won it. Jim’s coaching strategy…he is… a gambler, chance taker, motivator, fearless, aggressive, creative, a player’s coach, he thinks outside the box, he knows talent n how to maximize a player’s skill sets. This team is much better than the 49’s team that he took over n lead to the playoffs first year, n Super Bowl the year after. Let’s get an innovated mind at the helm as the next Bucs coach, n lead Mr Mcgoo out the front door. Enough!!!

    LAUGHING OUT FREAKING LOUD.

trump would not take a call from those mickey mouse loser glazers

  28. Waterboy Says:

I thought the league stopped allowing that after the Bucs traded for Gruden?

  29. Boogie Nightz Says:

    @tmaxcon

What is daily life like for you? When you wake up every morning, does a dark cloud hover over you raining acid? Do you get into to car accidents at least once a week? Did your fifth wife leave you for your second wife? Do you work at Wal-mart? Does 1 + 1 = 0 for you? If all those things apply to you then I will give you a pass, but I doubt that. You are the most negative poster I have ever read on JBF. If you are so down and sick of the Bucs then root for another team. I understand they have let us down for the past decade and fan frustration is warranted but you are a lost cause filled with hate like nothing I have ever seen. YOU NEVER HAVE ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY. EVER. Sorry had to get that off my chest. Say something nice for a change.

  30. rob Says:

Last time we traded for a coach we had a really good team. The trade killed our future with losing so many draft picks. We need to hire someone. Rivera, Harbaugh, Mccarthy would all be better than what we have.

  31. Joe Says:

trump would not take a call from those mickey mouse loser glazers

Is that why Trump hung out at Ed’s pad in California?

  32. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Yes please. Maybe Licht hid Ronald McDonald Jones just enough to use him as a trading “chip”. Doubtful…but we can hope. I’d even throw in Martha J. Stewart. Licht’s Out 2018 Draft is gonna leave a mark/scar.

Harbaugh would be just what this team needs…great leader and a special teams background. Just no Marty Morning-Wig, por favor.

  33. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Hmm, a trade is likely the only way to secure a component coach, but I’m not down with trading away first round picks again.

  34. Easy Says:

    I don’t want a retread coach.

  35. SOEbuc Says:

    Joe

What is the deal if you want to pick up a big time college coach under contract? Is that more like a player contract?

  36. Oxycondoms Says:

We could trade koetter to Ravens plus cash considerations in return for harbaugh and a new uniform design

  37. Realbucfan941 Says:

Omg first time ever agreeing with tmax. Depending on the pics of course but we only get them right 50% of the time.. If that. Well worth it for a quality coach. It shouldn’t be much if he’s out the door.. supposedly.

  38. D-Rome Says:

the only way this team can attract a decent coach is via trade. sad…. like I always say no quality coach would choose the bucs organization they have to force them to come.

Tony Dungy was a quality coach. He chose the Bucs!

  39. SOEbuc Says:

If this did happen, I would hope the Glazer kids would be smart enough (…hmm) to wipe the slate clean, including jerseys lol. Gonna be some fat cash but we gotta put together a good coaching staff and front office. It’s worth it when you’re handing out free tickets to a division rival team game. Not only a vet coach with playoff experience, but one that’s 15-10. Exactly what this team needs.

They only extended him for a one year contract through 2019 last year. Don’t know what that means for a draft pick or cash.

Harbaugh= Devante Adams or Ed Oliver or Greg Little in the first.

  40. SOEbuc Says:

*Harbaugh= Deandre Baker or Ed Oliver or Greg Little in the first.

    Devante Adams. Hahaha

  41. MHBuc25 Says:

You would have to be a complete dumb sucker to come coach this roster. Sad suckers are here to draw checks and do enough to keep our sad media that don’t hold them accountable at bay.

  42. SOEbuc Says:

Actually Baker is way to much of a press corner for being on the Bucs and not getting a PA flag every down.

  43. MHBuc25 Says:

If I’m Harbaugh I pull a Bo Jackson on the Bucs if they trade for me. He will look at the Bucs roster and retire before they get his desk packed in Baltimore.

  44. StoutGospel Says:

Hmmm….this article sounds an awful lot like the one that THIS GUY posted here yesterday, with the link from PFT about this very thing, for all fans here to read and comment. Hmmm. Now it’s an article.

