Despite a four-game losing streak and playing poorly, Ryan Fitzpatrick is your starting quarterback on Sunday against the Giants.
“I just think he still gives us the best opportunity right now,” Koetter said this afternoon at One Buc Palace.
What a mess. Shame on Koetter and shame on Team Glazer.
Jameis Winston is healthy and ready to play for a 3-6 team. Joe would understand if the Bucs deactivated Jameis (not agree) because they don’t want to risk him getting seriously injured, which would force the team to pay him $21 million next year. But to keep Jameis active as the gameday backup and to force journeyman Fitzpatrick down the throats of Bucs fans is a waste.
Koetter and Team Glazer are playing scared. Playing Jameis is the correct play. The Bucs are making the wrong call.

I was on the fence about supporting Koetter for the rest of this year even though he will almost surely be fired when its all said and done.
But this decision is just STUPID!
Winston is the most talented QB on this team – and Winston gives this team the best chance to win on Sundays.
Yes he generally struggled coming back from suspension – and Yes the Bengals game was a debacle for Jameis and probably his worst game as a pro – but any other conclusion than “starting Jameis NOW is what’s best for this team” is just sheer stupidity.

Dirk is finished and wants nothing more to do with Winston
Dirk is keeping his job and glazers moving from Winston or both are gone so it doesn’t matter
It’s not about 20 mil because if it was Winston would be inactive. Apparently they are giving dirk more time to win games. Who confuses me is who they hell cares if you win against the giants? I posted this under an earlier article, and hoped it would be prophetic.
“Fitz did not play well enough to start again, and yet he didn’t play bad enough to be benched (four ints in a game seems to be Koetters threshold). That being said, Koetter needs to start Winston the rest of the season. By not signing Winston (or even negotiating) to a new contract, *AND* not even picking up his fifth year (like they’ve done with others), the organization is saying that they are not (yet) convinced that he will be a Buccaneer in the future. Koetter needs to give Winston every opportunity to show them that he is/isn’t without a doubt.”
Unless something changes between now and Sunday, it appears as though the organization has made a decision on Winston.

@AncientBuc: if Winston is deactivated, then every team knows his Buc tenure is over and there would be *zero* probability Winston has any trade value.
As long as there is some doubt of his future, he has some value and the Bucs might be able to get something in return. But it would be one of those “if we can do a long-term deal, then we’d trade for him” dealios…
Besides: maybe the Glazers know something we don’t.

Koetter has been given some type of ultimatum to keep his job and he’s simply going to do things his way if he’s going down. Glazers wont step in….they never do during the season. They’ll start lining up candidates behind the scenes…but they don’t mingle in the management of the team during the season.
Next coach/GM will decide what they want to do with Winston. They’ll also bear the consequences/results of doing so. Bucs wont give an ultimatum anyone must keep him….I don’t think they find him an asset at this time…..This season was a crap shoot from the beginning when Winston got himself suspended….He comes back and turns the ball over almost once per quarter, he’s not running the plays that are called….Koetter doesn’t trust him and I doubt the Glazers are in love with Winston…Particularly when they see Mariota playing effectively and without all the headache.

I think the Glazers know that the coaching staff is not getting the best out of the players, including Winston. I think they see that when free agents come to Tampa, they underperform and when they leave and get coached up they do a lot better. Our rookies don’t progress much unless they are naturally talented like Howard and Godwin. If they have to be coached up, like Vea they languish in mediocrity. It might even wearing off on JPP

Disagree. This is a coaching decision and it’s the wrong one. Koetter will pay for this with his job. I believe Winston remains a Buc in 2019. I think Glazers will be interested to see if Winston will develop under a new coach.

Don’t ever forget: Any relevance the Bucs have right now in the sports world is because of JAMEIS. The Bucs will always be talked about as long as Jameis is here. That’s huge for the owners of the franchise, and it would be an INCREDIBLE story if someone was able to turn him around and take TB to the playoffs.
Plus, I’m sure the owners are aware of how many FAs have gone on to be successful elsewhere, and the ultimate slap in the face would be if that happened for Jameis outside of Tampa.

I really hope they move on from Winston. We messed around with him too long. His issues cannot be fixed and they understand that. There’s no way the glazers pay him 20 million. He totally screwed up this season by messing around and getting clocked 3 games at the beginning of the year. That’s not anybody else’s fault but his. I’ve been beating this drum for a few weeks. Winston is getting the tough love treatment. They are treating him like a rook who isn’t ready. Once this team is done from any playoff chances they will insert Winston in to see if he’s learned anything like throwing the ball away. I’m not a Jameis guy at all, but I am surprised at this. This season is lost, we might win the Giants game and maybe the other Falcons game but that’s all I can see for the Bucs.
This has to be a decision from above Koetter. Why not play Jameis to increase his trade value or perhaps, although highly unlikely, redeem himself?
I also think Fitz gives us the best chance to win but he is not the answer for this teams future and we all know the Bucs aren’t making the playoffs.
Koetter is also going to be out of a job barring a historic comeback which is also highly unlikely.

