Jim Schwartz “Best Fit” To Replace Dirk Koetter

November 27th, 2018

Dirk Koetter remaining head coach of the Buccaneers in January is about as likely as Joe not drinking a beer while enjoying an afternoon of college football at Abe’s Place.

Maybe Koetter has a 10 percent chance as of today. (Hey, Joe gets in a vodka mood once in a while).

Joe’s not rooting against Koetter, but Koetter is going to have to win three of the next four games to even get Team Glazer’s attention, Joe believes. That would give the Bucs some NFL-shocking victories and a 7-8 record.

More likely, Team Glazer already is in full coach-hunting mode and preparing to pounce when the dismissal bell rings on the this season.

Joe already has written about John Harbaugh, Bruce Arians and John DeFilippo, and today Bleacher Report was pairing Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and the Buccaneers.

The former Lions head coach and Bills defensive coordinator has a tough-guy reputation and a new Super Bowl ring that would command a lot of attention in the Tampa Bay locker room.

In a year dominated by offensive coaches, Jim Schwartz is the best true defensive candidate on the board.

Schwartz, now with the Philadelphia Eagles, was the head coach of the Detroit Lions between 2009 and 2013, but many in the league feel he didn’t get a fair shake there. Said one top-level front office member, “I think you can look at the lack of success after [Schwartz] there and realize a lot of the issues weren’t his.”

After strong stints with the Bills (2014) and the Eagles, Schwartz is once again a viable candidate. And at only 52 years old, he’s still considered young enough to have the energy for a rebuilding process. That’s actually one thing potential employers like about him. “If you want a tough SOB to come in and run out the weakness on your roster, he’s the guy to do it,” said one former general manager who now helps consult with owners for new hires.

Schwartz will have to prove that his time in Detroit isn’t representative of his abilities, but in a year without a go-to candidate with a strong defensive background, he could benefit from being the most likely option.

Joe pleaded on these pages for Dirk Koetter to hire Schwartz as defensive coordinator back in 2016. So Joe is a big Schwartz fan.

His time with Detroit was marked by big highs and lows, but he did take over a winless team and had them in the 2011 playoffs with a young quarterback in his third season.

One thing Team Glazer could be sure of. This Bucs defense would improve in a hurry under Schwartz.

    Please God, no.

  2. Not there yet Says:

    To be honest I would be completely on board with this. He could literally keep monken and this offense running in the same offense almost while getting this defense up to speed. That would be the quickest way to be competitive in this transition period.

  3. miken Says:

    Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse in Tampa

  4. T REX Says:

    Wait – I heard that the offense is what contributes to Winston turnovers…which is it?

    The offense is greta when he doesn’t turn it over but it’s at fault when he does. Or the defense’s fault.

    HILARIOUS!

  5. DBS Says:

    And how would they improve? #WeaponsforSchwartz? We heard the same about the Dline this year with Buck and it has been good against bad teams. Where are the magical players going to come from?

  6. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

    Eh..good coordinator not so sure about HC. Between the two I think I’d rather just keep Koetter with the mandate that he hire a successful DC with previous HC experience…preferably at the NFL level. That way if year four goes South the Bucs can fire Dirk in season and insert the DC as the interim HC. I don’t think Dirk has lost the team, so I hope the Glaxers don’t succumb to knee jerk fan over reactions (look how well that’s worked out for the team!)

  7. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

    Not my favorite fella or first choice…although he has proven his defensive chops and took the Lions to the playoffs ( I believe )…could do worse…is underwhelming at best.

  8. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

    And yes I am fully aware that Smitty was just that…hire a different DC lol

  9. cmurda Says:

    I vote yes to proposition Schwartz. I voted yes to him as our defensive coordinator but Licht screwed the pooch there and nabbed the highly touted Mike Smith who has never coordinated a decent defense in his life. Anyway, I digress.

  10. stpetebucsfan Says:

    I must have missed the news. Did Schwartz have to deal with starting a season when Matthew Stafford was suspended for three games to start the season? I don’t think so.

    Why does he get excuses but Koetter who has the most legitimate excuse of any head coach in the past decade just gets criticized.

    And so if Koetter gets dumped but Jameis the jerk who started all of this is retained I’m going to have a really bad taste in my mouth. Gonna be hard for me to get on board with JW.

    Now if the Glazers look at the entire picture and tell Koetter…we like you…your offense is great but we’re demanding you bring in Schwartz for DC and JW stays for at least one more year…I can accept that.

    I get that it’s business and how the league works…but it’s just tough swallowing that a moron could behave like JW and keep getting excuse after excuse after excuse but the guy whose job he was responsible for deep sixing gets canned. Just doesn’t seem fair.

