Explosives Vs. Takeaways

November 24th, 2018

Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking, Ozark-watching coach Dirk Koetter is on a turnovers kick the past month or so.

Koetter has always said outside of turnovers, no other stat determines wins or losses better than explosive plays.

He’s probably right. Among the nine teams with the fewest takeaways in the NFL, none has a winning record. (In order from the basement, 49ers, Bucs, Ravens, Eagles, Raiders, Titans, Lions, Falcons, Jaguars.)

The Bucs are getting explosive plays but not takeaways. Among NFL offenses, explosives, or lack of explosives, has been a pretty good barometer on how a team is playing.

The Bucs have a bunch of explosives, fourth most in the NFL. Sure the Bucs are 3-7 but let’s turn the tables.

Per the good people of NFL Films, which tally stats for BSPN’s NFL Matchup, an explosive play is defined as 20 yards through the air and 15 yards on the ground. Of the five worst offenses for explosive plays (Cardinals, Titans, Dolphins, Bills and Lions), none have a winning record. The Titans and Dolphins are 5-5.

Matthew Stafford is turning out to be just an average QB. He’s mired in Jay Cutler territory.

  2. Rojas Says:

Michigan scored 2 touchdowns in 6 seconds sheesh.

  3. ERIC Says:

Jay Cutler was hardly average with the exception of a year or two. Id say Stafford is top 10qb but 50% of time

  4. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Matthew Stafford is what Jameis will be 7 years from now if he does not shake this turnover bug. — Please fix it, #3.

  5. Howard Cosell Says:

Howard hates to take time out of his day to help the glazetards w their cluster****……..but here goes….

The problem is the top level culture (or lack thereof).
The g’s are either aloof, inaccessible, insincere, disinterested or all of the above. The only way to turn it around is for the players, coaches and front office to onestly believe that the g’s have their back. I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to say working for the Bucs is a lot like working for Walmart.

The failures by no less than FIVE different coaching staffs since the gt’s took control show, unequivocally and indisputably, that the coaches are not the problem…the owners are.
Gruden, Morris, Schiano, Smith and Koetter have ALL failed under the gt’s.

Koetter is a damn good coach on a very poorly run team.

Glazer shills and sock puppets feel free to chime in and ask me how I dare question the gt’s and their money. Then you can follow up with some personal attacks and then finish by telling me how it really is Koetters fault and how wonderful the gt’s are….right?….

  6. Not there yet Says:

Well Koetter time to get fired. Your stupid theory about explosive plays equaling wins has backfired, should have focused on actually coaching up players and your sad coaching staff, they need more training than the players.

  7. Howard Cosell Says:

Amazing how dumb people are that they can’t see the real problem

  8. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Michigan on the ropes vs. Ohio State…can a fan dream of Jim Harbaugh wanting to get back to the NFL? He brought out the absolute best in Alex Smith & Kapernick. The chances are slim & none I know…

  9. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Amazing how everyone who thinks that THEY know what the real problem is, always seems to want to call everyone else dumb.

  10. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Howard…I absolutely agree with you.

I’ve been calling for culture change…of the magnitude of that which occurred when Dungy was brought in.

This horrid culture has transcended all the coaches you just mentioned…star players from GMC to JW…it obviously as you point out starts at the top with the Glazers.

They are not about to sell the team…it’s a mint that turns out multi millions every year. Our only hope is that they have enough brains…and enough control over their egos to hire Dungy back as President of Football operations and then stay the hell out of his way or whomever we bring in to straighten this mess out.

Obviously Dungy is not the only person qualified but I do believe he’s part of a very short list.

Sadly when people succeed in one area that makes them think they are automatically going to be successful in all areas. Money is the very worst. A person makes a ton in ONE area and they then believe they can figure out anything. The Glazers are clearly sharp business people…they just as clearly suck at football decisions. Step aside boys!!!! Hire the right right person and let them fill the rest of the needs.

  11. Season Is Over Says:

Yes, there are a select few trying to act like they the fans are clueless for questioning Winston. Everyone outside of Tampa is laughing at Winston right now. No one thinks he is Marino or Mannning except the Joebucscluelessfan buying into the propaganda. Weapons for Winston, now we need a top 5 D for Winston. Where does it end and he has to pull his end of the bargain? I have waited four years.

  12. Season Is Over Says:

I have a hard time figuring out why all these excuses for Winston have come about just this year. He has been here four years. None of this was a secret. The running game has been up and down just as the defense has. Ebb and flow. Winston has consistently not put the team over the top. Maybe the Winstopologists are emboldened because he played a good quarter of football and plays one of the worst teams in the league this week. If history has taught us anything it is that they will be disappointed soon enough as he has given this city nothing to cheer for since he got here. I suppose they are clinging to whatever success they can.

  13. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs has more explosive turnovers on offense than explosive plays on offense. This is why they are losing.

    -23 turnover ratio

  14. LakeLand Says:

Thee are the teams with 20 offensive turnovers or more

    Tampa Bay. 3-7 | 29 Turnovers
    Buffalo. 3-7 | 22 Turnovers
    NY Jets. 3-7 | 22 Turnovers
    Arizona. 2-8 | 21 Turnovers
    Jacksonville. 3-7 | 20 Turnovers
    San Francisco. 2-8 | 20 Turnovers

    They all stinks

  15. JimmyJack Says:

Look at that we are top 5!!! Can we be proud of our team now?

  16. Jim Says:

What Cosell said, and said well. I said it over a year ago,..it’s not just a coach, or a QB or a defense unit, not when it spans over a decade.

  17. Scorps1234 Says:

This is what the Glazer’s should do. They should put the cheerleaders in charge of coaching the team and put/ stuff the current coaching staff and GM into the cheerleading uniforms to entertain the fans.

The coaching would have to improve and while the new cheerleaders would be .. well fugly, uncoordinated, and have no sense of rhythm at least it would be funny instead of the defensive scheme which shares all those qualities. Oh I forgot bumbling which describes Kotter’s press conferences as well as his alter ego name bumbling idiot.

  18. Larry Says:

How about Urban Meyer as next Bucs head coach? He has been a winner every where he has been. The pro game has changed a ton in the past few years. Why not get someone who understands that and knows where modern football is headed? He knows how to evaluate talent. He always fields a really good team. Other than the one health issue he seems to have, how could he not succeed in the pros? Just sayin”.

  19. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Larry,

Kobe agrees, Meyer is the perfect choice

I think Meyer and Ohio State will separate end of the year

10 mill per year 5 years ( millions will comeback from revenue and who cares its not from the salary cap and its not our money)

Meyer will pick his GM (only way Meyer will agree)”

    Kobe Faker

  20. Bucsalltheway Says:

Good stuff lakeland….but the reason we are worst than any ball club is because we actually have talent and they dont. We’re an average defense and consistent kicker away from winning again. I would say running back but barber hard running style grew on me this year
