Not Missing DJax

December 3rd, 2018

Breaks down TD catch.

Chris Godwin is Exhibit-A why DeSean Jackson is expendable on this Bucs roster.

Godwin, as Joe types this post, is easily the No. 2 receiver on the team and he has no chemistry issues with Jameis. In fact, he loves it when Jameis has the ball and is scrambling for more time.

With 20 seconds left before halftime and the Bucs holding the ball on the Stinking Panthers-13, Jameis was flushed from his shotgun formation and floated right. He found Godwin in the back of the end zone to give the Bucs a 17-7 halftime lead.

Godwin make a nice catch with the ball jumping for it and making sure he got his feet down but Godwin claimed that play was all Jameis.

“Jameis does a great job scrambling and extending the play and giving us opportunities to make plays on the ball,” Godwin said. “Just recognizing that situation, I was just trying to find an open spot. Jameis always has his eyes upfield. He gave me an opportunity and it was up to me to make the play.”

Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking, Ozark-watching, yams-eating coach Dirk Koetter believed after the game that touchdown pass was Jameis’ best throw of the day before he changed his mind after watching the film and called it “second best.”

“That was actually [Jameis’] fourth option on that play, and he scrambled up and found [Godwin].

Throw in the fact Jameis led the Bucs in rushing with 48 yards — not an ideal goal for an offense, it’s safe to say yesterday may have been Jameis’ best game in a long while.

Dirk “We were done before Halloween” Koetter makes more sense and has a better ring to it

  2. AlteredEgo Says:

Still…it is too bad Jameis can’t hit DJax…DJax is an awesome offensive weapon and Jameis can’t take advantage

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Licht has had some misses…..but Godwin isn’t one….he was worth a 2nd round pick (at least)……he and OJ Howard are studs of the future.

  4. Wombat Says:

I think the Glazers will make THEIR decision after the season. This team is playing well on offense despite all that has happened this year. Continuity takes time. I am not a huge fan of Koetter, but I think he needs to stay on for at least one more year.
Guys like Godwin, Brate, Humphries can all do great under this offense. I can remember games when we had receivers running in to each other in the past.
If he can turn Jameis into a smart QB, that will be a miracle. I want to see Jameis play the season out to see if he can continue mistake free football…..

  5. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Bye bye DJax. Another Jason Licht disaster signing. FIREEE LICHT!

  6. Fartman Says:

I’m back on board! Jameis all da way. just quit gropin’ and throwing pics and we’ll be fine.

  7. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Wombat. Koetters offense is terrible for Jameis. Hence all the INTs and poor play from Jameis. Monken is the man calling the shots now and is calling plays that go to jameis’ strengths. Koetter loves DJax because both of them are in love with the deep ball. Jameis can throw a deep ball, but it’s not his strength. DJax and Jameis can’t connect because they don’t match…

  8. BUC IT Says:

Djax has whined all year and has quit on the team. Trade him or cut him. Godwin should be #2 for the rest of the year. And re-sign Humphries! Bucs take the top seed in NFC from saints this week! Dallas showed the recipe.

  9. westernbuc Says:

Stupid Buc fans spending a victory Monday demanding the head coach and GM be fired. You losers don’t deserve victory

  10. Chuckstutz Says:

“Nice catch” is the understatement of the day. I thought jamis was throwing it away. Must have been 100 mph!! One hell of a catch. Hats off to mr godwin.

  11. Wombat Says:

J Almighty, you realize Monken is calling Koetter’s playbook? Jameis is the problem with Jameis, don’t blame Koetter on that. Let’s let the year play out with Jameis. I hope he proves me wrong and has become disciplined!

  12. Pete Mitchell Says:

Can we please stop getting rid of good football players.

How about we find a way to manage these personalities and get the most out of all the talent we have.

  13. Kobe Faker Says:

“Should be calling more slants and crossing patterns to Godwinb but

Klueless is Klueless to short highly probable passing game

Kobe has stated 2 years ago the offense will run thru Godwin and OJ ”

  14. Pete Mitchell Says:

We all say we’re tired of the losing we’ve endured for more than a decade now, yet we are all so quick to run coaches/gm’s/players out of here.