    I neither hate nor love JW or Koetter. But for the sake of continuity if the Bucs decided to keep them both I could handle that for one more year. For the sake of fairness there is no other solution. Either dump them both or keep them both.

  11. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

    Yawn. He had his chance and was a nothing-special HC. His Eagles’ defense isn’t doing much this year anyway. There are better, more exciting options elsewhere.

  12. Dave Says:

    Keep Dirk.

    Get a good defensive coordinator.

  13. BigOne Says:

    No

  14. Cobraboy Says:

    Just bring in an Asst. Head Coach-Defense and clean house there.

    There is not much really wrong with the offense that some serious ball protection wouldn’t cure. Well, maybe a RG.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Jim Schwartz has a 29-51 record as a head coach. Are you kidding me?

  16. calbucsfan Says:

    No way, keep Koetter.

  17. BucEmUp Says:

    Pass, id keep Koetter over that guy. PROMOTE Monken and Buckner and get Bruce Arians over here to oversee everything and reunite with Licht and Buckner

  18. buccanator Says:

    Not there yet is right. And I think Schwartz is one of those “if I ever get a second chance I’m gonna damn sure get it right next time” kind of guys. I’d like to see him in some pewter pants.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    If they fire Koetter, I would rather go with one of my suggestions. Click my name to see them.

  20. Ed Kerber Says:

    NO NO NO…. Joe this is as bad as drafting Johnny Manziel!

  21. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    I agree.

  22. calbucsfan Says:

    10% chance as of today Joe(s)? I will take you up on that and put my money on the 90% side that Koetter stays and will buy you a couple of Kettle One’s on the rocks next time I’m in town…..if you are right!

  23. Ed Says:

    An excellent defensive coordinator doesn’t make a great head coach, there are certainly better candidates that will come out of the playoffs and Super Bowl. Bucs would be be well served to speak with as many candidates as possible as it’s too early to put your sights on one person.

    Schwartz has the right demeanor for a defensive coach but the HC has to be the CEO of Sunday’s product on field, all aspects, I would prefer someone that can organize all the different phases of the game. Schwartz can do that with the defense but the Bucs have so many deficiencies that the HC has to be more well rounded and able to run an entire program that is in disarray, I’m not convinced he is versatile enough and enthusiastic enough to run the show.

  24. JabooBuc Says:

    Keep Dirk and put everything into this defense. Dirk is not the problem. This team needs some talent infusion on that side of the ball.

  25. Mike C Says:

    EFFFFF no.. for all that, i would rather keep Koetter… Either get a PROVEN retread- Arians/Harbaugh or Keep Dirk and clean house and get a beyond proven DC… maybe off a team that blows out their coaches at the end of the season.

    Only Defensive guy i can see getting any love from me is Fangio from the Bears.. only with the proposition that he keep Monken and the offense. But we see how that arraignment is working in Detroit, which is in a similar situation to here in the grand scheme of things.

  26. Burton21 Says:

    Don’t hire Gym Shorts. Please no!!!!

  27. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

    Keep dirk. Get a good defensive coordinator

  28. AlteredEgo Says:

    Koetter is doing fine with the hand he is been given….last thing this franchise needs is a front office turnover in 2019….after that maybe….the players have not quit on Keotter….and we have seen that with every other coach going back to Gruden….

  29. BrianBucs Says:

    I wanted the Bucs to hire Schwartz when they hired Koetter. But Jason Licht went with the guy he thought could make his Chosen One Winston look good. 2 big mistakes by Licht

  30. BigMacAttack Says:

    I like Schwartz and what he brings to the table, but it’s hard to be a successful head coach when your GM sucks. The Bucs’ GM sucks, and that’s about as nice as I can say it. Licht is incompetent and Koetter could probably win with better players. Licht has set the team way back. The problem here is that if you don’t hire a defensive head coach, you won’t find a good defensive coordinator. The good ones have good jobs and there aren’t enough good players on this defense to attract a good DC. It’s a dead end job until you have a few successful drafts by a new GM. This team is a mess and the win last week was no big accomplishment. Not even close.

  31. BigMacAttack Says:

    Mistakes and Licht are synonymous in every way.

  32. Todd Says:

    Yeah, no.

