Yes, the Bucs’ defensive revival could be attributed to caviar and Maine lobster, among other reasons.
Seriously.
The Bucs are coughing up an average of 20 points per game over their last four outings.
Hey, subtract the Ryan Fitzpatrick pick-6 against the Giants, and things are looking incredibly good for The Tampa Bay defense in the third quarter of this season, which just ended with today’s 24-17 disposal of the Panthers.
Four weeks ago, after the Panthers buried the Bucs, Gerald McCoy talked about how it might be time for the entire defense to have a dinner together because they hadn’t gotten around to that yet in 2018. Frankly, Joe was ready to vomit; it seemed like silly talk.
Well, after the win today, Joe asked nickel cornerback Javien Elliott about that dinner — whether it ever happened and what impact it might have had.
Elliott revealed that not only did the entire defense go to dinner at Eddie Vs in Tampa following previous Panthers game — before holding the Redskins to 16 points — the defense did it a second time at Ruth’s Chris Steak House.
“Building that whole brotherhood as a defense is a big thing,” Elliott said. “That environment where you really lean and know and trust in each other, it makes a difference. Just coming together having fun, then bringing that to work and to the practice field, it was a good thing for us.”
After talking to Elliott, Joe asked McCoy about whether it was just a couple of expensive dinners or something more for the defense.
McCoy acknowledged that he paid the giant dinner tab and thanked Team Glazer for paying him generously so he could afford it. Players got to order whatever they wanted, as McCoy flexed some leadership muscles.
“I’ve been doing this for a while, so sometimes a vet has to be a vet and make vet decisions,” McCoy said with a smirk. “It may or may not be working. You know, I don’t know. I think it’s just dinner. Take what you want from that.”
“When you play the game to make sure the man next to you is successful, that’s when the team has success,” McCoy also said.
Joe asked a couple other defensive players about the all-defense dining, and they seemed to think it was valuable time — more than just a meal.
Perhaps it was.

Why not? Bonding in sports is important for success. If the players feel it brings them closer together and where they are playing for each other maybe they should do it more often.

GMC should probably get credit for two picks today when he hit Cams plant leg and messed up the throw. Was he clowning around then? Ronde called him out in a good way more than once…or maybe he was calling him a clown.
He already has six sacks this year…perhaps that’s just him clowning around.
I’m not sure what makes some of you get so personal with ad hom attacks. I’m not sure what GMC has ever done to some folks here…because he wasn’t Warren Sapp?
He was selected right behind Suh and simply google and check their career numbers..they are comparable! I wonder if Suh gets as much vitriol from the three cities where he played? Nah because he kicks guys when they’re down…the mark of a “real’ man and a great player. Wonder why Suh is on his third team already….great player eh.

Gerald…..Did you see what JPP did after Hump dropped the game away? He did what makes a player elite……….But Gerald, JPP can not be expected to do that every week. He needs he teammates to help carry the load.

I get when you don’t like a player. I get it. But part of being an adult is giving respect where respect is due. Whether you like a guy or not, he is a player on YOUR TEAM.
The first 2 posers either didn’t watch the game or are still in underoos.

@sandwichman – The dinner is significant and symbolizes an action by the entire defense to invest more into each other. It’s potentially a major turning point, and we should be appreciative of the top shelf coverage we have come to know with JNF 👍

An unmentioned (at least to me) factor is the absence of a middle linebacker that is trying to make every play himself. I love what Kwon does as far as being a vocal leader but he a LVD do not work well together. If Beckwith was for sure healthy, I’m pretty sure Kwon doesn’t come back. He is a hard decision.

All the guys on here that bash McCoy are like little kids that need someone to pick on to make them feel important. The guy has played for our losing team his entire career trying to make a difference. You guys just don’t get it. He’s done the best he can and management knows it. That’s why he gets paid.

I’m really surprised at some folks around here that think just because these guys are professionals, all they have to do is show up and they play as one strong unit. Nah, it don’t work like that. They have to come together and gel as a unit so they are confident in each other. If that means going to dinner together, then so be it. Hell, i’m not going to complain based on what I’ve been seeing so far.

Harsh! Geez, guys! The d-line looks to be finally jelling and people are picking apart GMC because he didn’t make the stat sheet?!
ATrain- I will acquiesce that GMC has not played as we expected. That said, the d-line put a LOT of pressure on Cam yesterday and “money-bags” was one of the players applying it.
LOT of contributions from a LOT of different players….finally!

Not for nothing, but it seems to me like since the rook has gotten healthier, the d-line play has been better. Just an observation.
