Letting Coaches Coach

November 20th, 2018

No quarterback edict from ownership.

A whole lot of people are trying to make a big deal about the contract status of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, and why he should sit the rest of the season.

The folks who rub their palms raw hoping for Jameis’ exit in a few weeks point to Jameis’ contract and wail that Team Glazer doesn’t want Jameis to get hurt so they won’t have to pay the going rate for a quarterback. That’s why Jameis must sit, to keep him healthy so they can toss him overboard in March without owing Jameis a dime.

Yes, Jameis is set to make $21 million next year, which isn’t even average for a starting quarterback’s salary (sorry haters). Jameis, based on 2019 projections, is expected to be the 18th-highest paid quarterback in the NFL, just a hair above Nick Foles, a backup.

Joe guesses these same people think paying Mike Glennon or Blaine Gabbert $18 million a year is a bargain Team Glazer lusts for.

These folks just will not listen to Joe say that one-year of Jameis with a $21 million salary is no big deal. Well, how about Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking, Ozark-watching coach Dirk Koetter? He said yesterday Jameis’ contract for 2019 has never come up in his meetings with One Buc Palace people.

“No one has talked to me about that,” Koetter said. “I don’t really know much about that. If I was ever talked to about that, then I would have an opinion on it, but I don’t. I don’t even really know much about it.”

And Koetter put this rumor to bed for good when he was asked if Team Glazer ever ordered him to play any quarterback. Koetter’s one-word answer was firm.

“No.”

So can we please quit bellyaching about Jameis’ contract? It’s not oppressive or even a factor for the powers that be at One Buc Palace.

As Aaron Rodgers would say, “REE-lax.”

But now the problem for the haters is, they will have to use their imagination to come up with another false premise to run Jameis out of town.

  1. Rod Munch Says:

Winston haters doesn’t exist to have reasonable and real conversations, they’re here to repeat what they read on bumper stickers and in the stalls of interstate rest stop bathrooms.

  2. Tampaspicer Says:

If the Glazers were dead set on letting Jameis go after this season he would be inactive. The fact that he isn’t and is playing tells you everything you need to know about Jameis being with the Bucs in 2019. He will and it will be for average quarterback pay. Plain and simple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Defense Rules Says:

What a joy it was to watch some REAL footbal last night (Rams-Chiefs game). Not just outstanding on-the-field playing but also some incredible coaching. Goff & Mahomes really impressed me … BOTH throwing for over 400 yds against outstanding defenses. Mistakes were made for sure, but they bounced back like true champions do. Just showed me Joe how far our Bucs team has to go to even be in the conversation for playoffs and Super Bowls. And yes Joe, that INCLUDES our QB position.

  4. Buddy Says:

This guy KLUELESKOETTER is a FRAUD. He is not a good head coach and overall look at the years qbs have had under him. Matt Ryan had his worst years while KLUELESS was coaching him. KOETTER stabbed Lovie in the back to TEAMGLAZER to get the job. Then he got power drunk off of one 9-7 season stated furring people around One Buc like long time video guys, brought in his buddy the “snitch” equipment manager who players hate, them gave his other friends like Hoke a job and how’s he done a secondary coach? Horrible.

  5. Joe Blahak Says:

How about the fact that he’s no good? That would be enough to run him out of town. No imagination needed…

  6. Rob Says:

I don’t hate Winston, otherwise known as the human ATM or America’s turnover machine. I just don’t worship him like the second coming like Joe. Referring to him falsely as the messiah (he is not the United States quarterback) is just childish and dumb. I don’t like Winston because I don’t trust him and you kind of need to trust your franchise quarterback which he is not. Let Winston finish up the season in garbage time, as usual for the Bucs around this time of year, and let the new regime judge if we should resign him to a contract befitting of Joe’s messiah. I guess you should just throw 25-30 million a year to a guy who constantly turns the ball over and eats W’s. I’d rather trade for Carr or draft someone else because I do not trust Winston. It’s that simple. Go Bucs

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Joe

There is difference between haters and we’ll do’ers for the bucs

… So don’t get the two twisted

I don’t want Jameis here cause he’s not the future….. That’s not hate but the truth.