  33. Mike Johnson Says:

    Joe ..had Koetter hired Schwartz as DC from Jump, He’d be a pretty decent situation here now. But his alligence to his road-dog pressbox Smitty doomed him. FIRE KOETTER. He’s an average coach. he’ll take you to a 9-7 or a few 8-8 seasons. But you ain’t goin to the top with him. Bring in some fresh blood from top to bottom. Wipe her Clean!! Not sure I’d go with Swartz now as a HC. problems or not, he looked terrible with them Lions. But I do know..Koetter is not the answer. He will do good as an OC. But he just don’t cut the..HC Mustard! I’d hite Monken over Koetter. Thats right..I said it.

  34. Buc407 Says:

    I’d like him or a haurbaugh. However you spell it

  35. Bucballbaby84 Says:

    This is crazy cause I said a few weeks ago we need to get Jim Schwartz here

  36. Bobby M. Says:

    Good option…..curious to see how the defense finishes with Duffner.

  37. Buc407 Says:

    I don’t get why some of you think monken is the answer? He’s under dirks offense Not a defense coach and no nfl head coaching experience. What area exactly would he be a upgrade?

  38. Dapostman Says:

    #JimHarbaugh

  39. Bucsgonnabegreat Says:

    I said a few weeks ago we need to get him Schwartz here. That’s crazy Joe! Ool

  40. Rob Says:

    I’d rather give Dirk a 200 year extension.

  41. Bucsgonnabegreat Says:

    This is crazy Joe cause I said a few weeks ago we need to get Him here.

  42. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Urban Meyer”

    Kobe Faker

  43. Dom is gone ...Licht Says:

    90% of the people on this site including Joe thought Dork and Smitty were great hires! How did that work out????

  44. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Schwartz is an intriguing guy because of his fiery attitude and great D…. and I actually thought of his name recently….

    But…. no I don’t think so. — I would actually rather keep Dirk.

    It would be great if we could get Schwartz as the Def Coordinator, but I doubt that could happen.

  45. AlteredEgo Says:

    If my posts appeared in a timely fashion it would clear up much of the confusion following my post that does not appear

  46. SOEbuc Says:

    Straight up. Team needs a defensive HC that can put together a good defensive staff. This guy won a SB last year with one of the top defenses in the league so he’s not gonna be off my list of possibilities.

    John Harbaugh- Hell no

    Bruce Arians- Don’t need to pay an offensive coach $10 billion when we have the best offense in the league. We just have to find good offensive coaches to get us into the end zone.

    John DeFilipo- No OC just for the reason he’s a QB guru

    John DeFilipo- No

    Get your head’s outta your a$$ people! DEFENSE! THEY WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS OR GO DEEP INTO THE PLAYOFFS! Glazers need to be talking to the top defensive HC in the league and retired.

  47. LakeLand Says:

    The Detroit Lions went 11-5 the year after firing Jim Schwartz

    Jim Schwartz is just another retread

  48. Dwe Says:

    Keep dirk and get a good D.C. and clean out about 60% of the defensive players. Maybe defensive player is not a good choice but perhaps those who make a futile effort ar defense.

  49. SOEbuc Says:

    ^^or best defensive prospects in the league. No college HC or coordinator. This is the big leagues and our defensive players are a sh!t show (minus JPP and Nassib)^^

  50. gp Says:

    Dirk is an offensive coordinator without visible head coach skills, ie: game planning, management, player management, etc. etc.
    Schwarz is a good defensive coordinator…… was he any good at game planning, management etc.?

    Please don’t hire a “name”

  51. SOEbuc Says:

    STOP SAYING KEEP DIRK KOETTER ON AS OC!!! THAT SOFT ASS, BASIC PLAYBOOK HAS BEEN WHATS KEPT US OUTTA THE RED ZONE FOR FOUR YEARS!!!!

  52. SOEbuc Says:

    *correction. Koetter’s playbook can’t score in the red zone.

  53. westernbuc Says:

    All of the excuses they give Swartz apply to Koetter as well. The problems with the Bucs is that this organization has reset 3 or 4 times since firing Gruden. Finally, we have some good things going for us (like a GM that has found gems on the waiver wire and fixed our pass rush. And a coach that’s orchestrated the greatest offense in Bucs history) and everyone is ready to throw the whole thing out and start over again because we aren’t winning? Buc fans don’t deserve a winner

  54. Dewey Selmon Says:

    Maybe he can hire Jim Harbaugh for OC? Would love to see the handshake. lol

  55. Doug Says:

    Keep Koetter and hire a new GM.

  56. Couch Fan Says:

    Keep Dirk? LMAO. I dont know much about Schwartz but it would be hard to be worst than Dirk as HC. The guy has made so many mistakes that you want to just skip over because of your hate, that you claim doesnt exhist, for Winston. Ridiculous. I’d keep Dirk as OC, nothing more. And I’d choose almost anyone, cept Lovie, over him as HC.

