“He’s Always Fought The Overconfidence”

Weighs in on Jameis

Not only is Bucs icon Ronde Barber a guy with an active, year-round insider pipeline to the happenings at One Buc Palace, he spent the last three weeks around Bucs officials calling games for FOX-TV.

That means time spent interviewing players and coaches and schmoozing with suits.

On Sunday’s broadcast, Barber shared some of his thoughts on America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, a man Barber had said must turn in a Year-4 season that was all about wins.

Barber said he now sees a 2018 version of Jameis that is more tame.

“I think he’s always fought the overconfidence,” Barber said of Jameis’ NFL career. “He’s a confident thrower, yes. And he’s got the talent to be. But sometimes he had some arm arrogance, as you want to say, trying to put balls in uncomfortable positions, and it’s hurt him. He’s been better at that of late.”

Joe’s going to guess that Barber’s take is not only what he’s assessed himself, but what he’s hearing at One Buc Palace.

Barber’s on-air chatter above turned into a setup for sideline reporter Sara Walsh, who said she talked to Jameis last week. Per Walsh, Jameis shared that getting benched for Ryan Fitzpatrick led to him having “gratitude about every play.”

Walsh also claimed Jameis said “there were times that he forgot this game is always bigger than the individual.”

No longer is Jameis trying to be a superhero, Walsh added.

Ronde took the ball from there and said he talked to Jameis on Friday. There, Barber said, Jameis explained that his transformation started after his shoulder injury last season. But Ronde said he believes Jameis got off track trying to match what Fitzpatrick accomplished early this season.

By far the worst tv guy in sports. Bucs franchise embarrasses football Buccaneer has beens just embarrass themselves with every analysis of anything…. 5 career playoff wins renders has beens and icons meaningless other than to the low standard bucfan living in in a failed past filled with post season failures.

  2. BigPoppaBuc Says:

    Barber for HC!

  3. Lamarcus Says:

I think all the players on the team has to coach up and train themselves.
On their spare time. Seems to me only a few players has improved. Who is those players? Idk. Seems like we plateaued. We need a new Coaching staff like Tomlin who knows how to develop players

  4. Mike Says:

Barber doesn’t want to be outshined by Winston so he puts him down and uses his media powers to keep him at bay- Pathetic

  5. BucsBandit Says:

Winston, and his poor play, will never run out of excuses…

    – Was trying to get up with Fitz

    – Humbled after being benched and new outlook

    – Changed man after shoulder injury

    – Learned tough lesson about life with off the field stuff

    – Finally realizes it’s not just about him

    WHAT-THE-EFF-EVER!!!!!!!!!!

Jameis Winston is the Dwight Howard of the NFL. Lots of talent and promise but always underachieves and itsbt a winner. Continues to convince the homers that “THIS YEAR WILL BE DIFFEENT!”

WHATEVS. Move on to another QB, Bucs.

  6. Fire Light Says:

Ronde Barber is a hack. Get him off of the Bucs games. I have never lost respect for a person like him and his brother. Ronde watches the whole game commenting on Jameis. He’s a certified Jameis Basher. Make him do any fox raiders games and keep him out of RayJay. Ronde is the worst analyst in the leage. Fire Licht! Can Koetter.

  7. Fire Light Says:

If Barber was coaching materiel, he’d Be a coach and give back the community hebcallsnhokenornlives in.!

  8. FortMyersDave Says:

I guess Ira has his work cut out for him to try to get his colleagues to give Lynch and Ronde the nod for gold jackets. Nice to see that Sara Walsh is reporting again. Local girl from Pasco had a rough go of it at BSPN; having a miscarriage while on set and then getting unceremoniously fired while one maternity in one of their purges where the Disney corp kept some below average talent and let go of some good sports people. The media industry is definately dog eat dog…….

  9. gilhealy Says:

Ronde wants Jameis to fail. Plain and simple. He follows the media narrative to a tee.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

@Sara Walsh … “Jameis shared that getting benched for Ryan Fitzpatrick led to him having “gratitude about every play.” I guess that’s Jameis’ way of saying that getting benched humbled him (which benchings often do?).

In my years of playing sports, have long believed that nothing humbles a winner like LOSING. And especially when YOU are one of the primary causes of a loss (that REALLY sucks). It’s more of an internal thing than an external thing (getting benched) though IMO . And it’s more than just ‘hating to lose’. It’s more about committing YOURSELF to doing something about it.

Might be wrong (just ask my wife and she’ll tell you I usually am), but I don’t think Jameis’ problem is ‘overconfidence’. Quite the opposite. I think he’s more of a ‘pleaser’ than he is ‘self-motivated’. Greats like Tom Brady, Drew Brees & Peyton Manning are all totally ‘self-motivated’ I’d surmise. They all make mistakes in the games (plenty of them), but they all know how to grow from those mistakes & correct them then & there. They don’t wait for their coaches to tell them what they screwed up (or for their coaches to bench them). They take charge, analyze what happened, fix it and move on.

I haven’t seen nearly enough of that in Jameis. Too many of the same mistakes over and over. Too much of trying to ‘please’ the coaches rather than taking ownership of his mistakes & fixing them. I could buy into that when he was a 20-year-old newbie QB. But not now that he’s got 4 years under his belt. LOTS of physical potential, but the head has to lead the arm, not vice-versa.