In over three years he hasn’t proven he’s franchise QB…. Nuff said

  8. Bucsfan3 Says:

Jameis is the future…embrace it, Mike Glennon Mob, I mean Fitz-Tragic Fans.

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

And besides….. And the end of the day….. It’s the GLAZERS call if they wanna drop over 20 million on an unproven QB

How in the world are the bucs gonna find their franchise QB if they stick with loser?????

EVERY BUCS FAN will quickly forget about this turnover machine once they have found a good QB……

….. till then….. All you bucs fans will stay in your loser mentality of keeping with jaboo instead of moving on..

  10. Dre Says:

Joe Aaron Rodgers didn’t say REE- lax he said R-E-L-A-X relax

  11. Geno Says:

Good article Joe. Contract not a big deal for 1 more year.

A 2nd contract should be what buc’s fans should be arguing. Low of 3 years 60 million maybe 30 million guaranteed or high of 6 years 180 million with 70 million guaranteed.

  12. Bucsfanman Says:

“Imagination…for a false pretense”?! Don’t make me laugh! It seems appropriate here to inject what is easily one of the best quotes of our time, “Truth isn’t truth!” Rudy Giuliani

    Keep feeding ’em Joe!

  13. Bob in Valrico Says:

Totally agree with Defense Rules. The team that Licht built is not even close to
mediocrity. One can only hope that the Glazers watched the game also.
Fix the organizational structure and work down from there. This team reminds me of that old movie ,the Money Pit. Jason Licht keeps spending millions dollars
to correct deficiencies of the team , and the house is crumbling down as if it was built with Chinese drywall.

  14. Bucsfanman Says:

Defense Rules- I must agree. It was a welcome respite from what we are used to on Sundays. And for those still pounding their chest over the Bucs mirage of a #1 offense, compare the 2 teams from last night, either one, to our ‘ISH-show and tell me again about how “good” we are!
    NO COMPARISON!

  15. Christopher Says:

Joe did you ever think Koetter benched Winston bc he needed it? Comes off a three game suspension and lights up the league with 10 picks. Technically should be 14 bc he got lucky?

I’m not the biggest jameis Supporter bc I don’t think it’s coaching. He hasn’t improved since sophomore year at FSU where he did the same thing.

But you know maybe you should be saying Koetter benched him to get his mind right. Learn and watch the game from the sidelines because mentally he wasn’t right to be starting giving the football away like that?

Even in NY, he got away with 3 costly decisions. Which need to be eliminated. He was lucky it was the Giants dropping the ball on his mistakes.

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Hopefully, he can have a few solid games – and increase his value on the trade market.

  17. Dooshlarue Says:

Oh no Joe, Jameis will take care of proving the “haters” right.
Trust me……. he WILL eff up again.
He simply can’t help himself, he is a mental midget.

  18. Tbbucs3 Says:

So even Nadomukong Sun looked out of place in a pass happy league yesterday, if Suh is starting to look out of place, I can’t even image how Vita Vea will look. Nice going Licht, why are we taking fat slow defensive tackles when QBs can get the ball out in under 3 seconds? We need SPEED and power on the Dline.

  19. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Imagine walking out of the 1st Round w/both

    Quinnen Williams, DL, Alabama

    &

    Jeffery Simmons, DL, Mississippi State

    Smh, good lawd.

  20. AlteredEgo Says:

“Haters”…I don’t hate Jamyth….he simply is not a good NFL QB…he’ll revert to his historical norm over the next 6 games…just as Fitzpatrick has reverted to his historical norm….”Deniers” ….draft a QB with the 1st pick and let it sort itself out in 2019

  21. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Bucs put up 503 yards, only scored 3 points. Rams put up 46 less yards, and scored 54 points!!!!

Fire Licht and this whole coaching staff

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Tbbucs3

But Chris Jones (KC) looked like a monster though.

Would LUV for us to trade for that dude.

