“No Disrespect, Of Course, To Gerald McCoy”

Interesting disclaimer issued by former Buccaneers tight end Dave Moore, the longtime analyst on official Bucs radio broadcasts.
Moore sees a Buccaners defensive line on the rise, one being uplifted by the work, passion and performance of Jason Pierre-Paul.
“With the addition of Jason Pierre-Paul, he’s a true professional, he’s a tough guy. He raises the level of all those players on the defensive line. No disrespect of course to Gerald McCoy, but this guy has a passion that is contagious,” Moore said on WDAE-AM 620 today. “And guys like Vita Vea learning underneath him, [Carl] Nassib. … … He’s playing at a high level now; he’s coming like full speed on every play.”
Joe doesn’t want to put words in Moore’s mouth, but it sure sounded like Moore doesn’t view McCoy as a guy who raises the games of those around him.
Interestingly, Joe chatted with former Bucs defensive line coach Brian Cox about that years ago during the Schiano administration, and Cox emphasized that the next big step for McCoy was becoming the kind of guy who raised the game of others.
Did McCoy become that guy? Joe can’t say either way with any certainty. But the evidence points toward McCoy not being not that kind of inspirational force. However, it sure seems like McCoy has indeed helped JPP reach a new level this season.
There’s a lot of respect between them, which was further evident in the locker room after Sunday’s victory when McCoy interrupted JPP’s news conference and sang his praises. JPP thanked him and seemed eager to share the spotlight.

It’s evident that McCoy’s leadership and fire for the game raised the level of JPP’s play, who in turn has raised the level for everyone else on the defensive line!

I have been very critical of McCoy but I really liked him holding back the dline and them coming out as a unit on Sunday. I noticed it when it was happening and was hoping it was done with a purpose. Not that it makes them better players but it might make them a better unit because they are playing for each other instead of playing for themselves.

McCoy has never been that guy. Bennet/Clayborn seem to do better on other teams. Even Ghost Johnson became useful again in Cincy it seemed.
It’s not even a subjective opinion. It’s objectively true that no D-lineman have elevated their play substantially around McCoy; and that generally the opposite phenomenon has occurred.
I’m down to let McCoy walk. Sign a premier established FA CB with that $$. Let Djax walk. Sign another CB or S. Draft all D-line along with one OT and one OG sprinkled in the middle and late rounds.

If the d-line unit starts clicking….maybe we restructure McCoy to free up some money….Let D-Jax go or trade him….Let Grimes go assuming Hargreaves can return. We need a running game and secondary. Going to have to give away a weapon on offense and vet on defense to fix the running game.

Ill never understand how folks can blame McCoy for the tragedy that is the Tampa Bay Bucs for last ten years.
Clearly one of our better players since drafted. Is he the dominant figure you want that high? Maybe not but we have had a lot bigger problems than Gerald for sure.
Like the clown show head coaches for example.

Lord Corn exactly and great points, it is not in him to do that, again licht should have traded him at the deadline. If you take GMC off the NFLs worst defense in NFL history what can happen to it? It cant get worse but you could add picks to make the future better, licht should have traded gmc and djax for future players but when you have a joke of a GM you have a joke of a team

You could argue that Mccoy has elevated JPPs play this year. JPP is easily having his best year since his injury. Easily.
I dont think McCoy is an inspirational force, but his talent in the middle has definitely had an impact on JPPs ability to get free.

Like Batman, he has his own personal demons to contend with. Outside the occasional ice cream treats he doesn’t appear to be as inspiring as JPP.

GMAC doesn’t have the kind of personality or leadership style to inspire with voice. In fact he comes across as almost, dare I say, a nerd. People who criticize his play because of his particular personality just don’t get it.
The Buccaneers should have allowed him to be low key and lead by example all of these years. He has tried to step up in a public way. It just doesn’t work for him.
He remains one of the premier defensive linemen in the NFL.

I guess. JPP has been a beast whenever healthy in this league tho. He already had a 16.5 sack season back in his prime and a 12 sack season and was pacing for 10+ in 2016 before injury.
Nassib might be a better argument.
I just am over McCoy really. Only consistent factor left in all this losing of the last decade. Consistently a leader of bottom 3 defenses. Probably not his fault but I just want change for the sake of it at this point lol

Name 5 DTs that has had more production than GMC over the last 7 years, and when you name thos 5, look who they played beside and look who GMC has had next to him. They let Clayborn walk, probably the best to play next to him and how great was he when he wasn’t injured, ijs.

GMC had 9.5 sacks one year. When JPP finally got the double digits NOBODY appreciated it more than GMC. If you compare GMCs career stats to Suh’s you’ll find very similar numbers. Geez what if Suh enjoyed the hell out of “Black Panther”? Is that why his numbers don’t dominate GMC’s.
None of the GMC bashers here EVER bring up FACTS…they talk about Batman and call GMC soft….THEIR opinion.
AGAIN….GMC is NOT Warren Sapp…he was NEVER going to be anymore than Suh or a dozens of other DT’s. Sapp is the GOAT.
GMC has been a loyal Buc…he’s frequently played hurt…surrounded by losers like Swaggy, Ghost Johnson, and many others and because they sucked it’s GMC’s fault for not elevating their sorry games?
He’s never made a meaningful play…Joe has popped this balloon of hot air frequently.
Until this season I would have been with Lord C and others on board with trading GMC. But I think GMC and JPP have really clicked…no envy…admiration for each other…it’s the FIRST FREAKING time I’ve seen ANY chemistry on our DL since the glory days.
And according to this piece the combo of JPP and GMC HAS elevated the play of others like Nassib and Vea. I’m not sure I’m ready to douse the chemistry.