  57. Buc50 Says:

    I’d rather get a guy off the offensive staff for the Rams or Chiefs to be honest. They work with young QBs and seem to design plays that get WRs open.

  58. AleteredEgo Says:

    It ain’t the HC…not this year

  59. Grt1 Says:

    This guy got punked by my boy Jim Harbaugh. Hard pass.

  60. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

    Honestly, I’d rather keep Dirk than hire Schwartz. Keep Dirk one more year and bring in a no-nonsense DC. Then we can finally decide what to do with Licht and Koetter.

  61. Oxycondoms Says:

    I would imagine getting a no non sense defensive coordinator would be a lot tougher if you don’t offer him a head coach job and if that doesn’t happen tour back to square 1 with koetter and a sorry defense

  62. Destinjohnny Says:

    Dirk will have to prove the same thing here
    He has been saddled with marginal talent
    And has been judged as if he had super bowl talent

  63. Waterboy Says:

    Dirk had last offseason to address the defensive coordinator position. Slow adjustments and leadership skills are his biggest downfalls they need someone who has a better handle on that locker room. Did he make DJax a captain again this week to keep him happy? Maybe DJax may actually decide to return a punt for him.

  64. Waterboy Says:

    Dirk is a good OC but not a head coach.

  65. Easy Says:

    LMFAO at Jim Schwartz replacing Koetter. Freaking LULZ.

  66. cmurda Says:

    The Harbaugh with the first name of John, I don’t think will be available. There was a lot of talk about him being canned and his team rose to get his back and are currently sitting in the second wildcard spot. It would be a very dumb mistake for the Ravens to fire him. I severely doubt he becomes available. As for the other Jim, I think his heart is in Michigan until he wins the National Championship. I would absolutely love Jim. I’d give him full control and VIP access to Mons to get that dude in here.

    On another note. I cannot believe we have people on here lobbying to keep Dirk. Unless the Bucs finish at least 8-8 kiss his ace goodbye💋. Did you not pay attention to the last 2 years and 12 weeks of regular season losing?

  67. Bucs 14 Says:

    The fan base better hope the Glazers find a magic sky wizard of a coach who can turn Magoo Magic, America’s Turnover Machine, into a franchise QB, because that is what most of the Winstopologists are believing is going to happen when the new HC is chosen.

  68. SOEbuc Says:

    Seems like a lot of you people don’t realize that Dirk Koetter put together this coaching staff. GM has influence and gives the okay but it’s Koetter’s staff he put together. Was it not weeks ago we all were calling for Koetter’s castration for keeping Mike Smith on for so long? Was it not when Monken started calling the plays that this offense looked so much more dynamic?

    Need to wipe this entire slate clean and start by finding a good president and GM and jerseys before we start talking coaching possibilities. Need to sign a couple big time defensive FA and hopefully a GM that can spot above average players for less money. Secondary is not going to work with a bunch of players that are not even out of their rookie contracts (they are good depth).

    Prime time CB and SS in FA.
    Round one: DT
    Round two: LB
    Round three: RT

  69. Tony LA Says:

    No thanks

  70. Jim Says:

    Keep Dirk, keep Winston (but pay him based on what he actually shows this year), focus on defense and think about who your QB will be if Winston trips on his dick again…

  71. Jean Lafitte Says:

    So what do we want this time? The press just can’t make up it’s mind. He’s too hard or he’s too soft. He’s not hard enough or he’s way too easy. We had Dungy, then we got Gruden. We had Morris then we got Schiano. We had Smith then we got even softer with Koetter. Now what? A hard@ss? Is Swartz a hard@ss?

  72. Rojas Says:

    Heck no. I would much rather have Vic Fangio.

  73. Rich Says:

    Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dumb should never and I mean NEVER hire a coach for this team again!!!! A strong, solid football man should be put in charge of the total football operations…..the boys should stick to observing and writing checks. They have proved over and over again that they cannot hire the right head coach……put a president in total control over all football decisions. We cannot continue to make the same mistakes over and over again

  74. SOFIERCE Says:

    #JimHarbaugh

  75. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    Love Schwartz as a defensive Coordinator, not a huge fan of him as a HC. Kind of view him as Koetter kind of coach in the sense that he’s a pretty damn good coach if he’s hyper focused on one area of the team but he can not be the guy in charge of overseeing the whole organization or he falls apart.

  76. BigMacAttack Says:

    Jim Harbaugh is an idiot but John Harbaugh is a good coach

  77. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    ^Both are great coaches.

  78. Ndog Says:

    So those of you that want to keep Dirk are ok with the following?

