Kyle Shanahan Doesn’t See The Same Gerald McCoy
November 22nd, 2018Father Time rarely misses a tackle.
Two years ago at the NFL Scouting Combine, Joe talked to then-Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan about Gerald McCoy. Shanahan, now the 49ers head coach, raved about McCoy and explained in great detail how McCoy was a monster to game plan for.
Joe loved sharing the quotes because it stuffed a sock in the mouths of many McCoy bashers.
“You try to tire him out,” said Shanahan in March of 2017. “When he is going, he is as hard — if he knows what is happening, it is tough for anyone in the league to block him. He comes off the ball too hard, too quick, too physical. So you have to tire him out. You have to wear him down. You have to keep him guessing.
“How are you going to block him? Are you going to cut him? Stay high? Go at him or from the backside? But if he knows [what the offense is trying to do], it is going to be a long day.”
Impressive stuff it was from Shanahan, who talked about McCoy like he was an All-World player.
Yesterday at One Buc Palace, Joe again asked Shanahan about McCoy, via conference call. Joe simply reminded Shanahan that he’s seen years of film on McCoy and asked Shanahan how McCoy might look different now that he’s turned 30.
This time, the Niners head coach made it sound like McCoy isn’t quite the player he used to be.
“I’m not going to say every single play he looks the same, which happens to everybody,” Shanahan said. “But I promise you that he’s still Gerald McCoy. You watch him on third down. You watch at certain times and you try to double team. When he gets off the snap, he gets off the snap still as quick as anyone in this league.
“He can very good at the run and the pass. I don’t think he’s having the production that he normally has. But he still is a gamechanger and one of the better D-lineman we’ll play this year.”
Joe’s eager to see how McCoy finishes this season. He’s played better the last two games and McCoy might be healthier at Thanksgiving than he has been in several seasons.
McCoy is under contract for three more seasons, but there’s no more guaranteed money in his deal and he’s due $13 million in 2019.

Has any nfl coach or player ever been like – that dude is trash!?
Nfl is about as PC as it gets. I bet you a fried turkey you can’t find a current coach or current playerto bad mouth Nathan Peterman. So what are you really saying Joseph?

Tom
Gmc would be the 3rd best DT on sf’s line. And at 13 mil it’s a laughable proposition. 13 mil and hasn’t played a full season in how many years? COME ON MAN.
November 22nd, 2018 at 1:31 pm
He’s gone, cap casualty casualty
November 22nd, 2018 at 1:55 pm
Yeah he must really impress Shanahan. 2016 against the 49er’s 2 tackles 1 assist 3 total. Same as our star player John Huges. 2013 against the 49er’s 2 tackles 1 assist 3 total. Same stats as another star Buccaneer tackle Akeem Spence. Man that dude really lit up this team. How will they ever possibly stop McCoy from making plays.l

He’s got to be worth at least a couple first rounders! No how about a 2nd and a third? No? How about a sixth rounder and a six pack? Nope! OK last offer a 7th rounder and a seven layer dip? Leave off the 7th rounder and you have a deal. Oh and you have to pay us cash.

GMC’s game is based on quickness, he wasn’t really a physical type of player that would push back oline men. It’s clear now that his skills are diminishing and he doesn’t look the same.
November 22nd, 2018 at 2:46 pm
I don’t see a difference. Gmc is the same player now he always have been.
Getting better players around exposed him. All the talk he was going to have HOF. Pfft.
November 22nd, 2018 at 2:50 pm
Ooohhh BUT WAIT….. this is going to be Batman’s year because he FINALLY will have some line help with JPP….. cough cough

McCoy is out of breath as soon as he runs out of the tunnel. Nothing better than watching his sack celebration against backups when they’re down by 35 points. Gerald is all about himself and his big fat paycheck. The Buc management is stupid and Gerald is laughing all the way to the bank.
November 22nd, 2018 at 2:54 pm
What I took from his first quote, “if he knows what’s going on”.
People who know more than me have been saying that McCoy guesses all the time.
He’s been crap forever and his weak attitude is infectious because he’s the highest paid player.
November 22nd, 2018 at 2:57 pm
The team always plays better when McCoy isn’t suited up. He makes everyone around him worse.
November 22nd, 2018 at 3:10 pm
I see the same player, quick off the ball, jumping out of his gap to create huge holes to run through, close to the ball carrier but not quite making the play. Always showing promise but doesnt actually do anything that matters. Same old McCoy in my eyes. Been watching the same garbage for his whole career.

GMC is a touchy subject and brings out the best in Bucs fan anger, the scapegoat.

November 22nd, 2018 at 7:52 pm
I give Gerald McCoy love for his last sack and sprint of the field. I think he hears us loud and clear.
Now I think the question is will he play to win or for self? Pro bowls are fun except for when your pb teammates are making fun of you.
Joe go to the archives find the quote, I’m drunk lol
My teammates in the pro bowl laughed at me they said I’m soft and that my team sucks. I got to put an end to that ! – Lmao. – Some preseason pc
November 22nd, 2018 at 9:01 pm
McCoy is still one of our best players on Defense. Thats not sayin a lot. But for us, he’s still makin plays. Funny how when your team is Losing, everybody becomes the can..kicked around.
November 22nd, 2018 at 9:45 pm
Got a sack last game. Who else did that? If you morons wait another year time will continue to catch up to him and eventually you’ll be right. But you will never, no matter how much BS you spew, be able to take away the fact that he was the best we have had in years, made many pro bowls, and was a good team mate who went hard in the game and practice. Never. You are so miserable you tear apart Bucs players at every turn. Loyalty and respect mean nothing to you, if it ever did. Sad. Go Bucs(all Bucs)!
November 22nd, 2018 at 9:47 pm
bucs fan… give me a break! Posers. Go Bucs!
November 22nd, 2018 at 9:50 pm
Who plays DT and gets bett after 10 years? Going as hard as he has gone? Get real posers.
November 22nd, 2018 at 10:30 pm
Big fat softie gonna apologize to some more quarterbacks

Joe,
Posting that article on this site is like throwing raw meat to the wolves.