If the Glazers were smart about a big organizational shift forward, they would definitely be trading for John Harbaugh, as this guy has been pining for for a few weeks now.

  45. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ @Stout, who is “This Guy”? – I don’t think I have seen his posts before

  46. Cobraboy Says:

Winston & McCoy for Harbaugh & Flacco.

    Do it.

  47. 813bucboi Says:

we dont have the assets to trade……not unless the ravens want mike evans, jpp and a 1st round pick…..

if the bucs make that trade, they’ve committed suicide….

    KRIS RICHARD 4 HC!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  48. Bucko40 Says:

tmaxcon- Tony Dungy wasn’t a quality Coach?

  49. StoutGospel Says:

    @TampaBayDemon….

Here is my previous post from the “Koetter, Monken in demand” thread yesterday at Noon.

    StoutGospel Says:

Check it Bucs fans! Is this guy not a clairvoyant or what?! JOHN HARBAUGH. Courtesy of PFT….

    https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/12/16/buzz-keeps-building-for-multiple-teams-making-a-run-at-john-harbaugh/

Team Glazer go get JOHN Harbaugh!

And…”THIS GUY” is muaaa. Been around for a while, we all roll with different names and faces and places from time to time.

Harbaugh heading for the beaches hopefully! Bucs resurgence!!

  50. Realbucfan941 Says:

    D rome,

The Dungy comparison is not the same. He was never an NFL head coach and was not the bucs first choice. Do we keep playing the assistant guessing game or get a quality coach with NFL head coach experience and a SB ring? Plus his teams are as tough as they come. Plus no garauntee he’d come here if given multiple choices.

  51. Marques Says:

Absolutely not a Harbaugh. Not any Harbaugh. No Flacco either. Not now not ever.

  52. cmurda Says:

I would definitely be happy with John Harbaugh. Heck, I don’t even care what the compensation is. This dude has the Ravens headed to the playoffs with no offense. Imagine how good the Bucs would be with Harbaugh straightening out this defense. How anyone on ere could be against this move is beyond me. Unfortunately, I think it is all a pipe dream. No matter how much the Ravens organization has talked about getting rid of Harbaugh, I really don’t think they are that stupid.

tmaxcon- Tony Dungy wasn’t a quality Coach?

absoltulye not….. he was a 1 dimensional stubborn fool who wasted more hall of famers from 2 franchise than any coach in nfl history. dungy never won a damn thing in tampa in reality he set this team back and cost them at least 1 super bowl. last good decsion a glazer made was to show that bum the door.

  54. Aceofaerospace Says:

I think I’d prefer Jim Harbaugh to John. Like his energy more.

  55. FireMikeSmith_orDie Says:

The Ravens do not have nearly as much talent as the Bucs have, yet they took what they had and got way more out of it. On a team with more talent and given a fresh start, the Bucs WILL be a winning team because Harbaugh is a proven commodity. Get him a few “special” players and you never know, you could get to a Superbowl. Bellichick would still be a Superbowl winning coach without Brady, but he’d have less than half as many rings.

  56. IE Buc Says:

John Harbaugh for HC and Joe Cullen for DC would be a team I would take in a heartbeat. Harbaugh could keep Monken as OC, as long as he fixes the defense.

  57. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    @StoutGospel

Thanks for going to the trouble, Stout, but I was just playin

  58. Spicoli Magilla Says:

Just hire jack Del Rio. No compensation necessary. He had the Raiders 12-4 2 years ago then got sabotaged last year so Davis could bring in Chucky. Good head coach, move Monkin to OC as we have the best Bucs offense ever under his play calling. Let Del Rio tool up the D and lead. Even though he’s a 500 coach he had some bad teams with the Jags and nearly 200 games HC experience. I would give JDR a shot.

  59. Niko (the optimist) Says:

People, for starters, the person who said we can only trade for a good head coach, TROLL. Don’t give him attention. We all know fair well Leeman Bennett wasn’t traded for!

    Bazinga!

OK, the Bucs are not YEARS away from turning things around. And the offense sucks? Really? Bye. What the offense has done is faced some VERY GOOD defenses lately, playing at their best. And running the ball is the best defense, because your team cant do squat on the bench! Offensive Lineman should be the priority next season.