  23. Buc believer Says:

Can you honestly believe ANYTHING that comes out of Dorks pie hole? Especially how is the fishing today? (Which is all this lazy pos wants to do anyway) and he says back… horrible! (As he is reeling in his 10th fish the past half hour)

  24. BrianBucs Says:

I watched 2 very talented, exciting young QB’s last night that have both been in the league half the time that Winston has and are playing at a much higher level than he ever has and is not capable of. Just shows how the Bucs need to move on from Winston and let the new Bucs regime and brass that will be coming acquire their own QB, hopefully like one of those 2 guys or a couple of the other young QB’s in the league. Compared to most of these guys, Winston is substandard and would be their backups

  25. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Jamies will run himself out of town with his turnover play. Only difference between me n u is I’ve already given up on Jamies

  26. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Rams QB Goff was thought to be a bust until he got a better coach McVay, makes me wonder if the same would happen to Jamies if we got a better coaching staff and better GM

  27. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Lol, I can remember (2015 Draft) saying trade down and get a Kings Ransom.
And then listed Jared Goff as a potential trade target the following year.

    Woulda Coulda Shoulda

  28. Kobe Faker Says:

“We hire this man beside us because of consistency and stabilitility….

    Team Glazer

  29. Rick Says:

There should at least be a plan b in place if Winston is kept. You CANNOT go into next season with this same group of qbs. Fine keep him, see what he does in a new system.

  30. Iron Wombat Says:

I don’t think you can make the decision on Jameis until a new coaching staff comes in. It’s not just Wintson that’s not any better in year 4 than he was in years one or two, it’s every guy on the team. No player has been developed. Hell the defense doesn’t even understand their gap schemes and they’ve been in the same scheme for 3 years.

  31. AlteredEgo Says:

New coaching staff ???…Offense is among the top offenses in the NFL….you clowns are nuts !…the defense as been ignored in the draft building offensive weapons…we do need a new DC and lots of draft talent on that side of the ball…stop giving the ball to the other team with INT’s and fumbles…that ain’t coaching…

  32. Pete I Says:

If Jameis is the future, then continued losing is the future.

  33. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

You act like if Goff had come here he would be playing at the high level he is currently doing under McVay. Under Fisher he looked like hot garbage. Hmm maybe coaching has something to do with it and playing to a players strengths….

  34. AncientBuc Says:

Dirk started this train with poor leadership in training camp by stating, Jameis was not guaranteed his spot when returning from suspension. Jameis owns his suspension and Koetter needs to own the lack of trust. Jameis will be here and Dirk will not. Jameis needs to make better decisions obviously and he is younger then Carson Wentz. I wonder if Reid will sit Mahomes after 5 turnovers?

  35. Bob in Valrico Says:

Jason Licht should only be in charge of UDFA and acquiring
practice squad players from other teams, IMO.

I LUV reading your insight and opinion (as well as a few others). Given this scenario, who starts at QB (or are potential options) in 2019?

  37. Locked In Says:

huh, a defensive tackle who can take over a game? Wish we had one.

  38. Fire Light Says:

Rod Munch just won the Internet with the first comment.

  39. tbbucs3 Says:

    Agree Luv

Not saying to ignore the DT position but rather evolve into what the NFL is becoming. Run stuffers on the Dline are going to start to fade out but long lean and athletic D lineman like Chris Jones and Aaron Donald are becoming the new breed. Drafting Vita Vea was taking a huge step back.

  40. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @BucDan

    Combination of Options

    Re-Sign/Sign (either)
    • QB Ryan Griffin (Age: 29)
    • QB Tyrod Taylor (Age:29)

    Potential Trade Target(s)
    • Nate Sudfeld (Age:25)
    • Jacoby Brissett (Age: 24)

    Potential Draft Target
    • QB Ryan Finely (Age: 22)

Doesn’t matter, either way, it’s a rebuilding year.

