Charlie Weis And The Bucs

December 3rd, 2009

Joe’s good friend, the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, “The Big Dog,” Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620, has not kept his feelings secret that ousted Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis would be a great addition to the Bucs staff.

Well, one can now add Anwar Richardson of the Tampa Tribune to the list of local media members who believe Weis would be a good hire.

Weis, who is responsible for developing Tom Brady as the Patriots former offensive coordinator and seemed to have a knack working with quarterbacks at Notre Dame, might work wonders with Freeman, Richardson suggested.

Q: With the recent firing of Charlie Weis is there any slight chance the bucs would bring him in as the offensive coordinator in 2010?
Lee Jones, Jacksonville, NC

A: I’m sure it’s an option Tampa Bay will look into. Lets be honest, the Bucs didn’t even interview Greg Olson when they were working for an offensive coordinator earlier this year. Charlie Weis worked with Tom Brady and it would be interesting to see what he could do with Josh Freeman. Considering Tampa Bay’s offense is not a juggernaut this year, it’s a move the team should consider.
— Anwar Richardson

Richardson makes an interesting point. Why do — or will — the Bucs covet Greg Olson so much if he wasn’t even interviewed for the job in the first place.

The Bucs didn’t interview Olsen for the OC job for political reasons (his offense is too much like Gruden’s). However, he’s done a heck of a job with Freeman and for that reason only, I think Olsen keeps the job next year. Why risk hindering Freeman’s development by changing OC’s?

  2. Mr. Gruden Says:

The reason Olsen, as well as Raheem, got their jobs was simple – lazy hiring practices on the part of the Glazers.

Let’s face it we all heard that Raheem was going to be interviewed by the Bronco’s and that KC was interested in interviewing Olsen after they canned their OC.

That caused the ears at the Glazer’s underground hideout to perk up.

“Hey Joel did we miss something? Why would the Bronco’s want to interview our new DC?”

“I don’t know Byran but if someone else is interested in one of our coaches they must be important right?”

“Hey you’re right Joel. Maybe we should just offer them the jobs on OUR team – that way we don’t have to interview anyone ourselves.”

“Well suppose these other teams just want an interview with Raheem in order to comply with the Roonie Rule? I mean all he’s ever done is DB coach right?”

“Don’t try and be smart with me – no team would really do something like that. Nah I don’t want to interview anyone this week anyway. let’s just give them the job.”

And as Paul Harvey would say, “and NOW you know the rest of the story.”

Hey you wanna make sure Charlie Weis takes the Tampa OC job?

Promise him all you can eat wings at Beef O Brady’s! That’s an offer Charlies won’t be able to turn down.

Of course with Charlie it would be CHEAPER to just offer a 3 million dollar contract…

Beef O’ Brady’s wings? That would scare any candidate away.

Malloy enjoys Joe’s site and finds himself reading it more and more…

    LETS DO THIS!!!
    WEIS for OC!

  6. Joe Says:

    mpmalloy:

Thanks for the compliment. Joe appreciates it.

  7. RastaMon Says:

Charlie Weis would be at the very least……a HUGE addition to the coaching staff
    😉

  8. Larry Says:

Cripes this is kind of premature – Larry thinks we need to give Olson a chance!

  9. Mr. Lucky Says:

Larry, where have you been this season? The ONLY game in which the offense even looked efficient was the first game of the season against Dallas – the Bucs were using Jeff Jagodazinski’s system at that time

Since then the Bucs have “reverted” to the Jon Gruden playbook, giving up on the zone blocking west coast hybrid that Raheem promised us bay in April-May.

Thru 11 games this year the Bucs rank 28 out of 32 in total offense scoring a measly 16.5 ppg

Going into the season everyone, including myself and Joebucsfan.com thought the running game would be the bucs strength. Thru 11 games the Bucs rank 23 in the run.

Last year (2008) the Bucs ranked 15/32 in rushing. So what IMPROVEMENT do you see in Olsen?

I give people a “chance” when I see improvement not total degeneration and dismantling of a team.

  10. Mr. Lucky Says:

Joe what about paying Charlie in unlimited Caybrew?

  11. Mr. Lucky Says:

Actually Charlie Weis and Jon Gruden should start a “former coaches” club while doing a play-by-play for ESPN and collecting their coaching salaries as well.

Are the Glazers on the Board of Directors at Notre Dame?

  12. tnew Says:

Bring him on now as a Offensive Consultant and then hire him as the OC at the end of the year. When Lovie gets the axe at Chicago (having a hard time wrapping my brain around that one) hire him as the DC and Assistant Head Coach. That is unless somebody snaps Lovie up before we do.

    Just my pipe dream.

  13. BigMacAttack Says:

I agree with tnew that we should sign him now. Let’s see what he brings to the table. Try it, drive it before you buy it. He can only help the Offense. Olie just isn’t the guy, although he does have a few good plays, but not enough. I think Raheem should be the DC and we need a new experienced Head Coach. Someone like say….Jon Gruden.

  14. Jesse Says:

Something tells me this “Mr.Gruden” character is very unstable.

  15. Mr. Lucky Says:

    You guys are soooo funny.

“Sign Charlie right now!”…”Put Weiss on the payroll before someone else gets him.”

Give me a break. Bellicheck has publically stated that he’d welcome Weiss back at NE.

Now please tell me why anyone would take a job in Tampa as OC versus the same position with the Patriots under a REAL HC – Bellicheck?

  16. Mr. Lucky Says:

Hey Joe I bet Raheem was on the phone yesterday calling coach Mangino asking HIM if he wanted to be the Bucs new players name calling coach. Rumor has it Talib wasn’t happy about that move! 😉

  17. tnew Says:

    Mr. Lucky,
You’re right. We shouldn’t even try, we should just change the name to Succaneers right now.