Can we please just stick it out with the guys we have and let them grow.

We have a GM who has never been an NFL GM before this job

We have a hea coach who has never been an NFL HC before this job

We have a quarterback who has never been an NFL quarterback before this job

These guys have all learned a ton about what it takes to do their job at the highest level (the NFL) in one of the toughest divisions in football over the past four/five years. Can we please stay the course and allow them to apply all those lessons here over the next four to five years instead of somewhere else.

  15. Warthog Says:

    Pete Mitchell is 100% correct.

Perennially successful franchises don’t run off their HC/GM after such a short time at the helm.

The Glazers hired a rookie GM and rookie HC. They should be given an opportunity to develop.

If you pin the bad stuff on Koetter then you also need to give him credit for putting together the best offense in franchise history. All he needs to do is get consistent average play from the defense and he has built a winner that will be in playoff contention. It’s a no-brainer to give him more time to get better on D.

The Bucs, right now, have more pieces in place to make a superbowl run than anytime in the past 15 years. We are a decent DC away.

It would be madness and stupidity for the Glazers to clean house now, when they have a chance to build a dynasty.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

One injury away from having to start Adam Humphries – and while a great #4 WR, he’s a terrible terrible starter that can not get open against starting NFL corners.

That would be a disaster, and it’s why D-Jax is important.

  17. Season Is Over Says:

Do Buc fans have selective memory? A few no pressure wins after elimination is not going to make everyone forget the past four years. The Bucs failed miserably once again when anything mattered. Koetter refused to fire Smith and made the Buc fans watch this terrible defense for years. No one is giving me my time I wasted supporting them back. Why should Koetter be rewarded? Any offensive-minded coach could make a decent offense with the weapons this team has. Koetter said firing Smith would make no difference. Remember?

  18. AlteredEgo Says:

Munch … I saw the rookie from Penn in for at least one play..I agree about the value of DJAX… he is an awesome proven weapon and it’s not his fault

  19. Tony LA Says:

    Joe,

You HAVE to factor in how much Djax stretches the field. It is not just about stats. The Bucs looked less explosive yesterday than they have in awhile – only one play over 20 yards and that was against a Panthers pass defense that is bottom ten in the league.

It isn’t just a coincidence that the Bucs have their least amount of big plays all year the game that Djax misses. He’s valuable as a decoy in 3/4 WR sets and opens up pssing lanes so teams can’t double Evans every play.

  20. wombat Says:

Warthog, you are showing your age. This is not how a millinial thinks, just unplug, and reboot… that’s all you need to do to fix it… we need instant gratification, SB all bust!!

  21. gilhealy Says:

I think we’ll see Watson a bit more thru the season. At least I hope so. He, Evans, O.J., Godwin and Hump are the guys for a while. Kid’s got great hands, and speed to burn. He’ll make an impact.

  22. ATrain Says:

Wait a minute how is DJax a disaster

Because our QB can’t throw to him it’s his fault

Then he is too much of a competitor so he gets mad the all star QB can’t throw to him

    And HE is the Problem

Oh that’s right this is the Fan Base of help them up and talk nice
Give the 1st pick 5 yrs

    Y’all kill me
Beat up these players who work and get mad

JOE you are just as bad.

  24. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

We need Jamies to complete some deep passes to djax

  25. Reach87 Says:

If I were th GM I would ask what is broken with my WRs? I would not factor in the fan “vote” cause the majority of negative posters on this site have no clue. I have heard the head coach, unsolicited (without being asked) that Jackson has been a great team mate. I have seen him be a team captain this year. I have seen him take the top off the defense. Agee with Rod. Why get rid of him? The only reason right now is that some “fans” don’t sit in the meeting rooms, don’t watch him practice, forget those long balls he caught this year, don’t think speed and veteran leadership is important, and/or hate anyone who makes more money than them. Go Bucs!

