Dominik: No $21 Million Market For Jameis; Bucs Could Expect Leverage
November 24th, 2018Some pundits think America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, would be the hottest free agent on the market if he were cut loose by Tampa Bay after this season.
But at what price? Former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik weighed in.
Speaking on WDAE-AM 620 this week, Dominik said he believes Jameis will be auditioning from here forward for his Buccaneers future. And if Jameis looks good for a couple of games, Dominik said the Bucs could move on a chance to sign Jameis quickly to a one-year contract for 2019 — after tearing up his fifth-year option that’s set to pay him $21 million next year.
Why tear up the 2019 option? Because they’d be overpaying.
“I think they’re going to try to hold on to Jameis now; let him play through this and kind of get a better sense of what they want to do with him. Because remember, just because he has the fifth-year option, it’s not fully guaranteed yet until the new league year [in March],” Dominik said.
“There is a chance that the Buccaneers and their mentality could be to go to Joel Siegel, his agent and go, ‘Hey, look. We realize what the fifth-year option is, this number [$21 million]. No one’s going to sign Jameis for that number. Just so you guys know. We all know no one is going to sign him [at that price]. So we’ll do a one-year deal for you at X. And we’ll give it one more year to kind of see where it goes. And you get to be the free agent at the end of [2019], so it’s just a one-year deal. But if I say I’m not going to pick it up, you’re not going to make that much money.’
“And I truly believe that in my heart. Not that I don’t like Jameis or don’t want him to have success, it’s just most clubs right now if you look around the league, there’s not many clubs that say, ‘I don’t like my quarterback situation.’ Or they’re going to look toward the draft and say, ‘I think I can get my quarterback there.’ And so that’s where I think you’ve got a little bit of leverage over Jameis right now … to talk to his agent about just maybe a one-year deal at a lower number.”
Dominik has plenty of friends in the league and loads of sources, including at One Buc Palace. So Joe finds it very interesting that Dominik thinks nobody would pay Jameis the going rate for an average starting QB.
Perhaps the pending civil case (Jameis is being sued for sexual assault in Arizona) is a factor?
One question that’s rarely considered is whether Jameis wants to stay with the Buccaneers. He may very well be advised to get a fresh start, and he might want one.
No snoozing on TAMPA TWO. Buccaneers legend Derrick Brooks brings the video juice to his preview of the Bucs-49ers game with Ira Kaufman. Plenty of other Bucs chatter, too. Brooks is lit!

The Domer is actually seeing his replacement do as bad as he did…under the guise of “not wishing bad things for the Bucs”. He sounds polished on XM Radio yet those of us Bucs fans who saw what he did to the franchise know better.

Leading the league in turnovers won’t exactly help you much

The way he’s played he doesn’t deserve 21 million and I’d be shocked if anyone paid him that much especially with one more off field incident and he’s likely suspended a year or longer
Him wanting to stay is irrelevant as the Bucs controlhis rights for at least 3 more years

The Dom is right. WHo is going to pay Jameis 21 mil for a season? Look around the league. Of course..unless Jameis wins out. And we all know that ain’t happennin..not with these Bucs. Best thing for Jameis to dois..eat more balls or throw it away instead of forcing the ball.

Matt Ryan threw 45 INTs in 3 years under Koetter

I have to agree with the DOM
Actually, I was thinking this in October
Also these last 6 games will set the market value for him
His market is thin as it is
Most teams are set at QB, or not willing to spend $2 million

This is a week-to-week league. Dak Prescott, is a perfect example of that. For weeks everyone didn’t believe that he was a “Franchise QB,” but after that Thanksgiving game, everyone’s back on the bandwagon. Winning cures everything, and Jameis knows that.

@Patrick
Sam Darnold and Ryan Fitzpatrick currently hold those spots.

Dominick is being stupid.
Winston has to be willing to settle for less before they tear up that option contract, because if they tear it up first, he will possibly leave.
Winston isn’t stupid. He knows he can fetch probably $25 million next year if he leaves. He will be the hottest free agent…and there is absolutely no other QB that will hit free agency that will come close to being as attractive as he is. I’ve checked.

All Winston has to do is not self destruct and he will have a huge market. Teams are chomping at the bit to get a shot at landing him.

Joe the factor is the sexual assault and the fact he has yet to even get 20 career wins …he’s an average qb … he’s in the bottom of the bucket for qbs … he’s not an elite qb that you make him out to be

Holy crap the Winston knob slobberers are idiots.

And as a Bucs assistant told Joe, “with upside.” So the alternative is, what, a below average quarterback (who will cost $18 million) with no upside? That’s what the Bucs are looking at. Unless, of course, they draft a QB in the first roun and no one expects that guy to do anything decent his rookie year if he turns out at all.
Not to mention the real possibility that said rookie quarterback’s agent pulls an Eli Manning and demands a trade right away.
Perhaps Detroit might put Matthew Stafford on the trading block and try to dump his salary. There’s always that prayer if you don’t want Jameis.