    Praises and plays Doug Martin when he was not the best back on the roster.

    Rotates left guards an entire season for no good reason.

    Praises Djax and makes him a captain when he is clearly a selfish player.

    Let’s Chris Baker come in here and do whatever he wants with zero accountability.

    Reatains Mike Smith in the off season.

    Retains Mike Smith during the bye week then fires him after the bye giving the new coordinator zero time to make changes.

    Totally screwed up the QB situation by not being clear and desisive about anything.

    Refeuses to find ways to play young running backs.

    Kept Jay Hayes, in fact resigned him then fired him later for no good reason.

    Flatly says he knows nothing about defense and has zero influence on it.

    Played Fitz way to long when it was more than clear his time was up.

    Took over the play calling to take the number one offense in the league to a whopping 3 points.

    Has not developed one freaking player in 3 years.

    Has seen players regress in his time here.

    Holds no one accountable ever.

    So yeah you’re right let’s keep him, he seems like a great leader of men.

  79. Rojas Says:

    I say Vic Fangio, or Kris Richards, John Harbaugh in no order.

  80. BucEmUp Says:

    As much as I have hated the job that Dirk has done so far, and out of emotion have stated I wanted him fired recently….I do find myself thinking more and more it may nt be horrible for him to get another year. I think it took him two seasons long to dump Mike Smith ANF it obviously screwed him up.

    It really would be pointless to change the offense as it’s doing just fine and Wil only get better ESPECIALLY without Desean Jackson . Regardless I think Monken and Buckner need to stay in some capacity.

    If they trade Jameis to.Jacksonville he wins a super bowl there. They need.to.kee Jameis.

  81. tmaxcon Says:

    you fools who keep bringing up Harbaugh are absolutely out of touch and flat-out hilarious….

    coaching in Tampa is the worst job in pro sports not just the nfl. small market team, no fans, no hope…. coaching bucs is much less prestigious than over half the texas high school coaching jobs. no one with options will choose bucs period.

  82. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

    Nick Saban GM/HC he will keep jameis & have bucs in nfc championship in 2020

  83. LocalJoker Says:

    Licht better give Arians a BJ if that’s what it takes to get him here!

  84. Bucs 14 Says:

    @Dushsty Rhothdes

    Saban will never leave BAMA until he retires permanently from football. Plus, his stint at Miami Dolphins was not good. Saban is a college guy.

  85. Bucs 14 Says:

    I’d like to throw out the names of Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma and or Dan Campbell from the Saints, who already has some NFL HC experience.

  86. Customer87 Says:

    Schwatz would be great. Only other good coach to come from Belichick. Has been Saban. He got a raw deal for trying fight Harbaugh after that game back in the day. Name a winning coach in Detroit since he left.

  87. Iron wombat Says:

    Dirk doesn’t get another year, this is one of the worse coached teams in the league. It’s the 32nd rank D in all catagories. It’s not a number one offense. Most yards are meaningless if you can’t score. Last time I checked our red zone offense wasn’t top 20. Scoring offense they were ranked 10 at best. No player or position group is improving.

  88. Buc4evr Says:

    So build up the defense and let the offense go to hell. Schwartz is a total joke and a loser as a HC. He couldn’t cut it as head coach and now we want to make him the Bucs head coach. Another retread loser… no thanks.

  89. rrsrq Says:

    Herm Edwards, He is ready to return, now that he got his tune up and I believe he has ASU bowl eligible in one year

  90. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

    Nick Saban is my choice gm/hc but could see glazers hiring eric bienemy as HC and he deserves a shot and andy reid coaches are doing great in nfl now. Bienemy might bring in kliff kingsbury OC & kris richard DC….. bucs need a new GM asap…..

  91. Rojas Says:

    I’ve also heard about Kliff Kingsbury

  92. Joe Says:

    coaching in Tampa is the worst job in pro sports not just the nfl. small market team, no fans, no hope

    Calm down. Who in their right mind would choose to live in, say Wisconsin, over Florida?

    Jim Harbaugh isn’t coaching the Bucs because the stadium isn’t filled. Jim Harbaugh isn’t coaching here because he runs the ship in Ann Arbor while pocketing $7 million a year.

    That’s a load of crap anyway. I was very impressed with the crowd against the 9ers. This is a team that is clearly not going to the playoffs and the crowd was 90% Bucs fans.

  94. gotbbucs Says:

    You cant play defense anymore, so why hire a defensive head coach?

  95. gotbbucs Says:

    Arian’s is not the answer either. He’s already got one foot in the grave.

    For the love of god NO. George Edwards from the Vikings would be my choice!