  26. Season Is Over Says:

Why get rid of him? Maybe the fact that he said he doesn’t want to be here on social media for the whole world to see. The trade rumor? Lmao. Why hold onto him out of pure greed should be the question you should ask. He is not going to make the team better at this point as you have a QB that is unable to hit a receiver without a twenty foot wingspan on the run. Jackson can’t help that he was fooled. Jackson still being on this team is one of biggest reasons why the Bucs have resided in the gutter for ten years. No accountability. Now you have locker room full of players that just saw what Jackson got away with. Maybe they should reward him. That seems like something the Bucs would do.

  27. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Season is Over- The past 4 years? Are we blaming Dirk for Lovies’ last year now?
I think Buc Fans DO have selective memory and what do ya know, you are a Buc Fan!
Did you forget we were 9-7 Dirks first year? That was with Evans, Hump, Brate, Shorts, Martino, Shep.
So he has won without “all these weapons”.

I don’t think Dirk will be here next year but I am not going to be super pissed if he is. He has shown he is a good offensive coach, what we need now is a good defensive coach and a more capable staff.

Also, “no pressure games”? Are you in the locker room? What is that even based on?
These players know that if they keep losing their coach is gone, their GM is gone, and anyone with any ties to any player is gone. The NFL is a fickle business, you could be the hot thing one day then the next nobody wants you.
So if these players want jobs next year, they need to keep playing hard and keep winning or there are no guarantees. THAT is pressure.

  28. Season Is Over Says:

9-7? Was that the season we started the season 3-5 and were done by Halloween? I am losing track of the historical losing.

  29. Jean Lafitte Says:

It was a throw to a standing Godwin who leaped 3ft off the ground from that high cannon shot with an unbelievable great catch and I will never ever question the velocity on Jameis’s arm strength again. wow and Godwin stuck the landing.

  30. orlbucfan Says:

Godwin ain’t called ungodly for nuthin’. Line him up on the other side of ME13. Now, we’re talkin’! Desean Jackson? Who dat?!

  31. Joe Says:

    This site should be JoeWinstonGMCfan.com

No shame or embarrassment in wanting to keep good players.

  32. Knack2Babbyyyy Says:

That’s my WR2! This offense has so many great young players who aren’t even close to hitting their prime yet. With even a middle of the pack defense next year, this could be an extremely dangerous team.

  33. Joe Says:

Then he is too much of a competitor so he gets mad the all star QB can’t throw to him

    And HE is the Problem

Name another receiver Jameis has issues with.

  34. Joe Says:

Munch … I saw the rookie from Penn in for at least one play..I agree about the value of DJAX… he is an awesome proven weapon and it’s not his fault

Why he’s so proven one team dumped him because he wasn’t a team guy, a second team dumped him for reasons not clear and on his third team, he wants to take his ball and go home whining all the way. Real team leader.

  35. ATrain Says:

    Hey Joe

I will tell you a QB who could hit him

    This is a Team Game

Or is this a Fantasy Football Site

DJax made some awesome plays when the QB could hit him

But like I’ve said before makesure that lockerroom stays open to JOE don’t make any negative comments about the golden Two

  36. ATrain Says:

Oh and didn’t the Eagles scream to get DJax back Joe?
Yes if you play for multiple teams you can’t be good

    Really ????

I can think of several WR who were trade several times
    One went in the HOF
One just got resigned this year in his 30s

Wow. I bet Joe got an invite toGMCs dinner

  37. JimmyJack Says:

Maybe Djax is just overrated. He’s in a #1 offense so the problem aren’t the team. If he can’t performce with a top offense at his disposal he got no one to blame but himself.

Thinking back he was probably aided on his prior teams because they had Scarry running attacks which took coverage off of Jackson.

Yesterday when Evans was shut down we had a true #2 step up and carry the load. Jackson would not have been able to do what Godwin did yesterday. That tells me all I need to know.

  38. Buc believer Says:

@Altered ego…. you say”still too bad Jameis can’t hit Desean… it’s the other way around. To bad Desean can’t catch a pass from Jameis! That whiny little BE…atch MEsean doesn’t even try!