Why do people try to force “leadership” on players that are not natural leaders?
Is there anything about a talented player with a fetish for comic book superheroes that speak to “leadership?”
As opposed to a guy who blew half his hand off and whose sole purpose in life is to maim and dismember a guy with a small number on his jersey?
Same with David. He used to be a talented guy, but has he ever exhibited leadership qualities?
C’Mon. Accept players for what they are.
This team doesn’t have many team leaders. Buc fans are spoiled because the SB team had leaders all over the place.

St Pete……Agree with most of your post but just realize there is a sect. of Bucs fans(like me) who are just dissapointed in McCoys play and feel that he never meets expectations.
The perfect example of this was the Giants and Skins games. Back to back weeks he faced some of worst Olines that he’ll see all year…….I just feel like it would be nice if we could expect McCoy to take over a game like this. Years ago I did expect McCoy to show up at certain times…..now I’ve learned you can’t expect anything from this guy. He always dissapoints.
You can win with players like McCoy but you will never win because of them. He just aren’t a good face for our defense IMO.
Not every fan cares about him smiling or that he likes Batman…..I could have lived without him helping up Ben Rothlisberger but I didn’t throw a fit about it..
I have been labeled a hater here before just for being critical of McCoy. It’s getting to be a stain on this fanbase that some fans are labeled haters just for being honest and critical……..The anti-haters can be just as lame as the haters sometimes and , likely, all it does is fuel the hate.

I hear ya and you make valid points. I think in addition to his naturally happy go lucky personality GMC was doomed from the beginning because he followed the GOAT at his position.
So I get your disappointment.
Here is mine…lol…if GMC had kicked a couple of players when they were down…if he spit on guys…punched them and cursed a lot, there is a significant segment here who would love him with exactly the same production on the field.
Oh and if GMC really wanted to win the hearts of the hard core like TMAX…he could have beat the helll out of one of the Mon’s star performers and gotten suspended a couple games he would have been golden.

The Bucs are probably the only team that would have paid McCoy so much for so long. No marquee QB to pay while he’s been a Buc…last rookie class prior to the rookie salary cap…generous extension…and thankfully the final season of guaranteed loot is 2018. I would be stunned if he’s back next year. Probably not tradable due to 8 figure salary unfortunately. A strange and underwhelming era of Buc football.

when i watch hump play, i cant tell if we’re down 21 or up 21 because he gives it his all every single play…..

stpete & Cobraboy- Spot on. He’s never been as good as some’s expectations and never will. Getting paid the most does not automatically make you a leader.
I did expect a better season from him, however. Playing alongside far better players was always the Achilles heel. Maybe Vea’s emergence will spawn crazy numbers over 5 games?
If he doesn’t, I’ll have to eat crow from tmax…..of all people!!!

Uh… literally what anyone with a brain said before the season was that teams will either have to double McCoy or JPP, but can’t do both, and one will get production. Well if you’ve watched the games it’s generally McCoy getting doubled – which has left JPP to work one-on-one, and we’ve seen the double digit results as JPP is on the way to possibly a 15 sack season.
As for McCoy he’s not 26 anymore and he’s not as quick as he used to be, but he’s still getting double teamed and still gets production. How do we know this? Because teams continue to double team McCoy even as JPP continues to produce – so what does that tell you?

I heard he was emotional when jpp broke the double digit sack drought. Like he cried. Maybe some of you think that’s ok but I don’t. You cry when somebody dies…you get a divorce… you lose your dog even. Like I said I’m not bashing him he seems like a good dude..but we’re at the bottom of the division again and saints are at the top agaain. I mean does this crap not get old to you guys?? McCoy is long in the tooth right now. I can’t zero in on him every play but whenever I see some up the guy runs I frequently see him getting blocked sideways and rb has a clear cut.
I don’t think his body strength is up to his size. Maybe he lacks stamina, watch how many times he is gassed. I believe like many Bucs, they played hard for their second contracts then became softer over the years.
He has played through many injuries so no questions about his desire. I just don’t see a dominant player at his position and as he goes on for another couple of years he can’t be counted on as an every snap player.
He hasn’t tasted playoffs so as the best player on the different defenses how dominating was he ever? He’s good that’s it and he isn’t going to get better at his age now. JPP is only a year younger but he is so much stronger and has the leverage and flexibility that you don’t get out of Gerald.
JPP is an elite athlete, GMC is a good football player but not athletic enough to dominate games.

Anywho I don’t take some troll comment that starts “I heard” as being worth anything. But if he was standing on the sidelines crying like a woman because JPP got double digits, then yes, that would be an issue and the sign of someone who is incredibly emotionally unstable. Very well said, Todd, and couldn’t agree more. Some of the toughest, most rugged individuals that I have ever known will easily shed a tear for emotion, passion or pride of the accomplishments of another.