The Glazer Boys need to step up and take the team over again from Jason Licht. They need to go to Koetter and tell him to 1. let Monken call the plays for the rest of the season and 2. Start Jameis the rest of the year so they can make an informed decision whether or not to keep Jameis or move on next year. The season is lost and starting Fitzpatrick makes no sense at all moving forward into next season. If Koetter refuses then tell him thank you for your services but you are relieved and make Monken the interim HC giving him a audition and interview for next season.

Not sure teams are waiting to negotiate a long term contract for Jameis before they even have him on their roster.
Somebody posted that the only reason other teams are talking about us is Jameis..that’s not talk it’s loud laughter. My son the Browns fan has laughed about Jameis from the beginning.
There is certainly a hard core of JW fans still here on the blog and around town…but nationally JW doesn’t make a ripple. Have you all never wondered why a guy with charisma and the award winning smile can’t get any commercials.
From what I’ve seen, and read, JW is not all that popular outside of Florida and Alabama.
That’s not a comment on his ability or future…just an honest observation about his current rep nationally.

He even said it on the record a couple of times that he wanted Mariota because he’s buddies with the Chicago OC that used to be at Oregon. You can blame them for elevating him to HC though because this is the antagonistic baby you’ve had in charge of developing your QB the last four years. Best thing for Winston is that he doesn’t have to run Dirk’s sorry offense, which has always had problems in scoring points despite moving up and down the field between the 20s going back to Jacksonville (look it up).

Jameis will be the Buccaneers starting QB next season. Ever since Winston returned from his three game suspension, he’s emphasized the fact that he’s had support from the top down, specifically ownership. While we’re witnessing the end of days for Dirk Koetter’s tenure in Tampa, JW will be here for the next decade plus whether you like it or not. Also, those reports about JW feeling like Koetter didn’t have his back while he was playing injured last year, definitely seem to be true when you look at how bad Koetter has handled this entire situation.

Winston has tons of talent but does not learn from his mistakes. It’s been 4 years and I know his numbers people say but between character issues, immaturity and no sign of progress it’s time to move on. Let our new GM. the first time i heard of him was during the seahawks SB run…..they were doing a special on the legion of boom on NFL Network and when asked who do they get their swag from they said Kris Richard…..
earl thomas said richard was the coach who mold him into a great safety and taught him certain tricks and techniques during his first year…..richard sherman said Kris helped him complete his transition from WR to CB…..brandon Browner said he helped with his technique and foot work with him being such a tall CB…..
then a few years later when byron maxwell went to philly, he was asked what was the biggest difference in philly vs seattle and why he was struggling….he gave a politically correct answer but he basically said he’s missing the coaching from his former DB coach who was still in seattle and that person was Kris Richard……
now fastward to this season, dallas needed someone who could develop their young DB’s and help out with the defensive scheme and play calling….they turned to Kris who was given a pay raise and more responsibility and he’s producing…..
he’s moved byron jones back to his natural position CB instead of safety and has the others in the secondary playing at a high level…..
IMO, he checks all the boxes…..
he’s played the game at the highest level, coached at a major university that won championships, coached in the nfl and we know exactly who he developed and he is now currently having success calling the defense in dallas…..
im afraid Dallas might make him HC or the Jets might scoop him up if the bucs dont get their sh!t together……
i understand why some fans are hesitant of hiring a guy who’s never been an HC but if you surround him with folks who’s had success he’ll be fine…..
look at mcvay…he has wade phillips to lean on who was a former HC….kyle shannahan has john lynch to lean on who won a SB and was part of a culture turn a round…..doug pederson has jim schwarts a form HC to lean on……

I’m so excited to be done with the Bucs. This organization is terrible, Vita Vea in the first round was remarkably stupid. Three years ago we take an undersized corner with questionable speed in the first round (they double down this year in the 2nd round by doing exactly the same thing MJ Stewart). Kicker in the 2nd round. Don’t get me started at the RB position. I’m looking forward to seeing Jameis with a real franchise. Jameis has gotten to play with an average Defense one time in his career and he went 9-7. Fitz or Winston are not Tampa’s problem. It’s everything else.

The only good thing is that Jameis wont have to be part of the upcoming beat down at the Giants. I cant remember when we went on the road and beat a New York team. It all started in 1976 when Joe Namath and the jets destroyed our bucs in the game we thought would be our best chance at victory. And, of course rookie Phil Sims beat us in his first pro game in 79 after we started 5-0. Were 1-7 playing the Giants on the road.

If Licht wants to possibly keep his job, he needs to step in, Fire Koetter, recommend a solution to the Glazers, then put every player on notice that they are auditioning for next season. Anyone who thinks Koetter is the answer is way, way wrong. Decent assistant, with a strong head coach that will make him run a balanced offense and makes sure there is a defense as well. Koetter has no care for anything except for an offense that generates explosive plays.