I know Joe has a man crush but why???Has he been a good player??Please help run Winston out of town..bucs need a respected player and a respected man to be the face of the team..Winston blatantly lied to the team and to the fans. Publix said he was a thief ,uber is not a fan of his forgetful actions and he cost his school big bucs after the rape charge incident. He has thrown may to many interceptions with all the weapons for Winston.I’m hoping the bucs trade him after this season. (yes,i am a season tkt holder )

  43. tbbucs3 Says:

The only way for the Bucs to advance going forward is to clean house completely from the Lovie Smith era. #1 priority is to get rid of Lovies handpicked GM and then his OC who is now our head coach. Lovie Smith may be running a bad football team up in Champagne, Illinois but his hires and soft mentally weak culture are still running our football team.

  44. 813bucboi Says:

    LUV

if we grabbed q.williams and j.simmons, what do you do with VV?….play him as backup?……trade him?……i still think its too early to give up on him…..

  45. LakeLand Says:

    The “disgraceful” part of this

A top #1 overall draft pick
Is battling a 36 year old journeyman QB for the starting job

It’s insane that he’s competing against a guy who’s on his 7th team

I seen a LOT of young talent on both teams, during last night game
The Bucs are no where near these teams in talent

    They are Astronomical Years away

  46. bradinator Says:

I don’t hate Jameis. I have a closet full of Jameis T-shirts (which my wife will only wear inside out, lol). Nobody that loves this team wants the starting QB and former first overall pick to fail. Be honest what team considers a QB that has more INTs than TDs to be a franchise QB? Let him play out the year, and prove to us that he deserves the spot. You’re right, Joe, 20 million may not be much for a QB. 19th ranked in pay? Right now he’s certainly no better than 19th, and likely rated even worse. Play like your career depends on it, don’t throw dopey INTs and carry the ball with 2 hands. If he can do that he should stay. More turnoves than TDs? That would be a ticket out of town in any NFL franchise.

  47. Bucsfanman Says:

LakeLand- Yet, we are to believe that it’s some sort of conspiracy that Jameis isn’t a better QB! 4 years in the same exact offense.

LDE Damion Square | Quinnen Williams
NT Vita Vea | Beau Allen
DT Carl Nassib | Jeffery Simmons

RUSH Preston Smith | Aaron Lynch | Noah Spence
MLB Kendell Beckwith | Jack Cichy

NT Greg Kragen (95-97’ – Carolina)
NT Seth Payne (02-05’ – Houston)
NT Isaac Sopoaga (11-13’ – San Fran)
NT Eddie Goldman (15-Present – Chicago)

  51. LakeLand Says:

    Bucfanman,

I’m sure the Jacksonville Jaguars are feeling really low
For making the decisions that they made in 2017
Passing on Patrick Mahomes and DeShaun Watson in the 2017 draft
Extending Blake Bortles in early 2018

The injury prone RB they drafted instead of a franchise QB
Has missed 9 games already in 2 seasons
So the Jags sit with the Bucs at 3-7

    Wasting a great defense

  52. LakeLand Says:

But I give all of the credit in the world to Andy Reid and his Scouts

They had Alex Smith as their starting QB
A guy who had led them to the playoffs in 4 of 5 seasons
But they knew the guy was getting up in age
And they wasn’t pleased with his play

So they traded up in the 2017 draft
And drafted Patrick Mahomes, a young QB with enormous potential

Shout to Andy Reid and his scouting department

  53. Cobraboy Says:

Joe guesses these same people think paying Mike Glennon or Blaine Gabbert $18 million a year is a bargain Team Glazer lusts for.

Name me ONE Bucs fan who thinks ^^^that^^^. One.

  54. Eric Says:

Yeah Andy Reid is a great coach.

He didn’t play Mahomes his first year. Broke him in slow.

While everyone is going batcrazy over Mahomes I will point out that he has taken over a team coached by Andy who won 12 games last year. And had made the playoff three straight years.

On the other hand 21 year old JW took over a team coached by Lovie who went 2-14 the year before. And hadn’t made the playoffs since 2008.

Patrick may have come into the league in just a hair better circumstances to succeed.

But by all means lets run Jameis right out of town.