  11. D1 Says:

    Defense,

    Interesting points!
If you’re interested, watch the Jon Gruden QB Camp with JW. Specifically, how JW reacts to the interception reel. I’ve not seen any other profiled QB react like JW. His body language is insightful .

  12. Bucsfanman Says:

I see tmax is into the Jameson again!
After his rookie year, we all said “just wait”. His 2nd season came and went and we collectively said “2nd year QB just wait until year 3”! Year 3 we said, “OK, he’s still young but that 4th year, that 4th year should be special.”
So, here we are in the 4th year with cries still lingering about youth and age. I have but ONE question: WHAT are we waiting on?!

  13. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Jameis is a great QB. Ronde gets paid for his Jameis Bashing… ronde Barber still wants glennon

  14. Kobe Faker Says:

“Jameis doesnt know what is correct way or not nor what direction because …

At his development stage, JW has not had the correct coaching

Lets bring in a offensive QB coach to develop him. If he cant develop nor JW improves to anither scheme and approach we have our answer

    We all do know this…

Koetter has failed to develop the 10th pick and 1st qb pick

Both Blaine Gabbert and JW has not improved under very soon new head coach of WWE Jim McMahons teams

2018, all i see better from jameis is his athleticism and movement which he improved himself with his personal trainer

JW wants to be coahed hard…but must be correct coaching”

    Kobe Faker

  15. El Buco Realisto Says:

“Overconfidence” is a code word for not listening to coaching!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. NPRSageBoy Says:

Nice touchy, feely story. But, unless JayMiss can translate his revelation into Wins, who cares?

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

    My comments got hijacked!
In summation, we’re going to eventually run out of excuses for this guy. How long and for what are we waiting for?!

  18. VFL98 Says:

wow! That’s something every fan has been saying for years. Glad Ronde caught up with the majority of fans.

  19. Oneilbucs Says:

Man I will be glad when Jamies leave this trash fan base and this trash franchise. If they don’t bring him back the next young quarterback will lose here as well. This team needs a defense not a quarterback. And they need a running back.

  20. AlteredEgo Says:

Best 3rd round pick ever !

  21. Reach87 Says:

Best corner we ever had. Best QB we ever had. No amount of bashing by people with zero credibility or expertise will change that. Barber has, IMO been about as even handed as a paid analyst can be. Worst fans ever. Go Bucs!

  22. Reach87 Says:

PS: put wins all on this QB and you confirm, certify and co-sign my assessment above… you have not a clue on Football (team sport). Go Bucs!

  23. jjbucfan Says:

fanman- he is 25, Aaron Rodgers hadn’t even seen the field yet. Not saying Jameis is Rodgers, but I’m not saying he can’t develop into him either. Dirk Koetter has ruined Jameis with his sh*tty play calling and sh*tty O-Lines and Sh*tty defenses. Amazing how short peoples memories are. Let him get coached by someone else and see what he can be. This past Sunday, sitting in the stands watching the second half abortion, My kids were pointing out that while Jameis was already running for his life the WR’s were still running their routes and hadn’t even gotten into their breaks yet and he was being sacked or scrambling. the 4 vertical offense when you have no offensive line is just retarded, sorry.

  24. Reach87 Says:

Another PS: what are you “waiting “ for from your QB? Stats? He’s got em. Plenty of stat comparisons on this site. Wins? If you think the QB alone gets that for you (no more excuses, right? Bad defense, missed kicks, OL letdowns are just excuses, right?) you don’t get the game/team you are pretending to be a fan of. Alternative: go root for the Eagles. They won the SB last year, right? Alternatively you can recognize all of the issues with this team and root for them to improve. Go Bucs!

  25. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

I have noticed that everyone just ignores tmax and they don’t even respond anymore to that kind of stuff. Sorry it took me awhile to catch on, lol.

  26. Buc50 Says:

Huge Jameis supporter but Barber is not wrong. I don’t understand all the grief you guys are giving him. He may not be the best but he has a job. When your teams sucks like we do, you get the not so great guy. Win you games and we get the former Cowboys (only one of those guys is good and it’s not the HOFer)

  27. D1 Says:

    JJbucsfan,

    Vertical. …like 5yds? Or 10, 15yds…..define vertical

  28. Bucsfanman Says:

jjbuc- I think he will see another coach in a Bucs uniform and believe me, I hope that he can seize that opportunity. In short, we have had way more patience with him because he was the #1 pick. If not for that, he would’ve gotten his walking papers already.
I agree with you on the system and play-calling, it didn’t do him any favors. BUT, this is year #4, and he’s been playing in the same offense. The progression should be noticeable. Just my opinion, anyways.

  29. 813bucboi Says:

    realist

last time he didnt listen to coaching, he won the final game of the year….

the lack of coaching by dirk and his staff has killed this team….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  30. passthebuc Says:

Barber calls a spade a spade and tampa bay fans do not like it. grow up

  31. Joe Blahak Says:

Yeah, he’s not throwing interceptions but hanging on to the ball even longer than before. He sucks and will never be a top end QB. He’s not accurate either. Balls sailing over everyone’s head most of the time. Doesn’t have the top flight QB makeup. CAREER BACKUP!!!