  39. JimmyJack Says:

Mike Evans was having a tough time catching Winston’s fastball in Winston’s rookie year……..What he did was join Jamies to practice during the off-season and worked his tail off to improve himself.

Meanwhile Jackson had obvisous chemistry issues and he spent his off-season alone in California doing his own thang.

This doesn’t sound like a guy that cares about winning to me and it don’t sound like somebody who cares much for his teammates.

  40. AlteredEgo Says:

Lol…. DJax will be back and spray his critics to mark their idiocy

  41. donuts Says:

I like the NEW JW v the old. If the new guy sticks around and can win 3 of last 4 then I see 5th year options or more chances to prove himself in 2019. If he is here in 2019, we need to move on from Bajakian. Winston footwork is so bad at times that it shows Bajakian cant fix it after 3 years. This alone is a good reason.

3 of 4 then keep Winston and Koetter/Duffner combo; purge Licht and Bajakian. This is a good formula for this franchise.

  42. donuts Says:

Godwin is better than DJAX in this offense. I think the DJAX issues go deeper than just the players (winston to djax) but the scheme too. I also think that DJAX and father time are battling. He has not had a big season in some time. (no more than 4 TDs per season since 2014) His punt return excitement was almost a decade ago. Some guys just dont fit into a team and this is one of those situations.

    ———–

The rationalization shown here is downright alarming. Are you suggesting that Jackson is not a proven top WR? I don’t care about his issues or who dumped him. This is about Winston not being able to get him the ball. Jackson is one of the premier WRs in the league at the long ball. I’m willing to bet you wrote five to ten articles on how awesome Jackson was before and while he was here. Now, because Winston can’t get him the ball, he is unproven? The only thing Jackson did wrong was publicly state that he didn’t want to be here. Just look at the list of excuses written as to why we needed Jackson. Who has Winston been able to consistently throw deep? I am not talking about the jump ball, closed-eye deep prayers like Winston normally throws. And don’t rattle off about one pass to Godwin. This website tries to create heroes out of players that make normal everyday plays.

I will insult the WR who was brought in to complete the weapons for Winston offense I screamed for. Joebuc logic. Just imagine having to actually believe delusions like that. I’m sure the rest of the league is going to blame Jackson for not being able to get the deep ball. Lmao. Just wow.

  44. SOEbuc Says:

When I heard the Bucs were looking at Godwin before the draft I looked at his college film and was like “damn.” Everyone was saying he was a mid second round pick. When we didn’t pick him up in the second I was like “damn.”Got him mid third and was like “f#ck yeah! that’s who I wanted!” Proven that I know how to scout em.

  45. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I would argue Jackson is NOT a top WR and definitely not a #1. If he was ever a number one ( he wasn’t), it was a long time ago. He is still a deep threat, yea but that is his one thing he does. That’s all.

  46. JimmyJack Says:

Season is over since Jackson has got here he has been out played by two UDFAs and a rookie. You are calling him a proven top receiver and he is the 6th best option in the #1 passing offense.

In a Tampa Bay uniform he has proven to be nothing but a scrub. The tape don’t lie bro.

Proven Top receiver? That statement was proven false sixteen straight weeks last season and all of this year.

  47. JimmyJack Says:

Watson and Bobo Wilson would outshine Djax too if they were given the opportunity. I guarantee it.

Instead of cutting Bernard Reedy we should have dumped Djax. That would have been a solid football move.

  48. Joe Says:

Oh and didn’t the Eagles scream to get DJax back Joe?

How come they didn’t pony up to sign him a year ago???

  49. Shane Says:

Godwin is a better WR than DJax.

  50. ATrain Says:

Why didn’t the Bucs pony up and pay Bennett

    Oh because teams make mistakes

That’s ok DJax is on the way out because the Bucs have given Joe the right to slam him

  51. Jimbo Says:

Licht can add his failure to trade the malignant DJax before the deadline to his “F” resumé. It is inconceivable that eiither he or Koetter will be here in two months. There was never a more inept duo than that Frito munching, Smores inhaling, razor averting pair.