  98. WalkdaPlank Says:

    “Has not developed one freaking player in 3 years.”

    I’m not the biggest Dirk fan. But this is flat out wrong. We have 5 games left to play in the season and the Bucs have the No.1 offense in the NFL. When has that ever happened before? Also Dirk has taken nobodies like Cameron Brate and Adam Humphries and turned them into great players under his system. You can’t credit their success without crediting Dirk. Mike Evans has not regressed, which is a good thing because he is the offenses best player. O.J Howard has thrived in his offense. I’ve been critical of Peyton Barber all year but he has stepped up the last couple of games as well.

    I’m not saying to keep Dirk, but not everything he has done is terrible. And he has developed a few players who will be serviceable for our next head coach.

  99. Dave Anglin Says:

    If this happened I’d be ok with it as long as Monken was the OC.

    “Praises and plays Doug Martin when he was not the best back on the roster.”

    It’s a hard sell to claim Peyton Barber is that much better than Martin. This year has proven that. It’s the offensive line.

    “Rotates left guards an entire season for no good reason.”

    Or, you know, our guards kinda suck (excluding Marpet)

    Praises Djax and makes him a captain when he is clearly a selfish player.

    First, it’s a players league, that makes it smart on his part. Second, players vote for captains.

    “Let’s Chris Baker come in here and do whatever he wants with zero accountability.”

    Licht brought him in and cut him. Definition of accountability.

    “Reatains Mike Smith in the off season.”

    Media wanted Smith to stay too. After they re-signed him, Scott Reynolds called that the move of the offseason.

    “Retains Mike Smith during the bye week then fires him after the bye giving the new coordinator zero time to make changes.”

    That was weeks ago, defense is still bad (49ers game exempt.) Plenty of time to improve, but they haven’t. Maybe the problem isn’t the coaches…

    “Totally screwed up the QB situation by not being clear and desisive about anything.”

    Jameis screwed up the situation.

    “Refeuses to find ways to play young running backs.”

    Well when Licht drafts a guy that can’t catch or block, he’s basically useless.

    “Kept Jay Hayes, in fact resigned him then fired him later for no good reason.”

    They were holding out for Buckner, d line was terrible last year. GMC wanted Hayes out. Buckner became available, so they fired Hayes.

    “Flatly says he knows nothing about defense and has zero influence on it.”

    He doesn’t micromanage. That’s actually a good leadership quality. Remember, Lovie *knew* defense, took it from Leslie Frazier, and we saw how that went.

    “Played Fitz way to long when it was more than clear his time was up.”

    Jameis looked terrible against the Browns and Bengals. You can’t say that was “clear.”

    “Took over the play calling to take the number one offense in the league to a whopping 3 points.”

    And how many turnovers in the redzone?

    “Has not developed one freaking player in 3 years.”

    Humphries, Brate, Marpet, Evans, OJ, Jameis, Barber are all better than when they entered the league.

    “Has seen players regress in his time here.”

    Every team has players regress every year…

    “Holds no one accountable ever.”

    Benched Jameis for turnovers, didn’t hand him the starting job. Players get cut when the contract allows them too.

    “So yeah you’re right let’s keep him, he seems like a great leader of men.”

    Koetter has his faults, but unless Sean McVay or Belicheat are available, you can’t tell me there’s many better options.

    So he gets credit for having an offense that can get a lot ton of yards?
    Excuse me but he does have a number one overall pick for a QB, a number seven overall pick as a wide out, another first round pick as a TE, two second round picks on the oline, the highest paid center in football, a second round running back, another second round WR, AND it is all his doing?????? Wow I just don’t how anyone can succeed with that lack of skill on offense!!!! Dude this offense is loaded now look at the talent on defense and tell us why this team sucks. We have the number three overall pick (McCoy), another first round pick (Vea), a second round pick in Spence, a pro bowl level player in JPP all on the dline, at LB we have LVD former pro bowler, Kwon fourth round pick, at corner we have a top 10 pick, two second round picks, and a former pro bowler, then at saftey we have another second round pick, yet with all that draft capital we STILL have the worst seconary in football. Yeah this team hasn’t given him squat to work with!?!?!?!?

  107. ghost Says:

    Same guy with different names parroting Koetter will be here next year lol. Koetters clock/game management has been horrible, his flipping back and forth between starting QBs was shameful, his handling of desean jackson and making him a team captain was pitiful, his depressed look at press conferences is okay though.

    This is why he should be gone.

  108. Howard Cosell Says:

    Keep Koetter

  109. Howard Coselini Says:

    @Howard Cosell
    I agree with you. Keep Koetter…..and may I say you are intelligent and good looking too!

