Defense Nearing History

December 5th, 2018

Sackmeisters.

At the end of September, if a Bucs fan would have asked Joe when the Bucs would get four more sacks, Joe likely would have said through the whole month of October.

Yet the Bucs’ defense on the cusp of team history. The good kind of history.

In the past three games, the Bucs have had at least four sacks. If somehow the Bucs can put Drew Brees on his backside four times, that will tie a franchise record for most consecutive games with at least four sacks.

This has happened only once before, and that was the year after Warren Sapp left, in 2004. Late in the season, bookmarked by games against the Dixie Chicks, the Bucs racked up at least four sacks in four straight games.

Damn, since defrocked Mike Smith was jettisoned, both new defensive coordinator Mark Duffner and defensive line coach Brentson Buckner are doing a helluva job in making a case for the powers that be at One Buc Palace to bring them back next season.

Imagine this defensive scheme taught all off-season and TC with healthy players.

Maybe add a LB & DB to the mix.

    addition by subtraction….lol…..

smitty must have been teaching the defense in German….lol….

This is a stat that will always be moving upwards esp with the new type of league that has evolved the NFL is a non contact offensive throwing the ball around the yard league so of course sacks will go up. Think about it one of the bucs drives consisted of 75 yards of PI pentalties that one was poor throw by jameis and worse call by the official, im sure defensive holding and PI calls are up as well although the nfl will not give that stat out

I’m not impressed. Not enough to want Duffner back as DC. At least, not yet. He can still earn my respect though if the defense shines the rest of the year.

But the last two games have not been against stellar opponents. The next one is. We’ll get to see this week if they really have improved.

No denying that the trade for JPP has paid off though. I just hope he doesn’t hold out for more money after the season.

It would have been nice to have Kwon, David and Beckwith on the field at the same time this year though.

And I wish Davis and Stewart were more healthy. The more experience they get now, the better they will be next year.

if your not impressed with duff than you should be disappointed in dirk for keeping smitty for so long……

are you suggesting smitty couldve done better?

I wish MJ Stewart and Carlton Davis weren’t banged up so much. Those guys were both known for playing closer to the line in college. Then we put them in Smitty’s Tampa 2 zone 15-yard cushion. Now we’re playing closer to the line and the secondary is much better. People already wanna kick MJ to the curb even though he’s been banged up most the year just like they wanted to do Vea. He’s strong and can lay the boom. He could possibly be a good nickel back or safety playing more man coverage.

If the Bucs try to make another cornerback a safety, they need to bring in a former player that did that successfully in their career.

Once again, one of Koetter’s very looong list of positioning players where they shouldn’t be with Ryan Smith at safety. Nickel CB is easier to convert to safety than a 6’3″ CB Ryan Smith. I just think Stewart is a bit stout and doesn’t have the foot work for nickel. He’s a downhill smack daddy like Whitehead so I’d like to see him try out for the #2 spot. Could be a nice rotation.

  12. SchwiftyBuc Says:

If Smith were the DC right now, they’d still be on pace to be the worst Defense in NFL history.

Funny what kind of pressure the front 7 can generate when some idiot isn’t demanding the D-lineman to 2 gap isn’t it?

  13. BigMacAttack Says:

Putting Brees on the ground 4times? Yeah, good luck with that. Just get the win

You help keep a positive vibe, Joe.
Two weeks ago I wanted to drag Dirk behind me motercycle.
Now I’m leaning behind giving him ONE more chance.
If he wins Sunday I’ll let him drive my motorcycle.
Yeah, I know, beating the aints is a tall order.
I think we can do it.
    I have hope again.

  15. Fred W Mcneil Says:

Even if we lose, as long as drew goes home with a sore butt … I’ll be satisfied.

  16. Howard Cosell Says:

The Bressus is mighty and knoweth all things

….so yes tall order indeed. Go Bucs!