  55. 813bucboi Says:

    LUV

you got nassib at DT?….what about JPP?…..

i wouldnt mind a vic and bowles combo but i think Kris Richard is a defensive sean mcvay and our personnel is better suited for 43…..something he’s had success with in seattle and is currently having success in dallas…..

we draft ed oliver in the 1st and get a versatile Dlineman like rashad gary who can play DE on early downs then slid him inside next to ed oliver on 3rd down with JPP and nassib on the outside…..that’ll be a good pass rushing group…..

hell, i wouldnt mind trading down either….we need to draft a G and a T this year as well along with a DE and DT…..

  57. Tvan1011 Says:

False premise to run winston out of town? I dont need a false premise, more turnovers than touchdowns for 4 years is more than enough. No need to create a false narrative to run winston out of town he is doing that himself. Now Joe try not to insult over half the fanbase of your own website just because they disagree with you.

  58. D-Rome Says:

But now the problem for the haters is, they will have to use their imagination to come up with another false premise to run Jameis out of town.

Joe, very few people are actual “haters.” Most Bucs fans want to see the team win. Most Bucs fans want him to succeed. Most Bucs fans don’t care who is the starting QB so long as the team is successful. It seems some of your rhetoric is aimed at the few trolls that hit you up on Twitter on in these comments.

There are many people that genuinely believe he is not the QB of the future. There are many people that don’t want to end up like the Bengals, Dolphins, or Vikings and have a big money QB that is average while fans look at the rest of the league with envy. No one looks at Andy Dalton and says, “I’d love to have that guy on my team.” Same goes with Jameis. Teams will want him as competition at camp but that’s about it. Not even the Jaguars or Raiders would want him as their starting QB.

All of you clamoring for a new coach…how many times have we said that about other players, hoping the new coach will get the best out of a guy? It rarely happens. Most of you thought Mike Smith would “coach the Lovie out of the players.” It didn’t happen. Don’t delude yourselves into thinking a new coach is going to “coach the Dirk out of Jameis.” He is who he is and that’s turnover machine that flashes from time to time. Nothing has changed in four years.

  59. LakeLand Says:

    D-Rome,

    I agree 100%

    You nailed it

  60. America's Commenter Says:

Joe guesses these same people think paying Mike Glennon or Blaine Gabbert $18 million a year is a bargain Team Glazer lusts for.

Ummm, according to Spotrac, Gabbert earns $2M per season and Glennon earns $4M per season. Throw in Fitzpatrick’s $3.3M per season, and it’s pretty clear that crummy backup QB’s are worth about $3M per season.

How can anyone justify paying Winston, with a career 19-29 record, 7x the going rate for crummy backup QB’s?

The Bucs could lose 10+ games a year with any off-the-rack $3M crummy backup QB, and the Joes would be ecstatic about the Top 5 draft picks every spring.

we dont need the new HC to coach the dirk out of winston….we need the new HC to coach winning into winston……

i realize CFB and the NFL are 2 different animals but winston was a TO machine at FSU…..the difference was jimbo was smart enough to stay away from winstons weaknesses and show him how games are won which was pounding d.freeman and karlos williams while letting d.walker, t.jerringan, m.edwards, telvin smith, ramsey, darby, l.joyner stuff offenses…..

besides the RB’s from FSU, none of their other offensive weapons that played with winston are a factor in the league…..KB in buffalo nonexistent….rashand green?….nick oleary…..bobo wilson……kermit whitfield…..george campbell……

the key to winston’s success is and will always be a good run game, a good defense while only allowing him to throw 22-26 passes a game…..

The problem is that the NFL has changed too much. What works in college doesn’t work in the pros. It’s a passing league. Look at what happened last night. Two teams scoring 50 points and one of them lost! Think of the teams that have a run heavy offense who do not have an elite QB (Yes the Seahawks, Saints, and Rams are run heavy but they have elite QBs). What do their records look like? The Bears are run heavy but they have *two* excellent RBs and a top flight defense. Tennessee is struggling. The Ravens, Bills, 49ers, and Redskins all are in the top 10 for rushing but they are struggling. Dallas has a run heavy team but that cannot overcome Dak’s limitations. They also have a very good defense.