  110. WalkdaPlank Says:

    Ndog

    Where did I say he wasn’t given anything to work with? C’mon man. I’m simply saying the development of UFA’s Brate and Humphries is to Dirk’s credit and hopefully Barber keeps doing well too. You said he didn’t develop a single player which is false.

    You say players have regressed under him but our best offensive players have not, like Mike Evans and O.J Howard. So you are wrong again.

    Never did I say this team didn’t have talent and never did I say Dirk is amazing at developing players. He is not fit to make any major decisions defensively and should’ve never left the OC position. But what you said was not true.

    Next thing you’ll say Jameis Winston is a franchise QB lol oh wait…

  111. Trench War Says:

    Skins laid claims on Foster. Supposedly they were the only team to claim him off waivers. Leave it to a Gruden lol

  112. John Says:

    I think the decline line is starting to get together. I think McCoy is taking a step back letting jpp be the leader we need. Hes def having a good affect on Carl nassib who Jason licht got for the bucs by committing grand larceny. Vea looked good next to gerald last game and if we had our linebackers I dont think brieda would have broke loose as much as he did. I think we draft some corners and another safety. Hit a couple free agents and get Schwartz in here with monken and see what this team can do next year.

  113. Rod Munch Says:

    Trench War – He slapped a phone out of the hand of a woman who falsely accused him of abuse? He should have done a lot more than that. I don’t know the deal with Foster, but he’s clearly an idiot if he keeps hanging out with a woman who filed a fake police report against him, but the question is he back with her or did she just show up. I don’t know the ends and outs of the story, I don’t really care that much, but I hate the idea that she files a fake police report, tries to ruin the guys life and gets zero punishment for it.

    Back to Foster why wouldn’t you claim him? You claim him for now, see what the follow-up to the situation is, and if he’s cleared or it turns out to be nothing, then you got a really really good player. If it turns out he’s guilty of something real then you cut him – and since he’s suspended I don’t think it even cost you anything.

    The Bucs had a chance to take the tackle who was interviewed about a murder and slipped in the draft – I said at the time you take him with a last round pick and see what happens – if there is something to the story, well you wasted a 7th rounder, if there is nothing to the story you got a starting offensive lineman. Well there was nothing to the story, and instead Dallas got a starting offensive
    lineman out of it.

  114. cmurda Says:

    @WalkdaPlank

    I don’t disagree with much of what you said but Dirk gets zero credit for Barber. In fact, his biggest weakness is with personnel. He has no clue how to use Ronald Jones and it wasn’t long ago, as in last year, when Dirk said time and again that Doug Martin would be the starting RB despite the promise that Barber showed and the 2 YPC that Dougie showed. I guarantee you that if Payton had ROJO instead of Kamara, ROJO would be tearing it up. I like Quizz. Guy never complains, is reliable, and does is job as well as he can. With that said, I long for the day that ROJO replaces him. Quizz would not be on any other NFL roster and if by chance he was, there is no way he would be getting this many snaps.

  115. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    No Disrespect to our current Head Coach Dirk Koetter.
    But if the organization does turn the page. Here’s a great option

    Head coaches
    • Head Coach – Vic Fangio
    • Asst. Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator – Mike Mularkey

    Offensive Coaches
    • Sr. Offensive Assistant/Quarterbacks Coach – Todd Haley
    • Running Backs – Maurice Carthon
    • Wide Receivers – Bob Bratkowski
    • Tight Ends Coach– Rob Chudzinski
    • Offensive Line – Russ Grimm
    • Assistant Offensive Line – Mike Sullivan

    Defensive Coaches
    • Defensive Coordinator: Todd Bowles
    • Defensive Passing Game Coordinator – Dennis Thurman
    • Defensive Line – Brentson Buckner
    • Assistant defensive line – La’Roi Glover
    • Outside Linebackers – Kevin Greene
    • Inside Linebackers – Mike Caldwell
    • Defensive backs – Ed Donatell
    • Assistant defensive backs – Dennard Wilson

    Executive Vice President – Rick Smith

  116. WalkdaPlank Says:

    cmurda

    I can agree with you on that. Dirk’s use of running backs has been atrocious.

  117. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    Can someone tell me what you all think of pulling Lombardi out of Saints and into a OC position??? I think right now he’s only a QB coach..

    I’m asking for a friend..and this time it’s really a an asking for a friend..

  118. adam from ny Says:

    wow, i’m hearing all the head coach replacement rumblings, but quite frankly most of the names get me in eh, meh or nah mode…but this guy is the move – i think he has a lot left to prove post detroit, and would be the perfect pairing with this soft azz defense…hopefully you can keep monk, and let him retool the defense and staff…glazers, this is your hire if you can snag him!

