Pierre-Paul On Bucs Fans: “I’d Be Pissed Off, Too”

Talk to Jason Pierre-Paul and he’ll be quick to tell you that he came to the party very late as far as being a football fan.
Football wasn’t part of his life as a young kid.
He was a basketball guy and soccer was the sport of his Haitian-immigrant parents in South Florida.
Things changed when he switched to football late in high school.
But JPP has come to understand NFL fans as he nears the end of his ninth season as a professional.
Via the Buccaneers locker room video below, JPP talked yesterday about a thin crowd at the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway last Sunday and how important he believes strong attendance is for the home team’s on-field success.
JPP said he gets the light crowds in Tampa because of all the losing.
“You gotta understand the fans, too. You know, they tired of losing. If I look at it from a fan point of view, too, I’d be pissed off, too, if I think I could contribute to the game better than the players,” JPP said.

awe shucks bucs fans are happy they are still celebrating dungy the clowns 2-6 playoff record and celebrating 5 career playoff wins in 42 years. this is a great year, another basement title and a chance at 6 wins. jpp will get used to it. cancer93 will enlighten him to the ways of dancing while losing and the fastest way to the bank….

If Tampa Bay was a stock, I would have sold it by now and never ever looked back. Thank God its just football, or is it? Some would argue it is more than just a game. None-the-less, Sunday I missed my 1st Bucs’ game in over 20 + years (I am 43). As of last week, I decided not to continue watching bad football for 3 hours each Sunday. I have decided that until the Bucs prove to me they want to win, or the Bucs make smarter moves as an organization, I am out. This is a sad place for me but I have had enough. I never thought I could be this beaten down about the Bucs. I have proven to be a loyal fan, and have never loved another NFL team. Now though, I feel the organization as a whole has forsakin not just me, but all its fans. We do not matter to them! I do not owe them my faithfulness and loyalty any longer. The organization has made it all worth nothing.

@ Duke, I pulled the plug at the end of 16 season. Sitting in the stands watching that crap while leaving my wife and newborn home was just not worth it. I would get home and the first thing she would say, you knew that they were going to lose anyway.

The biggest issue, I think, even more so than losing, are the ticket prices and the domino effect that has. Back in the 90s for $20 you could get two tickets – which was cheap enough to go to the game with a brown bag on your head. But now those tickets would cost you about $140 for a pair and they’d probably confiscate the brown bag and arrest you as being a possible terrorist.
I went to games in the 80s and 90s at the old stadium and while the teams almost always stunk (1997 being the only exception – and I had season tickets so it was awesome) there was still a fun vibe at the place, you could always expect some drunk chick to go topless, you could throw stuff at opposing fans to entertain yourself and because tickets cost so much less – even when adjusted for inflation – you had a much younger crowd that was more lively, at least when the team was awful.
Anyways a lot of the fun of going to games has been replaced. The tickets are so expensive that you really limit who can afford to go the game, in particular when the team isn’t winning, and the fact there are cameras everywhere means chicks are lot less likely to get drunk and topless, plus you have this entire generation of words hurt cupcakes who think it’s a hate crime to talk trash. It’s amazing how many times I had to explain to Packers fans why they were called the Packers, and now that would probably get you kicked out of the stadium.