I disagree with this article as it’s ripe with bias. Winston never showed signs of life after returning from suspension. I have always supported him, but there was a noticeable drop off from Fitzpatrick’s production and liveliness for the offense. The momentum died from the poor decision to bring Winston back instantly. It showed the weakness of a head coach on the hot seat looking for the answer. However Fitzpatrick was on pace to be a league MVP at that point. Shortly after the first benching the rumors of trade requests arose because the team was fragmented. We never recovered in my opinion.
Also why would the team want to invest in a QB that’s one wrong decision away from being suspended indefinitely? Relying on him, a leader (for lack of a better word) that never reported the last incident to the team leaving them to be blindsided. For all they know, that wrong decision has already occurred and is just waiting on the next person to come forward. That’s not a franchise player. This was a consequence of Winston’s decision to party with a rapist on trial after just settling his own rape case in civil court. In the end, it wasn’t his poor choice in company, it was his own decision to sexually assault a stranger that did him in.

Neither QB is in the Bucs long term future. Jameis has been a disappointment on the field and a huge distraction off it. Fitz is at least a savvy, veteran backup who can mentor a new rookie QB after we draft one in April!
I would guess that Koetter has convinced the Glazers that Jameis will never be a quality NFL starter (which I agree with), and thinks he can buy himself another season by drafting a new QB (without all the off the field red flags).
The writing is on the wall. Jameis is GONE! All the apologists might as well get used to it. We might as well start talking about which QB we will draft.

I’m not worried about the money…just the distraction. Our fan base is clearly divided….just read this blog. His teammates seem to be growing weary of his act as well. He could be a great passer/QB…he could be the latest incarnation of Jeff George…great arm..messed up head.

I actually think playing Jameis is probably the better move. However he is still not franchise QB material. The Giants game is probably out most winnable one left on the schedule. If there was a time to let Jameis shine it would’ve been this Sunday.

Since the Bucs have only won three games this year, and Fitzpatrick led the offense during the first two wins over the Saints and Eagles, then you must be also counting the last game of 2017 to get to 2-2 for Jameis. Just need to remind you that the Bucs had lost nine straight games with JW3 as QB, only interrupted by Fitzpatrick going 2 – 1 for three games.
Some people were pretty convinced and quite happy that the Bucs tanked the last game of 2014, so that they could secure the #1 overall pick, and select JW3.
Do you think that maybe Koetter indirectly may not have minded too much, if the Bucs actually lost that last game vs. NO, since that may have helped to land Chubb in this year’s draft. Perhaps he was a little peeved that Jameis did not run the play as called???

Not till now am I convinced Joe you do have man crush on JW , if Job is to win he doesn’t give you best option to. Check history , check his play last 3 years and what makes you think he will be different. Poor play you say by FITZ well that makes JW play crap. I rather have a Qb that can see field and get rid of ball quick than sit back and hold ball for 8 sex and still throw pic.

jeagan… if Dirk had convinced the Glazers Winston isn’t the guy, he would be at least inactive but probably cut. That would be the only way there would be no chance to lose the $21mil.
More likely, the Glazers have serious apprehension around the coach. There has been a rift between Winston and Koetter since Minnesota. This is a broken relationship.

It’s real simple. The Meadowlands has strange wind patterns and Jameis can’t throw the ball accurately in normal conditions. Fitzgerald on the other hand has played in that Stadium many times and throws the ball much better in the Wind.

If Winston was not in the plans then he would be inactive and Griffin would be the backup. It’s really simple. Winston should get the last 6 games to see if he’s learned anything by sitting and watching. Koetter knows he’s done unless Winston takes off then Koetter may have saved his job by developing Winston into a mature NFL QB.

Absolutely correct. Add, an owner with deep pockets who needs to win ASAP. The location, Los Angeles is a big deal and is high profile unlike say…..Tampa.
A team that had been underperforming with (as you stated, cornerstone) high draft pick players that were young. High round draft picks. Cap room.
All those selling items that could be seen as attractive to a Head Coach candidate and they didn’t land a Harbaugh, Arains, McCarthy. Yes, they weren’t available, that is not the point. The team didn’t land a big name proven NFL Head Coach nor a big deal College Coach. They had to pick an inexperienced HC w little more coordinator experience. Basically they took a gamble and it is working.
The candidates will not be the harbaughs or Arians, they won’t be Riley or Shaw.
Throwing money at the problem won’t matter (top NFL HC coach type money) no tax state and weather,,is not something that just happened and so far…it’s not drawn anyone. Dungy was the proverbial last man standing when the time came and Gruden was traded for otherwise He won’t have been here.
Dream big, and settle for crumbs. That’s the Buc Life.

I think the Bucs are going to trade Winston in the offseason. There are going to be some qb needy teams that will go after his potential. If he had great coaching and was with an organization that rewarded performance instead of mediocre players he may have a chance of being resurrected.
No one knows exactly what the future is for some of the mid-to-lower level quarterbacks whose contracts are high and may be cut by their teams.
Winston could be salvaged with the right coaching but since Tampa is rebuilding again it doesn’t make sense for him to be part of a rebuild.

Fitz has had plenty of help in his losses this year. The D in the Bear game, His Center, top WR, and K in the last game. What you got on 3? He is not the answer, is the biggest turnover machine of any potential starting QB in the league right….all he will do is take up $120 million plus in salary and guarantee we will be mediocre at best.