  119. adam from ny Says:

    dirk hates jenna…that’s enough to dismiss the guy…i hope jenna gets staunch on ole dirkie…

    she should start asking him ridiculous questions about him getting canned, calling time outs when he never has any, and compare his patchwork beard to fitzies…she’s a woman – she can really work on ole dirkie if she wants to…

    jenna vs. dirk – the soap opera continues by the bay

  120. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

    Because Koetter is offensive minded, rumors have it that they intend to keep him and allow Licht to search for a new Defensive coordinator to fix the Defense. If we have a top 3 offense and Jameis does well down the stretch, then I see no harm in granting Koetter another year to prove himself.

    I know many here sees it differently, but it is not all Koetter’s fault for losing most of the games. I think it is easier to replace the entire Defensive coaching staff than replacing the entire coaching staff. If the Defense was just average, we would be 6-5 or better at this point in the season.

  121. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    Bringing back Dirk Koetter for 2019 is basically begging to start 3-5 again next year.

  122. Anonymous Says:

    Please no, Schwartz is much better as a DC, terrible as an HC. I’d much rather go with JDR.

  123. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    May the Schwartz be with us.

  124. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    tmaxcon says
    “coaching in Tampa is the worst job in pro sports not just the nfl. small market team, no fans, no hope”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Ridiculous commentary. The Tampa Bay Lightning were voted last year as the #1 franchise in all of professional sports. So obviously those words don’t hold water. — The Bucs can get all of those things back too.
  125. Mike10 Says:
    Why would you bring in a defensive-minded coach, in an offensive era for football?
  126. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
    TouchDownTampaBay Says
    “Nobody gives a sh1t was some poster thinks…”
    People check it all the time, so that proves you wrong. Clearly, in your experience, nobody cares what YOU think, so you think it is the same for everyone. That says more about you than it does about others.
  127. 813bucboi Says:
  129. zzbuc Says:
    KEEP KOETTER….BRING DEFENSE COORDINATOR AND A NEW GM…..!!!!!!!
  130. BucsFanSince1976 Says:
    Put in Father Dungy (if he will have them) as President of Football Operations with total control of hiring coaches and player personnel. C’mon Joel and Bryan Tony Dungy will turn around this franchise , Tony already did it once when you had been mired in the doldrums for over a quarter of a century.
  131. Troy Says:
    LOVEMYBUCS has got it. Fangio for HC.
  132. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    You guys have made some great points about Vic Fangio. With all of his accolades though, my question is why it has not happened for him before now?
  133. Cobraboy Says:
    Keep Koetter, gut the defense top to bottom, cull the expensive dead wood and a brand new D staff, keep none of the current losers.
    The team spent lavishly on the O for years, time to spend on the D.
  134. doolnutts Says:
    Other than the obvious I don’t know how a hire like this isn’t the same as just keeping Koetter… Both are great coordinators but as head coach both are questionable. Reading between the lines of the “he didnt get a fair shake at Detriot” comment he would have gotten more time then Koetter should Koetter be fired. The strength of this team is clearly the offense bringing in a guy who will have little to do with the strengths of this team leaves me seriously questioning a move like this.
  135. Mort Says:
    Keep Dirk and get a new DC and whatever assistants they want. The offense isn’t the problem at all. It’s the defense, and Jameis maturing as a player.
  136. Jmarkbuc Says:
    Keep Dork?
    Seriously? There’s more to HC than being an OC….
    Monken has proven that Dork may or may not be necessary.
    I don’t want a head coach that makes DJax a captain..after trying to get a trade. Or Doesn’t decide who is returning punts.. or doesn’t mandate anything. .or doesn’t really game plan
    That list could go on and on…how many times has this team come out “flat” as in flat out unprepared…
    Is this the “continuity” we want?
  137. TOM Says:
    First and formost get rid of Licht. No more retreads for HC. Need young blood for todays NFL. Also no college head coaches. Maybe Kris Richard or DiFillipo to name a couple. Also Warhop’s got to go.
  138. Jlbucs Says:
    People have gone full on moron by saying Koetter should come back when he has all but asked to be fired. His lack of professionalism and undermining behavior towards the organization should not be rewarded with another year. Big dog was right, too many gooberville fans out there.
  139. joestang Says:
    just get rid of Licht. We dont need any more of his influence on this team. A new GM could be the fix. GO DERRICK BROOKS
  140. Chief Says:
    Nah, this ain’t it Chief!