My point is that a new coach that brings in a run first style offense is not going to help matters. Run first offenses with below average QBs don’t win Super Bowls and Jameis is a below average, 3rd tier QB that turns the ball over more than anyone. Besides all of that, the Bucs have (arguably) the best receiving corps in the NFL. If he can’t succeed with that, then I don’t think adding a better RB is going to magically fix things. There is no fixing his turnover issue much in the same way that there was no fixing Mike Glennon’s inability to move outside of the pocket. Glennon was a statue and Jameis is a turnover machine.

People saying they watch two young qbs that showed Bucs need to move on from Winston are dumbasses and don’t know anything about the game. What you should of notice was what is around the QB. Both have a superstar at running back. Both are threats in the running and passing game. You have to respect their playaction. Some thing you dont have to do with Bucs. Also, even though both of their defenses played poorly they did create turnovers, something Bucs defense doesn’t do. Their wr/tes give a 100% on their routes unlike DesSean and the consistently dont drop the ball. Lastly, they have great coaching. So don’t compare Winston to them they’re in completely different situations.

You guys can argue all day and night about Winston.

But no matter what you say it won’t change a dam thing. As with everything in sports this will be decided between the white lines. Winston can(and likely will)change a lot of opinions, for better or worse.

So many of you sound upset which is just silly. Winston is entering this game with his back against the ropes. He has an enormous amount of pressure riding on his shoulders………Moments like these are what makes sports great(or heartbreaking). Why are you idiots so upset? This is an exciting moment…..granted no playoff aspirations …..but if you don’t feel any excitement from watching somebody under exteme pressure you don’t have a pulse.

  73. JimmyJack Says:

Jay will…..They said the same thing about Wentz last year. He he and his team are struggling and there are rumblings to put Foles in to start.

These are just basic kneejerk reactions.

d-rome says: The Bears are run heavy but they have *two* excellent RBs and a top flight defense

exactly!!!!!….so why dont we replicate that formula since that is the same formula that got winston a championship and heisman trophy……

the reason why those teams struggle while being a run heavy team is because their QB’s aint worth sh!t and they lack weapons…..dallas just got their defense together this year but they still lack weapons…..they are all missing balance……

imo, bringing in a HC that wants to have a run heavy offense will do more for this team than just produce yards on the ground…..it will create an identity…..the Seahawks, Saints, and Rams are run heavy teams but they all have an identity….they are all mental tough and physical teams…..

you cant name 1 team that is considered to be tough that has an rushing attack equal or below what we have…..

look at the teams you just listed above…..saints aint start winning until sean payton changed his style from air-it-out to ground and pound…..seahawks havent been the same without beastmode…..goff wouldnt be having this much success without gruley and his new HC mcvay who loves to run the ball……philly’s season didnt turn around until they traded for jay ajayi…..

my point is, imo, winston has been a product of poor coaching and a outdated scheme similar to Goff……winston is going to turn the ball over, but he has too much talent to just let walk out the door…..you minimize his mistakes by running the ball…..just like what jimbo did with d.freeman and karlos williams…..

with that said, are you saying we should keep dirk and toss winston overboard or get rid of both?…seems like you want winston outta here…..

Hey Luv, I noticed you didn’t list a QB on your wish list above. You get rid of JW who is your fking QB. God I swear our idiot fans want to rush back to the glory days of scrub QBs like Glennon.

    D-ROME

The Buccaneers’ top-ranked offense has surpassed 500 yards in five games. Tampa Bay is 1-4 in those contests, losing four in a row after falling to the Giants on Sunday (despite amassing 510 yards).

you cant just air-it-out….you gotta have a rushing attack…..thats something that’ll never change in the NFL…..

Someone mentioned changing to a 3-4 defense which may not be a bad idea. The next best coach is going to be one who can figure out how to stop this new high flying offenseses in the NFL. I think the days of low scoring games are gone. You will need to get more ball hawks and guys that can match speed for speed with the WRs. Pretty much all defensive players will have to have speed to have a chance at stopping the other team. A run game and strong offensive line will be important to slow the game down and keep the ball out of the other teams hands.
